Unable To Mount SD Card via TWRP - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have had my Nexus S 4g rooted for sometime and have flashed many roms, so I'm not a complete nooby... but for some reason I'm stumped right now.
I woke up this morning to my phone in the TWRP recovery thing and I just tried to restart my phone but it wouldn't boot up so I figured I would just restore to a previous ROM and all of my backups were just gone. This is the error I have: error opening /sdcard/TWRP/BACKUPS/randomcharacters
But that was way at the bottom, above it I see all these notifications saying that nothing is mounting... so I go and wipe all my stuff to try to re-install the ROM I already had because it had been working very nice and it was just gone. Couldn't find it at all so I figure ok... let's just mount it and put the ROM on my phone... but when I try that my computer tells me that I need to insert a disk into the removable disc.
So right now I really have no clue what to do and I can't use the one click stock since I can't get to my phone to turn on USB debugging.
Any help?
Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere but I was unable to find anything similar.

And I have tried unrooting using this site:
nexusshacks. com/nexus-s-4g-hacks/how-to-unroot-nexus-s-4g/
However, it doesn't work after "fastboot flash system system.img"

And when I go look at the log thing in TWRP I get this:
*Verifying filesystems...
*Verifying partition sizes...
E: Unable to mount /system
(x20 with different things!)
E:failed to mount /sdcard (No such file or directory)
Gah! Have no idea how this happened!!

Can you go into fastboot? I would try to fastboot flash recovery, flash CWM and start from there. If it still wouldn't work i would presume that either your NAND went bad or that somehow the partitions got screwed... I do remember something similar happening to me on my wife's SGS and the solution was a Odin flash of a stock ROM to restore the partitions.

I can go into fastboot! That is the mode I'm in.
I am currently trying to unroot my device using the unroot guide from nexusshacks. com but I get a forever hang time when it is writing my system.
So I just flashed CWM but I am no sure what to do from here! I tried mounting sd card and usb but neither worked. However, I did see an option to format my sd card. Should I do that directly from CWM? And in the advanced menu I see an option to partition my sd card.
At this point I just want to have my phone back in working condition.

You can try to format the SD card, but i think it won't work... If it doesn't work try to search for Odin and the files to restore to stock ROM, maybe it can fix the partitions... The SD card partition option in CWM i never used, so i'm not sure what it does in this case.

So I tried the Odin and I'm still stuck in the writing system stage... I have no idea what to do at this point.

Seems your NAND reach its end. There's allot of topics regarding that problem with the Nexus S and every single one of them ended up with the OP sending the phone to Samsung or getting a new phone...

help me please . i try everything i know but can't solve it.
thanks
Use GTG's Unbrick to flash to stock.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116251
Afterwards check if you can access internal sd storage. That'll solve your software brick.
Did you try looking at the other 20+ posts in Q&A that everyone has responded to claiming they're bricked??
To get a little historic on you (thanks @nunhugger for that terminology) back in 2007 when your bricked your phone it was gone. Done. Paperweight. Your jailbreak messed up your iphone. DONE. ADIOS. GOODBYE. So.. Claiming that your phone is, "bricked" when in fact that's not the real definition, is wrong. What you have is a term that was coined, "soft brick" this has been bugging me for a while and your post just pushed me over..
In other words YOU'RE NOT BRICKED.

Since I've never used Heimdall or this "SGH-i997-UCKJ4-One-Click.jar" file you're talking about I can't give you advice on it. I can only give you advice on flashing Froyo and how to get back to stock. Are you able to access your internal sd storage from the official stock ROM using the My Files application? Can you see the internal SD storage when you go to SETTINGS -> SD CARD AND PHONE STORAGE?
From your initial post it sounds like you can no longer access your internal storage.

I am in what sounds like the same situation. Heimdalled my way there as well. There is a link in the Infuse Super Thread that brings youto a Heimdall One-Click by Adam Outler that includes CWM. I used that and got CWM back but it is having all kinds of mounting issues. Can't remember them all right now (at work). Definatly can't mount sdcard and definatly can't mount or format system as well. I think there's more. I propose we work through this together Top10. I'll be back with more details after work (several hours from now).
---------- Post added at 01:23 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:15 PM ----------
My situation is complicated by not hacing Odin (mac user).
I'll try to resurect my old PC laptop tonight but expectations are not high.
For the record top10: I got CWM back and mess with it for hours last night without any sucess. Only gatered more information about what else is not mounting. I can't get to 3e but can get to download mode. Reboot from CWM just reboots straight back to CWM (after Sumsung screen). What are the rest of your details? If we're in the same boat then we'll be twice as strong together.
twice as strong or sink twice as fast.
try reading this guys...a few times.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1437548
ps..dont worry too much about the mounting issue for now.

I fail at PIT for the whole package restore

Dozen,
If you are using, heimdall. you have to flash the uckj4 twice.
after the first flash, click the bootloader box and flash it again.
The second flash with boot loaders is where it fails.
From researching I am thinking that something is wrong with the partitions.
Right now every time I pull the battery and try to boot it goes to red CWM and says:
ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.3 - Voodoo lagfix
E:Can't mout /devblock/stl11
(File exists)
E:Can't mount CASHE:recovery/command
E:Can't mount /dev/block/stl11
(File exists)
E:Can't mount CASHE:recovery/log
E:Can't open CASHE:recovery/log
E:Can't mount /dev/bloc/stl11
(File exists)
Get similar errors in mounts and storage
Can't CWM restore
Reflashing zip from sdcard fails eventually too.
Actually reflashing zip goes very fast and reboots back into red CWM
The problems all began when a second flash with bootloaders failed.

can you flash a ROM.zip from red cwm?
that is where you should be after you flash the Defuse kernel.
the mount e: drive error is normal
It apparently works but seems way too fast.
Then reboot just goes back into red CWM.
Reboot ALWAYS goes back to red CWM even if I ask for reboot to download or just pull battery and try to boot normally.
Failing at flashing the bootloaders and not booting without them scares me.
I can still mount to USB so I could download other zips.
Perhaps I will try to Heimdall a different ROM (like stock) any suggestions?
hi everybody
i know about my problem.
i try put external microsd card 16gb (sandisk ) and flash this "SGH-I997_I997UCKL2_UC_ATT" by Odin. when my phone boot it try to load logo at&t.
reboot 2-3time and wooo can load to home screen.
i try to check everything have wrong. i get it . the big problem my internal sdcard can't mount or format. i don't know it damage or have software issue. i try to flash back Odin_UCKE3_v2 it can't solve this problem. i think it internal sdcard damage.
i don't know how to walk out this problem
thanks everybody to share and tell me
I am realizing that your problem is quite different than mine.
I thought we could work together but my problem is so different that I must go elsewhere to avoid hijacking your thread.
I wish you the best of luck.
I'm seeing exactly the same thing on my phone right now - I'm into day 2 of fighting it.
* Flashing GTG's ultimate unbrick stops on the 9th bar of factoryfs.rfs in Odin.
* Flashing Heimdall gets me a flashed kernel, followed by a reboot into CWM with the quoted output.
* I've run everything in CWM that says wipe or format with no effect.
* I've run everything in CWM that says restore.
* I've reinstalled the only ROM that I have on my sdcard (zeus).
* I've done several combinations of the above multiple times.
* I've done this on 2 different computers on every USB port possible.
I've read the entire thread of GTG's unbrick and have seen nothing that I haven't listed above.
I'm not saying I'm bricked here, but I am saying that I'm out of ideas.

a possible problem with GTG's unbrick stopping midway is a bad connection.
Try rebooting your pc. unload any other antivirus.
use a different data cable or hold the one you have well against the phone to ensure a good connection while ... flashing your package...

Will try a different cable tonight once i've booted from lunix.
For the record:
Rebooting and cold booting have had no effect.
I don't run antivirus software, I just find it's a solution that's worse than the problem.

I cant mount my SD card from recovery to my comp. help please?

what i had done was created a backup of the current rom i was using AOKP, to try another rom. i tried to restore back to AOKP using the back up but i kept on getting stuck in the unicorn bootup and it was just continually looping. I tried a few different things but still nothing worked.
I boot up into the bootloader and i accidentally did a factory reset from there and it wiped my entire sd card clean. so right now, im stuck without a working rom but i can still boot into TWRP recovery.
The very big problem right now is that i cannot mount the SD to my computer.
I kept getting this error as i was trying to restore to aokp too "E:failed to mount /sdcard (invalid argument)"
im not sure what is wrong with my sd card. it wont mount to my comp so i can transfer a rom there to flash. any help or ideas? thank you
Edit* i dont think twrp can read the SD. :'(

Factory reset will not wipe user data on the sd, you must have done something else. Relock the boot loader, reflash he relevant Ruu to go back to stock then start all over again

Try updating TWRP to 2.2.0
Download it, reboot device into the boot loader, go into fastboot using volume keys and power to select, rename the TWRP .img file to TWRP and put it into your ADB directory then fire up ADB and type "fastboot flash recovery TWRP.img" reboot then try to mount. If I were a betting man I'd guess it will fix it.

[Q] Desperately need working files to flash .. stuck after unlocking

So I unlocked this without much trouble, and then when I was attemoting to use adb to flash images to recovery partition, one would just not work, and I stupidly tried to force it, and now it boots and just sits there.
I've seen a different website saying the Q can run Jellybean, and it also has info on getting the stock rom back .. but NO files. I know how to use the damn recovery tools once theyre booted up - those articles were completely useless. I don;t know what else to do. I tried to get the files that argghhhh jad posted to dropbox but they are not available anymore.
Stuck and been trying to fix this for the last 12 hours
EDIT:
Found stock recovery stuff, but I dont think it's going to help any...
Nevermind I suppose
I see that I can try the stock rar file posted for someone else in here to put into recovery, hope it works, I just dont know if the nernel is ok, but I would think so. It stops at the "unlocked"notificaton screen. anyay, yeah. If I get jellybean on instead ill share the info,
I believe you need to fastboot your recovery, not adb. Then you may be able to flash something back on there.

Thanks for the repl! S I actually have been using fastboot because adb for some reason just will not see the device (I checked the version and its correct supposedly). So what I did was take the WWRP rar, pull the contants out and make them into a .zip.and instaled with fastboot flash. The output looked ok:
sending 'userdata' (319120 KB)... OKAY [ 29.814s]
writing 'userdata'... OKAY [ 92.421s]
finished. total time: 122.235s
but what about all the other partitions? I jad done system earlier frok out of the stock zipfile. i think i may just try the entire Stock file insead, or maybe I am missing the fact that I beed to install the kernek into /boot, Any thoughts Thanks much!
EDIT: first im going to fastboot the recovery wit tue TWRP zip file, and try to install it from

Then you can boot into recovery and flash one of the system dumps that these devs have generously posted for when we mess up like this...

Ok, the easiest way to get your phone up and running again is to push the newest TWRP from here, put it in your tools folder and push w fastboot:
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-asanti_c.img
fastboot reboot recovery
Make a backup to your external sd card so that TWRP creates the directory needed to restore the stock system & boot. You should delete this first backup later since it will be broken.
Then download a system & boot image from here, unzip to the /TWRP/BACKUPS/"serial#"/ folder on your external sd. Do full wipes for system, dalvik, & factory reset; then restore Stock from within TWRP. Should be good to go.
:edit:
Just saw that tetrabyt already hit on this, consider this post a more detailed revision.
i must be retardedly doing this the wrong way, i quickly get twrp into recovery and can get in there, and I have the stock photon .zip in 1 big zip and in separate pieces, but how do you get them to the external card.. windows 7 fails to recognize the phone with some message MTP device unknown so I can't transfer it that way ... I dont know. Im about to chuck this thing out the window and be done with it. The whole purpose was to be able to install apps to the sdcard, originally. Do you have an sd adapter or another device you can plug the sd into to transfer from your pc? Does adb fail when booted into TWRP also? Tried uninstalling/re-installing drivers?
Might be able to make a data img you could flash through fastboot, so long as the folder structure was correct... then use recovery from internal storage. Not certain on this: /data/media/sdcard/TWRP/BACKUP/"serial#"/
Maybe someone else can jump in here, this would be my last resort. Use any way possible to get it on external sd first.

Thanks a ton for the help Saint, and others. I finally got it back in working order .. yay! Now to install that powermenu update someone made, and see about making android 4 opeate like the older versions, where you could install apps onto the external SD card. Am I correct in assuming they just F'ed it up by changing the /mnt names, while the software was not updated to accomodate those changes? Why the hell is internal memory now "sdcard" ... so odd. I have a friend whose internal storage is named "USB storage" on his phone. It's USB accessible .. but its a freakin flash card. So odd, and stupid. I really felt like 4.0 was a downgrade, personally. What improved? I see nothing, only things taken away (Im sure the underlying scheduler and thread management/memory mgmt is better, but you know what I mean .. anything visible?)

I see nothing, only things taken away (Im sure the underlying scheduler and thread management/memory mgmt is better, but you know what I mean .. anything visible?)

Good to hear, glad you got her working again. As for how she runs, definitely snappier than older versions of android. Maybe just hardware, but I still see improvements w the wifes epic running ics, guessing that we will see better results once CM is dropped for this phone.

Tried this, still stuck on Bootloader Unlocked Screen. TWRP restores don't seem to work right. I tried restoring an old backup I had of the boot/recovery/system with no luck. Everytime I wiped system/dalvik/cache/factory reset before restore. No errors show up.
So, I can go into fastboot, and I can flash files.
I tried RSD Lite 5.7 with this Zip
It flashes everything until RSD wants me to reboot. Then it reboots and gets stuck on the bootloader unlocked screen.
Any ideas?
[Edit] I flash CWM and found out that I can't mound /sdcard which doesn't seem right...

After RSD Lite, it might not have booted up because the system image was removed from the file to make it work. Probably if you flash TWRP after doing the RSD file, and restore Rangerbry's system backup, you might be good..
No Luck.
Just tried this.
Got the following Errors during only system restore:
E:Unable to mount '/cache'
E:unable to mount '/data'
Still stuck on Unlocked bootloader screen.
My emmc might be corrupted I think
I do have sprint insurance. Think they can reflash stock?

Was that in CWM or TWRP recovery? Just trying to make sure the process was correct, haha. I have only started using TWRP on this device, but i think the 2 recoveries use different backup formats?

Can you boot to bootloader or just to fastboot? There are two control files in that RSD zip, one doesn't flash bootloader, try removing that one and forcing the reflashed bootloader. Then try restoring again. About all I can think of if it successfully flashes the other components... Maybe just restore system and not boot or data?

]Q] unable to mount /data

So one fine day my TF101G runs out of juice and shuts down. I did the usual, plug in power cable, wait for a while before powering on.
However this time the TF101G is stuck on the loading screen.
I'm on No-Name CM10.1 4.2.2 by josteink with CrossBreeder.
I also have TWRP installed, so I booted up with TWRP and tried to see what can be done. I noticed that there was an error message saying unable to mount /data regardless of what i try to do.
I supposed that would be the root of my failure to boot into the OS itself?
If so, what can I do to recover back into 4.2.2 without losing data?
Many TIA!
ok it appears that I'm unable to mount internal storage also.
I can enter TWRP but I cant do anything because i cant mount internal storage and /data

I know nothing about the G model but at that point I'd say you have to give up on whatever data was on there. Just start over, reflash a new rom. If it doesn't work, go back to stock then reflash.

Thanks Lethe, but I tried flashing CM10.1 but it failed due to unable to mount /data and also internal storage.
So I tried to flash stock firmware, but it failed also. Now I do not have TWRP/any recovery nor can I boot into CM10.1
I supposed the only way is through ADB.
But i'm not too sure how to go about doing it.
ok managed to get this working.
thankfully i still managed to boot into TWRP, and flash stock ICS firmware.
It didn't really went well because of unable to mount /data and internal storage.
But somewhere the flash in TWRP managed to take place and the tablet went to do some sorting out by itself and viola! it managed to boot into stock ICS.
run PERI and got everything up and running again. at the expense of losing all data but at least i dont have to get a new tablet
p/s: i look through the forums and it appears that the TF101 have a thing of building itself back up after a soft-brick

Glad you worked it out!

I don't know what my buddy did...

Wow this thing sucks! I'm really appreciating my Samsung with Odin right now! So, I have years of experience rooting and flashing Samsung phones with minimal adb experience. My buddy from work asks me if I can try to fix his shield tab that he F'd up trying to flash a rom on. Come to find out he never unlocked the bootloader or flashed a recovery or rooted the dang thing, just tried to flash the rom over stock like a numbskull. We thought it was dead forever because the only thing that would mount or connect in adb was the side load through the stock recovery. So, I finally got it to connect to fastboot (don't ask me how, I don't know), unlocked the bootloader, and flashed twrp. Now it won't flash supersu in adb sideload, so I put it on an SD card (which now magically mounts and works now) and flashed the zip in recovery but it says at the very end of the process while trying to update the partitions that it can't mount the data and system partitions so I'm not sure if I'm actually getting root or not and if so if it's permanent even though it says "success" at the top after flashing. I have no way to tell. I think this is because they have been accidentally wiped. Do you think it is safe to try to flash a rom in recovery from external sd card? And if so, which one? I have no idea which version bootloader, kernel, or os is, or was, on this device, I'm not familiar with any of the roms for it, and I'm not sure what prerequisites there may be for some of them....
Thanks for the help!

I had the same Problem with the partitions you discribed, have tried wipe them, change the file format and change it back?
I flashed a lot of Roms from the external SD Card and it worked every time.
I think you should go with Bliss Rom. ( Just try Lollipop and Marshmallow)

I can't wipe them because they won't mount. It's as if the partitions were erased completely. Not like the partitions were wiped, but like they don't exist at all anymore...
What do you mean by changing the file format? Format of what?

TWRP, wipe ,Advanced wipe
If that doesn't work just try installing a rom, boot it
If that doesn't work try this
Tried all recovery options and tried flashing bliss 6.2 with no luck. It says that it flashes successfully but also shows some errors about not being able to mount the system and data partitions. Then when I try to reboot it gets stuck at the nvidia logo (this is the closest that I've gotten to booting a rom). I can provide pictures if you want. I'm going to try the steps that you linked to as soon as the files download.
