WiFi-only ATT captivate, what can I safely remove? - Captivate General

I have an ATT Captivate with Icy Glitch + CM9 and I use it as a wifi-only home phone. I use it for calls, texts, e-mail/browsing rarely, games, and radio. I'd like to know what system apps I can remove in order to free up some RAM so the phone isn't as sluggish, but I don't want to break any apps I do want to keep.
Here are the apps I use...
-GO Launcher EX
-GO Task Manager
-Google Play Store
-Zedge(rarely, will probably delete this)
-GMail
-Opera
-GrooveIP(for calls)
-Heywire(for texts)
-Voltage Control(for overclock, and an idle voltage adjustment in an attempt to fix the sleep-death issue in CM9)
-Black Exodus(theme for CM9)
-Several games
I'm running the GO task manager which doesn't kill system or permanent processes when you do an app-kill, and it lets you lock apps you don't want killed. According to it I have a few system processes always running and one in particular, called Google Backup Tra(it cuts off), utilizes 33.41mb of my RAM.
On average I have about 260-270mb used probably because I have GrooveIP/Heywire/GMail/Facebook always running. So what can I safely delete/disable and what would be the best way to do so? I removed a few things back when I was on Legend5 ROM using Titanium Pro, but I'm sure there's a simpler way to do it.

google backup transport can be frozen and it won't run. use TiBu or another tool for backup of contacts and calendar. freezing it gives you a path to unfreeze it if it's a problem to run without it.

put on slim bean 4.1.1 and freeze anything that looks like you wont use it through the manage apps menu... plus, i bet you could safely OC to more than 1.2ghz. I have been running mine with performance governor and 1,442 live oc with NSTools. It runs as quick or quicker than my ICS 4.0.4, 1.78ghz dual core tab with 1gb of ram! It plays any game I throw at it without any lag or crashes too...
But even if you don't OC to a higher value, i would suggest trying different governors to see which best matches your usage. Believe it or not the different sampling and up/down values in the governors make a huge difference. Moreover, I hear that with JB most of the CPU power is directed to the APP you are currently using rather than being lost to background processes.
What do you think?

Apps randomly starting in the background?

I use advanced task killer and minutes later I see MP3 Store, and Messages running. Before I saw a few others. Are they set to start running in memory for some reason? Not sure if they eat up much juice, but I wonder if I can make a list of certain ones and disable their start up somehow. Is there a task killter that blocks startups?
same here we need something to block these apps
Messages is required to recieve MMS (Even if you use handcent or chomp or something else as your main client). We tried removing that once in the hero forums and it caused ALL sorts of problems and force closes)
The mp3 store is usually ok to remove though.

Thanks codemonk,
Do you know that setting in advance task killer is that says "auto kill level"? It is set to disable now, but what does it do? Thanks.

I'm not sure...I avoid task killers as a rule (I installed one earlier to test something for an earlier thread and uninstalled afterwards once I got my info).
http://geekfor.me/faq/you-shouldnt-be-using-a-task-killer-with-android/ - This should provide some good info on it.
The better solution, especially for apps that you don't intend on using, is uninstalling the app (there's a whole thread talking about which ones are safe to remove).

yeah, that is a great idea. I imagine if I wanted it back I could just install it again. Thanks Codemonk.
Why do you need those apps not running? Android will kill them if it needs more memory.
Why are people obsessed with killing stuff? It's not like your phone runs better with 192mb of free memory vs 163mb...
it actually does, as well as lets the battery last longer since it isnt using as much processing power

Let the phone run for a good 12 hours. I was down to 42MB free basically idling and only using Handcent. Killed a few tasks and back up to 175 and everything is snappy again.
I don't like having to use a task killer, I didn't have to with my N1.
maybe there will be an app like Scotty for windows 7. I check and a bunch of bloatware starts on it's own. It's all marketing bs. When there is a nice root stripped down, with all the nice stuff enabled I'll do that.
download startup auditor from the market. great little app to select and unselect which apps you want to load when the phone powers up. only costs $0.99 usd

So if I leave it to no apps, will it load up with 0 apps running? Will it also prevent apps from randomly starting after phone is already on? Sounds like a nice app.
Unless startup auditor disables the service there is a list of apps that will randomly start up at times. I went into the application settings and apps like MP3 store don't have an option to uninstall.
I have used task killer to kill all apps and within minutes some start again.
"thecodemonk" why do you not use a task killer. I have only had an Android phone about 24 hours now and got a lot to learn.
First thing being how to enable tethering.
I have mine set to "safe" and it auto closes things when screen goes black.
Make sure you "IGNORE" certain apps... like the clock or else your alarm wont work... I almost over slept
I have the following set to ignore:
Messages
Handcent
clock
gmail
Mort Music player
Fastbright
Check out the application "Autokiller." This comes with preset values (optimum, moderate, aggressive, etc.) so that apps will be killed off once your free memory drops below a certain point. This app works great, but it does REQUIRE root to function and must be rebooted to finish applying the settings. Also lists all apps, processes, and services which can be killed off manually as well.

It is in market, search "autokiller". Requires root access, but I can confirm it is working fine.
Wanted to add that I am annoyed by programs that I never intend to use running in the background. From recovery I used Android Commander to quickly select and delete every .apk in /system/app that I never wanted to see again.
Helo guys saw this topic and was over at androidcentral and saw this article which talks about an app that would kill any app that autostarts.
won't let me post links as i'm a new user, but go to androidcentral and look for the article about the app autostarts or just google "autostarts"
using task panel to kill the "junk" like amazon and mp3 store- also any program that doesnt attach itself to things like facebook or messages - i use skyfire so i have set that to autokill but leave the "internet" running..
i also use this to switch between apps running.. having to hit back back back or even going to home then program list then finding it is a long process.. for example ...
i get a handcent message - go into the threaded sms- type and im done - holding down the home screen doesnt pop all the programs up - therfor i set task panel up to stay on my status bar and hit it then go to the program i want.

Can you have to many system apps? Odd.. .

All my system tools, network tools, repair tools, is it possible there tools over lap. Like if three apps all have same program all have start up app killers do they all work. Which wins out.. that's one thing I'm talking battery savers. Network defence. I have apps for there best options but some do things I don't want so can that cause conflict? Like slow phone down. I notice memory being eaten up and wonder if that could be the issue. I mean I want them all but if there duplicate abilities is hurting not helping I will uninstall them. Also how come programs that don't need to start up and come back even after I Kill them. Thanks

Is there any other way to release more system memory each ram beside deleting apps. I hate using over 350ram which I often do
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
Deleting apparently will not free up ram it will free up rom. Your ram is used when apps are running. I have only seen system monitors needed when you overclock and battery savers usually don't help that much. And yes they will overlap and conflict with each other. My battery lasts longer without battery savers and app killers. App killers can also (by default) turn off apparently your phone needs to run and cause stability issues unless you tell them not to (not all will do this but some.) I personally use the back arrow to go back to the home screen and that pretty much stops the app and I get on average about 18 hours out of mt photon (most I have gotten is 1 day 13 hours but I didn't use it a lot at all) and I got about 15 hour average on my evo.

OK I just hate getting rid apps I paid for and are good. Like Rom manager. Super manager. Rom tool box and titanium back up. I mean others too where one does all functions. So if I uninstall a app it wont run, so more memory. Is there a way to clean duplicate system files running or does it need them. Like system tasks not apps. Thanks. Also why do some apps run even when I turn them off starting up is there as app for that. Freeze? Function keep it from running in the background

why are you trying to use any type of task killer? its not needed.
why do you think you need to uninstall your useful tools?
do you understand how Android works?
why do you think you need to free up RAM? Free RAM is WASTED RAM....there are thousands of articles on this subject, i would suggest you do some reading on how the system works, before you randomly start killing processes and apps.

Galaxy y Ram problem

I got Samsung galaxy y with 290MB of RAM, but unfortunately, when I installed some apps, multitasking became impossible, None of my work runs in background, . RAM is all the time occupied by Go sms, Launcher pro (Needed) google maps, system sync, software update, DRM contents, Email. sns, SyncmIDS ( I dont need them all)
Even clearing RAM and force closing these apps results nothing.....
Any help, ???

Most useless post?
I got the same phone and it's SWEET!
@OP: First of all uninstall GOsms. Go apps are real RAM sharks and should be left to users like atticusmas.
Then root your phone, install SD Maid and clean up your device. Uninstall apps like Maps, Software Update, Google Backup(if you're not using it), etc. A guide line on which apps are safe to uninstall can be found here.
You can also consider installing a custom ROM (Creed's and Repencis are the best ones - many features and fast as lightning (tested by me )).
Whether or not you install a custom ROM is up to you but the one thing you HAVE to install is V6 Supercharger. It will solve all your problems.
And feel free to thank me
Installing a custom Rom will solve this problem to some extent ?

Most certainly.
But cleaning up your system and installing V6 will be enough to get you running. Use V6 no matter what. It's gonna make you fly.
And honestly uninstall GO sms.
If you want I can also send you my self made ROM. I reduced it to a minimum.

Well I am too late to answer your problem, but still my post might help someone else.
I myself am using galaxy y and implemented the below described tweak and ended with a successful result.
Clearing Memory before this tweak would just drop to 156 mb to the maximum but after this tweak it goes to 101 or even below 90 mb easily.
You can use a tweak to overcome your problem.
DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK.
As you have your phone rooted, go to /system/build.prop and edit it with a text editor (You can use Root Manager for this process) and add this line at the bottom of the page
"ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1" (without quotes)
After adding this line carefully reboot your phone and clear memory with your phone's task manager and you can observe a much of ram left.
CAUTION: DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK.
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG WITH YOUR PHONE.

im suggest you using v6 supercharger..
and also setting your lmk value..
and uninstall apps that use lot of ram..

Application which causes killing chosen aps on startup of a specific app.

I am looking for an app that will improve my experience while using RAMeating applications.
I need an app that will kill every unneeded app (just like most popular ram boosters) when I will start a specific, chosen by me app. (F.e. I run Angry Birds and all unneeded apps get killed by the "wanted" application including itself)
Anyone know such one?

Have you tried supercharging? the v99 Supercharger works great on pretty much any custom rom.
Hi,
RAM management in Android is generally pretty good. AFAIK the kernel should manage this all for you without needing to kill apps.
+1 for supercharging, I am using v6 supercharger script and it works very well. I never kill apps just to free up memory.
For actions based on conditions I use Llama from the store. It is designed mainly for profiles but is very powerful and can probably do such things on a rooted phone.
I use it to change sound profiles and turn features on and off depending on conditions such as location dock type and times, including starting and stopping apps depending such conditions.
I've been using V6 Supercharger and it fails me on my ICS Mimicry 1.3.1
It has pretty bad performance. I've also tried GameBooster which came out to be scam.
Llama is too "big". I've given up games on my Vision for now.

[Q] Startup Manager - Programs still run

I have installed 'Startup Manager (Free) v4.7' and disabled a heap of User and System apps that I just don't use, or think need to be running at startup. I believe this will help the device run better by way of using less RAM and processor to keep it running in the background, in the same way that this works on a Windows based system.
However, it seems some apps run regardless. As an example, I have disabled 'GMail' and 'Email' because I use another app for my email. When a new email is received in my Gmail account, I get a Gmail notification (as well as from my main email app). Drives me nuts!
For good measure, I have also tried running 'Startup Cleaner 2.0', which I also have same disabled/applied.
What am I missing here?
bump
Bump, and I'm looking for recommendations for a good startup manager as well. Autostarts hasn't been updated in ages, and I'm wondering if there's something better than "startup manager", my current go to.
Since u dont use them, get tb and delete them.
personally i use greenify to hibernate apps and prevent them from working. u can download it from playstore.
cheers
Some of these programs I do use, less regularly, but I feel it would help speed my phone up if that went running till I need them... Using less resources.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Since android uses "intents"
then a "startup manager" and task killers do no good at all.
You must disable the intents for each application that keeps starting it.
se
Go check out Autostarts
If you don't want to buy autostarts then you can do it from the command line or you can help me develop these features in the tool in my signature.
Also #Fear 's idea is a good one.

Besides Autostarts I would DEFINITELY go check out the xposed module called BootManager.
It will help you with these.
Try using Greenify it will help......
