Added line to build.prop....now bricked? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I wanted to wake up my nexus 5 with the volume buttons. Looking online I found that you could add code to your build.prop.. which I did.. then rebooted...
Now my phone does 'nothing'... When I press the power button it vibrates 2 times and nothing happens...
Help!.. Have no idea what i can do to get things running again
P.S. I've got Slimkat ROM running

Don't exaclty know what you mean with that..
I've downloaded Kwongger's Nexus 5 All-In-One Toolkit , I hope that's what you meant. And then it says it's missing the hammerhead.image.zip... which I assume is the stockROM?.. If so, shouldn't I Reflash to Slimkat?
Sorry for being such a Noob. I've had Samsung for years and just switched to Nexus (bought it last week). Still need to learn my way around things

Let me start with, Thank you so much for your time
However, It seems like I'm unable to install the right drivers on my PC for my phone and adb doesn't detect my device (which is strange as CF-auto-root did see the device and worked fine)
I walked through multiple tutorials about installing drivers. Actually have windows detecting my phone fine (I see it in device manager) and I've reinstalled google USB drivers multiple times now, rebooting my PC and deleting drivers and reinstalling them
I've justed factory reset my phone, but that just got me to a Google logo stuck (which I read about in your link in your signature)..
Because adb doesn't detect my device I'm unable to pull build.prop... which means I feel stuck again.
Would you have a direction for me to go towards to continue my journey through Nexus5-Land?

If you're using Windows 8, 8.1 or 8.1U1 you'll need to disable driver signature enforcement.
Try flashing the factory images in fastboot?

Could somebody not just make a flashable zip with the correct build.prop?
Failing that, just reflash the ROM.

Glad you got it sorted but, unless you couldn't boot into recovery, you didn't need to go back to stock.
Flashing the correct build.prop or ROM you were using should have sorted it out, without losing any data (you would have lost any system mods if you flashed the ROM again, though).
I'm only mentioning this in case somebody else searches and finds this thread for the same problem.
I've changed the build.prop loads of times on many devices and only once it went into a bootloop. Flashing a build.prop zip sorted it.

[Q] Nexus S 4G won't boot past Google Screen!!

I tried rooting my phone, but when I flashed CWM my Nexus S stopped booting... it freezes on the Google screen in the intro. I can boot into Fastboot, and cwm, but I cant connect the Internal memory to the computer without it booting like it is supposed to. Does anybody know of anything I can do to fix my phone and bring it back to stock??
There are guides for returning to stock stickied in the Nexus S 4G Android Development forum.
Before you do that though, try flashing a different recovery, like the one linked to here or here.
Btw, which guide did you use? You're not the first person to have this problem, and it's really bugging me (though probably not as much as it's bugging you :-o).
Maximilian Mary: I tried to post the link, but since I'm a new member I have to wait 8 posts before I can post a URL.... :/
I will try a different recovery, but how would I flash a rom if I can connect my phone via usb mount?

I'm a little out of my depth here, but I think it's
fastboot flash system system.img.
You don't need to put the rom image on the sdcard. Just put it in the same folder as fastboot.
It was titled "How to Root Nexus S!"
And I will try to flash recovery and try that rom command, thank you )

There's a button for that.
I got the link. Thanks. I looks like you flashed a boot image that is incompatible with your phone. That guide was for the T-Mobile Nexus S. (Why they're screwing with the boot.img to begin with, I really don't understand.)
Download the attached file, and unzip it to the same folder as fastboot. The md5 sum is d4a9508f9321eb25df3383f00f571e8b. Then
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
You'll probably also want to use one of the recoveries listed above to
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
, but leave system alone for now. Flash that only as a last resort.

same problem with me.
but in my case, the phone not only freeze after the google logo before boot. I tried several times to pull the battery and start the phone again, it took several times until the phone can boot normally again.
After that, my nexus s can work as usual. but it only takes 3-4 hour until it freeze/hangs or reboot automatically and show image of green robot lay down with red alert triangle...
sometimes I noticed all application force closed like gmail, gtalk, etc. (its a basic apps instead of 3rd party app)
History :
- root GB 2.37 using superoneclick
- upgrade OTA to ICS 4.04
- problem happens
- root using guide : nexusshacks.com
- unroot using guide : nexusshacks.com
- back to factory setting on GB 2.34
- upgrade OTA to ICS 4.04
- Still got that problem.....
I'm using Nexus S 4G Sprint, pls help me guys...
nexus s won't boot
I had the same problem and read elsewhere that heating the phone with a hairdryer solves the problem.
I must say, indeed it did.
I removed the battery and the SIM card, then heated up the phone (so it really feels warm) put back the battery and sim and simsalebim the phone started again. and is still working since (now already a few day's)
It seems that a component in the phone is heat sensitive, the question in my mind is when will this show again and do I need to consider buying a new phone.
But sofar it works
PS I also tried hard reset factory reset the lot, but in the end only heating up helped.
Good luck, David
I fixed this problem! but I had to wipe all user data by rooting it using nexusrootICS. It finally boots up and the phone works now... that's all I need.

moto g does not boot

hello everyone,
i'm developing a game with unity and sometimes when i compile and inject the game on the phone it crashes and forces me to factory reset the phone through fastboot. i've done it like 3 times already with no problems.
but today it happened again and the phone just wouldnt recover, i've tried the fix that this video (youtube.com/watch?v=laU6NQ0LxR0) shows but it still does not boot.
I am able to enter fastboot and my computer recognizes the mobile phone so that's a great start :victory:
not sure what guide to follow since i'm not sure whether the problem is on the rom or something else.
can someone give me a tip on what fix should I try? cant really afford to lose my phone right now
it has (had) a stock rom 4.4.2 with stock bootloader, tho i tried to install the fix in the video i've said earlier and i'm not sure whether it changed the rom or not.
thanks

/Data gets corrupted
Even, I had the same issue. I tried flashing ROMs through recovery but it gave me error that/data/media/0/ can't be mounted. The only way to get out I found was to full format /data and /storage (philz recovery) and then to push ROM. zip to/sdcard through adb and then to flash it through recovery.
Hope it helps someone.

Hello, today I decided to unlock, root my phone. I also decided to install new rom. And everything went fine but befor installing I insted Factory reset I formated data. I don't know what I was thinking. It may be that I was using TWRP Touch for a first time. Can somebody help me get back to at least to Stock if it is possible. Is it possible to connect phone in TWRP to transfer data from computer to it?

Does mount usb work on twrp? If so you can copy a rom zip to your device. If not than use search here on xda or google you probably need to unroot again and restore with a factory image.

ADB / Fastboot / Driver problem

Hey guys,
I am pretty new to the rooting stuff on the Nexus.
I read the sticky threat from rootSU (http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...urce-guides-info-threads-linked-read-t2784527) and followed his description. So I installed ADB and fastboot through the "15 sec. installer" (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979).
So fast so good, everything went fine. But as I tried to "check" if ADB and fastboot are recognizing my device with the command "adb devices" and "fastboot devices" in cmd, I got some strange output (look at the picture).
How can it be that ADB "sees" my device and fastboot not? What I did wrong there?
(I didn't installed the drivers with the 15 sec tool; when I plugged in my device to the computer, it downloaded the drivers itself)
Any help would be very appreciated!
Follow the next step on my thread and install the naked drivers
Okay thank you!
I'll try it tonight and report back.
I also thought of a problem with the drivers, but I thought that I messed up with installing ADB and fastboot somehow, because ADB could recognize my device.
One question again: When I uninstall the Nexus 5 drivers and I reconnect my phone to the pc, it download the driver itself.. How can I stop that to install the naked drivers?

Damn, thats it! I am so dumb! I don't know how I could forget that.. I read it some hours ago.
After I went into bootloader mode, fastboot recognized my device!
Thanks a lot guys, now I can go to the next step to root my device! =)
Btw.. another question, which is offtopic - does it makes a difference to root KitKat or Lollipop? I guess the guides around here are all made for KitKat and I don't want to mess up. :/ Thx!

@rootSU has posted some new guides on rooting Lollipop, so best read his threads in the General section
To root Lollipop you have to use Chainfire Auto Root. There is extra security in Lollipop that keeps the old root method from KitKat from working.
Oh I see..thats annoying. But thank you for your answers! I guess I'll read those threads. =)
Btw.. Can you guys tell me if I understood everything..:
To go back to the official 4.4.4., I don't have to root my device, right? I "only" have to unlock my bootloader and flash the official factory image through fastboot. And afterwards I could root my device using the guides around here on xda.

[Q] Nexus 5 Bootloop

So let me start by saying I am 100% a noob, and I have read many threads trying to get to the bottom of my problem to no avail. I am sorry if there is a solution for my problem somewhere, I've been working on this issue for 24 hours and have yet to find it.
My girlfriend was apparently using google maps on here relatively new phone (running 5.0.1) and it crashed. Upon restarting it was stuck on the coloured dots screen for several hours. She has not installed any third party apps, only those from the playstore and not too many of them at that.
I tried factory reset and received a bunch of errors about failing to load the E:// or something like that. The phone still would not boot up.
I downloaded minimal fastboot thinger on my windows 8.1 laptop and tried to flash a new image of 5.0.1 on it, IIRC I received errors about E:// again
Got Wugfresh NRT and tried TWRP wiped all (still saw some stuff about E:// failing to mount and such) then tried to unroot flash stock with soft brick/bootloop checked.
Still bootlooped for over an hour when I started it up.
Tried flashing 4.4.4 instead. It worked. Phone booted up. Gallery/Camera do not work however at this point. Tried updating to 5.0.1.... phone restarted bootloop for 8 hours and counting.
Flashed 4.4.4 again, Followed Full Driver Installation Guide in NRT exactly. Tried Flash Stock + Unroot with Device is on/Normal checked this time instead. Now it has been colored dots screen for about 20 minutes.
So I can load 4.4.4 but no matter how I've tried to install lollipop 5.0.1, it stays on booting screen forever.
What do?
Thank you so much in advance and apologies for being a noob.
EDIT: More googling today. Looks like my E:/Persist partition is corrupted or something, trying to figure out how to repair it right now.

If I can bet it must be a corrupted persist partition. Lollipop will not boot if its gets corrupted but kitkat will do. If you could tell what is the actual error you see in twrp or cwm recovery then we could identfy the actual problem. But I am 90% sure the mount error is about persist partition.

You are correct sir I literally just identified that as the problem 5 minutes ago. Now the question is how do I fix it.

I'm actually looking at that right now! Downloading Java and Android SDK atm. Of course still a little shaky on a couple terms in your guide hopefully I can sort it out. Really confused as to how Google Maps on a vanilla nexus 5 could corrupt a partition like that, its all google endorsed and official. They should be fixing my phone not me lol.

If you want to make it quick then allow me to join to your pc through teamviewer. Send your ID and Passowrd to my e-mail: [email protected]
If you try to do it alone and you face a problem then I might not be here, because it is already past 11:30pm here.

Thanks for the offer. I'll try on my own and get back to you maybe tomorrow if I can't get it down.
Alright so I am definitely having problems running adb shell. even if I change the directory in cmd to my adb.exe location (android\android-sdk\platform-tools) I keep getting the error adb shell is not a recognized blah blah blah....
NVM got it working. Whenever I get frustrated enough to make a post I end up finally finding a solution.
ALRIGHT I have Lollipop up and running thanks to your guide on fixing persist partition. Thank you so much! Question: I have a nexus 5 and it does not have an sd card. I'm not sure how to proceed in doing the steps you described involving mac addresses. I did use a hex editor and make those files, but not sure where to put them in my phones internal storage, and how to direct adb to said location. Any help with that?

Just copy them to the root of your internal storage, then follow the guide.
I mean you just open the phone's internal storage from your PC and you dont open any folder. You just copy it there.
The guide is for nexus 5, but some people refer to the internal storage as sdcard too. I know it is a bit confusing. Thanks to point it out. I will make clear in my guide now.
AH I see ok I will do that tonight. Ran in to another problem though it may be related to the mac address thing I haven't done yet, not sure how that all works. The phone randomly restarts every few minutes and it won't connect to the carrier either. Also if it matters I left the boot loader unlocked for now until the phone is working properly, if that affects anything.

The lock state of the bootloader does not matter, but this random reboots after a few minutes is something to worry about. Your phone should not do that after formating persist partition.
