Help Rooting [Desperate] - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I'm a total noob (please don't hate). I've tried rooting my Nexus S running 4.1 for a long time now, but I just can't
seem to figure it out. I was wondering if someone could walk me though it step by step via some sort of
communication like MSN Messenger. I don't know whether I'm messing up the drivers or what it is, but my
I can't ever unlock my bootloader.
Thanks ahead of time.

Nexus S 4 life but you joined this month hmm lol
Which part are you stuck at?

I tried before I joined. I can't seem to make it say ULOCKED in the bootloader, but I think I'm screwing up the whole thing. Could you please guide me through it? You don't know how happy I'd be.

Do you mean you can't get the Yes/No dialog to show up? Looks like driver problems. Make sure you installed all of the Nexus S drivers needed. While you're in bootloader you should see Android 1.0 under Device Manager on your computer. Installing pdanet usually fixes this..Good luck

i tried pdanet but it comes up with this error message that keeps getting stuck between 2 windows

Not sure what you mean by that...but it looks like you lack fastboot drivers. Refer to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878786 and let me know how it turns out.

Dont understand what any of this means
How to install ADB and Fastboot:
1. download and place in the root of your C:\ drive
2. extract here (not into a sub folder)
3. now open up control panel
4. find system
5. goto advanced settings
6. goto environmental variables
7. in the box that says "system variables" scroll down to find a variable "Path"
8. highlight it
9. click edit
10. add this to the end
Quote:
;C:\android\tools
yes the ; is needed
11. click ok

Hey NexusS4Life, if you still haven't rooted, I'd be glad to help you. I'm no expert, but I'm pretty familiar with the whole process now, seeings as how I've rooted a Nexus One and Nexus S.
Private message me, as soon as I see it we could set up a time to chat on MSN or whatever so this goes quicker.

Well, I was helping him in PM but he hasn't said anything else so A. He's rooted and having the post-root jitters, B. Pissed and sleep

If you guys run into any problems or errors please let me know so I can see whats wrong.

Sorry if I talked quietly I'm sick.

Fixed. If you are getting a adb command not found error. Redownload the big file or download the runmefix.zip (Check your tube video) uncompress the file and put runme in the thunderbolt directory of your desktop.
If you download the big file after April 9th 2011 at 7:30am then you do not need this fix
Saw the video. Got the files. Will be doing this as soon as my phone is charged in the AM. Hopefully it works.

Yes. Worked awesome. Takes a while, but it worked. Just make sure to follow directions to the T, I accidentally hit enter on a command too soon and had to start over. But all works as far as I can see. Super easy, but takes a while.
Thanks again to OP!
This looks great--no messing around in ADB?
Its uses adb but you don't have to worry about it or anything like that.. The download includes what it needs.

Yeah it worked great for me, the first time around the phone booted earlier than it should have and I had to do the whole thing over, and the second time I tried to remover the Verizon Backup via titanium backup (**DO NOT TRY THIS**) and almost bricked my phone, and so the third time everything worked perfect and now Im running Perfect Storm by Chingy and its awesome thanks!
My phone isn't recognized. Usb debugging is checked but the terminal window just says checking for phone over and over. Any ideas ?

[Q] installed USB driver, not working (SOLVED)

Dear Gents,
I've installed the USB driver from the Motorola's official site, the newest ver.is 2.2.28. But after installed it, my laptop (windows 7 Prof. SP1) still not recognized the photon q.
anyone experienced this? fyi, I also use the original USB cable that came with the Q.
any help appreciate it, thanks before..

OK, you're using this guide?
You're then trying to install the drivers from step #3? Where does it fail? What happens?
Please be as descriptive as possible. We're not mind readers, so the more information the better. Thanks.

Affirmative bro..i am using this "manual", after step 3, proceed to step 4. when I plug the photon q with usb cable, the warning sign pop up on above the tray right below, it said, "the driver doesn't install"
already tried by restart the laptop than re-install the driver again, but still showed the same thing. on window explorer, there is no USB mount also.
by looking via device manager, no adb driver installed also..
Just in case you hadn't thought of it (though I'd assume you have), have you tried changing which usb port you're using on your laptop? I just ask because there's 1-2 I never have as much luck with on my PC for whatever reason.
I've tried that also.. no luck, also use my incre2 cable data also no luck.. any advise, friends?

[Q] Rooting Photon Q LOST and CONFUSED

Hi, I am new to this and decided I need to root my Photon so I can use it as a WIFI hotspot for my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Tablet. I have read so much I am totally lost and confused. I have tried pdanet foxfi(which did work with my laptop but that is now unusable) and such but I can only browse web on my tablet and nothing else. Every app says check internet conection or wifi connection. I need to be able to use apps that require wifi such as team viewer. Please help. I don't know the first thing about this.
I have sprint (regrettably stuck for 2 years now) but love my photon. If someone can post a link with like 1 2 3 type steps it would be fantastic. I know zilch and the more I read the less I know like minus zilch lol. I find using my tablet is so much easier too read that I would rather use it if I can for internet stuff versus my phone.
Thank you.
Is your device rooted and the bootloader unlocked?
Have you considered CyanogenMod or another custom ROM? Tethering works out of the box on most of those.
When I was on the stock ROM (before CM was on the device...) I used a wifi tether app from the Play Store, but you did have to be rooted to use it.

Haven't considered anything yet, am just learning bout this. Phone is standard, no unlocking or anything. I am just leaning terms also. I don't know how to unlock or root. So neither are done. Have no idea about ROMs yet. As I said, am just starting so forgive me for being ignorant of these things at this time.

No worries.
I think there's still a way to root without unlocking - but here's the jist.
Unlocking allows you to do anything - custom recovery, custom ROM, whatever you please. Rooting only allows apps on your device root access - so you still have stock recovery, stock ROM.

lol, yes. Unlocking is pretty simple, just make sure you are getting the code correct - has to match exactly!
The only downside is the official warranty is voided - but if you have insurance with your provider, they should still honor it. Just the manufacturer warranty is voided.

I get off work in a few hours and after some sleep will go try that link up above. Desktop running xp. Have never connected photon to PC yet. Hopefully will go smoothly.
You should be fine running XP. The instructions from Windows 7 should be the same and if not they should be similar enough that you know what to do. I put the disclaimer in there because I don't like saying "this is how you do this" without having tested it first hand.
I installed the drivers and SDK now onto the rest hopefully tomorrow as I didn't want to start with only a few minutes left before I had to come to work.

Different cable? Different port? Different PC?
Are you sure the drivers are installed? Does the PC make a sound when you plug it in, indicating that it recognized *something* being plugged in?
How does it show up in device manager?
Please give us as much detail as you possibly can. What you've tried, etc.
Also, if you have debugging on turn it off, or if it's off, turn it on.

Please, please, please, help. Spent 7 hours on this and still don't know what to do.

So here's the thing, I'll try to be as short as possible. I was watching this video of this guy (how to root the nexus 5 (safest method)) showing how to root the nexus 5. But everything went wrong and I accidentally wiped the entire phone, now I have no OS.
I have installed a bunch of drivers and stuff here, but don't know how to use them. Please, if someone can give me a stupid proof solution to this, I would be very thankful.
tl;dr: I have no OS and would like to restore my Nexus 5.
Please, guys, I'm desperate. I have a test in 5 hours and already should be sleeping, but I simply can't. I've screwed everything up. Please, help.

Both links in my signature and the post above this one.
This is hardly an issue, solved in a couple minutes. Next time do some research before doing anything to a device that you paid for.
Don't want to do your research? Then sell the Nexus 5, get a locked down Samsung device/iPhone and don't mess with it.
If that is true and you dont have a clue what ever gave you the idea to try and root your phone jesus if you aint got a clue do some homework and learn, there are walkthroughs on this site or just google it........

1. Relax. Its a nexus. This can easily be fixed.
2. We all start somewhere. When we all were noobs to this we all wiped our devices and freaked. Again don't panic. And ignore the guys cursing your noobness. But one thing is for sure - after you fix this, read before you leap.
3. As someone else recommended - there is a tool called wugfresh nexus root all in one...or something like that. Just follow the link in his post. This us a great tool and will save you some pain. Its well laid out and will fix your issues. Just follow the steps. Keep this program handy and on your computer. If you intend on flashing Roms eventually you will make a mistake and wipe your phone again and this will save your bacon.

The answer has already been given.
Choices are:
1) Learn to use fastboot. Return your device to stock.
2) Lear to use adb. push a rom.zip to your sdcard to flash via recovery
Click the link in my signature. ALL important guides are there.
Read the following:
"adb and fastboot. What is it?"

I'll just add, with TWRP if you have an OTG adapter you can plug a thumb drive into the phone and flash a ROM that way. Every now and again I like to start fresh and will copy a ROM onto a thumb drive, I'll wipe the entire phone then re-flash. You'll just have to Mount USB-OTG from the menu.
tbh I dont even know why people use toolkits.

Not everyone is comfortable using command prompt to fire lines as they think they will mess up (especially people who are new). The toolkits do these things in the background when the user clicks on a button and hence he/she thinks it's the easy/safe way around it without knowing the consequences of it.

Let me start with, Thank you so much for your time
However, It seems like I'm unable to install the right drivers on my PC for my phone and adb doesn't detect my device (which is strange as CF-auto-root did see the device and worked fine)
I walked through multiple tutorials about installing drivers. Actually have windows detecting my phone fine (I see it in device manager) and I've reinstalled google USB drivers multiple times now, rebooting my PC and deleting drivers and reinstalling them
I've justed factory reset my phone, but that just got me to a Google logo stuck (which I read about in your link in your signature)..
Because adb doesn't detect my device I'm unable to pull build.prop... which means I feel stuck again.
Would you have a direction for me to go towards to continue my journey through Nexus5-Land?

If you're using Windows 8, 8.1 or 8.1U1 you'll need to disable driver signature enforcement.
Try flashing the factory images in fastboot?
Could somebody not just make a flashable zip with the correct build.prop?
Failing that, just reflash the ROM.

If you're using Windows 8, 8.1 or 8.1U1 you'll need to disable driver signature enforcement.
Try flashing the factory images in fastboot?

It seems like it worked! Completly back to StockROM but the phone works again. Thank you so much for your time.
And you're right, I should learn to read and understand what I'm doing before I do anything with my phone. Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for the help you've given.

Glad you got it sorted but, unless you couldn't boot into recovery, you didn't need to go back to stock.
Flashing the correct build.prop or ROM you were using should have sorted it out, without losing any data (you would have lost any system mods if you flashed the ROM again, though).
I'm only mentioning this in case somebody else searches and finds this thread for the same problem.
I've changed the build.prop loads of times on many devices and only once it went into a bootloop. Flashing a build.prop zip sorted it.
