Can anyone tell me what happened? I was in the process of rooting the phone and got through toasts root instructions. Then once the phone booted again, I tried rebooting into Recovery mode and was left only with the "!" sign over the phone with no recovery options.
I had to take the battery out to get the phone to reboot. Once the phone started up I tried rebooting again into recovery mode with the same results. Once I rebooted again I got a message in the notifications saying "blank SD card SD card blank or has unsupported file system" And now it wants me to reformat.
Is there anyway to recover my SD card? I really don't want to loose my backup. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks ahead!
you didnt run the .bat file included in the evorecovery folder you downloaded. You did download that file right?

I did, and it booted into recovery mode that time. Is that how you have to boot into recovery mode every time? With the phone plugged into the computer? and loading it through CMD?

Ugh, I wish I would have paid more attention to detail. Any suggestions to getting my SD card recovered? Or am I SOL and I should just format it?
more info. What point in Toast Root did you get this !
Also, like above, did you download the EvoRecovery zip and extract it to your desktop? and follow all instructions?
Also, if possible, always make a backup of your sdcard to your computer before doing any of these things.
However, If you did everything correctly, and it is still doing this....
I think you still could get to your SDCard, if there is anything on your SDCard, (unless it is the EVO SDCard issue)... If you can get to your sdcard thru usb or by taking it out AFTER turning off phone. You could either make your Backup of the card, or put your Backup back on your Card and start over.

I got through all of Toasts Root before this happened. It happened when I was trying to boot back into recovery mode to flash the new ROM and Radio.
Fortunately I just found my Micro SD card reader and everything is still there. I'm now copying it to my HD. So all is well.
I guess now I'll just reformat the card so the evo can read it, load everything back on to the sd card and go into recovery mode with the phone plugged into the computer using the CMD. Hopefully everything will work out.
EDIT: WTF, now the SD card reads fine after putting it back in the phone. So weird. I guess now I'll just try recovery mode, Flash, then restore my back up.

yeah you should be fine. and yeah for now i'd just use the adb reboot recovery command then run the .bak file to get into custom recovery. once you get everything up and running you can work on getting the update.zip custom recovery method going which the link is posted below. Will save you from having to hook up to the computer to get into recovery.

Don't let it scare you too much. It's very hard to brick your phone unless you're flashing radios that you should not be. As long as your loading evo roms you'll be fine

I was running a hero ROM on my device, and wanted to try an Eclair ROM. I wanted to flash it but in the process I saw something like: E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command on the screen. I went ahead and performed a wipe because I read it was harmless. But then the installation was aborted because the file update.zip couldn't be found (even though it was on my phone). So I went ahead and rebooted my device. Now it always gets stuck at the little green android, then he disappears and I get a black screen. The device remains on however and I need to pull out the battery for it to turn off... COULD ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME
After doing all you did your device should boot normally. Obviously it didn't. I don't know what went wrong, but if you boot into recovery you should be able to flash a ROM.
Just make sure you have the right recovery and right ROM files.
I only have that Eclair rom on my device (which can't be flashed).
My PC won't read the SD card anymore so I can't put any rom on it...

Your not bricked... you basically just failed the update process then wiped your current installed rom with the Wipe. Now you rebooted the phone but there's no rom to load. You now see only the boot starting up and hitting the wall with no rom to load.
That makes sense.. How can I fix this issue?
thank you
Would help if you could give us some info on your phone.
Can you enter recovery or fastboot again ?
phone model, spl & radio version ?
this is why Iphones were invented.... For people who cant understand simple directions or even read for that matter.
What recovery do you have? Get another rom, go into recovery, hit the USB toggle switch and put anothe rrom on. It doesnt have to be named update.zip...
Nevermind.. Doesnt matter what I type here you'll go an do what you want anyway.
I have the htc Magic
How do I get to see my radio and spl?
Yes, I can enter recovery mode.
thank you
I can enter fastboot!
RADIO: 3.22.20.17
SPL 1.33.2005
btw it's a 32A
Where is this USB toggle switch??
Android system recovery utility
Use trackball to highlight:
click to select.
reboot system now [Home+Back]
apply sdcard:update.zip [Alt+S]
wipe data/factory reset [Alt+W]
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command
That's all I see.
Only the latest recovery has the Usb option in it.

+1 to that.
You wipe your phone, couldn't boot it and you did not know the reason for this. You wiped your ROM, there's nothing to load up when you boot it. It's so simple.

Wow, just wow. If you need spoonfeed after spoonfeed, How in the world did you root your phone in the first place? You run into problems at EVERY step. Honestly, get the iphone (It's not that badddddd of a phone! Just agreeing with what crypt said!) or don't root your phone. You fail to even look for instructions. I don't understand how your PC can't read your SD card? That probably means it's dead (Which means you need a new one) OR the thought of taking it out and plugging it into an sd adapter never occured to you. I bet you even wiped your SD card somehow.
How come you can't put the recovery on your SD card? Or the rom or anything else

And why was the ROM (update.zip) on your phone and not your sd card? I believe that you fail fail fail to look at any instructions the awesome people have posted here. If you fail to follow instructions given on these forums, how will you follow instructions given from members trying to help you? I find it useless to bother helping any further.
I don't have an sd card adapter and since my phone won't start up, my pc won't recognize my device anymore. Take it easy btw, I'm only looking for help
If help is what you're looking for, then go look around under these forums. I suggest you go and buy an adapter as well, it'd help a lot. May even be your only choice. (I believe there's another way but I'm not going to bother with that as it may be too complicated for you. I dont' think it'd work either with your recovery)
I don't mean to be an ass but when questions like this are posted, I hope you understand. It's as bad as asking how to turn your phone on vibrate. The manual is with your phone and everything, take a look or get some common sense and try the volume buttons.
The forum is your manual. You wiped your ROM, well if you think about it, of course it wont boot up all the way. It has nothing to load. Can't put stuff on your sd card? Get an adapter. It's simple.

I thought people would think right away that they would need an sd adapter to somehow get it onto their computer once they have no other choice lol.
okay that's clear, thank u for your time
For now I don't have an sd adapter, so I stuck the sd card in my brother's phone and tried to put the necessary files but now it seems I have to format the sd card.. Is this harmful or should I just go ahead?
I have the latest recovery but I get a popup message on my PC saying I should format the SD card. Will I still have the 'data' file where I need to put the recovery file under?

what ever you have on it will be erased.
You can also use fastboot to flash the recovery without having to import it into the sdcard. I would not recommend it to you do since lack the basic android knowledge. (all the command are listed in the thread i posted earlier)
If I format the SD card, where should I put the recovery.img if there is no /data anymore? (using the reboot method)
So I've searched the forums for an answer to my question and haven't found anything so here it goes...
I downloaded BB v5 from Pete's site and went through one-click root and flashing my rom, and backing up my device. I mounted my SD card to my computer moved bugless beast over to my root, renamed it 'update' and powered off my phone. Powered in recovery and tried to reinstall packages and got an error: error at installation, installation aborted error at write_raw_data or something to that effect. google'd and came to the conclusion that through me trying to hurry to download BB i did not wipe/clear data. Now my phone sits at the "AT&T World Phone" screen and will not go any further. Tried to power down and power back up in recovery and don't have the access to restore my backups. tried to plug my phone back into my computer and i can not access my SD card from my computer to delete the BB zip and add the original 'update' zip. Tried to enter download mode and run Odin3 but still can not access my SD card, so Odin doesn't run, just says 'complete' I'm assuming because it can't find the device.
I've heard these phones are hard to truly 'brick'. Please tell me someone can help me and tell me that this is fixable.
Thanks,
A
Which odin did you use? Odin 1 click jf6? If not you should try that. Dl mode, plug in, press start. It should boot.

You have this wrong, to properly use odin you need to:
-Open Odin
-Power down phone/remove batter (some people suggest removing sim and sd card)
-Plug phone to computer while holding the vol buttons or just up or down depending on phone
-Phone should get to download mode and press start
If this doesn't work its possible your three button combo is dicked.
It worked! thanks for the help guys. I had the phone in download mode before i opened odin, odin cleaned me, sorry for being a noob
Again, thanks for the help guys
I haven't found this issue so here is my story...
For some reason my lock PW keyboard changed to numeric on me today and for the life of me I couldn't get it to go back so after an hour of rebooting, flash back-ups in CWMR and removing the batery, nothing would get me back to a regular keyboard. I got flustered and just punched in stuff seeing that warning that if I fail again it will erase all data. I thought that will be a pain but I can restore everything in an hour or so because I back everything up, right? WRONG. All data was ALL F$%^&ng data! external SD, cleaned off too.
BUT hold on, I have it also backed up on my PC because I'm smart still right? No dice...get error E:Can't open /sdcard (bad)
So this is what I have to work with...
I can get into CWMR Touch v5.5.0.4 ( I can see what is on my external SD card but cant run anything)
I can get into DOWNLOAD mode BUT Oden wont recognize...it reads device connected for about 2 seconds and then device disconnected)
If im CWMR mode Oden will see my device...not sure if that is good or bad
if I just power on the phone it just goes to the samsung logo and starts booting but never quite gets there....( I left it spinning for 20 min and nothing...)
Any thoughts?
I feel if I could get ODEN to see my phone I would be in good shape.
Also I have another phone and SII and all is read fine so I know it isn't my cord, USB, PC, ODEN...
Thanks in advance
Oh...I think my phone isn't in debugging mode...and that could be it but how could I get in to check if I cant boot the phone?
First you have to make sure your phone drivers are installed correctly, so either download and install kies if you don't have it. Or if you have it got to connection troubleshoot, make sure your phone is not plugged, let it run and when its done put your phone into download mode and connect it. Let the computer install the drivers, don't unplug the phone until it's done or it may screw up. When its done close kies completely and run odin.
Did you try simply flashing a rom from CWM?
And I'm pretty sure you could get a restoration program and recover the data from your external SD card, usually deleting only means its being marked as free space but all the previous data should still be there until something new is written.
When you in download mode are you pressing the up volume to confirm you want download mode?
You can go into download mode but still need to hit up or down to confirm.
As for CWM not reading your external SD did you check to make sure that it's mounted?

CWM "read"s my SD card, ( I can see the rom and backup on it) but once I try to flash, that's when I get the error saying the the path is not valid :/
For DL mode, yes, I hit up and the little droid shows up saying Downloading. In the Upper left corner it reads
ODIN MODE

Current Binary: Samsung Official

The only way I can get the phone to be read by my PC is in CWMR..Keis will not recognize it but I did reinstall the drivers.
Should I remount in CWMR? Would it still read what was on the card if it wasn't mounted correctly?
I got ODIN to read my device and was able to flash Stock ICS 4.0.4 on it!
Thanks for your feedback!

first off, im not sure if im putting this in the right forum section, forgive me if im not also this is long, but please read on.
anyway heres whats up.
Recently the Nexus S line started receiving their 4.1 update. I have a Nexus S 4G (so obviously Sprint). Angry - again- that the 4G model did not get the update (or will be anytime soon) i rooted my phone again after some time.
after some random issues with it (apps would crash constantly) i attempted to switch to CM10. that didnt work. so i went to CM9 and then CM10. everything was fine until the phone would reboot on its own from time to time and every now and then i would pull the battery. After some time the issues stopped.
NOW, the other night my phone died. this morning i decided to charge it. after charging for about 20 minutes i attempted to turn it on, but i ended up getting stuck at the bootlogo (Google with the unlock) i pulled the battery, and tried again. Same thing. I proceeded to go into recovery and flash a ROM that i knew was safe to boot into, except, the SD card would not mount- saying there was an error. Thats where im at now. the SD will not mount, and im stuck at the bootlogo. I believe i "bricked" my phone.
heres what i need help with. I locked the bootloader with Fastboot, but i still have CWM on the phone. i cant delete CWM without getting into the SD card, but the SD card refuses to mount. I want to get CWM off, so that i can send the phone in for repair/a new one. my warranty - although void now - still has a 5 months left on it. Im not worried about switching the ROM because the phone wont boot anyways, which means that when i give in, they wont be able to do anything besides see that its not rooted.
TL;DR
i think i bricked my phone, but i still have hope for it. SD wont mount, and im stuck at bootloader. i need a way to either fix this, or delete CWM somehow. Im on a Nexus S 4G.
PLEASE! Any suggestions are appreciated!
Do u have a backup showing when u go to backups?
Or is it SD card not mountable at all?
Next can u mount via USB?
If so copy ur SD to then format it.
Do u have a backup of ur SD card on ur computer b4 this happened?
If so then try to format SD card then put ur backup in it and then flash a backup or new ROM.
Vs Nexus S 4G
if you have fastboot then you can flash factory images... read this guide a couple times before trying it

but you need a ns4g image from here

ill check that out. another issue im having is that i think i found a way to fix this, but i can only fix it if my bootloader is unlocked, which, in attempt to mask my errors, i locked, and now i cannot unlock it. when i press "yes, unlock my bootloader" the phone freezes up. i need some way to unlock my bootloader OR enable USB debugging from my computer. thing is, while i DO have all the drivers for my phone, the computer will not recognise the phone. It makes a sound when i plug in the phone, to show something IS plugged in, but it does not show up in my drives.
Is the phone locked by a provider?
CWM works? Format all - data & system & cache & SD CARD.
Then use ODIN to flash a proper stock firmware, unlock & root your phone one again.
A lot of work but necessary...:fingers-crossed:

heres the catch about CWM, i can format all my data and system and wipe the cache. When i format the system, that also formats the SD.BUT under the advanced options in CWM, i cant format ONLY the SD. it gives me a mounting error. And i believe i found a solution through linux, but i need the bootloader unlocked, which i locked up again. Everyone says odin is the way to go but i cant get it on because the SD is unmountable.
is there some sort of adapter i can plug into the USB port at the bottom of the phone that lets me attach an external SD? i believe if i can attach an external SD card which contains the things i need such as a stable ROM, then i can get the phone working. i came across a website which repairs bricked phones. In a video of a Nexus S brick repair, the tech guy installed some files through a "jig"(?) do you think if i can get my hands on one of those i can fix my phone?
I was running CM10 on a rooted TFT101. I was having some WiFI connectivity issues so I decided I would try out a new rom. I used Titamium Backup and backed up all my needed files to my Mico SD card. Once backed up, I rebooted into CWM v6.0.1.3. I went to do a factory reset prior to flashing the new rom. The tablet just froze. I rebooted the tablet back into CWM. I tried to again do a factory reset and again the tablet just froze. I tried to boot back into CM10 and I just sits and spins and never actually boots into the OS. I decided that I would just go ahead and just flash the new rom and do a factory reset after the fact. I placed the new rom on the micro sd card and booted back into CWM. I attempted to install zip from SD card and now I get e:can't mount /sdcard/. I have tried 3 different micro sd cards and nothing. I have formatted each to fat32 and not one of them is recognized. All 3 are recognized by windows.
Since I can't boot into the OS...and I can't load a new rom....I am dead in the water. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
If you can get it to that endless boot logo and connect it through USB, ADB (info - download) should be able to access whatever's left on your device assuming it gets far enough in the boot process. If it does, you can adb pull the backups to your computer to save them.
That being said, Easy Flasher will help you get back to 100% unrooted stock and "unbrick" your device with a few clicks. Then you can start over with a new recovery and rom. But it will wipe your entire device clean, hence why I suggest you first check if you still have backups and if you do, pull them on your computer using adb.
I can't help with the CWM problem, I haven't used it in a long time.

Thank you Lethe6. I saw that option and wondered if that might help me. I will try it out today.
One quick question. If I flash back to stock I am guessing I will just need to reroot once I am able to boot it back up?
Thank you again for your assistance.
Yes exactly. Easy Flasher has a root option as well so it's fairly easy to get going with customizations after restoring to stock!
