I was on the CM forums and someone was asking how to remap the virtual buttons on the bottom of the AT&T skyrocket. Not sure about the filenames on the Rogers flavor of this phone... I researched a little bit and found the correct file to change and thought I would share...
The user over there asked how to change the search button to the multitask since he doesn't use the search button...
If you have root, open your file manager of choice.
You need to navigate to /system/usr/keylayout/
You should see a file called melfas_touchkey
Open in it a text editor.
It should have a line that reads
Key 217 SEARCH VIRTUAL
Replace the word SEARCH with the word APP_SWITCH
Save the file.
Reboot.
So far I have had no problems after I rebooted and used the search key as a task manager...
If you find problems with my method, please share.... I am just starting to get into the deeper parts of Android and learn how to DEV some... I hope to get to the point of guys like sk8terwitskil and the likes but I am not even that far out of the Noob camp... well ok, maybe I have been modding my phone for a bit...
Would love to do this but I don't have the Melfast file in the location you mention.............

Are you on Rogers or AT&T?

You may have to poke around a little bit and find he file that lists your virtual keys.
Its in that directory for sure...
The # and SEARCH VIRTUAL will be there also...
It only has 4 entries.... hence the 4 buttons at the bottom....
Hope that helps....

Does anyone know of a way to change the physical search button behavior on the SGS4G? I don't use it and would really like for it to open my dialer or something instead.
that would be awesome if that was possible
u need to be rooted.
then use buttonremapper on the market or launchkey
QuickDesk can be set to launch on a press-and-hold (in any context). Not exactly what you might be looking for, but I find it pretty slick.

I was wondering if there was a way we could change the jump key I don't use it at all I want to assign it to the messgaing application any help thanks in advance!

its possible to assign it to another hardware key like search, i posted a thread on it and what to do here in the general. But you can already use it to take you to apps you just have to jump to them. (Jump+S = Messaging app) and you can change what letter take you to what app in settings
Hi everybody, I'd like to know if there's a way to map the buttons of the dock.
I would like to change the "search" button of the phisical keyboard and let it open the recent app.
Is it possible?
Thank you in advance!

Ok so after some search I've found out that the easiest way to have something similar is to modify /system/usr/keylayout/asusec.kl using root explorer or similar.
If you modify the 'key 217' with 'APP_SWITCH' command and reboot you'll have the option to bring the app switcher and not the recent used app.
Still better then a useless key to me.
Check that your 'key 217' is now binded with the SEARCH command before modify it! If not search your number
Cheers

Scratch that, I'm a moron and didn't mount as r/w. I'm assuming though that there's no known way to map the hc/ics task switcher from the soft key?
I would like to be able to put shortcuts on the home screen which correspond to different camera settings, for example one shortcut for macro mode and one for normal, OR, have different camera shortcuts which correspond to different folder locations, for example one labeled "family" and one labeled "photography". Anyone know how to do this?

I just tried it, it doesnt seem to be able to do this.

I don't have anything to say on the matter, because I don't have an idea apart from the already mentioned AnyCut.
I would strongly advise you, however, to change the title to something more meaningful and descriptive-- like "Q: camera settings via shortcuts" or something similar, because a generic and utterly non-descriptive title like the one you used here will not entice the more knowledgeable forum dwellers to enter your thread to finally read what you''ve put up here. You'll have to wait for an eternity to get a more definite answer.
Just my $ 0.02.
What about where it says "make your own" I'm sure you can set defaults and values to the locations and actions you need. For that you need an experienced person, or you can always email the developer of the app.

If I am not mistaken, Camera 360 Ultimate has an option to create such shortcuts!
I have done this before with some files in /system/usr/keylayout/ on GB to remap camera button to power, but I don't know exactly what files to edit on ICS Atrix 2, I did search but it seems like the files are different with various systems...
Someone please tell me how to do that manually?
Atrix 2 ICS keymap file
Did you get the answer to this? I need to have wake on volume on my device. Can't decide which file to change. I found that the Nexus has wake on volume. It must me Moto who killed this feature. It worked on GB for me.
If you got the file(s), please share.
Thanks,
Sayantan
Have you tried decompiling the ROM and poking around yourself? Sometimes that's the best way to learn.

I changed evfwd.kl and Generic.kl (added WAKE after volume up and down keys) and that did the trick. Also reviewed other key layout files and decided that they need not be changed.

PS: You need to reboot after making the change.
