good question - on one hand, I would think so, as the difference would be just in the SIM card. but on the other hand, there could some VZW info on the custom ROMs that may not jive with a non-VZW phone.
I'll defer to someone with more experience.
sorry I could not be of any help on this.
The US Cellular Galaxy S Aviator, despite being the same phone, was not compatible with the recovery from this phone, and without that, you're getting nowhere. Back when the Aviator came out, someone was able to get a copy of the stock Odin from the phone, and imnuts used that to build a CWM recovery for it so superuser could be flashed. Something similar could probably be done here, but I wouldn't know where to start.
Having the version from the software might be helpful. I know the Aviator versions are different than the Charge. If the Lightray is the same as either, there is a chance that the recovery is the same as the matching phone, but even that is no guarantee. If you can't get the stock Odin to recover from, you'll probably be risking a brick to find out.

Is the Galaxy S Lightray 4G Metropcs 'unrootable'?
HELP! Is Samsung Galaxy S Lightray 4G 'unrootable'??
I have tried three different techniques, to root the Samsung Galaxy S Lightray 4G Metropcs, all to NO AVAIL!
My first feeble attempt was using SuperOneClick=softbrick ie, stuck on download screen,
Then I tried the basic Odin flash, with stock uckk4 ROM=Odin stuck in 'set up, battery died while waiting, as 'NOT to turn off Target'=softbrick,
and last but by no means least, the Droid Charge technique=hardbrick
HELP!!! I have scoured the net and can find NOTHING that has proven to be successful!
To make matters worse, it's not even my phone! I was trying to help my brother in law, since he and my sis are moving out of state, California, and are going to need to sign with different server once they've passed Texas, I believe, on their way to South Carolina.

You'll need a custom recovery, and as far as I know, there isn't one for the Lightray. I don't think any devs even have the phone, either. The only real chance is to get a stock Odin image and the source to someone who knows how to work with recoveries.
:/

I haven't found one who did, although, I thought maybe (I could be really wrong) that you could cross boot CM 10.1 of another device with similar specs. It could be an option
Anything going on with the Galaxy Lightray?
They just dropped the price to $99, going to get one for my wife since I broke her phone last night. I see a root for it, but no roms.
thanks.

Nope, tried that one before it bricked with ODIN....Trouble is, still no recovery ROM and it's nearing 2 since it's release. Here I STILL sit with a R940 with less then a couple months talk time on it! Phhhffffffffffffttttttttttttt

Captivates don't have any sd card issues, just the bell vibrant. Rogers did say in the first half of 2011 you'll get the update, were just 4 days in though so keep waiting.

Can we flash it back to stock ROM though? I remember there was talk here about the stock ROM and how we can't flash it back to stock or something, but that was a couple months ago... and I've started to lose track of things here.

i believe it was infact the kernel that caused the issues, did you build the kernel from bell sources?
DG pulled perception 9 which was not even i9000m based but i think the kernel he built was. perception 9 was rereleased as 9.5 with a different kernel. there were users on that thread reporting sd card problems but very few, still risky. that said the telus rom didnt cause any problems and neither did the i9000 international so i think the captivate is safe. as the software is ready you guys might even beat att to the punch this time! if you get hsupa enabled this time ill definitely flash a rogers rom.
Ignore this message because of a double posting.

I was able to get mine to stock Rogers ROM but I dont know if its able to get EXACTLY like how rogers has. Mine looks like the rogers one but I think it was made off the AT&T one because it has their logo on the bootup and its not JF6 (mine says JI2 unless thats how it is on a stock Rogers I didnt check before I did flashing), I was able to get rid of the AT&T logo but that still bugs me unless someone can confirm this for me.
Yeah. You can get the Rogers stock files somewhere on the forums and just flash it all using Heimdall. Thats what I did after Odin bricked my phone twice ;D. Also, no Froyo yet. Don't expect it any time soon - this IS Rogers we're dealing with.

It isn't Kies that was the issue. This was happening to people well before the 2.2 update and at random times. My girlfriend's Vibrant has gone twice now. Once just randomly force closing everything and then dying while on 2.1, the second one which came from Samsung with 2.2 on it also did the same thing. She is now waiting for phone #3. Hardware has to be a factor.
speaking of which.. rogers/samsung has started pushing froyo 2.2 lol.. finally.. you'll need a kies update http://www.samsungapps.com/about/onPc.as

Really? That's weird, I've got the latest Kies but "Update Firmware" is still grayed out.
Ok, so I'm not a dev and I don't get most of the terms being thrown around here (although I think I've actually picked up a decent amount). Basically, what I'd like to do with my phone is to root and then upgrade to JB as soon as possible (and to Key Lime Pie as soon as possible once it comes out too). With how the bootloader stuff stands right now, will I be able to do that safely once ROMs start coming out or would I have to wait for Verizon's OTA's?
Which phone would that be, sgs3? The bootloader is encrypted but I believe you can flash roms with stock kernels as its been rooted. But there are several threads explaining the options... Get a gnex!

Yeah I was leaning towards the GNex but if I can get custom roms on an S3 then why not get that (as long as I'm ok with stock kernels)?
Yeh that's what I'm not sure of...especially with this 'developer' sgs3 from Samsung. I have given up on skins from oems who won't give into Verizon's ridiculous demands. I'd be very cautious attempting to flash anything yet as its very new.

Hi Everyone,
I have a at&t Tab2 10.1 3g that i tried to install CM10.1 on. I downloaded the nightly rom for 5100 and flashed it to the tab, then flashed the gapps afterwards. I have CWM recovery on my tab. After the choosing to reboot, the tab never rebooted, just a black screen. I've read that maybe fully charging it with the wall charger will help out, I think I was only at around 20% when I was doing all the updates, not sure if that has anything to do with it either. But while I'm waiting for the tab to charge back up, has anyone have any suggestions if it doesnt power up in the morning for me? I'm pretty sure I did everything correctly since I have a S3 that still works perfectly fine.
Worst case scenario, its either send it in to Samsung to get fixed, or try out the mobiletechvideos guys. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!
BTW, I also tried holding the power by itself and also power + vol- for over 30sec with no luck either.

Why? I mean your model number is SGH-I497, why you came on such a foolish idea to flash a 5100 ROM to your SGH-I497? Thats totaly different Tabs...
....OH and your Tab is Hardbricked.
There is no custom rom for the i497. I have looked. If you can boot to CWM I have the stock rom backed up. I also dumped my rom, but it isn't in a odin file. So you might be SOL unless you can find a dev willing to work with it.

That was in reply to Oditius's comments.
It's a shame, Sorry I can't help, if you can't get into CWM or download mode that is unfortunate. I was going to try the Tmobile rom, but decided to pass. They would be closer than any other. But no LTE service with it... I will just wait till a dev picks up a i497 and creates one.

All good, thanks for a quick response though. Looks like I'm just going to have to shell out the money and send it out to mobiletechvideos to have them do the jtag work on it.
I'm looking to buy a Motorola atrix 2 really cheap. The only thing is the seller says its bootlooping and they don't know how to fix it and they said it happened after cyanogen was put on it. Considering they didn't seem to know what that even was I doubt they know whether its cm7,9, or 10.
That being said I've done some reading about soft bricks, boot loops, fxz, and whatnot on the atrix 2 but being as I've never messed with flashing one of these phones I have no idea if its something I can recover. Im not new to the flashing process but Motorola appears to be a much different animal compared to Samsung phones. Can anyone advise how to go about getting it up and running or whether its even possible in its current state with the limited info I have.

Hey! So I have a Verizon Version of the Straight Talk S3. (SCH-S968C). It is identical to the Verzion version, just no LTE or Wifi Thether capabilities. It also has no sim, etc. I was wanting to test a few roms on it, and I was wondering, how to unlock the bottloader on it without bricking the phone? Any help? Thanks. :silly:

From what I've been reading it seems to be that this is pretty legit, I tried it myself. Although if your on 4.3 ML1 or 4.4.2 NE1 your locked down
If you power off the device, then power it back on, you should see the words "Samsung" first. If they stay on the screen for more than 2 seconds, then it's locked down. If it flashes by almost instantly, then you're unlocked

I not positive about it being locked down with the sch-968c) because that's a verizon boot loader issue and this is a straight talk phone. I've been researching as well and from what I've learned, it can be rooted very quickly using cydia impactor and then flashing cwm recovery for roms and such. The apn settings may need some tweaking. I'm planning to do this to my friends phone this weekend and putting liquid smooth rom on it.

As far as I know any d2lte ROM will work. So far I've tried CM, PA and Pac-Man. All installed fine but they all suffer from the no APN issue which can be bypassed by using 8sms from the play store and changing the APN settings by adding Http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms. Handcent should also work.

I suggest using towelroot. Its much faster and does not require a pc to root your phone.
Yes towel root works great actually the best out of the non pc methods for this device (out of my experience anyway) the phone runs on 4.1.2 and I have no access to a pc so I'm guessing that there's not a very safe or efficient way to install custom roms...
