Hi, I searched for this but couldn't find anything. I'm wondering if it's possible to Bluetooth tether from my A2 to another phone (say Captivate). I saw a lot of info on how to tether to tablets, pc, and whatnot, but I couldn't find anything about tether between 2 phones.
I'm still in GB and not rooted. Thanks.

We need a lot or more info.
Like what kind of Bluetooth tethering, Cell data, personal data sharing, perifferral sharing. All of these can be done over BT, but some require root and changes to the files both phones to make that possible. So please tell us exactly what you are after before we can be of more help here. The more data you can provide here, the better help we might be able to give.

Thanks. I'm sorry for not putting more info. So, leaving technical stuff aside, basically, I want to give internet connection to my wife's phone. I have the A2 with a data plan, she has the captivate without a data plan, so she has to be in a wifi network to be able to connect. What I wanted is to be able to connect the phones over bluetooth and provide her with internet from my data plan, if we are out of the house.

You will need to root the Atrix 2 and do the following on the Atrix2 to share your data plan, but I would not do it over Bluetooth, I would do it over Wifi instead, as 1) Bluetooth is not secure and 2) Bluetooth can have speed issues with data transfer rates, as Bluetooth is not meant for steady data transfer.
If you do it over wifi, and follow the below link you will be able to use the internal wifi sharing on the phone in settings --> Wifi --> enable wifi hotspot or similar.

Thank you Jim. I did this before but I didn't want to use this method because I read that many people were being threatened by AT&T and that they were going to be charged for the hotspot service. I read that the bluetooth method is somewhat "legal" rather than disabling the entitlement check. My concern is mostly that I don't want to be charged by AT&T for this. I know people were worried because they had unlimited data plan. I just have the 2 gb plan, but still I wouldn't want to pay extra just for the tethering.

If you don't have the unlimited plan you have nothing to worry about. Those are the ONLY people that get those letters from AT&T, and you will have to share a good amount of data.
The Bluetooth sharing is also not legal, just that AT&T has not caught on to it yet, but it is not secure, if I was standing within 100 feet of you on the street, and you were sharing your data over Bluetooth, I could also "share" your data without you even noticing it, that is why the WiFi solution is preferable. I could also hack your WiFi connection, but it is much harder and not worth the time it will take with a phone to do so.

Well Jim, thanks a lot for taking the time to help me out! I didn't know that the targeted people were the ones with unlimited plans only (which seems understandable since it could be exploited a lot). I think I'll go back to the wifi hot spot then.

Honestly, one thing you might do, just for the heck of it, is to put a poll asking people if they have an unlimited data plan and have gotten a letter or if they have a tiered plan and have gotten a letter about sharing their data. Or if they are on an unlimited plan and share data and have never gotten a letter, and also those on a tiered plan that share that have never gotten a letter.
That might help ease your mind a little because, that is a poll that has not been done here in the Atrix2 forum yet, and might help more people than just yourself who might also wonder this same thing.

I know this is an annoying subject for some of you, but I haven't found clear answers on other threads. I am planing on tethering to Xbox Live and my Laptop. Is making a custom APN and deleting tether manager any good? Are there other and more effective ways? I am willing to take a risk and will stop if AT&T sends me a letter. I'm on CyanogenMod 10.

I could be wrong but I don't think there's any way to do that.
After doing some more research it seems some apps can kind of hide it but you will most likely get caught if not right away eventually

regardless what you do, the amount of data that you will use doing what you listed is what will throw AT&T a red flag.

Tethering xbox? I can see AT&T being all over that. Laptop i think is doable but again have to limit it to general surfing and emailing any heavy duty data usage like streaming movies will again be a red flag.
Red flags usually due to usage in a particular sitting.
If you thether intermittently should be ok.

Tethering guard is not a "tether police" app. It just controls tethering. Delete it and you won't be able to tether at all.
The only way to avoid getting caught tethering is to stay below AT&T's radar screen. That means keeping your data usage under control and not connecting to red flag sites like Windows update and, yes, Xbox Live.
If AT&T decides to check, there are numerous ways they can tell you're tethering, and once you're caught, the jig is up. They'll put you on a tethering plan if you keep doing it. There are no apps that are able to reliably hide tethering because there is evidence of it outside your phone.
There is some evidence they devote extra attention if you happen to have a grandfathered unlimited data plan.
I pirated tethering for years on my iPhones and One X and never got caught. I only tethered my MBP and was religious about limiting my data.
to allow native tethering on stock at&t rom all you do is a little sql editing of telephony.db which takes like 10 seconds. as far as detecting tethering im sure it depends on your area. i haven't ran into any problems tethering though. i don't understand why at&t would care since they already screw the people with unlimited anyways where after 5GB of data they throttle you to 500kbps, or that is what they do in my area.

The exact parameters by which AT&T is monitoring/policing for tethering seems to be unknown any anyone but AT&T insiders. It also seems to be a bit random. There have been reports by at least a couple folks on here that swear that they never even tethered, but got the SMS warning from AT&T that they were caught tethering, and any further tethering would result in being forcibly changed to a plan that allows tethering. While other folks use it occasionally and have never been caught.
The amount of usage is almost certainly a factor, so using it regularly for X-Box is probably not a good idea. The theory proposed by folks here, is that when certain red flags are raised by network usage, your traffic will be more close scrutinized, and the data packets examined for evidence of tethering. The checks are probably all network based, so changing anything on the phone will probably not help.
Personally, I use it only occasionally, for very limited time periods and data amounts, and have never been caught. Most often while traveling such as when a hotel WiFi is not available, crappy signal, or carries an excessive extra cost.
For some reason, I am getting an error when I try using t0mmy (found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1677261) one click tether enabler. I've done some searching and cannot find anyone else who has had this issue. What the heck am I missing (screenshots attached)?! Any ideas?

One other thing I should mention is that even when I am using `android-wifi-tether` it will not work. It just shows up as a device on my computer when it is turned on as a wifi hotspot.
I've downloaded SQLite Browser and have changed all fields with "broadband" to "pta". Still no go.

When I click to activate the native wifi hotspot, it says that I cannot have a hotspot and to call 611. So I am trying Android Wifi Tether, which works for a little bit then after about 3 seconds, says "what the hell, your phone is taking over. shutting down wifi." Something like that. I'm just trying to get this phone setup so my friend can use it as a hotspot.

Well, I do believe that it could be because you are using a stock rom, so att bulit in securities could be taking over. Also, I do want you to know that ATT does have advanced technology to detect tethering. without notice, they can upgrade you data plan to 5gb ($50) because you were caught tethering. it is the way the apn connects. now you can try to change your apn to BROADBAND, which is tethering, but again, but warned. if your data plan changes (esepcially if you are grandfathered into one), then that's on you...
so here are my suggestions: change the APN to broadband, get off the stock, and im sure there are a plethora of apps in the play market that should work

They will send you a warning (physical letter or SMS, can't remember which exactly) notifying you have been caught tethering without the appropriate data plan. Then, if you are caught again, they will change you plan.
Probably nobody except folks at AT&T know the exact methods they use to monitor for tethering. But the thought here is that a high amount of usage will raise red flags, then they will examine data packets for the signs of tethering.
Some folks (myself included) have been able to tether without getting caught, by just doing it occasionally, and keeping the data usage low. But even then, the system seems far from consistent. I've seen a couple of folks report on here getting the tethering warning from AT&T, despite having never even tethered.
The days when you could easily pirate tethering may be coming to an end. AT&T has really cracked down on it and improved their methods of detection. Even if you get this working, you will get caught if you start tethering regularly.

I do apologize, you are right. You will get a notice first. And then if you continue, then you will still bumped out. It is an email AND a SMS. Using small amount of data is usually the way to go. But if you trying to tether a computer, then most likely the data usage will be high. As I mentioned in other posts, as a former AT&T employee, if you want to tether, just upgrade your data plan. If you are on unlimited data, you will already get throttled at 3gb, so the Unlimited data and 3gb are basically the same thing, which is why the price is the same.
I have seem some accounts when excessive tethering is done, that the data is actually suspended, no matter what the case is. It's weird that AT&T can do that, but it is in their wireless agreement, which is at section 6 i think.
Thanks for the heads up about AT&T clamping down on this. It is good to know. I am doing this for an elderly couple who rarely use the internet. This is their first smart phone. They are savvy enough to know what that message means if they get it. I will let them know about it too.
They mainly will be accessing on the device itself but wanted the option to use it as a hotspot as well. They are already paying for data... they purchased the phone used and are under no contract (on Straight Talk). They want to use something they own, however they want. It's too bad AT&T is so mean.
It's like buying a computer and then the manufacturer says you cannot use bluetooth unless you pay them a monthly service charge.
[SOLUTION]
Oh yeah, I forgot to post that I figured a way out to get 'android-wifi-tether.apk' to work on the stock AT&T ROM.... here we go:
Get "Proxoid" from the Google Play Store
Get WiFi Tether from the Google Play Store (or from here [QR Codes in link]: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/)
Get a mobile data widget
Once you have them installed, get them all lined up somewhere you can easily run them one after the other.
Make sure mobile data OFF before you turn anything on.
Open Proxoid and check the box to start/stop Proxoid... you want it ON
Open WiFi Tether and turn on tethering
Now you can turn on mobile data
This worked successful for me. I tested it for about 10-15 minutes, playing YouTube videos, reading some blogs, checked out some google image searches and so on. If you do not turn Proxoid on before mobile data is on, this will NOT work.

UPDATE: This only worked on my Mac and Android phone. Mac picked up the HOX as a "device" instead of a wifi connection but it worked. Windows cannot find the connection at all. If someone knows how to get Windows to find the device and use it as a hotspot please let me know.
While tethering is a feature of the phone they own, the data being used is a service that is not owned and while I don't agree with what at&t does, I can understand why they would discourage tethering and it is technically within their right to limit how their data is used. They/you could have picked another company that allows tethering but as a consequence you may face saturation from all those heavy tether users.

Which is the reason behind the detection. Same as throttling. With the explosion of bandwidth needed, the big companies cannot keep up. Hence why smaller companies offer unlimited data.

The Portable Wi-Fi hotspot function of my phone is working flawlessly right now. That is very important. I would appreciate any suggestions for a new phone. It doesn't have to be something currently out. It could be something coming down the road.
There are three requirements:
I must be able to enable the Portable Wi-Fi hotspot, and (able to enable, funny)
Acquiring this phone must not affect my unlimited data plan at Verizon, and
It must an Android phone
If anyone has recommendations concerning upgrading your phone at Verizon without jeopardizing an unlimited plan please add that as well.

i dont think verizon does unlimited plans anymore. but if your fine with rooting a phone that your going to use for phone purposes you can wifi tether for free i think any phone would be fine for you, gonna be maybe a little more specific on what you want. i mean like screen size, battery life, Cpu.

I have an unlimited data plan. I am grandfathered in to it. Believe me, they would love to get that from me (and everyone else that has one). It's a matter of being very careful about what changes are made to your plan or phone as they are always looking for a way to screw ya out of it.
So, the requirements I mentioned above are still good. I need a new phone that I can root and enable the native Portable Wi-Fi hotspot so as to utilize my unlimited data plan. And, beyond that, if you or anyone else has any inside information, a new phone that wont require me to change my plan or otherwise jeopardize my current plan with unlimited data.
As for budget, it doesn't really matter. I can get what I need to get.

hmmm you might have to do a bunch of research into it then.
I just was in a similar situation...I went with an HTC one from Tmobile even though Im on ATT...covers mostly all the networks (I travel internationally a fair amount), once you unlock it and is easy to root. No complaints so far
So I've had the grandfathered unlimited data a LONG time but now there is a possible better option.
I have four lines on my account, only I have unlimited data. The recent DirecTV deal is something like ~$150 for four lines of unlimited everything (same 22gb/mo data shared before some sort of throttle) as long as you have a DirecTV account.
The net difference is about $140/mo cheaper for me and everyone gets 'unlimited' data. My parents will probably carry their DirecTV account for at least another 10yrs...
I'm a serious power user and usually use about 30-50gb/mo. I don't even notice the slow down with what I do.
Worth sacrificing the grandfathered personal unlimited which is now $35? I'm not sure I know all the details so I ask here. Thank you!

Did you switch to the new Unlimited Data plan with Directv
If yes where you able to use rooting or foxfi to tether. They offer no tethering plan with the new unlimited. I was wondering if there is a workaround.

Yes I did switch to the Directv unlimited and I've never even considered a tethering plan. It's always worked and I get the occasional text message informing me that tethering plans exist. With the new directv plan I haven't gotten a single text or letter about it. I only use android things so it's pretty easy to get some utility that does what I need. I'm currently on the OnePlus Three which does tethering default as part of the OS. I don't use it a lot, but it's extremely useful when I need it. The ATT rep told me, that I cant add tethering option to the new Unlimited plan even if I want to pay for it. But you are telling me that hotspot just works
So ATT does not block third party WIFI hotspot tethering or if it is built into the OS with the new unlimited data plan. Have you tried this on other android phones or just the One plus.
I am thinking of switching to ATT because of this plan, but the Hotspot is must for me.

I've only had the oneplus 3 on the new plan but I can tell you I'm on USB tether right now and it's 100% flawless. I tested wifi too but as we all know, wifi just isn't as snappy as a wire. lemme test it on various devices for you later today. The wifi hotspot, not the tethering ability...bit too lazy for that, sorry.

That would be great, really appreciate it. I mainly need the wifi Hotspot. Have you been going over the 22GB throttle limit, if so are they slowing you down.

Even on the previous unlimited plan they would throttle you after only 5gb. I pass 22gb in the first two weeks every month. Sometimes in the first week. I don't even notice anymore if it's slow or fast. I'm sure it's being throttled but it's still fast 'enough' for me not to care. I was really skeptical of the plan but it's actually working out pretty well and it's FAR cheaper than I ever expected. Especially if you're getting your own phones...the oneplus 3 is excellent.
So Ive done some searching and since Verizons new unlimited plan is only about 5 days old Im stuck sifting through 100s of grandfathered unlimited plan posts searching for hotspot hacks. That being said heres my scenario.
My house is rural, I wouldnt consider it rural but apparently Im rural enough for the utility companies to find it rural. Never thought 2 miles off a major highway would constitute that but anyways. This means Im in a situation a lot of people are in. I like my privacy, IE owning property and not being on top of my neighbors, but I also grew up tech savvy and playing games. Im heavily dependent on the internet and like my MMORPGs... Im never expecting to replace my satellite TV with streaming for the record.
Im trying to find my best internet option. Ive been through the gambit here... Hughes net, Excede, and now on to a local fixed wireless provider. Im semi satisfied with my fixed internet provider and its been the best of the 3 but Im still stuck at 4g speeds although no data cap. My biggest issue is varying speed with them and Ive taken this concern up with them a couple times but Ive never been provided with a real solution. I was fed a BS answer of "maybe try having less things wifi'd". Im signed up for 5-7mbps with no data cap at the moment for $75 a month. If I received a steady signal I would be very happy with that. Sure its not great for heavy internet browsing but playing an MMO it would be great. But then it happens, I get .5mbs down randomly and a 400ms ping...
Ok so sorry for the long back story. My biggest concerns here are hitting a consistent connection with a moderate data cap. What Im looking into doing is adding a hotspot and upgrading my verizon plan to the new unlimited with an exterior 4g lte cell amplifier. 1 mile away as the crow flys I get 50mbps down and 70 ping on the highway on my phone...
So Im curious if there's any hack or mod to beat out these stupid 10 gig 4g lte speed caps they've placed on the hotspots? Or maybe theres a better combination of hardware I could use here that would be blind to verizon?
If theres a better section or even a forum out there more oriented towards what Im trying to do?

There is no way to hack your data limit or data speed, that's all controlled on the network, not on the device.

I kind of figured that. Maybe I worded this poorly. What I'm curious is if there's some sort of way to mask the tethering. Like if I purchase my own 4G LTE modem and then transfer a sum card from an existing unlimited device into the modem, is verizon going to know to cap my data at a 10gb tether or are they simply going to think it's still a tablet and give me 22gb full speed? And I guess the second question would be is there something I can manipulate on my end to "fool" what type of device is connected kind of like how people used to tether the grandfathered phones by swapping the SIM cards and editing some network configuration in the phone?

Well, with those questions, it isn't whether or not it can or can't be done. It's a matter of XDA not allowing this kind of discussion. We can discuss "how" to tether, but we can't discuss cheating the system, your limit is your limit, and your plan is your plan on the device you get the plan on, that's it.

Although I don't understand how this is any different than bypassing the tethering ban back in the day I'll leave it at that and say ok, thanks for your help.

Because it's a subject of splitting hairs.
It breaks down like this.
While enabling tethering on devices/plans that aren't supposed to have the option is frowned upon by the carriers, it is not illegal, nor does it exceed any preset data limits. Yes, you can tether when you aren't "supposed" to but it doesn't allow you to exceed your data limit, meaning, they lose no money. You're only using data that you've already paid for, you're just doing something they don't like by using that data in a different way.
On the other hand, when you get into hiding data to get more than the prescribed limit or faking which device they think it is, then they are losing money because you're cheating them by using more data than was paid for or by using a device that isn't approved for the plan.
On devices with unlimited plans, there is effectively no money "lost", you're just using more data than they expect for the average user, which can lead to them seeing it and throttling your data or even cutting you off completely.
It's all subjective, in other words, do what you want with the device itself but don't screw the network.

Right. I'm really not trying to screw them. I just want my 22gb as they see fit on a device on my hotspot... I don't understand why devices are subject to better rules that the hotspot. If they have the bandwidth to bump me back to 4G LTE after I hit the cap then they shouls, not lock me down to 3g, over pribicple...
