Today after fully charging my phone I took it off charge and i set my brightness low and after 1 hour of playing asphalt 6 I checked my battery stats and it showed that the screen has used 87% of battery whereas asphalt 6 and wifi only had drained 8% of battery. I'm using 1730mah battery and I want to find out the battery usage other people are having after playing 1 hour of game
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using xda premium
If screen dont drain any battery than we could play 10hours of asphalt 6 non stop while we still have 16% of battery left. Beside I know that impossible but still I'm sure there must be a way to stop high screen battery drain

I believe the only way without buying a new battery, is to reduce the screen brightness
Its a well known fact that Our Screen need more juice and is the biggest drainer of battery.......Try keeping brightness under 30 or buy an Anker battery.
I did keep my brightness to the low because it was night time and still it showed that screen drained my battery a lot I don't know what would have happened if I kept my brightness full

Bright or not the screen (specifically the backlight) will always be the biggest power consumer on the phone. There is no way around this.

well i got an sensation too with viper rom frmo the venom team and after the update i recognize a much harder battery drain than before but all apps are the same so dont know why and no one else is experiecing something like this :S
The biggest drain on the battery is the screen and the back light for the screen. I've noticed a significant improvement by disabling auto brightness (this is controlled by the kernel and rom parameters) and just setting brightness manually.

Hello fellow users
My gf got herself a desire s today and i installed battery monitor on it and saw that the device have a drain of 14-18ma with screen off
I have a desire hd and got a drain of 3-5ma with my screen off
Is this because i have a custom kernel?
I sometimes have this with my dhd and when i whipe dalvik its cleared again to 3-5ma
Can you guys check how much drain you have with screen off?

14mA with WiFi always on and 2 Exchange accounts syncing every 5 minutes plus GMail account syncing constantly.
You might take all background syncing processes under consideration. Also bad wireless reception may cause higher currents.

Download an App Killer, they are probably just staying in the background and eating the battery.

this is what i was curious about. my nexus one gets between 3-5mA of idle current draw during the night with wifi on. but the thunderbolt for example, with the Sense UI ROM, has some weird problem where the current is 34mA idle on stock ROM, and that is what everyone is seeing. i collected 7 days worth of current widget data from TWO units, both identical results.
so is the new desire s something to do related to the new sense UI? or is the thunderbolt just a fluke? 18mA is too high for idle. and especially since the new HTC inspire i've gotten it to 1mA during idle at times, which is mind blowing. so i always attributed that to the new snapdragon efficiency. i was hoping the desire s would be even better, and get superb battery life with 1450mAh battery and normal sized screen at 3.7".
please post more results when you can!

Currentwidget and Battery monitor widget logs that the phone use around 20 mA (8 hours log) whit the screen off.
and after 8 hours the battery is drained from 1450 mAh to 1435 mAh.
This is just not possible whit a steady use of 20 mA
1 hour of 20 mA = 20mAh and after 8 hour it needs to be 160mAh

How did you measure it ? Something must be wrong : the battery drainage or the battery use. In the best case you have battery use about 2mA and that's just awesome. If it's not the case you just drained 160mAh as you say it should be. Hope that it's the be first one.
Yeah I just figured it was a typo or mis read his mAh, I can't see any other answer. I would do another over night test and try to confirm.

I did logged whit Currentwidget and Battery monitor widget. And i did calculated the 160 mAh on my own.
The widgets both say that the device use 20 mA messured every 60 sec. After a hour that will be 20 mAh and 8 Hours it will be 160 mAh (8*20mAH=160mAh)
But Battery monitor widget olso did says that my battery is drained from 1450 to 1435 after 8 hours. ( I started whit a full battery)
Last night over 8 hours the device used about 1%=14.5 mAh
2011/04/17|01:27:28|-23mA|68%|3917mV|29.3ºC
2011/04/17|09:27:28|-20mA|67%|3902mV|20.8ºC
I wonder why the desire s gets such high current drain. The original desire, and my nexus one, get 6 mA during idle screen off.
After some days of BatteryMonitor logging I can say, that the current with screen off never drops below 14mA. Often it's even higher (over 30mA).
The Gingerbread on board battery consumption overview shows Maps as a major consumer. Even if I never used the Maps application since the last complete battery charge, it is there as one of the most bat drainers. I have the feeling that it's this behaviour after updating Maps from the shipped 5.2 to the current 5.3.1
But that's OT. The battery drain is too high even without the Maps app.
normal idle screen off should never be higher than 6 mah.....
so what the hell is up with this thing :O ?
i'm experiencing the same issue too
i was experiencing some horrific battery time also, like 30% drain in 7 hours screen off while my iphone only drained 7% in that time. I believe the culprit could possibly be the "use best wifi performance" button coupled with wifi not sleeping.
Ive now turned off "best wifi performance " and set wifi sleep to 15 minutes and im now getting 18-22mA - i understand this is still bad - i cant spot any other apps using battery.
Will update again later today.
All feed back and information appreciated and we all appear in the same boat.
Although I have wifi turned off during the day and still get battery drain
Thanks

And change back to the Sensation battery, it's actually better than the 3Ds. The Evo guys are using the Sensation battery and getting about 2hrs more in back to back tests. Be happy you don't have a 3D. When I had mine, I got 2hrs hard use with 4G and 4hrs with 3g. I get 8hrs with my Sensation overclocked.

Well for starters, your screen was on for almost 2 hours straight and your signal wasn't very good for most of that. I can assume that since your screen was on for 2 hours straight you must have been using it or the screen would not have been on that long. Streaming a 2 hour movie on a not so great connection will eat your battery up almost completely, especially if you are using full brightness. Android phones in general are battery eaters. My Sensation battery life is actually a lot better than my Vibrant was so I'm happy. Buy a couple batteries on Ebay for 15 bucks or use Juice Defender. I use my phone pretty heavily and can make it through the day. I can get over 24 hours using Juice Defender.
Did You wipe battery stats after change battery?
Also tell us which ROM and Kernel You use now. I'm sure that 3/4 ROM's here are useless. I have ROM from new leak and have 0 issues, also with battery.
I got two Anker 1900mAh batteries and they made a reasonable improvement to my use.
Typically with full sync and okish signal I got about 1h40m of screen on time with about 14 hours off charger.
With Anker under the same daily use its between 2h to 3h screen on in the same period.
Also that means I now have three batteries.
Sorry to say but having owned a Motorola Milestone, Galaxy S, Nexus S and now Sensation I can simply say that the battery life on Android is crap in general for heavy users.
My girl has an iPhone 3G and 4, the screen on time is often over 6 hours which I put down to intimate development of software and hardware.
I am choosing flexibility over longevity for now.

It's the kernel that's in the version of the ROM you have.
Flash 3.6.5 XE and it'll fix the problem.
Also having Wifi on and using it for 2 hours straight will drain your battery.

Did you calibrate or change radios recently? You could have a defective battery(s) or maybe the kernel is causing excessive drain.
I noticed this issue too when I was using Sense-based ROMs before I switched to a CM7-based rom.
Been off battery for 9 hours and 9 minutes with 77% left - I've never seen battery life this great and I don't think I see myself going back to Sense any time soon for my HTC Sensation 4G.
I was very disapointed with how fast the stock HTC Sensation battery drained even with normal use, just like you.
I took the advise from some here and got the Anker battery from Ebay for 10.00.
The best thing I ever did.
WOW! Did it improve the battery life on the Sensation.
Now I do not have to worry about the battery draining down fast on me.
With the Anker battery, my phone lasts all day and into the night .

Probably it's time to try this! extended battery can be a solution.
I have been using my Sensation for a 3 months now and have noticed the idle battery usage very high and barely get through the day without touching my phone. Well that's probably my own fault for having this and that syncing and downloading all the time. And my suspicions were correct, because when I turn data and WiFi off the battery could last forever. Understandable.
What really bothers me is that when screen is on the juice just disappears. It's just 2 to 2,5 hours of screen being on (web browsing, playing games etc.) to make the battery completely dead. This is pretty much my first actual smartphone and I understand that such a big screen takes it's toll, but is that normal?
I have the AUO screen.

Sounds about right to me. Have never used my screen for two hours straight, but I'm at 36% for about an hour and thirty minutes of screen being on with an Anker battery.
Regarding the syncing, you could probably try juice defense and see if that helps you any.

Hi,
There has been a lot of talk about poor battery life, and it is mostly attributable to the kernel.
My best suggestion is to update your kernel to:
1.Faux's latest...in my sig
2.Bricked 1.41r has had good reviews...HERE
Make a nandroid backup,
wipe cache and dalvik,
flash kernel,like a ROM,
reboot.
Also, try guide from my signature.. It helped me
How much difference does it make battery wise whether you're e.g browsing the internet or playing graphically demanding games?
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
I have an original sensation and since buying it have struggled to contain battery life as I am a heavy user.
Typically I travel for an hour and a half each way to work. It's an ideal time to catch up on mail, twitter, browsing etc.
I have been looking into the drain on the battery and discovered that;
80% of battery drain is attributed to running the display
32 minutes of the display being on equates to 40% of the battery
Best case, I would only get ~100 minutes screen on time.
From what I have read this is done to the display type in the Sensation. Is this correct?
I have tried switching the brightness way down (15%) and switching background colors to blacks.
Is there any fix for this or have I simply bought the wrong phone?
I nearly went for the S2 but preferred the clarity of the Sensation display...
Sent from my HTC Sensation
You have the same problem as me there isn't much we can do about it. Is a smart phone it will drain battery like mad when used no matter if it's moderate or heavy because if u ure it moderate it still lol my battery very fast
Sent from my HTC Sensation using xda premium
The question is I suppose, Does the screen type on the Sensation deliver poorer battery performance than other handsets?
Would I get more 'screen on' time by switching to an S2 or Galaxy Nexus?
I get around 3-3.5 hours screen on time on a heavy use day. That equates to about 10 hours off the charger, so just enough to keep be going til i get home.
I usually just set the brightness to auto, but if I know I'm going to be reading/browsing a lot I turn the brightness down to about 30%
I'm currently running stock rooted because the sense 3.5 roms were too buggy.
No complaints about battery here.
Maybe you could upload a battery usage graph screenshot?
Here are some.....
Cheers
Wow! That is some impressive drain.
Have you got any programs that might be causing the drain? Your phone seems to be awake a lot even when the screen is off.

The screen is not AMOLED, its an LCD so black backgrounds are not beneficial, if anything white/light uses less power as the LCD does not have to use power to black out the (always on) backlight.
I'm running Virtuous Sensation rom, OC at 1.5g, been my phone has been off the charger 7÷hours, made 2 long phone calls, been been browsing web and I'm here for around 3 hours now, and my battery is around 60%. I love this rom, fast, stable, and excellent battery life.

Make sure your brightness isn't to high. It will drain extremely fast with high brightness. I keep mine on 0% for inside and will up it up some when I go outside.
I bought the Anker extended battery for $15. Here are a couple screen shots of my usage...
I didnt charge it at all for that entire time. On the graph where it says the battery went up about 5% is from rebooting it.
Was just wondering if anyone else had experienced random heating up from the sensation and perhaps managed to pinpoint its cause?
The reason I am so confused is because it doesn't do it all the time so its not that the phone just runs hot, the other day I was playing gta 3 for an hour and the phone was barely warm and now as I type this after some casual web browsing out and about its getting so I can barely touch the bottom of the phone, I saw someone mention something to do with mobile data causing more heat than Wi-Fi which could be the case for my example but can anyone shed anymore light on the issue?

Yes for me when I was using a stock BATTERY I would experience this quite often.sometimes my device would get so hot I could barely touch it. I was actually in fear of melting my SD card! I solved my problem by purchasing a long lasting battery called Anker. My device has never done that since the battery has been installed! Sometimes if I'm playing a intense game I'll get some warmth but Nothing like what was happening before. Before the battery change I could barely even touch my device it was so hot ! The Anker battery solved the problem for me and gave me much more battery time! It was a win win situation, no more overheating and more battery time! That's what worked for me. Hope this helps you out.

My device got some warmth but not that blazing hot. My guess is that you using mobile data a lot without giving it a rest. I'm using the stock battery but it seems quite ok. But sometimes I play HD games and my sensation turns really hot but i could still hold that
Sent from my HTC Sensation XE using xda premium
I often get decently hot even with my anker battery, but I usually just ignore it and it goes away, I would use "battery indicator" from the play store to see what your battery temp really is, because my phone has felt hot before even though the battery itself was at a fine temperature. If its the battery then think about getting a new battery, but if it isn't then there no reason.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using xda app-developers app
For me my problem was definitely the battery, ! My battery also was giving me only two hours then complete drain. Each issue can be different. But new battery solved the over heat problem for me but I'm certain -my battery was defective.

I'm using anker batteries and after some more testing I've found that it is related to mobile data, after playing games such as Max Payne, gta 3, and minecraft all pretty demanding for a few hours the phone got no more than slightly warm and then I turned mobile data and syncing on checked emails and Facebook etc and the bottom of the phone near the buttons got very hot even after like ten mins, pretty weird.

Constant data usage causes it to heat up. But I also UV'd my phone, which only exacerbated the problem. Once I removed the UV, the heat issue was nowhere near as bad.

i think common ics build problem.
htc have to release some about heating phone.
i go back to gingerbread. it is little heating phone.
i recommend to gingerbread.
The phone gets so hot due to a bad layout on the motherboard, even with an Anker battery I have actually burnt my thumb tip on bottom of the screen.
One way to help the problem is by getting an Anker battery, the only problem with these is they do not have a built in temperature sensor as it was removed to expand battery capacity. So any temperature app will say approx 25.2'c
After some researching I found that the app System Tuner can read CPU temps in realtime, get Pro and the CPU Temp icon pack and you can have alerts that are fully customizable.
