Nexus S stopped vibrating - no vibration at all - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Something's wrong with my Nexus S. I have used this phone occasionally as I use my Galaxy S2 mostly but ever since the JB update, I've been using the Nexus S. I don't remember dropping the phone in the last week and today, out of the blue, the phone stopped vibrating. No vibration AT ALL. Not even when you turn the phone on/off. I tried wiping caches and reflashing the stock OTA that I'm using but to no avail.
I really don't want to pry this phone open as I don't want to pop its cherry but as a last resort I guess I'll have to UNLESS someone here has a fix or a better idea
By the way, I'm out of city and am stuck with a phone that won't vibrate
Looking forward to some good solutions.
Thank you and regards.

So it's not under warranty anymore?

Noop, I've had it for more than a year and a half now but it's been hardly used for 6 months in total as I kept switching in between to my Galaxy S2
I've tried tapping the phone in the right places, pulling the battery out, turning vibration on/off a hundred times, everything. Nothing seems to be working

Update: I tried using 2 other motors from different dead Samsung phones and none of them worked. Is the phone sensitive to the specific part that the motor is on the Nexus S? Any insight into this would be highly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi there I got my fone Thursday updated to jelly bean and I've had no vibration either I've got it all ticked on vibration but still nufink I've factory reset my fone twice aswel I'm on stock ota update

And now, it stops working AGAIN as i was texting!
I guess it wouldn't be a software issue, how'd it go with yours?

Does rooting get rid of the touch screen issue?

Quick question.. I know most of us are being plagued by the annoying touch screen issues.. so my question is:
Users that are using root/custom firmware.. are you still experiencing these issues? This will be the deciding factor in whether or not I root this phone seeing as there's not any release dates for any software updates.
I bought the S4G on July 9th. For the first week or so, I had a problem with the touchscreen where dragging the unlock ring up would rather bring an icon up. It would take 3-4 tries before the phone would really pull up the unlock ring.
After the first week, the problem went away for me. I have been S-OFF since the first of August with perm root and the problem still hasn't come back. Not sure if this is the same issue as you, but the problem seemed to fix itself.
What exactly is S-OFF? And what does it do for you?

My phone used to that at one point and it drove me crazy! Since then I did the whole rooting thing, flashed Civic's back2basic rom and I've haven't had any problems since. It's running super smooth. Did two other sensations with no problems, lag or reboots yet

Not sure if my problem is the same. On my Sensation, when my screen is turned on, it's not responsive in all places for the first 6 to 7 seconds. After 10 secs or so, it's working flawlessly. It's especially annoying when answerring or cancelling a phone call.
Do you think rooting and S-off would help this issue? I'm now on OTA 2.3.4
S-OFF, ROOT, custom rom etc. does NOT fix touch screen issue. That's what you were asking about, right?
OK, thanks for clearing that out.
The thing is, that I only have this issue after getting the phone back from repair (shattered glass). The repair guy couldn't find anything that could cause this issue. But due to the repair this touch screen vulnerability was triggered. Can't go back to HTC now, due to the repair. So I'm stuck for now.

If you haven't come across it yet, give this thread a read.
It does not. I used the Touchscreen Booster from the market. Works fine.
Rooting helps you to control your phone. You can try different roms and see if the problem goes.
Rooting doesn't but flashing a 2.3.4 ROM will solve ur issues more than likely. I'm using LeeDroid and its great no lag no dead spots.

phone keeps shutting off

In the past month I bought a used mytouch 4g slide off ebay in good working order. Lately though the phone keeps shutting off on me whenever I try to do anything. The phone is rooted with S-ON OFF.
I have installed many different roms but of late they all seem to be shutting off. I had this problem but it only happened every few days beforehand. After install of the rom I am waiting around 7 minutes before using my phone. Right now I'm back to my G2, which in my opinion feels better and battery last longer. I also dislike Sense but the camera is fantastic compared to the G2.
I have used Bulletproof 1.1, DoubleShot Lite 1.2.3, and MikTouch-0.7 and all had the same problem.

Definitely a hardware problem. Multiple roms should not all have that same problem. Either your battery, battery connection might be bad. But with such a general problem, it can be nearly anything
(exactly why I don't like buying used phones)
Phone Powering off by itself Solved!
So I have bought several phones over the past year cause of this same problem. I take it to the service provider for troubleshooting and all they keep telling me is its a hardware issue. They do a hard restart and blah blah blah. Long story short. IT NEVER FIXES THE PROBLEM... BUT.... I realized it was the battery slipping loose. every time you place the phone down it gently slips out of place. Of course it doesn't fall out cause the phone has a back. So. I just taped my battery to the inside of my phone. PROBLEM SOLVED!!!! Did this with my Samsung Conquer 4g... and with my friends 4g slide. It stopped the mysterious powering off, Try it and see it if works for you! Hope this helps someone!

I'm going to say its a hardware problem but my phone has been on for days now, though I'm not using it as I'm using my old G2.
A part of me just wants to stay with the G2 but I miss the excellent camera on the 4g slide. Of course I need to find a use for the slide though. Gotta love turning a very minor decision into a big deal.
If you're going to go used . if you have your area supported in craigslist buy it from there. Then atleast you can check for full functionality before you fork any dough over. I dont think ive ever bought a new phone in my life and never got a lemon
I've bought most of my phone's used and never had a problem. I would get a new phone but my phone selection is limited due to the QWERTY and good camera I want.
My phone tends to turn off when connected to WiFi with WiFi calling on... or at least it used to with stock and the CM 7 kang, but I haven't tried other ROMs.
Since the CM 9 alpha just got WiFi calling, I haven't had much time to test for that yet.
Have you tried not using WiFi or WiFi calling?
Hi all,
I'm having a similar shut off issue, only mu phone is fully stock. No root, no s-off, and no rom. It seems to be completely at random either by using the browser or any app or no app at all(after I've set my phone down, I've tried using it only to find it shut off). I did a factory reset and the problem persist, though not as often. Any ideas? Thanks!

Did you have any luck getting a replacement?
Was WiFi calling on? (My phone would reboot even stock randomly when WiFi calling was in use.)

I did. Same thing happened with the replacement. I rarely use WiFi and I make sure WiFi calling's off when I do use it. I thought it might be an app but so far, it's turned out to be the battery. I got the phone in February so I didn't think it would go bad so soon. Got an Anker and been restart free since.

[Q] Unpleasantness... Bricked phone?

So, while I'm no expert I'm not new to rooting and flashing. Did it quite a bit on my older Droid Inc 1, and have performed a few on my new SG3.
I have 3 backed up ROMs on my SD, Synergy, Beans and CM10. I was running Synergy and decided to give CM10 another shot to see if I could figure out what was killing NFC. So, flashed it up with ROM Manager (Used Odin previously) and everything went swimmingly. ROM was running, NFC was working, all my apps were reinstalled, no problems.....
Decided to see if I could get Wallet working on this install, so flashed it in, made the changes to build.prop and rebooted.
Heeerreeee's where the trouble started. Part way through the reboot the phone just shut down. Completely. 100%. Dead.
I had 87% battery when I started so it 'shouldn't be a battery problem. No power, no LED when I plug in the charger, no vol-up, home, power to get into recovery.
One interesting thing did happen while I was trying to get the phone up, I removed the battery for a bit, and plugged the USB cable in and got a red charging light. Put the battery back in, light still there. 1 minute later, light goes off and still nothing happening with the phone at all.
Anyone have any ideas beyond all the stuff I've given a shot to?

Have you tried borrowing someone's battery to see if you can also least boot? I have four samsung batteries for the S3 and would consider sending it to you before getting a replacement. I think the cost of a battery is $3 on Amazon.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
The reasons were different but i had the same thing happen to me, my phone wouldn't boot, wouldn't show up in the computer. Nothing, i tried my wife's battery, no change there either. I left it on the charger overnight and tried turning it on in the morning and after messing with it it came back on. Haven't had an issue since. Don't know what caused it, the phone just freaked out, turned off and wouldn't turn back on.
You can also try the resistor trick to see if that will bring your phone back. Here is a cheap way to do it.
http://hackaday.com/2012/09/03/saving-a-bricked-phone-with-a-pencil-lead/ Otherwise you can go to radio shack and pick up a resistor.
If Verizon sends you your phone back cause you messed with it, there is a brick repair service for like $60 bucks PM for the link if it comes to that.
Congrats on the new phone

hehe.. I can't say I was pleased with having to go that route, (can't stand being defeated by electronics) but all in all I can't imagine a simple software change causing the entire unit to just go dead. Not booting properly, or locking up and such, sure... but not just dead.
By this morning I had tried another battery (a friend has an SG3 also) to no effect, but I didn't try leaving it plugged in overnight. I did check the battery with an external charger I have and it was showing fully charged....
So, I'll get a replacement and stay away from CM10 at the very least.

Same thing happened to me when I tried to mess with the NFC hack on my SGS III.
What saved me was a USB Jig I happened to have handy when I...accidentally... soft bricked a friend's Samsung Captivate a few months back. The USB Jig is used to put the SGS III into download mode when all else fails that tiny little gadget saves the day.

I have looked into those and will most likely make one very soon. (I think I have everything I'd need, just may need to cobble some resistors together).
Couple of things I noticed throughout this 'process', regarding the CM10 (9-15 nightly) ROM, NFC and google wallet....
At first install of CM10 I noticed that NFC was active and working normally. It could read my tags without issue. After Wallet was installed though, NFC disappeared. It wasn't just disabled, it simply wasn't there any more. It was after noticing this that I decided to reboot, at which point my original problem started.
The reboot never came close to completing though, it shut down before it actually made it to the 'boot' phase, as in, while it was shutting down.
The actual cause of the power off is still a mystery to me, as I can't see a simple app change causing hardware failure.
So you bricked your phone, just like a few of us did yesterday.
What did you call Verizon saying in order for them to send you a new phone?

"I rebooted it, and it never came back on." and that was that.

+1. Hardware issue.
Still Charged Up
sounds like a personal problem - wore out your vibrator... j/k
never heard of that though - have you tried reflashing the ROM or resetting your sound settings?
tried everything but refreshing back from ep4. I was really hoping it wasn't hardware. wtf do I do now? haha
If you rule everything else out and it is the motor, it can be replaced if you don't mind a little disassembly. It's typically one of the easier repairs to do. In most phone, it's just a little round, flat cylinder, about the size of a small watch or hearing aid battery, clipped to the motherboard and connected by two wires.
how much would that cost and where do I buy the motor?
I'm pretty sure the motor is actually integrated (as in soldered) onto the board. Assuming you can actually find the motor, it's going to be a PITA desoldering and soldering that sucker. Why not just get your Charge replaced?

What I have done. (I also have insurance)
ODIN with PIT
In the middle of re-partitioning with the PIT pull the plug and disconnect all battery sources.
When you turn it back on It will say to connect to the computer and download mode will not
work... Take it to the store and tell them that the vibrate alert stopped working. You checked
to see if there was an update and there was. Take the update and then this showed up. Works
every time for me >.< Any time I frail up my phone I incorrectly PIT it and make an excuse to
get another one bahaha

I've had my charge since the day after it came out haha waiting on the s4 to upgrade I don't think they'll give me any more charges (I'm on #4). But not having vibrate sucks. I did hear that swap was doing this to some people and I have swap activated, I'm going to try that out for size, will report back
so i don't think replacing my charge is a possibility (unless I pull the this phone is f#@$!ng terrible card) which I'm not in the mood to do. Also, disabling swap did not help wiped dalvik also just in case that could affect anything. I was scared my phone stopped accepting charge and was about to re-partition my phone last night but it was 4am and my phone decided to work again so that's probably the last thing I can do and I'll do it when I've got some free time this weekend and report back for anyone having this same issue.
on a semi-related note what are you guys planning on upgrading to? I want to wait for the moto x but would rather get the S4 because I like what samsung has been doing with extra features in their version of android, but also the HTC M7 looks super appealing and its not mumbo jumbo like the s4

I went with the ThunderBolt. HUGE ROMS but still one of the best LTE phones out ( as in being like a tank and being sturdy)

Phone stopped vibrating

Thought I noticed a few days ago that my phone wasn't vibrating while ringing but forgot about it and went about my week. (I don't get a lot of calls). Yesterday I had the phone on vibrate only and happened to look at it while I was getting a call. It definitely was not vibrating. So I downloaded vibrate tester and... nothing. It's not like you can even hear a broken motor or something trying to vibrate, just nothing at all.
I haven't found this problem searching around, my phone is totally stock no root or anything. Anyone else seen something like this? I was on 4.4 when I noticed and I updated to 4.4.2 today and still no help. Any suggestions?

To do a factory reset, which I'll be trying tomorrow, but I have a sneaking suspicion it won't work. Just wondering if anyone else had observed this issue.
I had this happen. But it came like that out of the box. I returned it for a new one. Only took 6 days. It was a dead vibrator motor. Sounds like that might be your issue. If so try a factory reset and if it doesn't fix it then time to rma
