I'm already rooted running CM7 so I wouldn't be able to test this out.

Does anyone know of a reason this wouldn't work ?
I have a stock Inspire headed my way today and one way or another it is going to be rooted within an hour or so of it getting into my mitts !
Is there a SBF for the Inspire so I can reload the original ROM should things go south ?

To perm root this phone, the hboot(bootloader) has to be downgraded to take advantage of an exploitable one to get S-Off(nand lock) so radios and roms can be flashed. Gingerbreak only temp roots and doesn't attain s-off.
Search for the RUU, it's what's needed restore the stock unrooted rom.

Downloading the Stock now, thank you !
Should have searched before asking.
Going to give it a go as I haven't seen anything written about it. Figure as long as I have a stock to get back to it can't do much harm, that and it will wipe the SD card which is handy as it is a used phone. I go through a few and some of the things people leave on their old phones amazes me. Can be amusing though !

You're right in saying that the only way to root on DSS is currently XTCclip.
But as for ROMs the only ones you'd be able to instal (except official ones) are the customs that you'll find in the android development section of this forum (although I don't believe that any are available through ROM manager).
there are four or five different cooks.....to choose from, but the number has doubled in the last week alone so things are certainly looking up.

would i be correct in saying that once i s-off'd my phone and then rooted it, i would be able to uninstall the apps installed by my telco?
i'm not opposed to using the rom installed by my telco, it seems fast enough. i only want to uninstall their stupid bloody apps (which aren't actually apps, but rather links to their website).
Yes, you are right

Can you root using Gingerbreak ? Cuz i read that you need to flash an unsecured boot.img to make SuperOneClick work. What's the difference?
excellent.
i might look into buying myself an xtc clip.
unless a software method comes up soon.

yeah, i'll probably have a look around but they're not that expensive.
i could probably then re-sell it and make my money back.
@shrome
Yes u can use Gingerbreak. That's how I rooted mine since superoneclick wouldn't work. You'll get an error message which u can ignore and then just reboot. Greetz
Edit: device still needs to be s-off to do so...

Yeah, i know about the S-OFF part, I'l wait for 2-3 weeks, then use the XTC Clip. If gingerbreak is usable, why is there so much fuss about superoneclick?? There must be some cons......do you know any? Anyway, thanks !!!
Edit: i read somewhere that gingerbreak wipes the data on ur SD card. Is that true?

I used gingerbreak 1.2 to root after getting s-off and it has done nothing at all to damage my sd-card
It made the card un-mountable when you tried to temp root with out s-off, but that was easy fixed with a battery out reboot

Did you format your SD card or did it have data? Cuz the gingerbreak page says it's better to have a formatted one, but i don't wanna format, cuz there's a lot of data on it.

copy the data from the card to your computer first.
then after you've run gingerbreak, copy the data back.
or, go buy another sdcard. they're very cheap.
Please forgive me as I am definitely a complete newbie here. I am trying to root my DS so that I can hopefully run a Bluetooth RSAP app to link my car phone system. I have sent the phone away and had it made S-OFF and I have tried to download Gingerbreak from downloads it says "cannot open file" what am I doing wrong.

I've been thinking the same, also the gold card that the xtc clip makes worked in my old desire to flash ruu's that I couldn't previously flash no matter how many times I tried to make one,so maybe a copy of the card would work for all HTC's?

Few questions about rooting

Hi...
I want to delete some apps like stocks...and i know i need to be rooted for it...
But when i trien temp-root with free3vo...deleted some apps and they were never deleted...
I dont want to perma root cz i think then i wont be able to get updates from htc...
I dont want anything more then rooting cz i love sense and thats why i actually bought sensation...
But now my phone is getting slower and i think deleting stock apps will solve it...
Is there anything just like one click root or i have to wait for unlock bootloader...
And i dont even have drivers for my sensation on my pc...so if someone can provide it...ill so thankful...its not downloading from htc site.
Thanks..
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA Premium App
Temp root with fr3vo will not let you permanently delete apps. They will just return upon reboot because they weren't really deleted in the first place. Trust me when I say that htc is not rushing to get updates out to us. Or any of their phones for that matter. People are on their Facebook page everyday pleading for updates. Devs are way more eager so your best bet would be to flash a custom rom because then you are guaranteed an update to the newest android. You can't root without unlocking your bootloader. You can do this at revolutionary.io. The instructions are at the top of the development thread. Along with the drivers. Just because you root doesn't mean that you can't have sense. We actually don't have a real "no-sense" aosp rom yet. Go ahead. Free your phone from htc's grip. Then you can delete at your heart's will.
Okk...so you mean i would have to s-off i think...and which is the best custom rom according to you with sense...and can i revert back to stock rom if i want??
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA Premium App
Yes s-off is the best option. The best you can do is do some research. Read the 1st post of the rom's thread and find out which suits you best.
Thanks...
But will i be able to revert back to original??

Once you have cwm you can backup your original rom. If for some reason you want back to original rom, you can restore it with cwm.
Thanks...but as i am a nood...
I tried s-off with revolutionary but it showed me sofe error communication with phone is intrrepted unepectdly try again later...so i couldnt s-off n cant even find some help on it..
So i thought the other way...first flashing the 1.45 on my phone then getting bootloader unlocked with the htcdev...
So guys can you plz guide me to most easiest and simplest guide to flash it...

New to Android here. Does CWM backup the original ROM in it's "pure" state, i.e. factory fresh? Or does it backup the ROM based on your phone's current state.
I'm coming from an iPhone, where the iOS files were easily accessible and I never made back-ups. I have so many questions about Android modding. This forum is filled with information, but has my head spinning.

Try reading the stickies on top of the development boards. Following directions also helps. I was able to s-off in one click, I don't see why you're having so much trouble.

I would surmise that its a backup of the phones current state. I was still s-offed after I restored my phone to my stock backup after a botched adb push.
Take it a day at a time, took me about a week to get up to speed on this thing. Learning how to use adb and knowing a few basic commands will make your life easier.

It is indeed a backup of the current state. You will be s-off as long as you don't take an update or change your bootloader. Your bootloader is not included in a backup as it is not necessary.

Rooted no system update?

So I have a rooted sensation...no ROM. HOWEVER I just got a system update pushed to my phone from HTC and everytime it starts to install it freezes with the little green guy and a exclamation point in a triangle. You can still get haptic feedback on the touch keys but the only way to clear the screen is to remove the battery. Any advice?

Could also be a failed signature check. I know around this time last year (maybe November) the Desire got an update like this, however if you were rooted it would not pass the signature check for some reason. Also if you were unbranded on an originally branded device and NOT rooted it would also cause this problem. I remember being able to fix the problem, I just can't remember how
It won't install until you go back to stock recovery. There is a thread somewhere in the sensation forums that tells you how. You will have to search though cause I can't remember where but I remember reading it.

Did either of you figure out the fix, or did you give up? I'm in the same position and would like to know how to do this. Please provide any links that you can. Thanks.
from what i read you have to flash stock recovery the instructions for this can be found in android development
I solved ny fully flashing a stock rom
I had same issue , so I used an rru that I have from the stock rru thread in android develpment, and then I can accept the over the air updates and have it to work, but it is very annoying way to go.
The problem that the HTC official updates need the htc own recovery and not the one we burn to have the abilty to install su and root.
So after u install a stock rom and have it updated u will have to root probably at least to clear the battery stats,,, this will make u loose abilty to accept updates again ??!!
I wish if someone can tell us an easier solution

[Q] Goldcards?

I have seen this work on older phones like the original myTouch 3g and the 3g Slide, so i was just wondering if this was possible to achieve at least root (no S-off) and if so would there be a way to get S-off?

No, we don't.
Some people do, but anyone who has the latest OTA can't gain root (at least until HTC fixes their unlocker tool).
I remember making a gold card 2 years ago for the original Mytouch for a friend. Using a hex editor. What does that actually do though?
I dont have S-Off cuz i was dumb and did the OTA before i rooted. I was just asking to add possibilities out there. Would it really be possible though, it be pretty nice if we got at least custom recover from it.

If your S-Off there's methods to get Clockwork back on.
HTC is going to FIX (Yes Fix) the OTA Update to allow S-Off, and Root. I called T-Mo, and HTC. My Uncle wanted his Doubleshot Rooted, but couldn't because he (Stupidly) updated.

[SOLVED] Cannot for the life of me flash hboot on 2.2

i have an htc evo shift 4g that originally had 2.3.4 on it. i successfully (i think) downgraded the system to 2.2. but every single time i try to flash the hboot_eng.nb0 to gain S-off the md5sum comes back different than its supposed to be. funny thing is, its perm-rooted somehow. i decided to go ahead and reboot anyway and attempt perm-root and it stuck. no brick, no errors, no nothing. its fine. but as far as i have read i need to have S-off to be able to flash custom roms.
am i correct in this assumption?
before anyone tries to point me to an hboot flashing tutorial, be aware i have looked at ABSOLUTELY EVERY SINGLE ONE AND FOLLOWED DIRECTIONS TO A T!!!!!
any help would be absolutely appreciated
EDIT: SOLVED
ok so after thinking i did everything right (which i sorta did) i glanced through all the tutorials again and found the answer.
CREDIT GOES TO gzetski and unbrkshft AT ANDROIDFORUMS.COM
All I had to do was re-install 2.2 per gzetski's instructions. Then I followed the rooting instructions at the top of this post as if I was running 2.3.4. It was flawless. I was able to downgrade the hboot and S-OFF. The phone is now running CM7 and the owner is quite pleased.

so basically read the instructions found HERE but follow the instructions for 2.3.4
now im happily running JellyBelly CM10 :highfive:

You don't have to be S-Off to flash custom ROMs... but it sure makes it easier. Go into bootloader and let us know exactly what it says at the top, there should be about 4 lines.
Re: [Q] Cannot for the life of me flash hboot on 2.2
Yup, if you're s-on you can flash roms but you have to flash the kernel seperately, which means you have to carry around a computer with you whenever you go on a flashing spree

I have bought several apps through the play store just to help support development. The more time I put into learning and moding the more I appreciate the time, effort, and knowledge of the people who put these things together.
