If you really want to disable them permanently, it's a one-line change in the kernel. You basically don't tell it where the light switch is .
Which ROM are you using?

Code:
gpio_direction_output(_3_GPIO_TOUCH_EN, onoff);
Well damn, looks like that might not only have turned off the backlight, but also the ability to use the button. Black electrician's tape is probably an easier solution if that was your goal.
Somehow I think you still want to be able to use the buttons though.
Isn't there another line of code that tells how bright the keys can be? Is it possible to set that at 0?

I'm not trying to hinder development, but in my opinion I would rather them spend their time on stuff that is less cosmetic... that stuff can come later because there are more important issues they are working on. I'm sure it will one day get fixed...

Sometimes a little distraction is nice. Trust me, after you've been staring at VCO divider tables for a while, something simple like "Can you just turn off this light?" is a good way to improve productivity. I'm back in the tables again this morning, but this gives me something interesting and rewarding to do during the roughly hour and a half a full build takes.

Pfft!
no one here is asking the main devs for this fix anymore....its already been said several times they dont know....sooo maybe other people in here can try to figure out a fix.
So have a nice day.
Also its not just so "cosmetic" as you think.....the people that are on ics based roms would truely appreciate this fix due to the amount of battery life gained if those damn lights didnt stay on.
I would like to know which line this is as well. I dont need extra keys in beam. I want just the hard keys

I do agree that it would be nice. Think about it the only time the lights are on is if the screen is on, if the screen is on, chances are you are touching the screen unless you are watching a movie... there are a few roms out that don't have this problem like the beam port... Maybe compare roms and kernels? There is bound to be a solution. I hope you find your answer and sorry i wasn't trying to blast anyone.
Its all good....i watch alt of movies while sitting at the back gates waiting for the parks to empty out at Disney so i can go to work and the those lights are quite annoying in the dark watching movies lol
GOOD NEWS EVERYONE! Theres an app called screen filter on the market that does the trick by turning off the softkeys umtil you actually click them details are on my capacitive buttons thread.
Its kinda old news...but it does work but its just more steps for getting what you want......when it could all be avoided

Does anyone know of an app or a setting to control the touch button lights at the bottom of the screen?
i tried searching for a solution but found none.
I like reading off of the kindle app at night and with 22% brightness and white text on a black background, the result is a perfect experience -- except for the four blinding leds every time I turn the page...
This might also be helpful for those with issues during streaming video (i.e. Netflix).

Install BLN control and check Activate Notifications. The lights will only stay on for a few seconds after you touch the screen/buttons.

Well you can't disable them. Not even the stock roms let you do that, the best bet is for them to only blink, which is they turn on when you're using them.

I've used every rom on XDA and they're all great in their own way. I'm currently running the latest miui by whitehawkx. At first it was great but now I'm getting slow down and random loss of signal that only returns with a restart. I also have problems with the screen not turning back on properly. I press the lock button and the screen will light up like its about to turn on or it will flash the lockscreen for a second then go blank. Only fix is to relock then unlock again, quite a pain.
I'm looking for a daily rom that will get me at least 9 hours of battery life, is fast and responsive. Like I said, I've used all of the roms here but I don't want to go through the hassle of setting everything up for each rom and testing for multiple days to make a choice. Personal choices are welcome but please say why you like it.
On a side note, does anyone know why updates have pretty much stopped for all the roms our phone can use?
Thank you!

Try Weapon 3. I have been using it for a few weeks without any problems. Better battery life is accomplished with turning off GPS, Bluetooth and data when you're not using them. As well, don't run unnecessary apps and don't overclock.

Ok so i rooted my phone and when i installed a rom every time my screen turns on it shows a bit of static right before it completely turns on this happens on all the romes i try except bionix reloaded for some reason,if anyone can help me outt please do
My Problem Still Exists with All CM7 Based Roms i just hope it wont happen on ICS I found a great rom That does not have this problem with my phone
I think i will keep the Tsugi Rom Because i Really like
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hC8HqBrinBA
at 3 minutes i turn the screen on with no static on Bionix
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YICwp5R_wbM&feature=youtu.be
on MIUI,At the end its in slow motion so you can see
Static? You'd have to try getting a video of it for up to see. Don't know what could be your problem.
Are you talking about a line through the middle of the screen and then you get a full screen? If so that is the "turn on screen animation." Not all roms have this turn on or in them at all. I have never seen or heard of a LCD screen having static. Plus if it was static it would have been on the stock rom and the bionic rom as well

Maybe try a different kernel, or mess with voltages if you have SETCPU.

Hi guys,
I'm running SGS4G with KJ6 rom and drhonks KJ1 Kernel + voodoo lagfix + cwm recovery + debloater.zip + KD1 modem
I love my phone and I use a screen filter app to dim the screen even lower to save batt, still though those annoying soft key lights are blinding at night and surely wasting power...
My question is, is there any Devs out there who would be willing to write a .zip or .tar that I could flash that would completely disable the soft key backlights? They really serve no purpose, we all know where they are, they do not change, why do they need to be illuminated? Anyway I would write the code myself if I had the first clue where to start....
I googled and found an app that will does just what you want as long as your super user is upated and you are rooted...
download screen filter in market
it has an option to disable the lights

Is it just me or are the softkeys really bright on the s2?
Well, ive gone on google and tried to find the answer, but seems like there is not a way to possibly reduce the brightness of the softkeys itself.
However, before i give up (i find those softkeys useful, but hard to use at night as its too bright, and turning off the function is difficult to use) I was wondering if its possible without rooting, by using a 3rd party app.
Thanks

That's an interesting idea. The brightness issue made me turn off that light all together (running CM9). I found the light so distracting when using my phone to read a book or something in a dark room at night...
I hope someone chimes in with an idea.
.
Seriously doubt its possible without root.... with root, the only ones i can find just turn them off.. havent seen anything that just dims.
Would definitely say impossible without root, as you need to edit system files to alter hardware functions. I don't believe there is a variable anywhere to edit that though, because I've only ever seen their functions to be off and on with all the phones I've used that have had them. Just my 2 cents, but I'm sure a skilled dev could give you a better opinion.

Darn alright thanks for your posts!
Hopefully a dev could give his $0.02, as i would believe it would make the softkeys more usable throughout the day and night.

I'm not sure exactly how these specific leds work, but I know with store bought leds, you can use what's called multiplexing which makes them flash faster than your eye can see, but slow enough that it seems as if they are dimmer...not sure if there is a way to lower the speed or if you can even make them flash at all (constantly)
You could also maybe look for a night mode from a third party app to change settings at a certain time
Sent from my SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
That said.. I wonder if its safe to have a an app to lower voltage/amps to these leds.
