So I'm sitting at my desk when all of the sudden my phone starts making this annoying sound like they use for severe weather alerts on TV. I was using a tethering app at the time so the first thing that popped in my mind is that Verizon detected it somehow and fried my phone to get even. But when I picked it up there was a message on the screen advising me that I might die in a possible flash flood that might occur in my area...
Pretty neat, I just hope we don't get them too often, especially in the middle of the night. Here is more info on it:

I believe the stock TW messaging app has some emergency alert setting in it. Im not at my phone right now so i can't tell you exactly what it says.
Same thing here. Cool as Hell

ive gotten this twice since release day. One was for flood warning and the other tornado warning. Im in NYC WTF!!!! LOL scared the **** outta me! The tornado almost touching down in Midtown was one of the craziest things ive ever seen! I just wish we could change the ringtone, its loud and super annoying but I guess thats the point.
is there any way to disable, i dont wanna know if im gonna die :highfive:

Let's seriously not turn this into a political debate. It has nothing to do with one single President. The Emergency Alert System has been around for one time and a lot of the stuff we're seeing in phones now was initiated by Bush.
It's also something that pretty much everybody supports regardless of political affiliation. A national Presidential alert has never been issued, not even on 9/11, and would only be sent out in the case of an incredibly serious natural disaster or attack against the country. If you seriously want to be kept in the dark even if an emergency far worse than 9/11 happens, well, it sounds like you might have some trust issues.
Thread closed
The information on how to disable these alerts is contained within this thread, it's gone political, so thread cleaned and closed.

Suppose your significant other, boss, or teacher picks up your phone and they are curious about what's on your phone. Luckily for you, you remembered to set a password or pattern so no prying eyes can look at your info. But wouldn't you like to know who and when tried spying on you?
The idea I would like to share is for an app that would take a picture and time stamp of somebody incorrectly enters a password or pattern on the lockscreen. This app would silently take a pic with the front facing camera.
If I possessed the knowledge to write an app myself, I would and sell this app in the market. Just wanted to share this idea to those of you who can make it happen.

That would be a sweet idea, but it would probably need to replace the lockscreen in a manner like WidgetLocker does.
That's a brilliant idea.
Eventually this app could include audio and video recordings along with a location fix.

Not sure if it would need to replace the whole lockscreen, The idea came, in part, from taking a screen cap of the lockscreen in MIUI. (The menu+vol down method)

I really can't take the quality control issues any more. I think I am going to try and get a Sensation. I really love the phone, I just can't take the battery over heats, and the screen bleed, and the horrible battery life. I know there will be an impending Gingerbread update that will hopefully fix 2/3 main gripes I have with the phone, but it has still left a bad taste in my mouth. I know that HTC never has this bad of a problem with their phones. I think I am going to try and get a replacement for the Sensation through T-Mobile. If I can't I will deal with warranty replacements until I get a good G2x.
Anyone else starting to feel this conclusion?
I am getting a warranty replacement, and that will be the determining factor for my decision.

Thanks, I know this post won't do well here, but I am really fed up. I have never had a phone with this many out of the box problems. Plus replacements with the same problems! I really want to give this phone a 2nd chance, but its an up hill battle. The power behind this phone is smudged by the short battery life and the overheating issue when charging. I am hoping the replacement I get isn't the same thing as the one I have currently.

Same here. That app chewed through the battery like nothing else, even with the LED brightness turned down. Caused all kinds of reboots and whatnot. Deleted it and all issues with my phone disappeared instamagically.
So keep your GF happy, and deal with the reboots... Oooooooor fix your phone, keep it and stop obsessing over text messages... Oooooooor try the new notification app that is in the themes and apps section, keep the phone, make your GF happy and save the world...

I keed I keed. +1 with the notification app, deleting that made my life better. Screen bleed is something I understand too, but that's why I like the notification bar mod sonnysekhon posted in his CM7 themes. Makes the bleed look normal at least until I play a movie or something. Other than that I'm happy. Good luck if you go for the sensation.
Yes but I really depend on it! D: lol. I wish they had an LED notification light on the G2x.
For me its not just screen bleed, its the overheating issue as well, and the poor battery life(yes even with out the app).
Flash faux's 1.2.2 and his 1.9 kernal. It's been rock solid for me. My battery's been off the charger for 10hrs now and its at 57%.

It doesn't matter that you have had your apps since the G2. Apps will act differently from device to device. For instance. I have always had the NFL Mobile app and when I put it on my G2X, it was causing it to overheat and was killing the battery big time. It would drop 10% ever 15 minutes while at idle. The very second I deleted the app, everything went back to normal.

Won't hear any flack from me. I am getting the Sensation as well but I don't know if I am going to give it to my wife or give her the G2X. Either way, which ever one I decide on is hitting the bricks once the Hercules gets here. I already purchased the Sensation and returned it the same day due to over heating, freezing and reboots. Seems like every phone now adays ships with bugs and it's like playing a lottery in order to get a bug free one. Looking over in the Sensation forum isn't to promising considering all of it's own problems.
O well. I'll wait until the Sensation gets released from T-Mobile so I can return it as many times I need to like I did with my G2X. I had to return 3 in order to get a perfect device with absolutely no bugs. I don't settle for bugs on my phone and I wouldn't expect anyone else too.

Apps certainly do have a lot to do with the rebooting issues that some people are having. My phone has only rebooted maybe once and it was because of an app. Removed the app and no more rebooting. Replacing the phone will do nothing if you continue to use it the same way and don't do any actual troubleshooting yourself.

Not sure which LED notification app you're using but the one I'm using hasn't caused me any reboots or battery drain (could just be my device but I'm not sure). It's called LG 2x/Black Notifications, made to be used both for the G2x and O2x
Hey guys im getting a bunch of weird EMERGENCY ALERTS to my phone. The message sender "Sever Alerts" is highlighted in blue under messaging and a crazy alarm type ringtone sounds.
The text message reads: flash flood warning this area til 6 PM PDT. avoid flood areas. check local media. -nws
I have gotten 3 so far today and the weird thing is that theres blue skies all day in San Diego.
Anyone else experience this?

Samsung wants me to send the phone in to fix this but I'm not sure being without a phone for a week or more is worth. Plus, I'm pretty sure if I install a custom ROM this problem will disappear. I'm frustrated, this is a stupid easy problem to fix (with an app) but a BRAND NEW phone should not have this problem to begin with. I wonder if I flashed the stock rom on top of the stock rom (lol) if that would work? Only one other person has this problem?

As a workaround you can choose "Silent" as your Notification sound.
If you only need this functionality at work for example look at Llama that will allow you to configure it very easy.

I see the same thing if I set the phone for Silent mode.
There's all different notification sound settings in this phone, I've noticed - my email accounts have their own notification settings per account, messaging has its setting, etc.
Maybe Silent mode primarily silences ringtones and doesn't prevent separate apps from making sounds? Which types of notifications continue to make sounds?
- ooofest
All of them. Anything not set to silent (email, text, messaging, etc) makes a audible notification when the phone is set on mute. Also, when my phone is set on vibrate I also have audible notifications.

So, it doesn't seem to claim affecting your sounds beyond the ringer and maybe keypad noises or similar. Working as designed, it seems (not that I agree with their design, in this case).

Yeah, an app which can configure sounds across all your apps and settings seems best, here.

Appreciate you looking that up in the manual. I actually downloaded it after your post . I bought the app and set my work and mute profiles... Sometimes a little distraction is nice. Trust me, after you've been staring at VCO divider tables for a while, something simple like "Can you just turn off this light?" is a good way to improve productivity. I'm back in the tables again this morning, but this gives me something interesting and rewarding to do during the roughly hour and a half a full build takes.

I do agree that it would be nice. Think about it the only time the lights are on is if the screen is on, if the screen is on, chances are you are touching the screen unless you are watching a movie... there are a few roms out that don't have this problem like the beam port... Maybe compare roms and kernels? There is bound to be a solution. I hope you find your answer and sorry i wasn't trying to blast anyone.
Its all good....i watch alt of movies while sitting at the back gates waiting for the parks to empty out at Disney so i can go to work and the those lights are quite annoying in the dark watching movies lol
