Guys,i need SERIOUS help! PLEASE! - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

first off, im not sure if im putting this in the right forum section, forgive me if im not also this is long, but please read on.
anyway heres whats up.
Recently the Nexus S line started receiving their 4.1 update. I have a Nexus S 4G (so obviously Sprint). Angry - again- that the 4G model did not get the update (or will be anytime soon) i rooted my phone again after some time.
after some random issues with it (apps would crash constantly) i attempted to switch to CM10. that didnt work. so i went to CM9 and then CM10. everything was fine until the phone would reboot on its own from time to time and every now and then i would pull the battery. After some time the issues stopped.
NOW, the other night my phone died. this morning i decided to charge it. after charging for about 20 minutes i attempted to turn it on, but i ended up getting stuck at the bootlogo (Google with the unlock) i pulled the battery, and tried again. Same thing. I proceeded to go into recovery and flash a ROM that i knew was safe to boot into, except, the SD card would not mount- saying there was an error. Thats where im at now. the SD will not mount, and im stuck at the bootlogo. I believe i "bricked" my phone.
heres what i need help with. I locked the bootloader with Fastboot, but i still have CWM on the phone. i cant delete CWM without getting into the SD card, but the SD card refuses to mount. I want to get CWM off, so that i can send the phone in for repair/a new one. my warranty - although void now - still has a 5 months left on it. Im not worried about switching the ROM because the phone wont boot anyways, which means that when i give in, they wont be able to do anything besides see that its not rooted.
TL;DR
i think i bricked my phone, but i still have hope for it. SD wont mount, and im stuck at bootloader. i need a way to either fix this, or delete CWM somehow. Im on a Nexus S 4G.
PLEASE! Any suggestions are appreciated!

Do u have a backup showing when u go to backups?
Or is it SD card not mountable at all?
Next can u mount via USB?
If so copy ur SD to then format it.
Do u have a backup of ur SD card on ur computer b4 this happened?
If so then try to format SD card then put ur backup in it and then flash a backup or new ROM.
Vs Nexus S 4G

if you have fastboot then you can flash factory images... read this guide a couple times before trying it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1572307
but you need a ns4g image from here

no backups at all, but even if i did, the backups would be stored on my SD card, which i cant access. when i go into CWM and go to install zip from SD card, it says "error mounting SD card"

ill check that out. another issue im having is that i think i found a way to fix this, but i can only fix it if my bootloader is unlocked, which, in attempt to mask my errors, i locked, and now i cannot unlock it. when i press "yes, unlock my bootloader" the phone freezes up. i need some way to unlock my bootloader OR enable USB debugging from my computer. thing is, while i DO have all the drivers for my phone, the computer will not recognise the phone. It makes a sound when i plug in the phone, to show something IS plugged in, but it does not show up in my drives.

Is the phone locked by a provider?
CWM works? Format all - data & system & cache & SD CARD.
Then use ODIN to flash a proper stock firmware, unlock & root your phone one again.
A lot of work but necessary...:fingers-crossed:

heres the catch about CWM, i can format all my data and system and wipe the cache. When i format the system, that also formats the SD.BUT under the advanced options in CWM, i cant format ONLY the SD. it gives me a mounting error. And i believe i found a solution through linux, but i need the bootloader unlocked, which i locked up again. Everyone says odin is the way to go but i cant get it on because the SD is unmountable.
is there some sort of adapter i can plug into the USB port at the bottom of the phone that lets me attach an external SD? i believe if i can attach an external SD card which contains the things i need such as a stable ROM, then i can get the phone working. i came across a website which repairs bricked phones. In a video of a Nexus S brick repair, the tech guy installed some files through a "jig"(?) do you think if i can get my hands on one of those i can fix my phone?

HELP: is my Magic bricked?

I was running a hero ROM on my device, and wanted to try an Eclair ROM. I wanted to flash it but in the process I saw something like: E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command on the screen. I went ahead and performed a wipe because I read it was harmless. But then the installation was aborted because the file update.zip couldn't be found (even though it was on my phone). So I went ahead and rebooted my device. Now it always gets stuck at the little green android, then he disappears and I get a black screen. The device remains on however and I need to pull out the battery for it to turn off... COULD ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME
After doing all you did your device should boot normally. Obviously it didn't. I don't know what went wrong, but if you boot into recovery you should be able to flash a ROM.
Just make sure you have the right recovery and right ROM files.
I only have that Eclair rom on my device (which can't be flashed).
My PC won't read the SD card anymore so I can't put any rom on it...

Your not bricked... you basically just failed the update process then wiped your current installed rom with the Wipe. Now you rebooted the phone but there's no rom to load. You now see only the boot starting up and hitting the wall with no rom to load.
That makes sense.. How can I fix this issue?
thank you
Would help if you could give us some info on your phone.
Can you enter recovery or fastboot again ?
phone model, spl & radio version ?
this is why Iphones were invented.... For people who cant understand simple directions or even read for that matter.
What recovery do you have? Get another rom, go into recovery, hit the USB toggle switch and put anothe rrom on. It doesnt have to be named update.zip...
Nevermind.. Doesnt matter what I type here you'll go an do what you want anyway.
I have the htc Magic
How do I get to see my radio and spl?
Yes, I can enter recovery mode.
thank you
I can enter fastboot!
RADIO: 3.22.20.17
SPL 1.33.2005
btw it's a 32A
Where is this USB toggle switch??
Android system recovery utility
Use trackball to highlight:
click to select.
reboot system now [Home+Back]
apply sdcard:update.zip [Alt+S]
wipe data/factory reset [Alt+W]
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command
That's all I see.
Only the latest recovery has the Usb option in it.

+1 to that.
You wipe your phone, couldn't boot it and you did not know the reason for this. You wiped your ROM, there's nothing to load up when you boot it. It's so simple.

Wow, just wow. If you need spoonfeed after spoonfeed, How in the world did you root your phone in the first place? You run into problems at EVERY step. Honestly, get the iphone (It's not that badddddd of a phone! Just agreeing with what crypt said!) or don't root your phone. You fail to even look for instructions. I don't understand how your PC can't read your SD card? That probably means it's dead (Which means you need a new one) OR the thought of taking it out and plugging it into an sd adapter never occured to you. I bet you even wiped your SD card somehow.
How come you can't put the recovery on your SD card? Or the rom or anything else

And why was the ROM (update.zip) on your phone and not your sd card? I believe that you fail fail fail to look at any instructions the awesome people have posted here. If you fail to follow instructions given on these forums, how will you follow instructions given from members trying to help you? I find it useless to bother helping any further.
I don't have an sd card adapter and since my phone won't start up, my pc won't recognize my device anymore. Take it easy btw, I'm only looking for help
If help is what you're looking for, then go look around under these forums. I suggest you go and buy an adapter as well, it'd help a lot. May even be your only choice. (I believe there's another way but I'm not going to bother with that as it may be too complicated for you. I dont' think it'd work either with your recovery)
I don't mean to be an ass but when questions like this are posted, I hope you understand. It's as bad as asking how to turn your phone on vibrate. The manual is with your phone and everything, take a look or get some common sense and try the volume buttons.
The forum is your manual. You wiped your ROM, well if you think about it, of course it wont boot up all the way. It has nothing to load. Can't put stuff on your sd card? Get an adapter. It's simple.

I thought people would think right away that they would need an sd adapter to somehow get it onto their computer once they have no other choice lol.
okay that's clear, thank u for your time
For now I don't have an sd adapter, so I stuck the sd card in my brother's phone and tried to put the necessary files but now it seems I have to format the sd card.. Is this harmful or should I just go ahead?
I have the latest recovery but I get a popup message on my PC saying I should format the SD card. Will I still have the 'data' file where I need to put the recovery file under?

what ever you have on it will be erased.
You can also use fastboot to flash the recovery without having to import it into the sdcard. I would not recommend it to you do since lack the basic android knowledge. (all the command are listed in the thread i posted earlier)
If I format the SD card, where should I put the recovery.img if there is no /data anymore? (using the reboot method)

Help! Blank SD Card?!?!

Can anyone tell me what happened? I was in the process of rooting the phone and got through toasts root instructions. Then once the phone booted again, I tried rebooting into Recovery mode and was left only with the "!" sign over the phone with no recovery options.
I had to take the battery out to get the phone to reboot. Once the phone started up I tried rebooting again into recovery mode with the same results. Once I rebooted again I got a message in the notifications saying "blank SD card SD card blank or has unsupported file system" And now it wants me to reformat.
Is there anyway to recover my SD card? I really don't want to loose my backup. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks ahead!

Ugh, I wish I would have paid more attention to detail. Any suggestions to getting my SD card recovered? Or am I SOL and I should just format it?
more info. What point in Toast Root did you get this !
Also, like above, did you download the EvoRecovery zip and extract it to your desktop? and follow all instructions?
Also, if possible, always make a backup of your sdcard to your computer before doing any of these things.
However, If you did everything correctly, and it is still doing this....
I think you still could get to your SDCard, if there is anything on your SDCard, (unless it is the EVO SDCard issue)... If you can get to your sdcard thru usb or by taking it out AFTER turning off phone. You could either make your Backup of the card, or put your Backup back on your Card and start over.

I got through all of Toasts Root before this happened. It happened when I was trying to boot back into recovery mode to flash the new ROM and Radio.
Fortunately I just found my Micro SD card reader and everything is still there. I'm now copying it to my HD. So all is well.
I guess now I'll just reformat the card so the evo can read it, load everything back on to the sd card and go into recovery mode with the phone plugged into the computer using the CMD. Hopefully everything will work out.
EDIT: WTF, now the SD card reads fine after putting it back in the phone. So weird. I guess now I'll just try recovery mode, Flash, then restore my back up.

yeah you should be fine. and yeah for now i'd just use the adb reboot recovery command then run the .bak file to get into custom recovery. once you get everything up and running you can work on getting the update.zip custom recovery method going which the link is posted below. Will save you from having to hook up to the computer to get into recovery.

Don't let it scare you too much. It's very hard to brick your phone unless you're flashing radios that you should not be. As long as your loading evo roms you'll be fine

[Q] Should I use odin?

Hi,
I was a keen follower of the Cyanogen Nightlys. But after build 38 when my phone was idle for more the 10-20 mins, my phone display went blank and none of the buttons worked. So the only way to fix this was to reset the device by taking out the battery.
So I went back to build build 38 and restored my device with Titanium BackUp. Same thing happened (blank screen, buttons didn't work) after awhile. Then I just put build 38 with no backup, worked for awhile but after I installed an application (Whatsapp) and restored my contacts from Google, after 15 mins the screen went blank again.
So i ended up getting frustrated and decided to wipe everything (including the sd card) and put cyanogen fresh. So I plugged in my Nexus S to the computer and did a normal (FAT 32, default allocation) format. Windows then said sd card was empty but once I unplugged and checked the sd card, everything was still there. Plugged it back to the pc and and everything was still there.
Then I tried using the format storage option in settings--> storage itself, same thing happened, it said it was formatted but nothing changed on the sd card. Even tried formatting using clockwork recovery, same thing.
What makes things worse is that now every time i place something on the sd card, windows says its there, but it disappears once i unplug it. So it seems that the storage doesn't want to change anything on itself. So since the last ROM i put before the format was a fresh update of cyanogen build 38, every time i reboot my phone it runs setup wizard (asks for my google access details). And freezes every so often.
Please help, i have no idea what else to try. I was gonna used odin, but I need to buy/make the cable. So is it really necessary?
EDIT: Every time i install a new rom eg. MIUI, it says it has been installed in recovery, but cyanogen loads when i reset the phone
EDIT: I tried ODIN, it didnt worked, now it just gets stuck on the google screen. I can still enter recovery and the bootloader. But the sd card seems to be corrupt.

What cable? Admittedly, I've not used Odin on the Nexus S, however i've used it plenty on the Galaxy S i had previously, all i ever used was the standard USB cable that came with the phone.
I thought u needed a special cable? I really dont want to use odin cause i hear people bricked there phones using it. I hae the i9020
I don't know that I would have use windows to format the card. I would have done the oem lock and oem unlock to clear the sdcard storage. Doing the oem unlock again totally clears the phone and then you should be starting all over from scratch like day one when you purchased the phone.

I tried " fastboot oem lock" and fastboot oem unlock" but everything stayed the same. And yes i agree, using windows was stupid, I really wasn't thinking properly.
Ok so does the option, setting*storage*erase sd card work?

No it didn't, it says its formatted. But when i check back on the file explorer, everything is there...
Could the problem be that i choose FAT32 as the file system when formatting using windows?

[Q] Sprint Nexus S 4g bricked: HELP!

Welp, tried to root the Nexus S 4g.
On rebooting, it gets stuck at the Nexus S bootscreen, pauses, keeps going, etc.
Got CWM 3.0.0.5, and can fastboot, get into CWMRecovery.
From there, I'm at a loss. Tried to restore Nandroid backup, but it says a whole bunch of stuff, basically saying E: failed to find "cache" partition, Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log, etc.
Tried to apply zip from CWM backup, it says "No files found."
Tried going into mounts/storage to mount USB storage, but nothing appears on desktop of either Mac or PC, so I can't get move files onto the SD card.
Now, when I just power up, it just says "Google," and there's a unlock icon at the bottom. Nothing else.
Anyone have any solutions?
Yeah stop using that old version. Of ClockworkMod recovery
Seriously use 3.0.2.4. Its in the clockwork thread in the dev section.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Would if I could, but I can't get anything on the SD card!
Trying to mount USB storage from CWM-- no drive shows up on Mac or PC for me to move stuff onto it.
Boot into fastboot by turning off phone, turn back on while holding volume rocker up. Leave it at the screen where you could select reboot, recovery etc. Download the above mentioned clockwork recovery image from the thread to your computer. Flash using fastboot command. No need to copy anything to SD card.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Having the exact same issue. Nothing appears in the nandroid folder now either after replacing the recovery image with 3.0.2.4 and I can't mount the USB storage or get anything onto the SD card. Phone won't boot. Unsure of the folder structure on this phone to try pushing a file with adb or fastboot.
Same issues here. I was able to flash CWM recovery 3.0.2.4, but when I go to "mounts and storage" and "mount USB storage", I the drive does not appear on both Mac and PC. I'd like to transfer the stock NS4G image onto the phone so I can install the zip from the sdcard...
When I try to use the command, "adb push", it can't find the SD card.
Same problem
I flashed it , and since then i cannot mount the device , i have a good image to push but the device is not opening up the storage for me to push the image.
I had the same problem. Got it all fixed up.

I had the same problem this morning:
I posted a workaround that worked well for me in Post #35
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1072698&page=4
If it works for you click 'Thanks'
Figured it out
Alright , this is what i did to fix the problem, i booted up the system with the bad image i had, connected to wifi and downloaded the Nexus S 4G deoxed image that is out there directly from the internet to the phone. Then i moved it from the download folder to the root using file manager.
I rebooted into recovery and was able to wipe and then flash the recovery image and reboot. Once i rebooted i regained control over the usb and memory card. hope it helps you guys.
How Do I Fix "REALLY" Bricked and DEAD Nexus S4g?
All posts on this thread presuppose a working Nexus S 4g. When I use the term bricked, I mean dead. About a month ago I followed directions on one of these threads on how to easily and with one click route my jellybean running phone. For some reason the process never completed, and all I was able to accomplish was unlocking the phone. When I ran the check to see if it was truly rooted, the response showed the phone was still unrooted. About 30 days later it was deader than a brick. Somewhere I read that Jellybean on Sprint might be the culprit. Anyway, I have a dead phone. Sprint wouldn't even check it because the screen was cracked. Fortunately, I bought a new one, new to me anyway, on eBay for $37. It is still running android 2.3.7(Gingerbread), and the phone is attempting to push the Ice Cream Sandwich update. I am fighting the update until I figure out what killed my phone.
Just wondering whether there is anything I can do with my old phone, even if I only use it like an old iTouch for music and surfing via Wi-Fi. Anyone?
I attempted the one click method described here, but my desktop cannot find any devices. So it truly is dead. Comments appreciated. I have used several different cables, unsuccessfully.

Hi,
What method did u use to root? What thread? Cuz it may need to newest version of the recovery.
anyways...
Try charging up a battery on newer phone and put in dead phone... but instead if turning on normally, boot into recovery.
If it worked then use a back up to flash it back to stock. Assuming u were able to back it up b4 root.
If not plug into computer. See if it turns on or can go into either recovery or boat loader mode and if so perhaps computer will recognize it.

[Q] Galaxy nexus stuck in bootloader

Hey guys,
I'm new here and I looked around for an answer to my question but the posts I read were either non applicable or didn't work. Please if this has already been answered feel free to redirect me, thanks.
I have a galaxy nexus and I recently rooted it and flashed a custom ROM (Eagles Blood for 4.1.1) as well as installing Google Apps from sdcard in boot recovery screen. I have rooted several phones and flashed countless ROM's but I am stuck and I don't know what to do... Each time I boot up my phone it refuses to boot and loads directly to the bootloader screen. I can switch to boot recovery but that's about it. I can't get it properly boot the life of me..
I have tried re-wiping data/factory reset as well as wiping all caches and reflashing the ROM + GAPPS. I am unable to put another ROM on it because I can't mount the SD card and transfer another .zip ROM to it.
I also DID NOT make a backup because, well idk why I didn't but there is no backup whatsoever so if anyone has any ideas as to how to fix this please let me know.
You could always use a usb card reader for the sd card and put another rom on it via your computer and then try again

I think with the galaxy nexus the SD card is built in, what I mean is that when I take out the battery the only other thing I can remove is the sim card.
