Used phone info to use only 3g but will not get full signal where other 3g phones do - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I have Verizon Samsung Galaxy s3 and used phone info app to turn on only 3g selected (CDMA auto PRL) but I'm not getting full signal when I'm close to a tower I get maybe 3 bars. Am I selecting the right option in the app or should I select something different?

From what I have read, that would be correct but on another note.... I haven't seen 4G all day today and my 3g is only 1-2 bars since starting my morning...

you have to reprovision your device with this dialer code: *2767*3855#
this wipes data so have a backup ready...

Airplane Mode to Reset LTE after phone call on AT&T?

AT&T customer service told me today that the HSPA+ network is capable of simultaneous voice and data, but that the LTE network is not (yet). She said that if you receive a call while using data, the phone will drop back to HSPA+. She also said that it may take awhile before the Skyrocket goes back into LTE mode. So she told me to put my phone is Airplane Mode for 15 seconds and that this would reconnect me to LTE if it's available.
Can anyone confirm this? I don't have my Skyrocket yet.
i have not seen my phone ever not have the lte signal up top. unless i get NO signal when im at my job. which normal for me.
and thats after calls as well.
i can confirm that LTE is NOT capable of doing voice AND data at the same time. So yes your phone will switch back to "4g" (or slower) during all phone calls. I don't know how long it'll take to switch back.
My phone used to'do this..after the 2.3.6 update it stop

This is correct. We were testing it over the weekend.
We even tried using Google voice to make the call and override the switch but the phone apk itself appears to initiate the switch from lte to hspa. This is not new info...it has been speculated that this would be the case.
I see some report the update changed this so I will test that tomorrow.
In testing the phone immediately switched back to lte after the call. The consensus seems to be that if your phone does not switch back you need either the new sim, reprovisioning on Matt's end or both. This seems to fix data connectivity issues and network type swapping issues that many are having

not that it helps much, but this is an issue seeming to affect alot of us. I havent been able to correct it yet however. If I find anything out I'll post it.
Just put on airplane mode and turn it back off. Boom your done.

Is that an app you use to change those settings or is that buried somewhere?

I just checked as I haven't seen it yet either. Settings, More settings, mobile network, access point names
Kind of cool. Mine showed the first option chosen but it hope between 3G and 4G as usual. Choosing LTE made no difference for me. I have virtually no 4g signal where I love

Airplane mode is a feature of the phone and turns off all radios. You can hold the power button and choose airplane mode or use the quick toggle in the notification window. Since it sounds like you may be in an area with weak 4G, you can also use an app called Phone Info to set it to CDMA auto (PRL) under Device Information. You can also change it back to LTE/CDMA/EvDO if you want it to switch as normal.
With the Verizon S3, is there the need to do *228 (or *22899) ? I did this every so often on my old HTC Incredible.

Doesn't work on LTE devices. A reboot essentially does the same thing. Some have recommended pulling the battery with the phone on, removing the sim card for about 30sec and then putting everything back in.
Thanks, I know what airplane mode is, wasn't sure where the APN setting was. I will look in to phone info though.

Are you guys also experiencing the "No Sim Card" and "No Network Connection" issues?
Or is this an entirely different issue?
When this phone goes to 3g, it does seem extra bad on how long it takes to switch back to 4g. i have areas where i live where it goes to 3g when going in between hill (less than a 50 foot stretch) and it will not go back to 4g for over 10 minutes if i dont manually do it. Not to mention my LTE never goes above 10 mbps on the best days
Somewhat related...If you use Anycut to create a shortcut to IOTHiddenMenu, enter the ##DATA# Menu, edit. Under "Advanced", there is an LTE toggle, under "Other" > "HDR/1X" you can set the phone mode, and then under "Other" > "LTE APN Settings" you can somewhat modify the APN settings, reset and discard. If it asks for a password, it's 000000.
I gave these a try. I'm trying to find a way for my phone to favor 4G when there's a 4G signal, no matter how weak.
Yesterday I did a test, 3G with 3 bars vs 4G with 0 to 1 and 4G had consistently faster download speeds and shorter ping times. The upload varied from similar to 3G to slower.

probably easier said than done. The phone info app can force LTE but you lose voice and text.
Ya I found that out yesterday when testing speeds. I went to send a text then make a call and no luck
Otherwise 4G service where I live could be excellent at one spot then a mile away no service. If I had excellent 4G consistently I'd consider GoSMS which I believe has the option for data text and also a separate VoIP app
Ah well hopefully something will be figured out eventually. With a strong 4G signal 4G is considerably faster and more consistent than my 20mbps home broadband

I've had similar issues with my network. I had no 4G in 4G areas, but mainly my wifi would disconnect randomly and 3G also dropped to 1X a lot. I ended up having to send it back and get another one. So far no issues. Also the new ones have an "Updated" sticker on them. I think it was just a software update they applied, but I never got the OTA on my old phone.

Your new phone came with an already updated firmware version I535VRALG1 instead of the original version I535VRALF2.

I'm having the same issue with my second replacement phone... My first one was replaced for an entirely different issue (loose home button).
Did you get the "No Sim Card" notification and "No Network Connection" message?
I think I might have to return this one as well...

Not sure if anyone will have the same luck I have with the "Phone Info" app, but with it I was able to get my 4g service back and my phone is functioning normally again. Just open the app, select Device Information and scroll down to "Set preferred network type" and select "LTE/CDMA/EvDo" then get out of the app.. 4g should return shortly there after. When I looked at it, my device was set to "GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)"

No 4G LTE

I'm running the latest stock JB Leak (K1), I've flashed the K1 and HE radios in CWM but all I ever get is a 3g signal in areas I'd usually get 4 bars of LTE.
I've already tried:
Flashing K1 and HE Radios in CWM
Restarting
Changing Network mode to CDMA/LTE from Global
Picking LTE - Verizon Internet in Access Point Names
After flashing a radio hitting Clear Cache and Dalvik Cache
Restarting without SIM in and then Restarting with the SIM
Thanks in advance.
What did you use to go from cdma to lte?
Sent from the Matrix
You've already tried what I would suggest:
Go to Settings, Wireless/More Settings, Mobile Networks, Network Mode, LTE/CDMA. Then Access Point Names, LTE.
The only time (with HE or K1) I can't pick up 4G well is in my house. I go outside and it picks it up, but inside will drop to 3G.
If it's an issue for you, then you may want to revert back to whatever Ice Cream Sandwich ROM you were using before, such as HE, G7, or F2.
If you did a backup in Clock Work Recovery, then you can just restore it.

Hmm you might just have to wipe the phone and flash clean

I had to exchange my phone with Verizon
I just nandroided back to ICS, it's acting very funny.
I can get a LTE signal now but ONLY by going to an app (Phone Info) and switching from LTE/CDA/EvDo to LTE only. Also after switching to LTE it still only shows a signal of -120dBM (while still showing an LTE icon), after I switch the screen off and then back on it shows bars and the dBM starts to register normally.
I can still not get LTE to work regularly with CDMA/EvDo and haven't seen it switch to LTE once without me changing it.
I've tried the K1, JB and HE stock radios.
Would clearing all data before doing the nandroid do anything?
bumping
Fixed the problem, I got everything cleaned up and back to stock (using the guide that's pinned in the Q/A forum and went into Verizon, they gave me a new SIM Card and I can now get 4g LTE again, still on stock, will be nandroiding when I get out of class.
If there are any probems after the nandroid I'll post them here, if not everything went according after the nandroid.
So if anyone in the future is having this problem it could be the SIM card.

I was just going to recommend trying the Re-provision code (only works on early ICS builds), and if that didn't work getting a new SIM card.
Glad to hear the SIM card fixed your issues!
I had the same issue. But a new sim didnt fix the issue. Replacement on the way.

[Q] Stuck on 3G network!

My Verizon Galaxy SIII is stuck on 3G, and will not access 4G. I am using Cyanogenmod 10.2.1 (stable).
The problem started when I was travelling, and used *228 to try and improve reception. I just meant to use option 2 to update the list of towers (Preferred Roaming list), but derped and pressed 1 instead. Option 2 just updates the list of towers, while option 1 also updates the location of my Home switch. No issues making receiving calls/texts etc, but stuck on 3G data speeds.
Once I returned home from my trip, I used *228 option 1 again to fix this, but it did not.

I had the same issue for the longest time... and did everything you tried... I ended up giving up and going into the Verizon store and asking for a new Sim Card (Which is free of charge). After that BOOM 4G again! everywhere!!! I recommend going in and getting a new SIM card!

Ya No Problem....funny thing was the employee there couldn't tell I had a custom rom on my phone... regardless of him being unable to find anything on my phone lol, If worse came to worse I was just going to play dumb and say my friend "did something" to my phone to make it look different.

[Q] no LTE

I have a verizon gs3 that is rooted, running beanstalk 4.4.251-20140301-d2lte. I can't get LTE to work correctly. I can get LTE to turn on if I change my 'preferred network type' to LTE/GSM/WCDMA, but then I have no verizon signal (voice signal). When I have it on 'global', I can get 3G and verizon signal, but never any LTE.
This has been going on for quite some time. I've switched between all of the 'preferred network types' but its always 4G and no cell signal, or 3G with cell signal. I used to be on CM 11 nightlies, thought that might be the issue. I switched to Beanstalk, but have the same issue. Just yesterday, I updated my firmware from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788313
Is there something obvious that I'm missing?

I have the EXACT same issue, so you're not alone! Unfortunately, I have no answer for this either.
I was running CM11 (just the stable releases), started noticing lack of LTE a few weeks ago, decided to give SlimKat a try. The ROM is damn near flawless besides this LTE issue. I could actually never get it go into LTE mode through the normal settings, it would always fall back to 3G (and I'm in the middle of a capital city where there's plenty of 4G coverage). However, if I did that *#*#4636#*#* trick to go into testing mode, I could force it into "LTE Only", at which point the phone would be in LTE mode, and enjoy the blazing fast data speeds I pay for .... but can no longer make phone calls.
Anyone else out there experienced this or something similar? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
After doing some research on it, I decided to flash back to stock and unroot. After that, I still could not get 4G, so I took it into the verizon store. I told him the problem, and that I had heard that it needed a new sim card. After doing some simple test, he burned a sim card for me and that did it! I'm thinking that soon after I flashed a CM11 nightly (a month ago at least) I dialed *228 to update my cell coverage. I think that might have fried it. I have limited knowledge on this topic, but I did read somewhere that dialing *228 on some custom roms is not good.
It would be nice if you could take it in to the store without flashing back to stock, but I'm not sure if they would go for that or not.
