Need info on mount options when flashing roms - T-Mobile Sidekick 4G

Ok so I know when I flash a rom I need to have unmount, mount, mount, and unmount... for sure unmount sys. I read the others don't really matter... but I just want to know what they all mean and do I need to do the same when I am done flashing b4 I reboot. I also read that once cwm goes from ornge text to red you don't have to mess with mounts at all. Is that for a particuler rom or all roms... I can't reall find anything that really talks about it. I just see "check you mounts" ...

As i understand this means that the data is in the internal memory of the phone at the moment and you can't rewrite it with another data.
So you must unmount this data to get the access to rewrite it.
P.S. you don't need to unmount\mount system after you flash the rom, this is made automatically or doesn't matter (sorry , don't know a lot about this thing)

Oh, forgot something)
If you don't unmount system and data before you flash the rom you can brick the phone and the only way to revive it is ODIN

what about backups

but there are some roms that say make sure sys is unmount b4 booting after flash.. and some say make sure sys is mount... i wish the phone was more popular with more devs. but on another note, so when i want to go to another backup i have do i need to mount/unmount? and fyi on rom manager i can edit my backups but when i try to make a backup or restore to a backup via rom manager it takes me to the normal recovery.. not the cwm recovery. i have to ether do the update.zip or just turn the phone off and hold the valume+power then it will take me to cmw or (cmw voodoo) witch im not sure what voodoo is... im full of qustions. lol sorry everyone!

I've been reading the forums for a while but don't fully understand this mount issue either so finally decided to make an account to clarify
So basically when flashing a custom ROM, all the devs tell us to check mount so we don't soft brick the phone. They say the mounts should look like this:
UNMOUNT CACHE
MOUNT DATA
MOUNT SDCARD
UNMOUNT SYSTEM
Click to collapse
But I'm a bit confused about this.
1. Is this what the screen should say? In which case DATA & SDCARD are not mounted (and clicking on MOUNT would mount them obviously) and CACHE and SYSTEM are mounted?
OR
2. This is what we should do before flashing .. i.e UNMOUNT the cache and the system?
Sorry, I know this is a noob question but I didn't wanna take a risk and end up soft bricking
Thanks in advance!

Befor I flash the rom and after flashing the rom right b4 rebooting my system, and haven't soft bricked at all. I also make my mounts look like that b4 I recover to a backup I made and after it is done b4 I reboot sys just to be safe. Hope this helps you. Agean this is what I have been doing and I have had no problems

So basically I should UNMOUNT the System and Cache in recovery before flashing, and again after flashing but before reboot? Should SD card and data be mounted during this or does it not matter?

Edit:
This post by rpmccormick says I need to MOUNT them tho :S
rpmccormick said:
Finally, the mounts thing is something unique to our phone, but yes, for this phone you should check your mounts before flashing a rom, and before rebooting after flashing a rom. AFAIK, all 4 should say "unmount" meaning they are all mounted. I don't know why HewettBR suggested that data&sdcard should be unmounted (probably nothing matters other then system [and maybe cache] being mounted).

As I understand, in recovery the mount screen should say this:
UNMOUNT CACHE
MOUNT DATA
MOUNT SDCARD
UNMOUNT SYSTEM
Click to collapse
But that to me means CACHE and SYSTEM are MOUNTED [so you have the option to UNMOUNT them] while DATA and SDCARD are NOT MOUNTED?

That kinda confused me. But that is why I posted this thred some people say to do diff than others and I was hopping that someone could say what was the right way and explane exactly why and what and when mounts should be changed. But like I said
Unmount
Mount
Mount
Unmount
Has worked for me. I just make sure they are like that b4 and after I do ANYTHING in recovery

Hey, thanks for the reply. So I think I understand now ... you say you make sure the screen is like that before you do anything right? Means you have SYSTEM MOUNTED so I'm gonna do that .. hopefully I'll be fine.
Its just confusing with the wording as some people say to unmount the system but I don't know if they mean it should be unmounted (which would say MOUNT on the screen) or what ... eh ://
So basically before flashing and after flashing but before rebooting, the screen should say
UNMOUNT CACHE
MOUNT DATA
MOUNT SDCARD
UNMOUNT SYSTEM

And if it doesn't, just tap on it / click it, etc so it changes.
I think I got all that!
Phew lol.

yep you got it :victory:

In the mounts and storage area of CWM it should show a UMMU format. I'm on my phone so I can't put to much detail, but I posted a more detailed explanation in the development thread that should help you out.
Thank you for your effort of keeping the development thread clean.

is there anyway we can add a chinese language for the system?
I know many people don't put much faith in benchmarks, but they have to measure something right?
That said, ~3700 on 3 run average. Using out of box SD Card.
It's smooth, and no problems yet (except for known "buddies" FC).

Looks great, love the theme. Can you put some sort of indicator on the bottom when you drag the notification pane down? Plain black matches the bezel, and I keep losing it lol. Love the keyboard.
Shutdown still reboots, and I think it may need a battery stat wipe, but I've burned 5% typing this. (Thanks for the % icon )
It's quick, isn't running "hot". But this phone always feels to warm anyway. Everything else is great, more insight on battery life tomorrow.

Ok efs in desktop is optional just as a precaution.
Mounts just set them as I mentioned. The idea behind ummu is that before ur supposed to see unmount in front of the word assigned.
Factory reset is tje option in the top menu of cwm recovery .
Formatting system will erase everything in ur phone making it unbootable if u exit cwm so flash rom before u exit.
And as long as u have rom on sdcard u can flash it

I would start the process from Recovery Mode. I would go to the section called Mounts/Storage first and format system. Then I would Unmount System and Unmount Cache. Then go back to the first screen in Recovery and find Wipe Data/Factory Reset. After you are done that, flash the ROM

[Q] Ooops - Tab's funked. Help!

P6800 running Zeta
I was browsing facebook the other night when... shaboom - everything froze. No biggie I thought, I'll just do a little reset (I was getting a few FCs here and there anyway lately) and I'll be good to go...
NOPE. It started bootlooping at the initial Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 screen. I'm able to enter CWM recovery and even wipe the cache and flash ZIP files, but when I try to wipe data/factory reset, wipe the Dalvik cache or restore a Nandroid backupI get a System Error. It doesn't look good.
Is there a way to fix my seemingly funked /system without losing all my internal SD card data (where my Titanium backups reside) or to recover it before a full Odin flash?
Just tried again - it reboots and goes into a loop when I try to wipe data and dalvik, and when I try to restore a previous backup it gives me "Error while restoring /system!"
Any help greatly appreciated before it becomes a $600 door stop
Do you dare to wipe the system folder and follow by flashing another ROM?

Do you mean via Odin? Will I lose the data on my internal SD card by doing that? Is there any way of mounting the device in its current state as external storage on my PC to copy all data before a wipe?
ZhenMing: I'm not sure what you mean, but as I wrote above I am not able to wipe the system folder.
yes you will loose your data... i can give you another advice... but do this one carefully... the reason why your device cant wipe any /system or /data is because the corrupted partition... you need to check it... follow the guide in this thread...
USE ONLY PART 3... follow the guide start from this para to check your device...
Code:
Now we are going to use e2fsck to check our new partitions for errors, but not only, it also fixes some erros and it will even for example create lost & found in /data
So let's go, we'll begin with /system. If you're still in the (parted) shell, use ctrl+c and type "adb shell", then issue the following :

Since you can go into cwm, you can mount your storage and then connect to PC to copy all you want.

But won't it downsize the int sd size, if OP tab still under warranty, better to get it fix by samsung for free and not lost any space.
Just reading the 1st post of the ZETA rom thread.
He says he is using stock Kernel.
He says every 5 lines, that you should full wipe...
without giving any sort of warning that it will eventually brick your device.

Tried that one, but it won't mount unfortunately. The external will no problem, but when I try with the internal it just... well it does nothing. It's a bummer cause all my most recent backups are on the internal. Any other way of retrieving my data short of extracting the chip?
Giving it back to Samsung sounds like the best option, but I'm worried cause it has a custom ROM and it's rooted. Anyone has experience doing that?
Also I thought full wipes were good, but you're saying they eventually brick the device? How come? I thought having a custom recovery meant it would be virtually impossible to brick my device... and the weird thing is that it happened during normal usage, not while flashing.
Anyway, my priority is obviously to get my tab working again, but retrieving my internal data is second highest. Isn't there a flashable ZIP that would copy the contents of the internal SD into an external SD card? Surely this has happened to someone before me?
Thanks for all the answers, really appreciated!

Gotcha! Will try that one and post result - thanks!
how did your partition check go?
i'm annoyed that some partitions can be corrupted randomly even doing some mundane stuffs
even on stock ICS fw, i encountered DATA corruption by just deleting a contact
i guess you have softbrick..
here is what i did:
-flash stock Honeycomb firmware using Odin
-forced tablet into stock recovery mode
-wipe Cache/Data/Factory Reset
- reboot
when your tab is working again you could backup files from your internal EMMC and you could flash ROMS from there

Thanks for that. I haven't tried anything yet as I'm away till Weds, but I will then and let you know. So you're saying by flashing stock HC via Odin and wiping/resetting everything through stock recovery I won't lose my internal storage data?
that's what i experienced..but i could not guarantee that it will be the same for your device
i noticed that because old folder are not deleted when i rebooted, but i haven't checked if the system folders are cleared
to have a clean reflash i also format/sdcard on recovery..but don't do this on stocl ICS recovery since you might risk increasing the damage
try to format via odin the Honeycomb fw first [don't put PIT file neither enable Repartion, just normal flash]
then force it to enter recovery mode when it bootloops after reset
you might fix your device this way if it has softbrick
just resort to using PIT/repartition as your last option
Again I would not recommend repartition when tab still under warranty. Repartition the last resort only if the tab is without warranty after failing all other alternatives.

Ok I'm gonna do it. There are dozens of versions of HC for the 6800 though, can I just pick any or do I need to find out what it was running out of the box? Mine came from Singapore.

Dunno if this is a brick or not... deleted my system (no boot)

I can get into recovery but I deleted my system files... so must I use odin and a custom recovry (will i looose root?)
Or how does this work
if i could trasfer files onto it I be fine? anyway to force it open I can get into recovry still so there must be a way to force phone on to put files on it or to run a file from computer using twrp
mount usb storage.
mounted in twrp love this recovry problem solved.. note to self ... never delete alll data again
In recovery do your wipes and flash a ROM too easy. No ROM on phone like said mount storage and drop a ROM there.

its not really considered a brick if you wiped your "system", you just dont have a rom installed to boot from, you can just flash a backup in recovery, you did create a backup right, or just flash a rom from your sdcard

Mounting is the point where you can edit the files in the folder that you mount, it similar to that of mounting drives.
Similarly there are mounting such as when you use root explorers you can mount them as read/write or read only.
A Linux user can explain you in the best way, coz they usually mount their partitions as drives to work on them.

No need of mounting everytime you flash.
Mostly the zip files itself contains scripts to mount your partition, they do the job theirself.
In rare cases the developer of the flashable zip file would recommend you to mount the partitions required, in those cases only you need to mount through CWM

SM-G930F SDCard write only

I have just bought an S7 (SM-G930F) after years and years with my trusty S3 9-9300...
I have rooted it and installed TWRP. Otherwise stock. Added most of my trusty apps and 64Gb SD Card.
I have an odd senario. I can access the card and I can andd and make changes to content, BUT there are some things I can not do, such as change ownership and permissions, but more importantly, I can not back up using Titanium Backup. TB says the card is fuill, but further investigation it won't allow it to store to the card. It says it is read only.
How do I fix this very annoying delema, any one, please?

What do you think ithe problem is and do you think it can be fixed without yet another rebuild - I have done so many to get the phone working.

Hi
I think that the data partition is still encrypted or not totally decripted that is why you do not have full access
TWRP Op step 10
Only if you want internal storage or data to work in TWRP:
Go to [Wipe] -> [Format Data] (not advanced wipe) -> type "yes".
WARNING: This will wipe your internal storage, disable encryption, and factory reset your phone!
Go to [Reboot] -> [Recovery].
You need to format data ( no just wipe) to get full access
I would try to install again TWRP ( all steps) but of course the problem is your data will be gone
OK, but how does that help the SDCard?????
I ask as I want to make absolutly sure as I now have no backup as I had deleted all the TB files.

Hi
I think I misunderstood you , you are talking about your external SD card not the internal, right ? if so , sorry my bad .
Maybe you had already but did you try to format it again or a different root explorer?
Not yet..... Odd thing is I am sure it worked for a while, but you know how these things are...

This app may help out

* This app is likely only useful if you have a stock ROM. If you're running an aftermarket ROM like Cyanogenmod, then there is no reason to install this app (good aftermarket ROMs don't suffer from the problem that this app corrects).
Maybe....

And this
No, did not work. Wouldn't even recognise I had a card. So reformatted it and then wiped the phone, data, etc and factory reset. And just rebooted and installing, but still same problem. Also learnt how crap the Google and Samsung backups are. Just install the apps not anything useful. Hac'd with this crap phone.

Hi
Did you see @*Detection* comments , FAT is not the same as FAT32 , format the sd card in your PC and make sure you select FAT32
SO using my rooted file explorers, the issue seems to be that SDcard is owned by root and is rwxr-xr-x and I can't change it...

Take the card out of the phone, put it in a reader and connect to PC USB
Use something like minitool partition wizard free to delete all the partitions on the card, create a new primary partition, format to FAT32
Put it back in the phone and see how you get on

Hi
+1 @*Detection*
Also you are 100% you are root ? check with something like Root Checker to make sure
I had using gParted - I use Linux machines, still the same and I re rooted several times. and via other rooted S3s. Same.
I think that this is an ownership/group issue. The mount directory is "storage" owned by root, and it is interesting the two of my root file managers see it and the card as rwx-rwx-rwx and others as rwx-r_x-r__
and I suspect that apps like TB, parted (partition manager), Apps to SD, etc. are seeing the same. However, even with the file manager apps that see full access I can not change ownership or rw privileges..... REALLY ODD!!!!!!
SOLVED!!!! Hope this helps others.
In TWRP, Advanced, File Manager.... Find the SD Card, the change the permisions to 0015 This is the SDCard Group/ownership. It all works great now.
To tidy up I need to create a new mount point in / or storage and then a line in fstab. Know how to do that in Linux/Ubuntu, but not in Android even though it is one the same.
Any helps Please?????
