what's wrong with this phone?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

There's nothing 'wrong' with it. It was more than likely rooted via the Odin recovery method, so now it will show custom at every boot.

I'm more than certain that it's happening to those who flashed the custom boot.img in Odin for root access early on. Happened to me as well. Ended up doing a complete factory restore using the stock image and it disappeared. I've rooted via the new method, am running Synergy Rom, and the custom screen no longer shows.

what happen was I accidently put gnex sim card into s3.

All the sim card is for is for connecting to Verizon (somewhat like AT&T's sim cards) putting the sim card from your Nexus wouldn't mean anything.

As Nit3mare said s3 was rooted using boot.img but until now there was no unlocked padlock image when booting ( at least i power off the phone twice a day). It just showed up after accidental sim card swap.

Right, you say the s3 is rooted. There's your issue.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app

And as far as your sim card theory goes, I came straight from the Gnex myself. Popped my sim card in, was good to go with no issues. It's the boot image used.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app

it's not sim card theory. I just want to know what did trigger this. after reflashing to stock it had been gone for a while. root the phone using Noxius Ninja's tool then put back everything on the phone again like root explorer, tb, rom manager etc.. Now unlocked padlock image is back then device stature is from NORMAL to MODIFED. probably one of those apps which needs root access. now i suspect cwm. but as long as i could go back to stock i should have no problem.

I doubt you've completely reverted to stock. Flashing a stock rom is not reverting to complete stock. The reason why you are getting the custom screen, is because of the Odin root method, and that's that.

At this point I've tried every method of flashing, and every version of cwmr. Ok if anyone is still having problems, id like to mention that I exchanged my 5 year old 2g simcard yesterday for a new one, and bought a new 16gb class 4 sandisk sdcard, and EVERYTHING is working great! so far maybe only 2 or 3 occurrences of data loss, easily corrected with a battery pull. And I borked some lib files trying to get the camcorder to work. So I installed the kanged version update-cm-7.1.0-RC0-G2x-KANG-signed.zip overtop of my build to get the rom to boot again, and now the camcorder works! Maybe only about 15fps but works nonetheless...

Problem booting up after using thunderbolt restore...

I had my TB running Zeus Skyraider. I was having some minor issues but nothing that really scared me. I decided to restore it/unroot it in case I had to bring it in. I used the app thunderbolt restore. Now it won't boot past the white "HTC" screen and it only says HTC, no "Quietly brilliant". I can get to the bootloader but it automatically tries to install a update and won't let me do anything other than reboot. I'm really scared I bricked my phone. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I should probably also mention that it did boot up once and everything looked fine, and then I tried to install a verizon OTA update. That is when it started really having problems.
You might yet clearing your cache.
Sent from my ADR6400L using xda app-developers app
But I can't even get to recovery. The bootloader won't let me.
After the bootloader checks IMG150 or whatever it asks if I want to start update. Whatever I say it just leads to the plain HTC screen again. It also says "***LOCKED***" at the top of the screen. Is my phone completely locked?
The bootloader is locked. Perhaps flash an RUU to return to stock rather than an ota.
Sent from my ADR6400L using xda premium
Ok, I am pretty bad at this stuff. Can someone point me to an appropriate RUU. I don't know what I should use. Does the radio I had before restoring matter or anything like that? I just want to know exactly what I am doing before I do it.
Okay, Zeus is gingerbread, so if you were running that, then you are best served flashing one of the gingerbread RUU files. You most certainly do NOT want to flash a froyo version.
Development Stickies have them. Read up on how to flash it.

Yes.
Remove the SD and then try to factory reset from the bootloader.
If it doesn't work remove the PG05IMG.zip off of the SD and then rename this https://dl.dropbox.com/u/61129367/Stock-ROM.zip to PG05IMG.zip and put it on the SD and then boot to the bootloader and run it. Then remove the file from the card and try to boot.
So nothing ITT seemed like it helped because the phone was not booting up all the way, but this morning it was on and everything was working so, I think it is at least in a state where I can take it to a verizon store and see what they can do about it. Thanks for all of the advise everyone.

[Q] Unroot Verizon Galaxy S3

Hello all,
I recently rooted my Galaxy S3 only to have my Mic fail on me 2 weeks later... Very dissatisfied with my Samsung about that - even though I am loving the phone. Anyways, back to the issue. Verizon has agreed to send me a replacement and I have to send them mine back. The problem is that I know that if I send them a rooted phone they will not honor the warranty, and I am having a very hard time flashing the Verizon Stock rom.
More specifically, and to see if I am doing anything wrong.. I used ODIN to flash a custom rooted rom onto my phone which worked perfectly, and now I am once again trying to use ODIN in order to flash the stock rom which I downloaded from goo.im - the file that I am using is HOME_I535VRALF2_I535VZWALF2_618049_REV09_user_low_ship.tar.md5
Simple steps - reboot into downloading mode -> check auto-reboot and reset time on ODIN and choose the file above under PDA. All works fine, the phone reboots and I get a PASS, and yet my phone is stuck on the Verizon 4G loading intro. I think that's what they call a soft brick.
The first time this happened, I flashed a different rom and the phone loaded properly but it had the open lock symbol under Samsung which I think means that it was unlocked.. Either way, it was not the unrooted and official stock rom which is what I need on my phone in order to keep my warranty. The file that DOES work is COMBINATION_I535VRBLJ1_I535VZWBLJ1_381038_REV09_user_low_ship(NO_WIPE).tar.md5
I have followed the above steps over and over again and I always get the same result - stock doesn't work, the other one does.
Any ideas? What could the issue be?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709
Personally I would try the files found in section 5 of this thread.
According to Droidstyles guide before his recent edits, if it freezes on the boot logo after a successful Odin factory flash then you're supposed to pull the battery, boot into recovery, and do a factory reset. Try that.

You should probably factory reset after flashing, for you don't want to be running a buggy phone.

Use a full wipe version and this would not happen...part of the reason why i removed nowipe versions such as f2. But yes as slimsnoop said, data wipe /factory reset will fix that.

Follow section 5 of Droidstyle's (the guy above you) guide. Click the link in his signature. I'm not sure about how this handles modified network configuration though, that's not something I remotely know anything about.
I thought there was a way to bypass the activation screen? On older phones, you could tap the four corners of the screen or something like that? Anyone ever heard that before?

[Q] {q} HELP! MORON ATTACK! This thing is like a soap opera

So, yesterday, I had a perfectly functioning, stock 4.1.1/rooted unit.
Got a little frisky and decided to try out Liquid Smooth. Flashed that through recovery (it's a 4.2.1 Beta 2) but forgot to do the bootlocker.
The latest LS has a Bluetooth sound problem that's pretty bad. So, I thought I'd switch over to CM10.1, their 4.2.1 effort.
Well, without the bootlocker in place, you can pretty much guess how that worked out.
So now, I've odin'ed a variety of roms and so forth; no clue what happened to my backup.
My main focus has been what I call the dunce-cap routine, of going back to stock and starting over.
The problem? I did that and now I'm stuck in roaming mode and my calls don't work.
I'm dead without this phone (considering how long I've been working on this, since 8 pm or so yesterday except for a couple of hours of sleep, I might be dead, period.) and I've got to have one functioning. It's so bad that I'm considering just trashing it and buying another one, even thought THAT would hurt.
Almost everything I try winds up either getting the yellow triangle or the odin fail.
Now, thanks to some help I've gotten here that focused me into understanding this total screw up is MY fault completely, I believe I know what has to be done.
The plan was to go back to stock, root and DO THE DAMNED BOOTLOCKER, then go back into CM10.1 and make some changes in subscribing to CDMA or something (don't have that in front of me this second) to get the phone part of the phone operational but I can't get there.
In the guide here I have completed step 1, flashing the factory image.
The next step is blowing me up. I have used the file I have for the Recovery: CWM6023TouchVZW.tar.md5.tar, maybe 4 times.
NOW when I try it, odin fails and the phone tells me "secure check fail : recovery."
And help would be appreciated. Before I feed this thing to my Doberman Cavalier Spaniel. Or something.

Yup. Completely stock rom is installed. The next step was installing the recovery... and using a file that I had used before, that's where I'm running into the problem of the secure check fail.
That very file HAS worked before, 3 or 4 times with no problem.
Why does the file end in ".tar.md5.tar"? It's supposed to end in ".tar.md5" Since owning this phone, I've never seen a file with ".tar" twice in the file name.

Update: OK... have gone through the guide which went brilliantly.
Now, do I just boot this thing into recovery and flash the CM10.1?
Is there anything I've overlooked? Anything else I need to do?
And do I do the factory reset/wipe dalvik and the rest before, or after?
I presume I have to use ezlock to unlock the bootloader again after this, right?
No, you still need to unlock bootloader and backup your IMEI. You may want to do quite a bit of reading, CM 10 is not as easy to fix some of the potential problems that you could possibly encounter.
I am not hating on them, but don't think it is as simple as one of the TW ROMS.

When I try this method to back up the IMEI it doesn't do anything after entering the *#7284# and if I hit the phone, it just sends me to a Verizon intercept operator.

Blk3 Odin file and locking bootloader

Kind of a dumb question but I was wondering if I lock my bootloader (using ez unlock) and flash the Odin file in the subject line isn't it the same as using the ics file that automatically locks your bootloader? Lol well that's the expected result when you lock the bootloader via EZ Unlock then reboot. You're supposed to Odin flash next and the yellow triangle warning let's you know, as a user, to Odin flash back to stock. That's perfectly normal.

Yea, that doesn't surprise me haha when I first got this phone I was flat out shocked about the speed coming from a Droid Incredible. I would say lighter roms like Cleanrom and Bone Stock would keep it quick. We are dealing with unofficial software after all. I prefer the rooted/unlocked lifestyle way too much to go back except to upgrade my partitions with OTA's though.
