Defective Tablets from Amazon? - Asus Transformer TF700

Hi all,
The Infinity is my first tablet and I was thrilled when I was finally able to order one and it shipped out. The first night I had it I noticed that it had arrived with a couple scratches on the side and there was unpainted surface showing. I emailed Amazon about this and they offered to either refund 20% of my purchase or replace the tablet. While still deciding which road to take, I noticed that my screen was separating from the metal body at the bottom of the tablet (near the dock connector). I returned it and received a new one promptly.
Unfortunately my new one is also defective. When you hold the screen in landscape the right side of the screen is loose and makes a clicking sound when you grab onto it (actually more annoying than what was wrong with the first tablet). Amazon suggested to check with ASUS. ASUS only offered to have me send it in to be serviced (not replaced) and that I would have to pay shipping.
Do I now return this tablet to Amazon again and hope that I finally get a well constructed tablet? Are ASUS tablets always this hit or miss in terms of their quality?

Clicking by the speaker is "normal". Mine doesn't click but feels slightly separated there. No other problems at all with mine. Got it at B&H.

It's just frustrating that this one is clicking at the speaker when the first tablet had other problems but no clicking (I still have them both in my possession so I checked to make sure I hadn't just accidentally not noticed it)

It's a somewhat weaker spot on the backside that many units suffer from (I haven't spotted it so far on mine). As fr as the reports go, it does not impact norml usage, so I guess it is okay. (Nonetheless, on a tablet priced as the TF700 is, I should expect the esign to be thought through a little better.)

My initial tablet had a very small amount of screen give near the speaker. But this loud audible clicking seems a bit much to tolerate. While I can still use the tablet normally, it sure is annoying to hear it click every time I move my hand.
I've uploaded a video to show the clicking:

That sucks. Sorry. Mine seems to be OK except for a touch of light bleeding which I may just fix myself once some teardown videos show up.

That's really aweful. I'd return it for sure. I'm getting mine from BestBuy on Monday...I hope I don't have any such issues.

Mine clicks too. I find it more of a feature though because it gives me a strange sort of satisfaction to constantly press it. Maybe it's just me.

Like popping bubble packing... it's addictive!

I ordered my amethyst one from Amazon. Structurally, the tablet is very sound. No separation or weaknesses.
But I do have some notable backlight bleed that you can see in the backlight bleed thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29335840&postcount=7
I am also experiencing two audio problems: electronic squealing from the headphone jack when watching movies with BS Player and MX player. It is a moderately loud continuous "beeep.......beep.....beeeeeep....beeeeep....beeep.....beep" that is audible at normal volumes and when the volume is muted. Wear headphones, watch an mkv video file, and let me know if you hear this. I also have serious bluetooth audio lag. If I use a bluetooth headset instead of stereo headphones, I don't hear any squealing, but the sound is at least 1-2 seconds behind the video.
As a comparison, neither my Galaxy Tab 10.1 or my Galaxy Nexus have any of these issues. No backlight bleed, squealing, or bluetooth lag. I can live with the backlight bleed on the Infinity if the two audio issues can be fixed. Otherwise, I will need to return this unit. Almost everything else about this tablet is stellar, so I would hate to return it.

Update
Received tablet number three today from Amazon. This one makes the clicking sound of tablet 2 and has the loose screen of tablet 1. Not sure what to do now.
Do I give up on the Infinity and go to the Nexus 7?

My Nexus 7 had a bad display and died within an hour of unboxing. Just ordered my TF700. Fingers crossed.

Wow that clicking is serious and that gap is definitely a defect. I'm starting to think I should have kept the first Infinity I had I had only minimal movement from the screen and no click. Hope the second doesn't have any issues. That click is serious lol.

I got mine from Amazon the day after release. No problems that I can tell. Mine probably came from the Phoenix warehouse.

Not sure if the warehouses matter but these are mine:
Tablet 1 (loose screen near left dock connector): Fernley, NV
Tablet 2 (the clicking sound shown in the Youtube video): Whitestown, IN
Tablet 3 (slightly less egregious clicking, AND screen loose near dock connector): Breinigsville, PA
Tablet 4 (?): Shipping soon and arriving tomorrow (I guess when you have 3 defective products they pay extra for Saturday delivery)

I'm feeling the same way. My first tablet with the loose screen (but no clicking) and the scratches it arrived with is starting to look pretty attractive.

canceled my order from amazon

Bought mine from amazon.de, which had screen separation and a dead love of pixels after a day, told them and they sent a new one a hour later. I currently have 2 until they send me packaging for the old one haha XD but the new one is perfect condition.very impressed with the service, but less so with the fact they are even sending out dodgy units. Our of interest what serial batch are yours, mine are both c7.

Just received my transformer yesterday from newegg

Only been using it for a few hours, but absolutely no light bleed with a black background at 100% brightness. Speakers are normal too. They may have fixed some of the issues thus far, or maybe I just got lucky. Youtube app ran kind of choppy for me, but the website itself was much better. Loving it thus far. No creaking to speak of either. Will update with any issues if they arise.
Sounds encouraging. Hope Asus fixed most of the issues, in their subsequent production batches. I ordered yesterday night through Newegg too.
BTW, when did you place the order with Newegg ?
I just got mine yesterday from best buy. Has tons of backlight bleed on the bottom and a weird very faint light spot somewhere in the middle, and that's at the lowest brightness setting. It has no creaking, but i'm considering returning it to best buy to get the iconia instead. This amount of backlight bleed is nuts, far worse than my nook color.
I ordered last week on Friday night I believe. Used 2 day shipping by UPS.

I honestly don't think it matters when the TF was ordered. I have no creaking and almost zero light bleed and I received mine 2 days after the release date. It seems like the issues are just "luck of the draw" and not related to the batches.

I agree! No creaking and only a very small light bleed issue on 100% brightness. Not enough for me to RMA it. Overall happy with it
I got mine yesturday from best buy. No creaking or audio problems. I do have one small area of light bleed that doesnt really bother me. overall i am very happy with this device.
Still going extremely well with the transformer. I think some of the choppiness with streaming video originally was with my router. (Don't buy belkin routers, they're garbage) I was also having choppy video on my iMac yesterday. Went to best buy and picked up an airport extreme. Tablet is flying now on the browser and youtube. The browsing experience is so much more complete compared to my iPad. Haven't had any force closes on the recommended tablet apps, and just 1-2 on my phone apps. Screen quality continues to impress me. Touch screen has been responsive with no lag. Still no light bleed and speakers still good. Plugged in my audio technica headphones, and was blown away. Sound quality is fantastic. Going to transfer some video to the TF and see how it handles it next. Wonder if I could stream netflix using asus's my desktop app or wyse pocket cloud (I think that's what it's called) from my desktop. So far very impressed and happy with my purchase. Cant find a respectable case for this thing though.
I've been contemplating keeping mine. I mean, it's a cool device, but I'm struggling to see the use of it considering I have a cell phone and a laptop. What do you guys use your Transformer for?

Should I exchange?

Got my Infinity 2 days ago and just noticed a dark blemish in the side of the tablet. It can't be from my palms because I've only used it briefly. Looks like the grey finish is wearing off or the spot was missed when it was sprayed with paint. Other than that, build is excellent. No loose screen, no cracking sound, no dead pixels and minimal light bleed. I don't know if this will progressively get worse with time. Would you guys exchange it or just live with it?

Yea, that's my take as well. Every tablet i got from them had qc issues.

Just got mine from Amazon today, it has 1 dead pixel, or maybe a tiny speck of dust. It it worth returning for just 1 dead one? Are dead pixels something that can multiply and get worse down the road?
Depending on the cause of the dead pixel, they tend not to spread. Even one would annoy me though. Most TV companies won't take it back over 1 pixel. I have an LCD TV that they wouldn't return because "it's not enough" lol. Is yours in an annoying spot?
It's not in too bad of a spot, towards the upper right corner. I did read through the SquareTrade warranty (haven't bought that yet) and theirs specifies at least 3 dead pixels for return, so maybe that's kind of a standard...
I did just find this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnDXpCXPjZ0 so I'll try that "fix" tomorrow
OP apply some CLR to that blemish and you should be good to go.
Honestly, if this is the only problem with your tablet, I wouldn't return it. Seriously, lots of people have reported issues with screen sensitivity, clicking noises on the corner or over the speaker when they press on the glass, issues with the docking station and so on. If all you have is a blemish, live with it. It's on the side of the tablet anyway, it's not going to be seen while you're using it and it most certainly is not causing performance issues. Plus, what if you exchange it and get a unit with one or more of the above problems but no blemish? Is it worth the risk?

IMO, at $500 even 1 dead pixel is too many. And, as far as TVs, one pixel won't be seen from a typical viewing distance. A tab, OTOH, is only a couple feet from your eyes...

How many times have you exchanged your Infinity?

Topic.
1: Volume rocker did not work properly.
2: Many scratches on the backplate.
3: loose screen causing clicking noise.
Twice.
#1 - Wifi died after a week.
#2 - Screen was completely detached on one side out of the box.
Almost returned my third since it looked like the spring was missing from my SD card slot (that is, the card went in with no resistance and wouldn't push in to pop out)... but on a whim I decided to try it again right before I finished boxing it back up and it started working.
Its a great tablet, but Asus really needs to improve their quality control.

Returned mine no times...
Thought about it-didn't do it.

did not return my tablet, was flawless unit
Did the Infinity even come with plastic covers for the keyboard dock connections and the charging port like the TF201 model? The Infinity I saw, brand new right out of the box there were no plastic protective covers at all.

All three of mine had the cover on the dock connector itself, but not the two slots where it connected to the dock.
Edit: Sigh... Now I"m considering returning mine for the third time. When I got it, I noticed the screen could be pushed in a little along the bottom, like it wasnt completely attached but I figured it'd be ok since it was just one spot. Now its doing it along the top. My local best buy has them in-store now so I could exchange it no problems, but I've been holding off during my return period before unlocking and I dont want to push that back again...
I heard you can get banned for 90 days from Best Buy if you return too much... They scan your driver's license to keep a log of your returns. Not sure if it applies to defective tablets but they will probably assume that you're doing the damage one day. Anyways, time to exchange it.
Zero. Slight clicking sound. GPS is a bit slow. Nothing else.
4: Loose screen, clicking noise
5: Loose screen, clicking noise
6: Loose screen, clicking noise
7: 5 pieces of dust under screen.
This is outrageous.
Vibrating Motor didn't work at all.
This one is perfect. Everything works great. No creeking of the screen, no light bleed no problems what so ever. For now.
4 times....... 1- had dust under screen, 2- dead pixels, 3-dust under screen 4-dead pixels again, and the one I currently have seems like a keeper, I am used to it already as I had to do the same for the Prime and tf300 at least twice, but once I got a good one it held up good, Im very satisfied with the one I currently have. the infinity is clearly a beast!
8: dusts under screen
Finally got a good one on my ninth... everything is good except for the minor lightbleed but IDC I have found THE ONE!

I live between two BB stores that are under 3 miles away.
I work in the city where two BB stores are less than 1 mile away so I can walk.
I also open the box in the store after exchanging and check for problems. If I do, I exchange it again. Started this after my fourth exchange cause I was getting annoyed driving back and forth.
wow. I feel lucky. I got mine first week available in North America and have NO issues. no dust, no light bleed. Been working great. No complaints, except with Chome being a big laggy.
Zero.
Original TF101 - 7 TIMES. Yup..dead pixels, blemishes on screen, dead WIFI, crappy QA until I got a good one.
TF201 - Twice. Dead pixels, dead GPS. End of romance.
TF700 - Returned once. Original one had cosmetic imperfections (large dark stain/spot on the side), loose screen and clicking on left side of screen. Picked up another one, PERFECTION. No dead pixels, no clicking, no cosmetic damage.
Zero. No problems in 3 weeks.

Really This is shocking to hear. I bought mine online from america, because I couldnt buy the cheaper speced version here. But mine is perfect thank god. I do actually have a very slight clicky sound in one of the corners. But I'll live with that. I don't really know what I could do if this craps out on me.
Asus really need to work on their QC...
No returns on my infinity yet, I have had mine for almost 30 days (have 60days for BB returns). Have a 2yr ADH from square trade just incase. Looks like this infinity is a keeper.
My primes on the other hand was just a QC problems after QC problems... very dissapointed with the prime.

What physical defects should I check before buying the Infinity?

Hi guys,
I am planning to buy the Infinity next week, but based on what I have read on xda so far, there seems to be a lot of problems with the Infinity that users need to check before making the purchase, namely light bleed, dead pixels, lagging sound on bluetooth headsets, etc... Since I am trying my best to avoid all the hassle of exchanging the tablet for another unit (because of defects), I would really appreciate if someone can tell me what I should check before bringing the Infinity home from the shop. This is going to be my first tablet, so I am not quite sure what to expect.
Many thanks!
Clicking screen and you got them all I think.
Scratches, darker spots on the aluminum.
How are you gonna check for physical defects before you buy it?
How are you going to check for ANY defects before you buy one... What are you talking about.

Well...if you don't have the tablet in hand how would you know if the tablet you don't have has any physical defect?
If one buys the tablet, takes it out of the box then looks at it then I can see checking for physical defects.

Yes I see that after re-reading the OP's actual question.
A lot of stores won't let a buyer unbox before buying...not all, but most.

Check aluminum for scratches.
Squeeze around edge of screen and listen for creeks and squeaks.
Watch boot up for light bleed.
Test for GPS lock on Google maps.

I guess I should be clearer, but my point is to check for defects right after I take the tablet out of the box, so that if there is anything wrong, I can ask the shop to give me another unit straight away.
Anyway, thanks guys for giving me useful information. Hopefully I can get a flawless tablet next week.
Got mine yesterday. Here's what I checked for:
Loose screen (press lightly on the 4 corners)
Light bleed
Scratches on the screen, back and keyboard dock
Dust under the screen
Haptic feedback
Volume and power buttons
MicroSD
Headphone jack
HDMI
Keyboard dock
Got a flawless tablet. Extremely happy. Good luck with your purchase.

I've exchanged my tablet about 6 times now. Going to be the 7th soon after I get off work. 5 pieces of dust under the screen...

[Q] The screen is a bit detached on my TF700. Should I exchange it?

I got it a few days ago. Love the screen and device overall, but Asus really needs to improve its QC (the Nexus 7 has similar issues, and my Asus laptop has some issues as well).
Anyway, I have some light bleeding in the lower left corner, but also on the left side where the screen is detached. Detached in a way that I can push it, it makes a sort of "click" sound, and the light bleeding is worse when I press it.
Do you think I should return it and get another one? I would, but the nearest bestbuy is an hour away AND I keep seeing people in the threads saying that their second one was even worse, etc. I guess it's just luck.
Yes

Yes, yes you should return if possible.
I would travel 2 hours if I were not completely satisfied.
My suggestion would be to check out the replacement device *before* you leave the store - with the number of defective TF700's being sold, you don't want to have to drive all of that way only to find another issue when you get home with your replacement! Don't leave the store until you get a good one.
It's a shame, but Asus' QC is just horrible... When you get a good one, you'll be happy though!
