Can't delete a file.. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I guess this isn't SG3 specific, so if I should post elsewhere please let me know.
Phone is stock, not rooted.
I used an app called "unrar free" to extract the content of a rar file. I realised afterwards I'd extracted it in the wrong place, so deleted the extracted files, most disappeared but one can't be removed, ES file explorer refuses to remove it and wont rename it either.
The file name includes the character è, I think this is the cause of the problem as this character appears to be ® - I think unrar free screwed up when it created it.
The file is in a folder I have full access to, so if ES file explorer can't delete it, what can ?
Thanks

Try using terminal emulator and using cd to get into the address to delete it

Perfect! thanks.

I find root explorer succeeds whenever es fails, is not just for root, is better at what it does even on stock
Edit: seems I forgot to change my build prop back lol, oh well it's a jewel of a post I guess

Nice did it work? That's what I end up having to do in windows and Linux when something like this happens

real easy question

so i wanted to search but didnt now what terms to use in order to find what i need to know.
basically, after i install an .apk to my phone, can i delete the .apk file off my device?
as with windows, after you use the .exe to install, you can delete it
i thought for sure id have a few responses by now the way this forum moves lol
You may do so if you like. The apk is the installer file.

yes you can delete any .apk file that is downloaded to the phone. all you need to do is either download uninstaller by Rhytm Software in the market or you can just go into menu>settings>applications and go from there.

Boot animations on Virtuous Affinity?

Can I use a custom boot animation with his ROM? if I can, someone please explain the process I would go through.. I have tried nearly everything , thanks

You've tried putting it in the correct place?

where exactly might that be? I'm sorry I am new to this , I can only view my SD CARD on the file manager ? I would really appreciate it if you could walk me through it , tganks

system\customize\resource\bootanimation.zip It is not on the sd card. Use a file explorer like Root Explorer, Astro File Manager, or ES File Explorer to see and edit files in the system folder.
You're going to need a file manager that has root access. Astro File Manager does not. Root Explorer or ES File Explorer do. Use either of those to put the zip in the directory Agoattamer gave you. You may also need to change the permissions on the file. Not exactly sure if that's necessary or what exactly the permissions should be, but it's something to look at if the animation doesn't work.
I'll be damned. I use Root Explorer myself. By far the best and simplest in my opinion, although it is a paid app. And yes you have to tap on "mount R/W" to alter files in the System folder. I suspect in ES File Explorer (free) you have to do the same. Both require SuperUser.
But I always thought Astro File Manager was able to edit system files. If you do a web search there are so many websites and forum threads stating to use Astro to change permissions and edit system files. Wrong. Although it can see system files it can't mount the system folder as Writeable, only Readable. It does not ask for SuperUser permissions. Guess I will never install that app on a rooted phone.
Thanks sharksfan7 for pointing me straight.
Appreciate it guys!

Sorry, guess i should have mentioned how to install.
Just copy the above boot file to the following location: NEEDS ROOT
/system/media
If you have a bootanimation.zip file there I would recommend renaming it to something else, then pasting the above file to that folder, reboot and watch the Apple logo get the golden showers
Thanks!!!
I assume this is HDPI only right? I know a friend that has an Android phone, I don't know if he rooted it, but if he did, I'll recommend him this.

I can do it and i dont have root :S

sorry please forgive the n00biness of this post but how do you get to /system/media ? i assume you can't do it with the standard "connect to usb" then searching the device on your computer? I DO have root...
thanks
If your using a file manager app like astro file manager of root explorer. Open that and scroll down past the SDcard folder and below that you should see the folder "System". Select that then scroll down to Media. Select that and paste the boot animation to that folder.

You shouldnt have to. I just flat out copied the file to that folder and and rebooted, and it worked. I didnt have to change permissions or anything. Just a straight copy & paste.

I have never personally tried to make a boot animation myself. You can do a google search "how to create android bootanimation" that should give you some sites that can give you insight on how to create your own bootnaimation file. The 3D android urinating a friend sent me that one and I dont know if he made or found it.

If you are using Root Explorer did you select the "Mounted as r/w, r/o"?
You might have to select the grey box up top that says mount r/w and press it until it says Mount R/O, then it will let you paste. Try that and see if that helps.
usiing astro , when i try and copy it into system/media i get this message
copy error java.iofilenotfoundexcepion./system/media/apple/destroy-edify.zip*(read onlyfile system)
its getting on my nerves now

Or even better, use File Expert
If your phone is rooted "Root explorer" is the best file manager app I have ever used. It has a text editor/viewer(for xmls and build.prop) and it organizes files you zip or unzip nicely into folders. It isnt free though. Oh and most importantly it allows you to change permissions when dealing with system apps/files like the bootanimation.zip in system/media.
Edit** thought it over & I dont remember if you have to change permissions for bootanimation, but I did.
Ios suckkss.

[Q] Downloaded APK files saved as .zip?

Just recently, on two different PCs, whenever I downlaod an APK from XDA-Developers, they are saved as .zip files (saved as "app.zip" instead of "app.apk"). Downloading from other sites works fine.
Is it something with the forums? or with my PCs?
Can the file be unzipped?

Yes, the file can be unzipped & the contents are what would usually be in an apk file.
I just rename it to "app.apk" & it will work. Its just that it did not happen before, and now, on two PCs whenever I download an APK, I have to rename it first.
Apk in .zip
All APK's are just zip files in a format that Android understands and can un-zip almost like and be installed like a program. So, i think, you need to just change the .zip extension to .apk
The main question was that, previuosly downlaoded APK's from XDA were fine, now, they are saved as .zip. why?

Probably because its not illegal I guess... if you were to upload a paid app as an APK u could get in trouble whereas if its in a .zip file then its not considered an illegal file... if you get me... another possibility is that it just takes up less space hope this helps

[Q] What is baidu folder for ?

I just noticed a folder titled baidu on my Nexus 5 (/storage/emulated/o/baidu). In it there is a single file titled .cuid.
Can someone tell me what this folder and file are for? I checked my Nexus 7 (with stock 4.4 on it) and the folder and file exist on that too.
-EDIT- No, I haven't installed any 'Baidu' titled apps from playstore
Folder doesn't exist on mine...

Its for an app. But we don't know every folder by every app

Baidu is the biggest chinese portal, something like Google in the rest of the world,
in China Google is not accessible and they got this Baidu, maybe your phone was originally planned to be shipped in China
or some guy between Lg factory and you downloaded this app on your phone and forget to delete folder but only app...weird
Thanks for the replies, and I know who Baidu is (which is why I asked the question, as I never installed anything of theirs.)
Its weird that the file and folder are on my tablet too.

Same file here.
Yeah it is a strange file baidu.cuid, but I have it in a different folder: internal memory/baidu I also never installed a baidu app or anything. I did update my s3 with the new 4.3 update.
The question remains what is this file for?
MIUI Launcher/Theme
It's part of the MIUI launcher/theme. I have the same folder on the root of my sdcard (along w/ a 'tempdata' folder inside containing .dat and .db files). I got one of the .dat files to open with Notepad on my PC and could see it was MIUI. I installed the MIUI launcher awhile back - so this explains the orphaned dir for me. Hope this helps someone else looking.
I've got the same thing. It has one hidden file named .cuid and was last modified 3 days ago... I'm on a rooted Verizon M8.
I have it too.
What is the miui launcher or theme?
Mine was recently written to, so I'm worried. Anyone know what happens if this Baidu folder is deleted?
its not one, but many different apps/themes install it if not already in the phone. stop freaking out. if you dont like it, delete it. if it comes back, then its one of the apps that you are now using.
I made a nandroid backup and the deleted the folder. So far everything works fine. No difference. Didn't come back.

if its an app that's installed now, it wont come back until its used. so give it a full day or two, just in case.
Do you use ES File Explorer? I got that folder after downloading ES on my phone.

Don't know than. I know its used for cache files in some way. Other than that, I have no clue.
I have it too, never noticed it before. Only shows up in ES, not on the PC. Strange...
Have you installed wechat, I know that creates the folder on my device.

Nope. I literally have a select few apps on my phone
Is there any app which provides details as which folders are created by which apps? AFAIK sdmaid can remove folders associated with apps but it won't show which folders are related to a particualar app. Might be useful before deleting any folder.
Even I had that baidu folder.. I deleted it just now.. No idea which app created it
A Google search returns that it's competing google when it comes to search engines..
