When I send a message in the stock messaging app it leaves the keyboard open. This drives me nuts...Is there a way (in the stock app) to have it kill the keyboard when I hit send?
fwiw, I'm on synergy using swiftkey but it was doing this stock as well.
This drives me nuts as well.
Should ask eschelon if there's something he can do in Synergy in an upcoming release.

I don't see too many poll threads on which sms client you use... I would love if you left a reason you chose the one you do.
I use GO SMS pro because of the simplicity of it and the way the pop up looks. I actually prefer CHOMP sms pop up UI, but it lags and just isn't close to running as smoothly as GO sms Pro.
Also, if you want to post a screen shot of the theme you're using if you're happy with your theme!
Handcent > Go sms. You can text without unlocking screen with handcent. You have to unlock the screen for go sms.
Idk how much I would use that, but I am interested in that. What theme do you use?
Handcent because of being able to reply from the lockscreen without unlocking the phone.
Wow a lot more people use handcent than I realized. What theme do you use?
Stock Sense app, on InsertCoin 2.2. Nice and simple
I use stock. Never liked other apps.

I use Handcent, probably because it offers so many more options over the stock Sense app but probably because of habit also. I don't like pop-ups because of privacy issues and the Handcent seems to work the best for me.
I use GoSMS Pro. I tried Handcent for a while but I found Go to be smoother. They're almost identical in terms of features. However, Go lets you backup your texts for free. Helpful when flashing different ROMs.
i use iphone theme on Handcent with modifications.
I used to use Handcent until it started acting stupid. It worked fine & then all of a sudden started resending texts on every reboot, not sending texts properly(showed a spinning icon next to every message), etc. Now I use GoSms & I love it. All the features of Handcent with none of the bugs. The only thing I miss is the Handcent ringtone picker.
Im using an aosp mms app xboarder ported, working fine for me.
I'm surprised on how many people use stock. It doesn't offer enough features for me. I agree that handcent use to be better, but GO SMS pro has surpassed it in my opinion on the mere fact that it isn't buggy and looks a lot cleaner.
Also, its interesting no one uses Chomp SMS. Especailly if you ever use the iphone theme, chomp sms looks just like it. I loved BITEsms on my jailbroken iphone I used to have.
Used to use Chomp, now go.
just prefer the look of the stock sms app, especially when themed.

Yeah i love GoSMS's built in SMS and settings backup, i used to use only handcent but stopped mainly for that reason.
I hate stock messaging app i try i use it but get sick of it and switch. I hate the lack of customization.
I do wish, however, that text messages would still pop up on the lockscreen when using any other messaging apps

I tried GOSMS first, and saw no reason to leave it. Looks good, has a lot of cool features.

Update 2:T
There is something massively wrong with the dictionary on this keyboard. I am going to uninstall it and try another one. I'll leave this one up as it works, just has a dictionary that's missing basic words.
Update:
Ripped this out of a Sensation (qHD res) AOSP ROM.
Considerations:
Works perfectly
SMS app is not registering as such and therefore you are not getting access to emoticons but it does give you emoticons in G+
Notification is semi-persistent in the bar about selecting input type (no idea why)
To Install
Check install non-market apps in security settings
E-mail attached apk to yourself via gmail
Click install in gmail app
Turn on keyboard via "languages & Keyboard"

Hi,
I really dislike the HTC Sense keyboard. Is it possible to just sideload the ICS keyboard?
There are a few available on the market but i much prefer just to use the raw apk, not someone has reworked.
Thanks!
Debatable I got the ics keyboard from market its nice and a few more options

I decided to give it a try:
I ripped out the keyboard out of this rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494373
e-mailed latinIME.apk to myself on gmail.
Clicked install and it worked perfectly.
Only issues is that I am still not getting the emoticons on the SMS app because the keyboard only shows emoticons in chat/messaging apps not email. The SMS apps seems to not register itself as a SMS/messaging app.
I've attached the keyboard to the first post for all to enjoy.
I'm really sick of the inability to turn off the emoticons in the stock SMS app. Are there any good messaging apps on the market that DON'T pop up the dumb "menu" softkey? That is really annoying.
I've tried Android 4 ICS Messaging but it just seems really buggy, it crashes while using MMS and last time I tried it, it kept duplicating incoming SMS.
Any suggestions?

our first OTA update should fix the menu softkey just like the One S received. do you hate the emoticons because they look extremely goofy? you're not alone there. as soon as we attain root, i'll be throwing in the new ICS Android ones to replace them. not sure why they thought these looked appealing. we just all have to be a little patient.
I don't want to replace them, I want to get rid of them. Hopefully that will be an option

I just updated my HOS (Vodafone) from ICS to Jellybean, and now I no longer see the 'Smileys' option in the Message app menu (for selecting a smiley to insert into the message text). I'm using the Swype keyboard, as I was with ICS.
Anyone know how to get this 'Smileys' menu option back?
They moved the smiles to the default keyboard. Now it's accessible from all apps.

Unless one happens to be one of the thousands using a different keyboard, in which case it's not accessible anywhere...
Thanks for rapid response, anyway.
Keyboard workaround
I found a way to keep the Swype keyboard I like and still have access to the smileys list...
This is probably well known, but since no-one has mentioned it - if more than one keyboard is installed and enabled at the same time, a keyboard icon appears in the notification area that allows you to swap keyboards on-the-fly, and so get access to any features on any keyboard. Not ideal, but as good as it gets.
Is it just my phone or does everyone elses stock keyboard suck. I literally just reset my phone and typing in the google user info on the phone setup was the most painful thing i have ever done in my life. Then when i go and load the JB stock keyboard, the phone freaks out and their is constantly a notification in my status bar asking what input method I want to use. I CLEARLY PICK THE JB KEYBOARD, LEAVE ME ALONE!
Sorry, it just fills me with anger that someone would give the go ahead to release this to the public.
I don't too many people who use stock keyboard, there's a million better options.
Yea the Samsung keyboard lags ridiculously, I use the android 4.2 keyboard. works great, and can fly txting with the swiping actions.
I use PERFECT KEYBOARD. Free in the Play Store. Works flawlessly and looks professional. Of course you'll have to go into settings>language & input>change the default keyboard to Perfect Keyboard.
The lag comes from their predictive text. Go into the settings and and turn it off and you will see ZERO LAG. Or... download another keyboard such as swiftkey (which is AWESOME!!)

Mike is right. SwiftKey is a awesome keyboard. Zero lag and the prediction is great. Probably the best keyboard out there. I paid for the app awhile back and it was well worth it. I used it on my Rezound cause of the keyboard lag and now on my s3. You'll love it.

Yes go with Android as Andy says or as I prefer Swiftkey. The keys are big enough for me to hit. There is new straight beta and Flow beta. Sign up for VIP and they email you all beta APK's.
Thanks for the advice everyone. I ended up loading AOSP 4.2.1 so its not an issue anymore. I had loaded the JB 4.2 keyboard several times and would pick it in the settings menu, but the Touchwiz roms didnt like when i didnt use their keyboard so it would constantly ask if i wanted to use a different keyboard
