No SIM error - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi Everyone,
Are any of you receiving the "No SIM" error? My VZ S3 will start up fine, but within a few minutes, it says No SIM at the top and then the radio restarts. It will do this a few times and then the radio will just lock up. No data or voice. I took it back and they tried a few different SIMs including the SIM from my Nexus. All of them did the same thing. I asked for a new S3 and they wouldn't exchange it because they've been told it is a known issue and Samsung is working on a fix. Anyone else having this problem or know of a workaround?
Thanks,
Rob
Sorry if there's another thread on this. Searched for No SIM error and didn't find anything

Yep. Mine never fully locks up, but it happens constantly. Was gonna return it but from everything I've read Verizon won't do anything about it. Just waiting on a fix from Sammy.

I went to a different store. They replaced the phone and used the SIM from my Nexus. It's been working for a couple hours now, and before I couldn't get past a few minutes. I also got an apology for having to go to another store.

I had this problem only once. I believe it has something to do with the cell tower. This particular area I was in had 4g/full bars. Once I got to this job site. I tried to make a call and I got a "No SIM" error. Then my service status would change to a "No service" Icon. Seconds later 4g would come back up. I was at this location for 3 hours. I tried to make many calls/texts within that time and out of 30+ attempts I was only able to make 1 call. The rest were "No SIM". Once I left the area...2 miles out. I was able to make calls. I have not experienced "No SIM" error since then.

Mine was definitely not location specific. It happened everywhere from Milwaukee to Green Bay. I still have not had it happen on phone number 2.

I've been dealing with the same thing. Mine appears to be location specific. It only happens when trying to make a call or sending a text. I can use data all day without a problem. I've had my phone and sim card replaced neither fixed it. I tried loading cm10 to see if that would fix it but instead of saying "no sim" i got the locked sim card prompt asking for the pin to unlock it.
As for samsumg working on a fix, I've called them several times and every time they assure me that this is the first time samsung has ever heard of the problem. I've given up on them and just hope this becomes a big enough issue for our devs here to take a look at it.

[Q] Rogers - 2nd handset, Preparing SIM message

My first One X was showing this "Preparing SIM" message periodically and I eventually had the phone replaced when connections to Rogers service would drop out. In order to reconnect a reboot was required.
My 2nd device although stays connected to Rogers service just fine but I am still getting the "preparing SIM" message ever now and then.
The Rogers support people could not say anything about the message but I did have them put it on my record that I am experiencing it in the even that there is a problem after the initial no haggle swap period has passed.
If you are also having this message come up I would suggest you call into support and have them note that you are having this issue. Not that you will need to have the phone replaced but in the even you do, it's there on your account.
Has anyone else seen this on their phone?

Hey i used to have this problem. When i was using Sense.. Try using Apex Launcher and let me know if you have the problem still.
I've got the issue from your first phone. Been wondering if it's a hardware or a software issue. Seems to happen more often when I am farther from toronto, getting a worse lte signal. Could be anecdotal though. Don't know if I should exchange it for another one
Using apex since day one

I have an AT&T hox...the same thing happens to mine. Also, on the notification bar, it's has a triangle with an ! in it and next to it says something about restricted access. At first I thought it was they were getting Jacksonville fl ready for lte...nope.
Same thing on mine. Was on the phone with Rogers today and after disabling LTE on my end and switching to HSPA+, my data has returned and is working normally now.
Beamed from my Rogers HTC One XL
just got off the phone with At&T and HTC technical support...their answer was
huh? Never heard of that...most probably sim card reader going bad...
Wtf...and it just did it again. Going to return this phone for another one tomorrow.

So, do you get the replacement Artimus? How's your replacement?
Last time I went to replace mine, the manager give me a hard time. He replace my sim card, but I still notice it at least once a day. Now, the situation is bad because this phone is out of stock.
Please let us know your experience. Thanks...
Update: I have since done a factory reset and haven't experienced the issue since. LTE is working fine on Rogers now too.

"No Sim Card" error... Do I need a replacement?

So I've been experiencing intermintent connectivity, "no sim card error" and extremely slow speeds. This is my second gs3 ("Updated" sticker), and I have not rooted or flashed the device.
What options do I have? Should I get replaced again?

I get the same error. I called Verizon to report the problem and they replaced my SIM only for the error to reappear hours later. I would try replacing your SIM, wiping your device, and calling Verizon to report the problem. I've google'd this issue and it seems like a fairly decent amount of people are experiencing this problem. It may have something to do with the area in which you're experiencing this problem, but that is only a guess.

I got this once. I restarted the phone and it went away and hasn't come back yet. Worth a shot at least.
I've had this same problem. Replaced both phone and sim card and nothing helps. I believe whatever is causing this is the same thing causing the notification asking to unlock the sim card on some aosp roms. It seems to only happen in certain locations which leads me to believe that it has something to do with the phone communicating with certain towers or trying to connect in certain specific situations. Unfortunately both verizon and samsung are ignoring the issue and I don't believe it is quite common enough for any developers here to try to fix it. So, I would suggest switching phones if it's not something you think you can live with.
this happened to me last night, I went to a concert in a rural area, the phone was working great until I got to the parking lot, then I had no sms/voice, 4G worked great though.
I am assuming we will never receive a fix for this?
I also had "no sim" errors a few times while using CM10, but nothing like last night, my phone was useless the entire time I was there.
Then as I drove away it magically started working again.

No Sim problem, still inside 14 day window

My Galaxy S3 has the dreaded no sim problem. I receive this error when I try to text or make a call the action will fail, the phone will lose signal and I have to wait ~30 seconds before I can try the text or call again. I have 3 days left on my 14 day window to exchange the phone for another or just get a different model phone. I have scoured the internet looking for a fix but have not found one. If I do exchange my phone I will probably go with the Razr Maxx.
I don't want to have a phone I cannot use. I love the S3 but this problem makes me want to throw the phone every time it happens. What would you do?

Get a new SIM?
Bring it back to verizon and get a new SIM....
Do people really have such weak understanding of things like warranties?
You have an obvious problem and should take it to the store. They will swap your SIM and /or order you a replacement.

I went and got a new sim card. I have read multiple people say that generally this does not fix their no sim problem, nor does replacing the phone with another. I hope this fixed my problem. I have 3 days to try it out and make sure it works correctly.

Yeah, definitely DO NOT trade it in for a different model. The SIII has got to be probably THE best phone on the market. Just get the SIM card replaced. If you end up having to exchange your phone for another SIII make sure they give you a new one not a refurb.
Software issue
I too have the same problem. This isn't a SIM issue and post above was right that not changing the SIM or even the phone will help the problem. It's a software issue that Verizon finally acknowledged and will hopefully soon provide an OTA update. What's interesting is that it seems to be related to certain towers where I would get this error close to work but never close to home.

I agree with everything said here. This is not the phone nor the SIM swap that will help. I have two s3's doing the same identical thing only while at work. Soon as I leave from under that tower it disappears. I would either swap phones it wait it out, but I've yet to hear an eta on the patch.

Still have sim error after update who else?

Yeah just another update thread. Who here is still getting the no sim error after installing the update it is now worse for me! I am more of a reader and not a poster im just curious is there a work around for this like for example has anyone installed a rom and the problem went away?
LIttle Rant: I have had nothing but motorola smartphones Droid X, Droid Bionic, Razr Maxx so I got curious since the S3 is one of the top selling phones to check it out and let me tell you love the phone but getting that stupid error all the time is annoying I picked my s3 up thinking I could make a quick sell on my razr maxx but now im stuck switching back and forth between the S3 and the razr maxx Verizon even sent me a replacement did that help? nope now its been 3 days they have a ticket open so who knows any help would be apprectiated and lets hear your story!
I'm still getting it, even worse than before I installed the new modem (radio). It seems to be more prevalent in areas where it's switching from 4g to 3g and back. If I'm in an area that has a strong 3g or 4g signal, it never gives me that problem. Has to be a Verizon thing or something with the SG3 that can't handle the switching between the two modes, just not sure......

UPDATE: I can confirm that if I place myself in a particular position in town where my phone will constantly switch between 3g and 4g and I attempt to send SMS messages my phone inevitably drops all data signal and gives me the no sim and no connectivity message.
I haven't been to were I used to get them bad....but I got one in an area yesterday where I generally get a strong 4G single that I had never had the no SIM issue before.
I was not happy.
galaxy. s3. synergy. yadda yadda.
I am getting it all the time at my house sometimes to the point where the phone does not work at all but if I drive down the road phone works flawless no errors even at work no errors im starting to think it might not be the phone it could be there network but for the hell of it lastnight I switched back from my razr maxx at home and the phone worked fine and when I woke up phone was fine im wondering if this only happens when the network is more at peak operation im growing very frustrated with this phone might off it and just use the razr maxx or hope for another update.

I had the same situation just moving from one room to another in my house. Yesterday evening I received a text from my neighbor asking if I had noticed we were receiving a 4g signal in our area (we are in a rural area about 12 miles outside of Tallahassee, FL.). Since yesterday I have a solid 4g in my home area so the no sim problem has disappeared. But there are pockets of weak coverage areas on the way to work in town and at the Florida State University where I work and I continue to find small areas where the problem persists. It has to be the SG3's inability to handle the hand-offs between 3g/4g which produce the no sim problem. My Thunderbolt would handle the switching from 3g/4g much better and not produce the no sim error. I'm sure Samsung could remedy this with a software change (at least not display the no sim) when switching service.
I still have the error on 2 phones. Funny thing is it seems that now it is worse on my wifes phone where it was the other way prior to the update.
From reading this thread and similar threads/topics regarding the sim errors with the GS3, I figured I'd post this here. This is confirmed, my friend and I both have a GS3 bought on the same day at the same VZW store. She keeps getting a sim error while I have never gotten one regardless of coverage or 3G/4G switch frequency, I frequently switch from 4G to 3G when on the subway. She went into the store and requested a new sim card, wound up arguing with the rep, according to him there's no possible way the error could be related, she finally got a new card by calling reps at various levels. After doing a factory reset and reprovisioning the internal SD card with the new sim, she has not yet had a sim error with the newest OTA. So it seems many Verizon sim cards aren't necessarily defective, but are improperly configured with the VZW network. This is just an educated guess based off personal experience, hopefully this is helpful to those with frequent sim errors.

How do you reprovision the internal SD card with the sim? If you are correct, some people may be able to fix the problem by doing so with their existing sim cards.

I would also LOVE to know how to do this!!! Very frustrated with this!! Hopefully reprovisioning the sim finally works!!
After searching around, I found to reprovision, you need to go to stock and dial this in the dialar, *2767*3855#. My question is,
- Is it def not possible to do this from an AOSP rom?
- When they say "go to stock", can I just flash a TW based rom and do it?
reprovisioning does not work, don't waste your time

Agreed, I have reprovisioned before, to no avail. I thought it might be my SMS client, GO SMS, but I am getting the same NO SIM error with that client that I get with Handcent as well as the stock messaging client.
I called Verizon back today, to note my account that it's still happening, and spoke to them about a replacement phone. (I am already on my second S3 and second SIM) They offered me my choice of Android device, which currently is a bad deal. So I asked them if their deal would hold true once the Note 2 came out, and the nice lady at level 2 support said yes.
So unless this gets fixed prior to the Note 2... a switch is almost inevitable for me.
Dont waste your time doing the reprovision does not work I tried it earlier today.

Interesting...I might be doing the same thing. This issue is beyond frustrating. However, I have not called Verizon about it yet. Mainly because there doesnt seem to be a fix. I dont want a refurb S3 and there currently isnt a valid replacement. Might try the Note 2 if its possible.

call verizon just so that they can put a note in your account.
vzw put a note on my account and I should be able to just call up and replace my S3 with something new... just have to wait for something good to come out

100% agree with Ripken... call them and have them note it in your account. Basically, I am documenting it once per day (it happens more, but calling more than once per day seems redundant) so they see it, but more importantly, I have some ammunition if I finally move to a new phone. Today's call to 2nd level tech support was a bit frustrating to me, as the nice lady said that, in fact, verizon did get a bad batch of SIM cards. When I pointed out that the bad batch must have been sent all over the country, because it's not a localized issue, and there was a software update addressing it... she didn't have a response. We went thru the same rigamarole with the phone... ie pull the battery, read the number on my SIM, read the numbers from my software build, etc. Again, she offered me any Android phone in exchange, which I turned down. But, at the end, she mentioned she was sending this issue up to a different tier of support that (her words) works with Samsung to fix these issues. I kindly asked her to have them address the headphone jack - bluetooth non-coexisistance, which she giggled at but assured me was working as intended.
So, back to waiting for a fix... or an inevitable new phone.
VRLHD Modem
Ok guys try this at your own risk! I might have found a fix looks like there is another modem floatng around called VRALHD I just flashed it in odin and guess what my phone seems to be working good here at home so try this at your own risk!
Download Link:
http://goo.im/devs/invisiblek/i535/modems
also if you google VRALHD modem galaxy s3 something will come up I cant confirm for sure this will help I will report back after some usage between now and tommorow.
Here it is on rootzwiki
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/34053-of...zon-sgs3-sch-i535-odin-or-recovery-flashable/
Guess I had high hopes for that modem does not fix the issues nevermind lol I am hoping when the jellybean update hits with a new modem this will fix the problem the waiting game begins.
Installed the HD modem last night. I have one area at work that I can test it. I'll report back later with my results.
Update: Flashed the HD radio last night (in CWM touch recovery), install went fine. Didn't have an opportunity to check it out till this afternoon when I put myself in a exact known location where I could reproduce the 3g/4g constant hand-off with the "no sim" notification. Sent out 6 text messages and a couple of phone calls with no problem. Either this new radio did the trick for me or it may be coincidental that Verizon has corrected this "dead" area that would produce this problem without fail everyday I was at work. Couldn't tell you for certain. All I know is that it's not happening anymore at this particular location. I used to have the "no sim" "out of area" notifications constantly at my home until just last week when Verizon finally covered this area with a strong 4g service. Only time will tell as I travel thru areas that have weak coverage. It's very obvious that this problem stems from weak coverage areas and the SG3's inability to handle the transfers effectively.

[Q] Text messages get "stuck"

Just like the title says. My text messages will get stuck. They won't come through for several hours, I'll send one, or make a call, and suddenly I'll get 5 or 6 messages at the same time. It's the same story with voicemails. I'll miss a call, and not get the voicemail for several hours. I have a feeling it's a network issue, but is anyone else having this issue with the Skyrocket?
sounds like its a carrier problem....i have similar problems here in Jamaica.... i wont get voicemails for days sometimes even months i guess ur carrier is backed up with traffic cause thats what happened when a carrier merged with mine
Where are you located and what carrier do you have?

Yeah, I've been having this issue for about 3 months now. I've replaced my SIM twice, the phone itself twice, had the software completely wiped and reinstalled, had someone change my APN settings, just about everything I could think of to do.
It may be time to switch to a different carrier...
Sent from my SGH-I727 using xda premium
I'd love to, but unfortunately, I'm on a family plan and can't afford to split off on my own.
Well no because it is not the carrier I am in Washington with the same problem on AT&T. But my roommate which I am on his plan never has the problem ever. It was major at first its calmed down but still I don't receive my phone calls, texts sometimes and just randomly I will get a lot of texts. I almost always have full bars. I have also replaced sim card several times and phones.
You just described my problem exactly. Except mine keeps getting worse. There are 3 other people on my same plan in the house, and none of them have had the issue that I have. It's really damn frustrating.
