So, I gotta ask, what's the deal with devs not posting explicit instructions on how to update their own ROMs? Usually if I ask in the thread, somebody just gets pissed and says "Search for it!" I do search for it, but I can never find it. Is it just an assumed task that every ROM upgrades the same way?
Yup. Most of them.

Depends if it's a wipe or non wipe update. The op will say

Why would you think updating from say 4.1 to 4.2 would be different than 4.0 to 4.1?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
You talking about sky ics? Totally different ball game there. Weird.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
Most roms are pretty straight forward & stated clearly in the op...if its skyics thats a totally different .
If its a update:
1.Wipe cache & dalvic
2.flash
3.reboot
New base rom:
1. Factory reset
2. Format system
3. Wipe dalvic
4. reboot
Thats my method & I've never had a problem.

A clean install would always be ideal (even if its an update)

Hey I was just browsing the market and decided to invest in Rom manager (used it religiously on my old Droid 1). Lo and behold we don't even have a cwm listed!
What needs to be done to have some of these roms I see on this board listed in that App?
Thanks and sorry for the noob question. (We need a Q and A board.)

You really should've looked a little as it's mentioned a billion times, BUT...
Just install CWM for the Galaxy S i9000, works perfect.

would have to work with Koush on that one. Don't see why not, we just need to get them separated... (Wouldn't be a bad idea seeing that really noobtastic people may pseudobrick their devices and need us to walk them through Odin restoral....)
I'm always one for lack of headaches. Keeps the real devs from having to field noob questions and pseudo-devs like myself with more free time to try and step up to full dev status....

You would want to check all 3 if it is your first flash, that way if something goes wrong you have a backup to restore, and the other two need to check because they are cache for your original rom, not the new one.
It's worth doing the backup of your stock setup.
Wiping the data isn't necessary unless you are a stickler about starting "fresh".
Dalvik cache wipe never hurts.

If you are coming from stock, you need to wipe all. It can cause issues, i have seen it. You get lots of force close, stuff that is removed from stock would still be there, which could also cause problems. Its better to do a full wipe when going from stock to a custom rom, and when switching custom roms.
I think I made a mistake, it reboot into recovery and I guess I was to wipe data and cache then reboot into cyanogen rom, but I did not wipe data and cache, Now it froze on me. What can I do, Did I just brick my phone?
I started using the cm7 nightly's today & i'm getting different answers on which to wipe between nightly's. Cache AND Dalvick or just one of them? Some ppl are saying u only have to wipe cache, i've seen just Dalvick & i've seen both. I'd asssume both but don't want to go thru an extra step if it's unnecessary. Thanks alot guys

It really depends on what changed in the nightly. It never hurts to wipe both, but it is usually the case that the system is smart enough to just rebuild odexes for the things that have changed therefore, I'd just go with the cache. I rarely wipe anything between CM7 flashes even many builds apart, but I live on the edge.

I've never used ROM manager so I can't say, but that sounds like the way to go.
I've had bad luck w/ Rom Mgr soft-bricking my phone. I prefer CWM.
Ok, thanks alot guys! I just wanted to make sure & yea, rom manager just doesn't feel as comfortable to me as doing it manually where can see what's going on & abort & restore if i can see something not going right. Mainly i just wanted to know if it was ok to download the rom from rom manager & then do it manually from there. Thanks again fellas :')

It's for wiping /system, /data, and /cache. It also converts system back to ext3. It works on Gingerbread also. I don't recommend it. Just manually wipe through CWM Recovery.
Thanks for the info

Is that ALL it does?
Is that really required?
Have people become so lazy that they need this?
Or am I missing something here?
Before I flash a new ROM, I always (manually through clockworkmod recovery) wipe data, system, cache, dalvik.
Or does this do something else?

I "wrote" it. Yes, it is really that simple.
The truth is, of course, nothing is done in a vacuum. I was heavily inspired by BackToExt3 for the 2x by PaulOBrien. Of course, the g2x has some differences so it's not the same script, but basically does the same thing.
Yes there are other ways to do the same things, but once you have the script on your sdcard, it's the fastest way to wipe -- even for experienced users.
However, if your file systems were fully converted to ext4 (not just mounted as), and you want to flash to a bone stock rom without ext4 support, this script takes care of all the steps.
I added my thanks because it saves a lot of button pushing and possible errors when doing a lot of rom testing. It sounds like some others had bugs too which scares me. I'm also grateful for not having to do a lot of additional hunting for more info on proper cleaning for the "safest" flash.
So thanks again.

Yup. Boot into CWM and format cache, data and system partitions. Wioe dalvik cache and then flash darkside. Odin back stock. Flash CWM. Flash darkside again. The flash sky ics. Reboot. TWICE. Then flash faux 010m.
I know it seems long but it'll take 10 min, tops. I can guarantee it'll completely fix your problem

lol I could have told u that. A non working camera indicates an improper flash, or remnants left over from previous roms, NOT a permission problem
I have the same issue, non working stock camera. I have to use a 3rd party app to take pictures. I did a full wipe using the wipe codes reflashed rom with kernel while wiping cache and dalvik and sti have the same issue. Has anyone found a fix to this?

I used one left on my SD from flashing an htc glacier (aka mytouch4g).
Ever since using that script before flashing roms everything has been much more.............umm let me put it this way, I'm seeing much less common sgs4g gremlins popping up.

Roms with my AROMA installer will do all your wipes for you, no questions asked. If you do a quick install, or a customized install without a /data backup you'll have a fresh install on a newly wiped phone.
OK, just wondering because I see a lot of other devices where people tell you to use a wipe script or I've even seen some that ask you to wipe all parts 3x in a row and other crazy stuff.
Maybe its just a placebo then
