Gaming experience on XOOM - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all!
First let me say that I searched and couldn't find any similar topic so excuse me if there's any! It might be my eyes :cyclops:
Ok so I am really considering to buy a XOOM, and I've done some good search about it and i like it! But what i couldn't really know about is the gaming experience!
Since the tab is a bit old now running with the first dual cores generation; i'm afraid that it might not run the new games in a good way!
By that i mean new games like batman, spiderman, asphalt 7, MW3 (bit old), FIFA 2012, 9mm, dead space, nova 3, etc... and all those power hungry games!
Can anyone share with me/us his experience!
And please you are welcomed to open a gaming experience conversation too in this thread so we can all share it together!
Thank you!
PS: I mean real gaming experience, lags, FPS, etc... and not games compatibility!

Don't worry, you'll find on android 80 % of games that are on iOS, and exclusivities also
Moved from 3GS to the XOOM and I downloaded back nearly all the games I had on the 3GS

Gaming on the Xoom is an extremely pleasant experience. All those *new* games work very well and the 10.1 inch screen makes it fun to game.

Asphalt and dead space run fine.
Some minor slow downs on asphalt, but nothing that hinders game play. Haven't tested dead space too much yet.

Asphalt has random slowdowns on most devices, its due to the software, look at reviews for the app and a bunch of people are complaining of lag. Its up to Gameloft to fix the lag.

Do you know what devices have trouble with Asphalt 7? It's like night and day switching between my Xoom and Galaxy Nexus with that game.

My galaxy nexus runs asphalt without a hitch, my Xoom occasionally laggs but nothing to be concerned about.

All games u mentioned works fine without any sort of lagg on Team EOS 2.0.0 ICS, best custom rom for XOOM hands down :good:
Best game now is counter strike!

Waiting for stable version aka 3.0.0

Running at eos build 129, it is stable as hell, n no lags in any game when cpu is set to 312-1400, interactive

My Sim City doesn't work on JB though. It randomly hangs after a while.

Xoom is the best android gaming experience I had. But don't forget you can always overclock
Sent from my Nexus 7 running Froyo.

Are you considering to buy a Xoom or Xoom 2?
The Xoom is quite heavy which in my opinion lowers the game quality for some games. I don't know about the weight of Xoom 2 but there are a lot of new tablets of many manufacturers and the prices will decrease a lot. In 6 or 12 months tablets in general will be much cheaper, also the release price for new models will. Prices for used Xoom 1 will be extremely low this year around/after Christmas.
Especially for gaming consider the weight of a tablet!
Anyway good games are Six Guns and Dungeon Defenders (but they are also good on other devices).
Have fun!

The weight doesn't bother me, you get used to it.

the whole concept of Asphalt 5 is just awesome. Love the cars (and bikes!) and the tracks... unfortunately it lags way too much on N1
I hope they work on it... heard it has just been ported from iPhone, so it needs some serious tweaking for N1...

Definately Asphalt 5 version 3.0.8
Running smooth in Nexus One CM 5.0.5.3 with OCed - UVed: -1.113Ghz - 8MB extra ram + Neon Simb.
If you facing a strong lagging, that is due to version 3.0.7, version 3.0.8 fixed a lot and perform much much more better than previous version.

i have 3.0.8 installed and it still lags hell in certain turns and with heavy traffic.
i am not ready to install a kernel with >1Ghz etc.
Very honestly the devs should get the app optimized for Nexus One.
It isn't enough to port a game from one phone (iPhone) to another (Nexus) without platform-specific tweaks and optimizations --- it may be good enough for those that like to push their CPU to the limits, but it's just not working for those with stock phones.
Raging Thunder 2 works smooth enough - so Asphalt 5 could do too, if the devs just wanted it to...
besides... Asphalt 5 is 6.99 US$... a lot of money for a game that currently requires your processor to run over 1Ghz, and RAM tweaks...
that's just a deal-breaker.
I keep it installed and wait patiently for the devs to provide an update

I completely agree. The Devs even admitted this issue and yet there latest release 3.0.8 is barely what I would call a fix. My wife has an iPhone and it definitely is awesome on that. Unfortunately the N1 has different hardware. Just another way for devs to make a cheap buck.

I agree Asphalt 5 still need some tweaking, as it still running smoother in Motorola Milestone than Nexus One.
And come on please don't compared with iPhone, iPhone only 320 resolution but Nexus One is 800 resolution. Nexus One is nearly twice the resolution of iPhone.
HRB 3d is the best
+1 for homerun battle 3d.. i'm kinda addicted to that game. if you check their site, their releasing a 3d rpg which should be sick.

we are not comparing N1 with iPhone --- we are pointing out that the game was simply ported and not tweaked with N1 in mind - i call that lazy programming!
what good is it if N1 has 800 resolution, and iPhone only 320 if the same game runs crappy on the first, and great on the second?
N1 is awesome - the programmers have to do their job properly - especially since they charge 6.99$ for it. period

From what I understand the Motorola Milestone has a dedicated GPU to handle graphics whereas the Nexus One has not, so even if the Snapdragon is faster than the Droid/Milestone's CPU, as far as 3D graphics are concerned the N1 will never do as good as a Milestone.
The game could be "tweaked" to lower the graphic details though, I don't see the point of releasing a game that only one phone on the market will run decently :-/

S4 optimized games for ONE X

Since, i find all over the internet all HTC One X games optimized for Tegra 3, there is no such thing as for our S4 Chipset.
If you guys find any list it here, maybe we can continue this thread as a list of S4 optimized games for ONE X.
List of HD games that are working, not s4 exclusive though, shows off some graphical power of your HOX
Shine Runner
Riptide
Fruit Ninja PiB
Inertia: Escape Velocity HD
Samurai Vengeance II
Cordy
Sleepy Jack
NBA Jam
Sega Virtua Tennis
Shadowgun
Cut the Rope HD
Where is my water
I suppose the obvious title would be Shadowgun, which does look downright impressive on even with the non-Tegra 3 version, but here are a few other games I've been playing a bit on my One X:
Inertia: Escape Velocity HD Really awesome platformer, looks good and plays great on the One X. My only complaint is that even after paying $3.99 for the "full" HD version, there are still level packs to buy in the game! Lame! Still, a very awesome game and there is also a free/"lite" version if you don't want to shell out a few bucks for the so called "full" version.
Samurai Vengeance II This game is a bit older, but I'm just finally getting around to playing it. There is a THD version for Tegra2 devices, but the "standard" version looks awesome on the One X. I really don't see how a Tegra version could look any better. Pretty fun gameplay too.
Cordy Looks and runs great on the One X. Performance wasn't quite there when I tried playing on my Captivate, but it's a lot of fun on the One X with the really fluid performance.
Sleepy Jack From the same developers as Cordy. A shooter-on-rails of sorts.
I really am impressed with the quality of the gaming experience on mobile phones these days. Just a few years ago, I never would have imagined we'd be playing such awesome, and relatively sophisticated, games and yet here we are - the hardware capabilities are just growing exponentially.
Haven't had any problems with Sega Virtua Tennis and NBA Jam.

Thanks all. Added to the list of games working. Cordy is beautiful btw
Totally lagging!
Hey guys, my AT&T One X seems to lag quite a bit during games. Does this happen to you?
In Cordy, it will drop a few frames, making the movement barely fluid.
In Temple Run, it will often freeze, in game, to where I lose!
In Osmos, It will drop frames badly!
What is the deal here! Antutu and quadrant show this phone kicking arse. But I have NOT been impressed with the crappy Adreno GPU!
Does any one else know what I am talking about? Does this just have to do with optimization?
MX player won't work in HW rendering at all! Software rendering is sooo slow and buggy! What is happening????

if you are not playing a MP4 file, MX player obviously cannot enter HW acceleration....
talking about the adreno...it actually served me well...720p mkv with .ass subtile runs just fine in MX player, and for games like shadowgun and NFS hot persuit it has performed flawlessly....I'm running a rogers device, so I don't know what AT&T did to their phones.
At&t didn't do anything besides add bloat that is easily disabled. My phone runs great with every game you mentioned. There was a point in which my main homescreen page was so choppy it was unbearable. I removed the weather widget, rebooted and noticed there was a gallery icon that was somehow hidden behind the weather widget. Removed it, re added the widget, everything is peachy keen again.

Is it worth it

Hi all i wont to buy Galaxy Note 10.1 and i wont to ask is it worth it i am a gamer and i wont to play this HD games and Order and Chaos can it hold it on high graph.. and what is bad and good in this Galaxy Note 10.1
If you are mostly interested in playing games then I'd look at other tabs...
The main feature of the Note 10.1 is the s-pen. It is good for school work and business but if you want to play HD games there are other cheaper alternatives....
I use mine to watch video's and movies too and find no problem but utilise the s-pen for a variety of things. If I didn't need the s-pen and the phone functions then I would have looked at cheaper alternatives..

I would recommend going to a Best Buy if there is one near you and comparing the Note 10.1 to other tablets. The Note 10.1 is undoubtedly an awesome tablet! I considered buying one myself for a while. I have also considered a Nexus 10, as it's another great choice! With that said, I chose the Asus Infinity over the Note 10.1. I bought it before the Nexus 10 came out, but considered buying the Nexus 10 as well, and then possibly selling my Asus Infinity. I did my research on the two, and chose not to get the Nexus 10. I'm very happy with my Infinity!! I had the Asus Prime before the Infinity, and I feel like Asus makes outstanding tablets! Asus makes awesome phones too for that matter. I actually wish Sprint offered the Asus PadFone 2, as that would no doubt be my current phone!! Asus is also among the first, if not the first, manufacturers to release software updates for their products! The display on the Infinity is full HD and absolutely gorgeous! Not I, or anyone else, can tell you what tablet to get, only you can decide what tablet suits you the best! Just make sure to do your research on them first to see what's gonna work best for you. Check out YouTube videos as well! Also, if flashing is something your gonna be doing, be sure to check out their forums here on XDA and see which developers are cooking for which devices. See what rom and kernel options are out there, as well as themes and mods. Just all boils down to what your needs are, what your wants are, and what you will ultimately using the device for! Either way, good luck with your decision, and I hope you enjoy whatever you get!!
EDIT: FOR GAMING: I can tell you first hand that the Infinity is a beast!! Dead Trigger with the Sixaxis app and a PS3 controller is awesome(just to name 1 game, which is my favorite)!! Even though I have an XBOX 360 and a PS3, I often hook up my Infinity with its HDMI port built in to the side of the tablet, and play on my 55" Sony LED TV! It's absolutely amazing!! If anyone walks in the room, they never believe that I'm playing from my tablet and not a console!! I play Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, Horn, ShadowGun THD, ShadowGun: DeadZone, Modern Combat 4, Max Payne, NOVA 3, Asphalt 7, Need For Speed Most Wanted, Sonic 4 THD, Beach Buggy Blitz, Shine Runner, and on and on, etc. etc. They all look and play amazingly well on the Infinity!! I don't even play Most Wanted on my Evo LTE anymore, only on my Infinity! I expected the tilt steering to be awkward and cumbersome on a 10" tablet compared to my 4.7" Evo LTE, and just assumed I would use the touch screen for steering. I was pleasantly surprised when I first tried it and found that tilt steering was actually better on my tablet than on my phone!!

I had an Asus Infinity and hated the thing, the lag was unbearable, and that was running a custom rom which was an improvement. Gaming was good, and the hdmi out was a plus but not used very much. Also there are some games that are not compatible with it due to resolution. The note although lower resolution is so much snappier. I would definitely not recommend any of the Asus tablets.
In total agreement, I will never purchase another Asus tablet. The Prime was the worst technology buying experience I have ever had. Never again...NEVER!

I don't think the tablet being too weak for games would be correct. This tablet has the cpu/gpu to run them. There is something else that is keeping games from having full compatibility or smoothness with this tablet. You can search and find theories from game developers being too lazy to properly code or there being an underlining issue with Tegra3 chips that Nvidia never addressed but was supposedly working on a patch for. More likely it's the high resolution of the screen which we all ready know causes a performance hit. I don't see that as being week since it is giving us a beautiful picture when using the tablet for various tasks. For those running a custom rom, is there the option to lower the resolution of the screen for extra performance?
To the original poster, not make it sound like you don't know what your tablet is doing, but are you running anything in the background or accidentally have battery saver set? I will try downloading this game and see what I get performance wise. I'm running a fresh stock install of 4.1 firmware.
----------
No problems for me running the game on stock firmware 4.1. Ran it in both performance and balanced mode.
Also im on cromi-x 4.5 with hunds 3.0.6 kernel today, running close to smooth with hunds kernel app that sets the cpu/gpu for games. Sadly i cant run the game on medium setting because the app wont save the settings after game relaunches
Edit: got it to change

I stated that the tf700 is too weak for this game.
I agree that the tf700 has got the potential to be a game perfomer, but unfortunately it ain't.
You elaborated the reasons for this and I think you're right.
Yet, we are not living in theories but in reality where game developers skip our device
(I tried to address some of them asking for a fix, but to no avail).
Here is an example of a correspondence I had with Get Set games inc.:
"Dear Dev,
My almost 2 year old daughter is mad about Mega Run (which she keep calling "Monkey Circles").
I am an old fan of Mega Run and Mega Jump too.
The issue is that the game's graphics are not optimised for the 10 inch screen of the Asus Infinity (TF700).
Therefore the graphics are a bit blurry.
I would appreciate it if you could help me find a solution for what I have described,
or maybe issue a version that will be optimised for our tf700's screen.
Hope my request will be considered since as I have written, we love your application.
Thanks with advance and keep up the good work.

Thanks for getting in contact with us and for the feedback. It is great to hear that you and your daughter have been enjoying Mega Run. We have just release Mega Run on Android, and with that release we chose to only have one set of graphics at a medium/high resolution. The reason we chose to do this is that most Android devices fit this resolution very well. In the future, we hope to have higher resolution graphics for tablets such as the Asus Infinity.
Sorry for the inconvenience,
Mike"
IMHO - this is not a standard machine... I should have learned this sooner (before I purchased it).
Anyways, the TF700 has it's strong areas: great device for playing all kinds of media and even some games.
The mSD slot is awesome and all in all I enjoy it.
It runs fairly well, actually. Frankly, it runs smoother than Skyrim ever did on my PC. (That game used to literally freeze every 2 steps to re-render the scene. Crappy coding from Bethesda... As per bloody usual.)

Sorry for the inconvenience,
Mike"

You could've known the game would be blurry. Games are made with the 'hyped' devices in mind: The Galaxy Tab and the Galaxy S3. Which both run 1280x800, as opposed to 'our' 1920x1200.. (Quite a significant size increase.)
Anything with a higher resolution is a HD version, and specifically has HD listed behind it. ('Angry Birds HD'.)
Give it +-six months. Then, the SGS4 and the Note 3 will be the top devices alongside the HTC One and the potential new Nexus. And developers will have no other choice but to finally make games and apps in HD.

It runs fairly well, actually. Frankly, it runs smoother than Skyrim ever did on my PC. (That game used to literally freeze every 2 steps to re-render the scene. Crappy coding from Bethesda... As per bloody usual.)

I agree with you that eventually 1920x1080 will be a common resolution for Android devices, but I still believe Tegra 3 is too weak to run those games at full HD resolution (all Full HD devices I know have either a Snapdragon S4 Pro or Snapdragon 600 to power that many pixels). I have seen quite a few games that lag miserably on my tf700, even if it is optimized for Tegra. Example, Beach Buggy Blitz (running at max setting of this game is a big no-no on my tf700).
As for Skyrim, I really have no complaint about frame drop and stuttering, it runs quite smoothly on my laptop. Nevertheless, given the diversity of PC hardware, it could just be that I was lucky to have fully compatible hardware.
I don't agree : Dungeon Hunter 4 is very laggy on my tab and i am not playing that game anymore due to that issue. But i have played many hours to The Bard's Tale and it worked nearly perfectly (it would lag only when a lot of characters and huge effects, that means about 10 seconds every 4 hours) and bard's tale is imo more beautiful than dh4 and still it was developed in 2012 when hd screens were very rare. So imo the dh4 lag issue comes from poor design and programming.

It's primarily the I/O issue, not the Tegra 3.
The problem is that games are optimized for snapdragons because that's what the hyped, common-cattle owned devices (SGS3/4 & GT2) run.
SoulCraft THD: Perfectly.
SHADOWGUN THD: Perfectly.
Samurai II: Vengeance THD: Perfectly.
Puddle THD: Perfectly.
Zombie Driver THD: Perfectly.
Renaissance Blood THD: Runs well.
The Bard's Tale: Fine.
N.O.V.A. 3: Some issue with green images in main menu/intro, Game itself runs fine.
So no, it's not the Tegra 3. It's lazy developers and crap engines.
As for Skyrim, I really have no complaint about frame drop and stuttering, it runs quite smoothly on my laptop. Nevertheless, given the diversity of PC hardware, it could just be that I was lucky to have fully compatible hardware.

It's since been fixed in the patches. The issue occured during the first 3 updates (including vanilla base.). At one point I had backwards flying dragons that spun around breathing fire in mid air and stopped every few seconds as the game froze and unfroze  The engine Skyrim runs on is 12 years old, and instead of using a clean version they retasked the Fallout one with all the coding still cluttering it.
The main fault in this tablet is the i/o. Everything else is perfectly big enough to run the screen. With such crappy i/o, the tablet cannot cache applications at a rate needed, especially for files made for Full HD screens. This can be solved with a B2R tpye script or Data2SD. With Data2SD, even on a pretty cheap card, the tablet runs much much smoother. This is why the browser on stock runs so terribly. The internal i/o cant cache it fast enough. So, the Tega 3 is more then enough of power, but the problem is the i/o, which can only even start to be tweaked by unlocking/rooting, but even then there is no fix.

GPU performance has nothing to do with I/O.
I/O is slow for random writes, yes - but games usually don't write a lot to storage. The GPU is slow because it is simply not very powerful. See here:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6036/asus-transformer-pad-infinity-tf700t-review/4
With good programming, it can drive the full HD screen with acceptable framerate (see Epic Citadel), but apparently not every engine is so well optimized.

I notice the Nook HD+ that also has a 1080p display seems to play games smoother than the 700. Performance is about in between the 700 and 300, with the 300 being better overall.
The 4470 gpu is more robust for higher def displays and has dual channel memory, but a dual core. I would have expected the net result to be a wash, but does seem the dual channel memory might be the difference.
For game emulators though that are cpu heavy like MAMEreloaded, the Nook is a little faster. Gets hot in the bottom right corner though.
horrible
Yeah i tried this game. Changed graphics settings in game to lowest and had performance mode on and it still lagged like crazy. Not really my kind of game to begin with so it didn't upset me too badly, but i would have expected more from such a high end tablet.
I have uninstalled the game today : too laggy and i still believe that its code is bad (bard's tale is so much smoother on my same tab)

I know this is a bit of an old thread, I just not stumbled upon it. I've been using cromi-x for quite some time, and on earlier versions I didn't have much issue until I got into higher levels where more monsters generated, then it would lag briefly and go back to normal. As of lately I haven't even been able to play the game. I've played a few other games that seem to have similar features and get zero lag. Though I'm not a coder or developer, I feel that this is a issue with the game itself combined with i/o limitations of our tablet. SDBags has done some amazing work on his rom. I've tried all sorts of kernel and tweak combinations, none of which seem to correct the issue. To make the issue worse I was level 42 and lost my entire game and $40 worth of purchases that gameloft has yet to refund me. That, of course doesn't have anything to do with the laggy issue. I thought I would bump the thread to see if anyone else has come up with anything.

[Q] Does Dead Trigger lag only for me? o.O

Hello guys i am new to XDA and i have just a question in mind......
Before purchasing my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 i saw some gaming reviews as i am a gamer and games like Dead Trigger [My Fav.] and MC4 did not lag at all but when i finally purchased it Dead Trigger showed noticeable but negligible lag. I did not expect lag from this! Am i the only one? Need help guys
Info:-
Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 GT-P3100
Rooted
No custom ROM installed!
All dead?
All dead?
The graphic really lagging. So just play with Note
No lag at all with mine.
Even when I was in stock 4.0.3 I used to play MC4 and Deadtrigger just fine. The auto-graphic was set to low, but I manually changed to high and also didn't have any problem with lag.

Our SGT2 7.0's family tab doesn't "lag" unless if I'm changing guns. Its the same with my iPad
(All on High graphics setting). The zombie in the black suit/jacket spits out a ball with blood on the iPad version whereas its only blood on Android.
It was smooth at low graphics!

It was though smooth on low graphics but i want to play with high graphics. Will installing a custom ROM help me?
The lag is negligible but it irritates me
If i had a good pocket i could get a Note for me

Custom Roms do help but have you tried Samsung's 4.1.2 yet? I don't have negligible lags on it but changing guns.
You should have gotten the Nexus 7, its round about the same price but a lot more fragile.
Doesn't have negligible lags even while changing guns unless graphics is on Tegra 3 settings (pity)
