OG EVO tutoring needed - EVO Shift 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yo,
So I've been reading various forums trying to figure out what the hell I'm trying to do to this phone.
Everything I come across is like trying to read a different language. First off, what am I supposed to copy and paste with a file manager? Then, how can I cloud store my apps Cos I am running out of space due to use of go launcher ex and its many space Hogger accessories...? and finally do I Have to use a computer to root/unlock my phone so I can have newuser permission? how do I do that????
I get easily confused because I'm very new to trying to experience the awesomeness of hacking my phone....

If you do have an EVO 4G DO NOT USE the Guide you were linked to. What is your HBoot? Android version?

I didn't notice that! Sorry.

Ok if that is your HBoot then you have an OG EVO 4G. So DO NOT USE VICODAN'S GUIDE !!! His guide is for the EVO Shift. Check out the Guide HERE. You can also check THIS thread.

I'm already rooted running CM7 so I wouldn't be able to test this out.
Does anyone know of a reason this wouldn't work ?
I have a stock Inspire headed my way today and one way or another it is going to be rooted within an hour or so of it getting into my mitts !
Is there a SBF for the Inspire so I can reload the original ROM should things go south ?
To perm root this phone, the hboot(bootloader) has to be downgraded to take advantage of an exploitable one to get S-Off(nand lock) so radios and roms can be flashed. Gingerbreak only temp roots and doesn't attain s-off.
Search for the RUU, it's what's needed restore the stock unrooted rom.

Downloading the Stock now, thank you !
Should have searched before asking.
Going to give it a go as I haven't seen anything written about it. Figure as long as I have a stock to get back to it can't do much harm, that and it will wipe the SD card which is handy as it is a used phone. I go through a few and some of the things people leave on their old phones amazes me. Can be amusing though !

HTC Rep: OTA Gingerbread by end of the month

Hey guys, not sure if this is already common knowledge or not, but our HTC rep stopped in today and said that the Inspire 4g was going to be getting Gingerbread OTA in the next couple of weeks. She seemed pretty keen on this stuff as she herself was running a rooted Inspire 4g and complimented my Evo running a Shift port.
Anyways, have fun in Inspire land!
Sweet! I hope she is right.
I hope so too, my fiance has a stock Inspire 4G and I'd love to see that with Gingerbread. The rep seemed pretty up on new tech.
..
The Gingerbread OTA for the EVO that was released today has been rooted all ready....... So I don't see a problem with a locked bootloader.

Was it rooted before it was put on the phone or after the ota update was on the phone. Because its easy to root a rom when its not on the phone, but its hard to s off a phone that has a locked bootloader.

Thats the rooted rom from the update. What worries us is if some one does the ota update and is now stuck with a locked bootloader and no way to s-off. Which could happen on the inspire.

So similar to the way Apple operates? Shouldn't we always have the ability to flash signed roms/ radios like we do now?

Werent we all stuck with locked bootloaders when we bought our phones? And arent we all running rooted with s-off now??
That makes absolutley no difference. If the update comes, and the bootloader is replaced in the process with a signed one(I know they said they wouldn't, I haven't read about the evo update, but usually a locked bootloader is no big deal, a signed one is- if there's people making a big deal about it I'm assuming its signed)
then there's a good possibility you can never really flash a rom/kernel again, unless the bootloader is cracked. If anyone thinks that deb's will always get around this, look at the atrix. Ya it may get cracked eventually, could be years though.

Technically, no.Some devs put FOTA KILL in the roms to disable the service responsible for OTA's so the devices cannot receive them.

It's pretty cool for inspired ace users too, seems like there's people who like there roms as close to stock as possable and as soon as we get an inspire based gingerbread we can use that as a base to build off of, without any problems like tinny audio or speed issues.

yeah i know that is one thread about radios but my many of the radios that are in the desire HD section are not in the inspire 4G sections and that is what i am asking... if those radios that are not in the radio inspire 4g section could be used with my inspire?
Short answer: maybe.
The whole point of the Inspire radio thread was to confirm which of the many possible radios available for the inspire/DHD can be confirmed to work specifically with the Inspire.
Any word on whether or not the new radio 12.59.60.26U_26.11.04.21_M for the DHD works on the inspire yet? The radio thread hasnt been updated yet.
EDIT: Nevermind, the thread has been updated now and the radio works flawlessly.
I have yet to see a problem with any DHD radio on my Inspire4g. It's android man. As long as you are flashing it the safe way with a zip file through HBOOT and not engie s-off through fastboot there really isn't much that can go wrong. Try it, see if it works for you, if it doesn't then flash something else.

This is not correct, things can still go wrong even when flashing the safe way. That is why none of the developers or modders will claim responsibility if the end user breaks something.
I believe I said "there isn't much that can go wrong" not "IT'S TOTALLY SAFE!"
I would consider a bricked phone more than "a little going wrong". It is a possibility, and it shouldn't be downplayed or taken lightly.
How can I determine the version of radio that is currently installed? I tried the HBOOT method with the Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2.zip file and I am not sure it worked, because my Inspire 4G seems to just be an Inspire now... I don't get 4G connects any more.

If you installed a custom ROM that is not based on the inspire you will not see the H+ anymore. Does not mean you are not getting the same connection.
To see your radio version just go to settings > about phone > software information and it is listed in the Baseband version.

If you are waiting for a solution which does not require the use of a computer, you will likely never see one. I would guess that even the "official" unlock coming from HTC will still be done via a computer.

Any info on this ? did HTC announce some rooting patch coming up ?
I s-off and rooted my HTC Aria (2.2.2 hboot 1.02) using revolution (straight foward), but from what I read here so far doign the same on ym wife Inspire 4G would require a rom wipe out loosing all my data (still on 2.2.1 but hopeing to get GB soon when ATT pushes it as again installing of HTC site warn about erasing personal data), which I don't want to do... don't know how to back it all up before (only contacts are saved to Outlook on PC).

Jump onto #liberatedAria IRC channel tomorrow and I bet ATTN1 will let you test his new hack kit that won't mess up your data ("hack kit lite"). I've run it myself and it's pretty slick. I think it's only for linux at present.

I did but unfortunately the script left my wife's Inspire unsuable - wouldn't boot up even in recovery mode! that was an Inspire with 2.3.3 (OTA update from ATT from the stock 2.2.1) HBOOT 0.85.0024 S-ON, on win7.
First time I ran it, it partially worked and installed CW 4.0.x for recovery so I was able to do a full backup but no root and no S-OFF, but ran normally otherwise (with all info intact)... second time I ran it again (to get s-off), it failed after unloading a new radio and from there on would not boot/recovery at all - black screen after logo. I freaked out. Must have been a bad day for attn1 as he kicked me out of the chat room twice (loosing all usefull info in the chat above ) even when I first came in before I started.
Eventually I was able to restore it back to HTC official 2.3.3 RUU .exe using the fastboot mode, and restore most of my info back. I couldn't get 2.2.1 RUU to install (got from somewhere here) as I was trying to see if maybe the hack only worked with that previous rev.
Guess I'll be waiting for the official release and the bugs to be worked out for Windows...
So there is no way to do this on a PPC Mac? And why doesn't it work on a PPC Mac?

You need an upgrade in the pc area.
The old power macs are just too outdated. Writing software for an old closed system like yours would be pointless and a waste of time. Even though you run osx I'm pretty sure its a special flavor of osx, because they where using 64 bit IBM processors at the time.

[SOLVED] Cannot for the life of me flash hboot on 2.2

i have an htc evo shift 4g that originally had 2.3.4 on it. i successfully (i think) downgraded the system to 2.2. but every single time i try to flash the hboot_eng.nb0 to gain S-off the md5sum comes back different than its supposed to be. funny thing is, its perm-rooted somehow. i decided to go ahead and reboot anyway and attempt perm-root and it stuck. no brick, no errors, no nothing. its fine. but as far as i have read i need to have S-off to be able to flash custom roms.
am i correct in this assumption?
before anyone tries to point me to an hboot flashing tutorial, be aware i have looked at ABSOLUTELY EVERY SINGLE ONE AND FOLLOWED DIRECTIONS TO A T!!!!!
any help would be absolutely appreciated
EDIT: SOLVED
ok so after thinking i did everything right (which i sorta did) i glanced through all the tutorials again and found the answer.
CREDIT GOES TO gzetski and unbrkshft AT ANDROIDFORUMS.COM
All I had to do was re-install 2.2 per gzetski's instructions. Then I followed the rooting instructions at the top of this post as if I was running 2.3.4. It was flawless. I was able to downgrade the hboot and S-OFF. The phone is now running CM7 and the owner is quite pleased.

You don't have to be S-Off to flash custom ROMs... but it sure makes it easier. Go into bootloader and let us know exactly what it says at the top, there should be about 4 lines.
Re: [Q] Cannot for the life of me flash hboot on 2.2
Yup, if you're s-on you can flash roms but you have to flash the kernel seperately, which means you have to carry around a computer with you whenever you go on a flashing spree
