Hi. I have a galaxy tab 2 7.0. Basically as soon as I got the device I went and rooted, installed cm9, but I noticed the slow file transfer speed.
Now I'm trying a stock de odexed stock rom, but this one only has mtp and ptp mode for files transfer, and I'm not happy with it not having a settings button to access more option within settings (that 3 dot in a line button which cm9 has).
I am extremely annoyed with this tablet, because transfering big files like movies would take forever.
Does the stock stock rom have usb mass storage mode?
which rom or how do I set this up so that I can transfer files to the full speed?
my only alternative right now is to unmount microsd card and plugging it into a card reader to get full speed.
your help is appreciated, thank you in advance.

Nope, UMS is no longer supported starting with ICS. MTP with the USB cable is one option, sneaker-net (using sdcard like you describe above) is another, and if you have root you can scp files to an android SSH server like Drop Bear SSH. Yes, none are ideal transfer speeds

Hey all,
Bought my TF today and iam an android user for long time..so rooted it...installed prime rom on it..Is it me or when I try to connect to USB to PC.. it connects as a media player and shows storage..fine but the speed in unbelievebly slow! Like for a 300 mb file taking me 40 mins?!! Is it same for all of you guys? If Iam doing something wrong...please guide me!!
Thanks
Soundslike you are transferring at USB1.0 speeds. I believe the TF can transfer at USB3.0 speeds. As an example, I copied 3 full length movies around 800Mbytes each in less than 15minutes. Try a different port or computer
Exactly!! thats why wondering! While I can copy stuffs to micro SD card pretty fast...whenever iam trying to copy something to internal storage its soooooooooo slow!! What am I doing wrong? Is it may be a rom problem? :S

It's likely, like the other post said, that you're plugged in to a USB1.0 port. Connect to a different USB port; a faster USB port. USB 2.0 or 3.0

I just did some transfers today, 1.34 gb one file took about 5 mins or so but I had some files that went slow mo so I disconnected the usb cable then plugged it back it and got the higher speed again.
The stupid Asus sync on the tablet was always on the taskbar.
BTW does any know how u transfers files directly to the microSD with the USB cable, I had to copy to tablet then move it over to Sd card?

I did change my ports...but no help...Nd for your question...inside the internal storage you will see there is a folder called Micro SD.....Agh this slow speed is really frustrating!! lol
I hate to say it, but try a different computer and see if the speed stays as slow. A newer computer? Just confirm it isn't your hardware!
Yup will try that tomm... lets see.. :S Dont want to return it....

You could try getting an SDCard reader for your PC. There are USB adapaters that take microSDs. Then you can copy direct to the microSD without going through the USB cable at all
EDIT: For example: http://www.staples.com/SanDisk-Mobi...gy:Accessories_&_Memory:814084:SDDRK-121-A11M

Mate the the thing is that when I copy something to Micro SD its pretty good and fast but when ever its the internal storage..It takes agess!! :S
Well I had SE w960i.. it transferred 1GB in less than 3 minutes through USB. But it had a internal memory.. So the speed difference?
By the way... How do I access TF's internal storage by USB cable? It doesn't shows as connected removable device at all. Can connect with asus sync though, and I've installed some drivers for it also, but somehow I can't copy files directly to TF... Maybe I'm missing some drivers anyway.
Hey there folks,
I'm experiencing the same problem actually - horrendously slow transfer rates to the internal memory of the device.
I've tried both my Laptop and my Desktop, each with USB 2.0 ports, but each connection gives me the lovely Window error message "This device can perform faster if you connect it to a USB 2.0 Host..." etc., etc. Anyone have a similar issue? Could this be a driver issue on both machines? Am I just doing something incredibly wrong?
I'm running KRAKD 1.5.2, and would really like to transfer my music over to this thing in less than 3 hours =( Any help is greatly appreciated!
Whenever i plug my nexus with my laptop to transfer files i get speed which is as low as 300-400 kbps!!!
Please help me, is it a virus problem or rom?? Because i have checked with so many systems, bt on each pc speed is slow..
How can i fix it??
If you're transferring large files, forum members suggest doing it via recovery as it's much quicker. I personally have not tried it though. I use AirDroid to do most of my average size file transfers. Mainly because I don't like wires
I believe it's a ics problem and there's no fix yet. So like the other guy suggested use recovery to transfer files. It is much more faster. If you don't know how to transfer files through recovery, all you need to do is...
Turn off the phone
Plug the phone to computer
Go to recovery
Mount and storage
Click the option at the bottom(I forgot to name of it)
Transfer your files

It is a problem with ICS, namely the 3.0 kernel the linux system is based on. Someone's reported it to Google already, but all they've done was mark it as medium severity, and leave it at that. Maybe they'd wake up if a mass of reports poured into their bugtracker, but it's a long shot...
Thank you guyz.... u saved me frm erasing mah usb storage
Hi. I've searched but found no answer so here is my thread . So I am somewhat unhappy with how my Verizon GSIII is behaving. Since day 2 I learned I cannot connect this phone as a disc drive on WIndows or Linux. The only options I get when connected via USB to a computer are Media device (MTP) and Camera (PTP). My friend show me his ATT GSII last night. It connects as a disc drive (regular flash drive behavior).
When connecting an external HDD via USB Android should recognize that drive as a mass storage device. His ATT SIII did this, my Verizon SIII did not. I got the message in the notification area "USB Connect" followed by "USB Disconnected." Thankfully, I have no files I want to transfer onto my device as I'm coming from an HTC Incredible, but in the future I will want to browse my file system on my laptop.
Am I the only one here with these issues? I am not rooted.
-Justin
Edit: I found an article which looks like I can browse the external SD Card but not hte internal memory. This is only for root users however. Enable USB Mass Storage for root.
If your Galaxy S3 connects as mass storage, post the carrier.
My S3 shows up as separate internal and external devices when I plug it into my USB port and is listed as SCH-I535 when ejecting. However my Nexus show up as an MTP device when ejecting. Both devices are rooted.
So there may be hope. I'm going to root today, well try to. Can you link me to the ROM you flashed so I have a higher possibility of achieving what I want?
Will every build ROM found in the developer section here get rid of the OEM functionality?
I have the same 2 options as you when connecting to a PC, but, when connected windows will pop the "browse for files" instantly and the 2 drives will be displayed under Computer, one for the internal SD and for the external.
This was like this from the first time i plugged the phone in, before root, same after.
It actually seems like we get to skip the step of "Enable USB sharing" which I find great, plug in and the drives pop.

I used root66 to do mine.
However I had access to both drives prior to doing the root update.
Both of you seem to have more luck than I'm having. When I plug it into Windows I had no way of browsing files. In (K)ubuntu when I plug it in a popup has an option to browse which takes me to 1 folder names 'USB PTP Class Camera' which I can get to the internal storage, but not the SD Card. I'll be making a trip to Verizon today for sure. It makes me wonder if a rooted stock image from Samsung would fix the issue.
Quick question.
Which drivers did you install?
Why do I need drivers, I'm not doing anything but reading the flash memory? It should just work in both Linux and Windows.
Note that the guide to enable UMS on the S3 is for the International version, not the US version. The US version doesn't yet have a UMS option.
You shouldn't (and don't) need drivers for the SD storage to show up on your computer.
Just to test it I connected my S3 to my gf's laptop running W7, both drives popped right away there too.
I just want to make a note: Can't remember exactly what I did but after a few drivers on my AT&T SGS III I am able to just plug into my computer and move files around.
Can anyone helo me transfer video files...pic files i can transfer but all the video files wint...i get an error message on the computer ( pc ) and my s3 says syncing and does nothing. Its a verizon gs3.
skillzo1: How are you trying to transfer these video files?

Sure do.
ICS devices use MTP to transfer files, not UMS. I have a verizon S3 and the drives appear when I plug it in. I had USB debug mode enabled and when I plugged it in it automatically downloaded and installed drivers and worked after that. You shouldn't need root to do all of this.
kthung, thanks for that tid-bit of information. Now how do I do this in Linux? I can browse internal memory, but not my micro SD card via USB.

Hmm unfortunately I don't really know anything about linux. Maybe check this thread out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1785243
I seriously hope I'm wrong about this. Connecting my phone to a computer with the USB cable no longer brings up the selection screen. Instead, it automatically turns on USB debugging. This makes it impossible to transfer files from phone to computer via USB. (This is true on Mac and Linux PCs with the newest HTC drivers.)
How am I supposed to get these ROM files onto the phone from my PC? Am I missing something?
No, JB uses the MTP crap instead. How are you going to transfer files? Well, in windows it still shows up as a drive. But you can also use adb to transfer files (which is usually faster than the MTP crap)

It should automatically pick it up on your pc that's what it should do now instead of a selection screen and usb debugging isn't enabled automatically you have to enable it in the settings under development in settings...... But yea that's what's changed in JB but your phone pc should pick it up and it should say HTC one s now instead of removable disk

So is this the end of UMS for good? It's ridiculous! There are so many devices that use Mass storage Still. I can't use my phone with my Car stereo as it only has a USB port! I don't understand why google has ditched it in favor of MTP? It's slow to copy files, doesn't generate thumbnails on pictures and most of the time it crashes when copying large files!
---------- Post added at 08:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:28 PM ----------
Anyone know if there a ROM available with UMS working?
Google hasnt ditched it afaik. All AOSP roms still runs mass storage-mode. CM10 does it for sure.
Are you running a mac or pc?
Works on CM10

I can confirm that Mass Storage Mode works on CM10. I'm running the nightly from 1/20. I often bounce back between Sense and CM10 and I would this is one of the advantages of CM10, although I'm not sure how much of an advantage.
Nick
Well, MTP is about 10x slower than mass-storage, and 5x slower than ADB.
So if you transfer files often mass-storage is a giant advantage. If you transfer files once in a while ADB is the way to go.
MTP is only usable when theres no other option.

Does CM10 ROM include UMS for Internal storage? Or only SD Card?
Only /sdcard/, its not really possible to mount anything else on the PC.
If you have the need to explore the whole phone, check out quick adb It gives you access to the whole device as long as youre rooted.
I've been using Z3 till now, there was an option for USB Mass Storage mode, which simply emulated sd card as pen drive. I could simply transfer any file I wanted with the highest speed possible!
This option is gone in XZ Premium, and the way I see it the only method available now is MTP (which sucks massively, words can't describe how bad this protocol is)
So my question is, what can I do to transfer any file I want at top speed to my phone? This is 2017, I've bought high speed SD card, I can't believe I'm stuck with MTP that goes around 5MB/s... There has to be a way for legit file transfer...
I use a app called superbeam, it uses wifi.
Sent from my G8141 using Tapatalk
I wouldn't call wifi a solution to that, I'm going to use a high speed sd card too to transfer 4k movies and stuff back and forth so I'd like to know this myself too.
Looks like Sony is providing USB 2.0 cable with Sony XZ Premium (UCB20 is USB 2.0), this is one of the reasons of low transfer speeds.
Sucks for me as well
Anybody found a better solution?
If you have Root, you can get a app from the play store that enables Mass Storage
How is this called?
Would be the solution as soon as root exploit is found
If you have fast internet just FTP? Or just use an SD card reader? But the latter will kill your flaps water resistance after time so wouldn't bother ?
Mass storage mode transfer is a thing of the past for good reason. Your phone, under such a mode, would present its internal storage to the computer to mount up and use as if it were a thumb drive. Trouble is, very few file systems support concurrent read/write mounting by multiple computers, and you won't find any of those that do on a phone. So, when in mass storage mode, the computer must be given exclusive access to the storage, meaning the phone cannot access it. Obviously, this wouldn't work if the phone had to give up exclusive access to important system files, so this lead to the two partition system whereby important stuff was on an OS partition unavailable as mass storage and user data was on an 'sdcard' partition. That partition sizing was set at the factory and couldn't be changed without root and often kernel work, and it usually wasted a ton of space on the OS partition because OEMs are necessarily conservative there. Also, it restricted what file systems OEMs could use for the sdcard partition as your computer is unlikely to understand file systems like ext3/4. So the sdcard partition was quite often fat32, which has a few downsides. Firstly, Microsoft do hold patents there that they enforce, so licensing is needed. Secondly, it is an archaic and crappy file system with limitations like no single file larger than about 4GB. Not a great plan in 2017 - I don't think I even have any movies that small on disk anymore.
All that said, I don't see the problem with MTP. If it's slow for you, it's likely because you're using the supplied cable, which is USB version 2, so slow. I slung about 15 GB or so of film onto my phone yesterday through a USB 3.1 cable in under a minute. It's definitely the fastest USB transfer to a phone I've ever experienced.

I have now tested a lot of different solutions for file transfers.
None of the ones emulating a network card and making SMB share worked.
Finally I landed on some FTP server apps.
Now I use "WiFi Pro FTP Server" as this one had best performance out of the ones I tested.
With performance I mean time until directory content (~3.000 jpeg files) is displayed by FTP client. This one takes about half a minute where crap MTP via USB took more than 5 minutes (with new, high quality USB 3.0 cable!).
I have notebook and phone in different WiFi bands to increase performance. Transfer speed is about 4-10MB/s so really good and far beyond MTP.
Of course, I am still missing good old mass storage mode
