Google Wallet - Secure Element Question - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

My Google Wallet is working fine. However, I have read in numerous threads and websites on how many people have a "broken" secure element because they flashed a new ROM, performed a factory reset, etc. without clearing the data within Google Wallet. That brings up my question. When am I in danger of "breaking" my secure element? Is it ONLY during a factory reset/wipe+flashing a ROM? Will i be okay if i for example flash a theme or a ROM but revert back to a Nandroid Backup? How about dirty flashing a ROM?

Any time you need to restore a nandroid or flash something that could potentially cause you to have to wipe, reset Google Wallet just to be safe. It's better to just have to re add your cards than to never be able to use it again.

I assume I would also need to reset prior to installing an OTA update? And on that note do you think I'd have to edit build.prop again after updating?

I'm not sure about resetting prior to an OTA, as OTA's don't wipe data. As the app is already installed and your build.prop set back to Verizon's GS3, I don't see a reason to reset wallet before an OTA.
But if you're paranoid, sure, reset before an OTA.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S HardReset

Hi,
I upgraded my Samsung I9000, from Éclair 2.1 to Froyo 2.2, with Odin, (everything is working fine), but...
My question is;
If I do a Hardware Reset does the phone downgrades to is factory default, in this case "Éclair 2.1", or it stays with the last OS installed?
Does anyone knows what happens??
Cheers,
Striken
A hard reset is different than a master reset. Hard reset only entails removing the battery from the device.
To answer your question, once flashed with a ROM, performing a MASTER reset, will bring the phone back to "factory" defaults, i.e. just like it was the very first time you booted it AFTER installing the custom ROM.
Hope that helps.

Thanks Man,
You are talking in a Master Reset, how exactly do you do that?
When I did a software reset it erases everything on the phone, contacts, apps I installed, everything except what belongs to the Rom I installed. Also the phone stayed like when was installed for the first time...
From what I've read an Hard reset puts the phone to is factory defaults, but when I did a soft reset it also stayed "brand new", like factory default.
My question is: does a hard reset erases the rom I installed and puts my phone like it was before I upgraded with Froyo 2.2?
I never heard anything regarding a "Master Reset", can you explain me more?
Thanks,
Striken
Also interested in learning how to Master Reset before playing with ROMs.
Bookmarked for later, thanks!
Hi Kops,
If you also learn anything about it please post it here ok?
Thanks
I believe you can find the stock firmware for your phone (2.1 or 2.2) and use ODIN to flash to that. By doing so, you will revert to 100% stock settings, no root, and no proof that you've flashed your phone at all.
In my opinion, this is your best bet for a "full reset".
When you flash a new firmware, the firmware is permanently installed. Performing a factory reset will NOT revert your phone to its older version. Only a reflash will do this.
Factory reset only resets things that are stored in user data space. Such as your contacts, custom settings and any apps that you have installed (not counting those that Samsung/Google have put into the system)
So there you have it. You can safely perform that reset if you want.

Thanks for the help guys,
So, there's no difference between a soft and hard reset? Or is the factory reset an hard reset?
When I did a factory reset it erases everything and restored the phone to is default settings.
So, the only way to put the phone back like it was when I purchased is installing Eclair 2.1 again...
Thanks,
The only way to get 2.1 back is by reinstalling an official samsung firmware. Yes. If you have an official samsung firmware though, the phone is as it should be.
A soft boot is generally where you send the device a reboot command or turn it off and back on. A hard boot to reiterate generally happens after the battery is removed and reinstalled. This is not what is known as a factory reset and will not modify anything.
A factory reset formats the userdata and cache partitions and resets all settings to default including deleting any apps that were not installed on the factory firmware.
I hope this has answered your question.

It did, thanks.
The only problem is that I never found an official Samsung firmware, in this case the Eclair 2.1 from Vodafone.
If you know any site that have that Rom please share it
I would like to have it so I can restore the phone in an urgency...
Cheers,
Try samfirmwares.com

Already try that. They don't have it.
Or www.samsungfirmwares.com. they have an extensive collection of i9000 roms. Vodaphone is on the 3rd I9000 page.

Don't want to be a pain, but just one more thing if you or anybody knows...
When I both my phone it came with Eclair 2.1 from Vodafone like I said.
You presented me with a page that have the 2.1 stock Rom from Vodafone, but, originally the phone had a Vodafone startup animated logo.
Do you know if the rom in that page has that animation startup?
Thanks,
P.S. One more thing, when I said that I didn't find anything in that site I was mistaken, it was not that website but samfirmware.com website.
Thanks again,
Its a stock rom. Just like the one that shipped inside your phone. It will have all of the features of the ROM you started out with.

You can remove all user data that is located on internal memory by typing *2767*3855# in dial pad and NO it won't downgrade to previous firmware.

[Q] Best full backup for non-rooted tablet

Hi guys,
I just bought the TF700T and I'm loving it. However, I find that restoring my tablet to my own specification after updating the device is a bit tiresome. Now the reason I'm doing the factory reset is because I read online that THAT'S what you're supposed to do after updating the device (if that's not the case, feel free to let me know). Regardless, I'm hoping that there's an app out there (paid is perfectly fine) that will restore my device to my original configuration after a factory reset. Things that I'd like it to do are as follows:
1) Automatically re-download all my Google Play apps. I have other android devices, so I'd need the app to remember which apps were installed on the Infinity, and then download them after the reset. Also remembering their custom settings would be nice, too!
2) Backup media folders that I designate
3) If possible, restore widgets that I had set previously (though not necessary).
Lastly, I don't have root access and don't really plan on doing it.
Thank you!
if you are on stock unrooted ice cream and are trying to go to stock unrooted JB then you shouldnt need to do a factory reset. it should DL the update over the air and then install over ICS while keeping all your apps and files as they are.
but if you facotry reset, it will all be gone. titanium backup will do what you need, only if you root.

Thanks for your reply. The only reason I'm doing factory resets is because of a "guide" that purports that doing so will ensure flawless update. I personally do not know for sure.

You should do a factory reset after you manually downgraded the firmware. If you just accept the OTA updates, you should never need to reset. Which "guide" was that?

Oops I can't post links yet, but it's over at the transformerforums. Just google "How to update your firmware OTA - incremental changes & full OS updates"
But if you say it's not necessary, then I won't do it. Too much of a hassle for me to reconfigure all of my apps over something as small as an OTA update.
Thanks!

[Q] No notifications after Titanium Restore after factory reset

Ok, let me start by saying that I fully expect that I screwed something up, but here goes...
My 4G had stopped working and I decided now was the time to root and unlock my phone, since Verizon recommended a factory reset to fix the 4G issue. I rooted and unlocked my Jelly Bean OTA using this great thread and installed Titanium Backup to get a full backup of everything. I ran the factory reset (that was probably how I screwed something up) and (I think) reran the root and unlock steps (maybe didn't need to). Then, I restored everything using Titanium (pro version). No surprise really that 4G still didn't work (subsequent new SIM took care of that issue).
But, even with the "bad" SIM and the new "good" 4G-capable SIM, I'm not receiving ANY notifications for my apps. Nothing for Gmail or Google Voice. In fact, those apps actually seem to require opening them and pressing on the refresh icon to actually receive new emails/text messages. I have everything set to autosync and to provide notifications.
Any idea what I screwed up and how I can fix it? Since I've got a good backup of everything on an external microSD card, I'm wide open to suggestions here.
Thanks so much for any help you can provide. This is driving me crazy not having my notifications! :crying:
That sounds sketchy. It doesn't sound like you did anything incorrectly. Here are my suggestions...
Make sure your Google account is set to sync
In recovery, clear cache and dalvik cache In recovery, under advanced, fix permissions
If all that doesn't work, I may try another full factory reset. Then in TiBu only install apps (without data), and then restore only select app's data individually.
Hope that helps.

This exact thing happened to me. I was stressing out big time - even thought it was the ROM I was running that was messing things up. I was constantly sending myself test emails and waiting to see if they would be pushed to my phone (GMAIL).
The problem was my Titanium Backup Restore. If possible, do a factory reset of your phone - with whatever ROM you like. Before restoring your apps and data, try manually adding your gmail account and send some test messages. I'd be willing to be you will receive push notifications.
If so, try restoring your backup but uncheck and gmail related items. This solved my problem - let me know how it works for you!
I got antsy before I was able to see these messages and went ahead and flashed back to full stock. Verified all notifications are working correctly, and proceeded with all the OTA updates to get me back to Jelly Bean. Now, I'm going to re-root and unlock. I'll restore selectively on apps and not restore Gmail or Google Voice, though it really did seem like ALL notifications were somehow stopped.
I'll post back with my results.
Thanks so much!

Actually, this brings up a question, once you're rooted and unlocked, what exactly does a "factory reset" reset you to?
Thanks.
It wipes the /data partition. Basically all user apps+data.
You will remain on the same ROM, retain root and your bootloader will still be locked

Is this from the standard menu factory data reset or only through the custom recovery?

[Q] JB update via Kies - Any precautions?

Hello,
I have an ATT Skyrocket on ICS (I727 UCLIC3). It's all stock and not rooted.
When I connected to Kies, I get a notification stating Android 4.1.2 I727 UCMC1 is available
1. I wanted to check if this update any known issues? and if i should take any precautions?
2. If I don't like this JB, is there an option to revert back to stock ICS? or is it point of no return?
If yes to question #2, How do I do a full back up before update? Should install CWM or TWRP for that?
And then I have to factory reset before JB update so the custom recovery won't interfere with JB upgrade?
Thx
Best advice is for you to read all of the stickies in the Skyrocket sub forums. Also, read the threads that have already been started about the update. The answers to all of the questions you asked and much more are there. It will also help you to learn ways to prevent hard or soft bricks, and what to do if you encounter issues. Good luck.
If you install CWM, you need to be rooted. If your rooted, you can't update to JB. Also, there is a thread with issues of JB. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2230909
I am pretty sure there is a way to do a backup on stock. Forgot though. Search though. The answer could be there.
Thx.
One more question: Should I reset factory reset my skyrocket? (before I let Kies update it to JB)?
I may have uninstalled or disabled some at&t bloatware... hence wondering it's better to factory reset before JB update...

Not necessary to revert to factory settings before you update using kies, sure all the settings of your currant rom will be lost once you're on JB, but data on your internal sdcard should be left intact like pictures and music..Better to back it up some where before you proceed..
I didn't do anything at all before updating (I use the standard AT&T firmware) and all I really lost was my home screen layouts; all my apps were still there, settings intact, still logged on as applicable. I did have a moment of panic when the phone first started up when it brought up the AT&T app that sets up a new phone from scratch. I thought that meant that it had done a full factory reset, but after getting out of that everything was there except for the re-initialized home screens.
I did the JB update via kies. So far all good. yes, I had to resetup my app shortcuts.
I read that this update should provide skyrocket users with the "Smart Stay" feature... but i don't see it anywhere under settings.
Btw, should i factory reset my phone now AFTER JB update? in case something is still not activated or something

If everything seems to be working, don't factory reset. With factory reset you will lose your apps and settings.

[Q] Reset option

Hello, I'm a total noob wanting to get rid of all the ATT/Google crapware. My HOX is total stock, never unlocked, rooted etc.. I did the latest update to 4.2.2. If I do a reset, what does it reset to? Can it be unlocked , rooted after a reset?
Thanks!

A factory reset will wipe all user data, apps and app data. It will not restore your phone to an older firmware that is rootable.
4.2.2 is not rootable at this time.

SO... would it at least get rid of the apps I don't want/can't remove now?
You can't remove system apps without root. As previously stated, a factory reset only removes user data and user apps.

OK, I thank you both! I guess I'll wait till the next phone to root.
"Facory reset" is really a misnomer and misleading. All it does is wipe the /data partition (user data). It doesn't affect the actual OS. So the ability to root (or not, in your case), bootloader unlock, etc. is not affected either.
