Nexus S won't boot unless charger is plugged in - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently got a Nexus S and this is my first Android experience. I'm sorry if I'm posting in the wrong section or if this is something that has already been discussed.
I am unable to boot my phone unless I plug the charger in (or plug in the USB to my computer).
The phone gets stuck at

When I plugged in the device in this state, Windows detected it as 'Gadget Serial' and later on downloaded drivers and identified it as 'Samsung USB something something' and 'Samsung USB Modem Drivers' (something of that sort)

I would appreciate whatever help I can get with this.

It's possible that your pressing the volume down key and power, or maybe the key is just broken/stuck.
Anyway that would cause a boot into download mode.

there is no download mode on nexus devices, its fastboot/bootloader.
u may be right about a stuck key

Or your chip is fried, like mine and many other people's

I doubt if its a stuck key. Guess it might be the chip being fried
Any chance messing around with the bootloader could fix this? I dunno updating it or something like that

does anyone have any info about what chip might be the issue? i did update my bootloader and that did not fix the problem.

My guess is a power capacitor, seeing as it needs to be plugged in to boot. But your phone still works otherwise? crazy.
Ok. So you have rooted your phone? if not. do it. This works. try it. - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1672708
Chances are you should update your drivers also. do this before anything. - http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Howto:_Install_the_Android_SDK
- Back up everything you need. wipe everything. START FRESH.
If you still have the same issue, youll know its hardware and not software.

Please help, volume and power buttons not working in fastboot.

My power button is broken so I need to take my phone in to get it replaced. Following the instructions to get it unrooted/return to stock, I need my phone to be recognized in fastboot. It's not happening; I've tried it on three PC's and none of them even see a device connected. It's not even a matter of drivers because when I'm in fastboot it's like nothing is connected at all.
I can't use my volume buttons in fastboot, basicaly I can't do anything at all in fastboot...no volume buttons, no power button and it can't be recognized.
Volume buttons work when phone is turned on. I can do anything I want in recovery or when the phone is up, but in fastboot I can't do anything.
Someone please help!!
By the way, ADB works perfectly but obviously fastboot does not because my PC thinks nothing is connected when fastboot is up on my phone and as I mentioned, my phone is completely unresponsive to anything that I do when I'm in fastboot. I can't use the "volume up/volume down" and tap the power button to get into downloading mode either because MY STUPID POWER BUTTON IS BROKEN!!!
Thank you again in advance....you will be my hero if you can help me with this!!!

I have tried that so much I think I'm going to break my phone.
I just need someway to return this phone to stock without expecting fastboot to work because it seems like it is unresponsive since the power button is not working. I know this sounds weird as heck but I have all the correct drivers installed but three different computers don't see any kind of usb device connected when the phone is in fastboot. I sincerely believe it's because while in fastboot my messed up powerbutton is screwing it up because it's thinking that the power button is held down the entire time.
If anyone has any ideas on how I can get back to stock please tell me. I have 100% access on my phone when it's in recovery because I can use the buttons at the bottom and I have 100% access when it's fully booted up but when it's in fastboot I can't do anything and no computer even sees a USB device connected to it.
Pleaseeee help!!

i believe that my phone thinks my power button is always pressed down too, but fastboot works here. my suggestion is that you try a different usb chord. i had an usb chord that i could charge with fine, but nothing else worked. i thought my nexus one was messed up until i tried another usb chord.

have you tried pdanets website? http://junefabrics.com/android/
go there, download the free download and install it to youre computer. its tethering software. but thats not why you should try it. follow the on screen instructions after its installed and itll install the proper latest drivers for your phone. theres a chance your drivers might be out of date.
oh yeah. Used pdanet drivers and Google drivers. No luck with either. I can adb with both but like I said the deicer is not the issue it's that fastboot is totally unresponsive so it looks like nothing is connected to the pc

Find an Odin package. Put phone into download mode by installing battery, holding volume buttons while connected to USB.

ODIN doesn't work because of the gosh darn power button being broken.
I went kinda crazy and erased everything in recovery so now all the phone does is boot straight into fast boot. I deleted the boot.img recovery everything, hahahaha (I laugh but really I'm crying inside).
I need a fix ASAP, I'm officially out of a phone.

I just got stuck in the same situation (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22884288&postcount=24) so I kept tapping the back of my phone (with the back cover off). Funny thing is, my power button now works properly again (it hasn't been working for the past week)

[Q] Bricked TF101 - any way out?

Hi
So I have totally bricked my TF101, I basically ran the ARHD Super Wipe Full script and then stupidly hit reboot, rather than actually go an install anything.
Now my TF101 is stuck on the Asus boot screen and I can't get out of it. To top it off, my power button is totally messed up and doesn't really work anymore.
When I connect the TF101 to my computer (Win7) it tries to install the Asus MTP drivers (which fail because I get error 10, the device is not working, or something like that).
I can't get the machine into APX mode (or any other mode in that case) and I can't get ADB to work on it.
Have I totally baked the machine?
[FYI I have taken it back to Asus but for them to repair it, they say they have to change the motherboard and the cost would be HK$2,400].
Thanks in advance for any tips / suggestions.

If that's the case then I'm afraid your tablet is kinda paperweight..
Try downloading universal naked drivers and install them.. that might help in installing / recognising your tablet... I'm out of suggestions....
You can try this.. let the battery drain out.. press down volume down button and then plug your tablet into power.. as soon as screen boots up hit volume up button that should take you into recovery... once in recovery do the needful.... good luck

Did you try using compressed air on the buttons? Maybe you just have some pocket lint in there.
As a last ditch effort, you could wait for it to shut down, hold volume down, and then plug it in. If your tf boots, it will respond to the boot time commands.
APX mode might be better since you won't need any button commands once you get in. I think ASUS changes the usb ID every once in a while to keep windows users on their toes. It doesn't seem to be an issue with linux.
"As a last ditch effort, you could wait for it to shut down, hold volume down, and then plug it in. If your tf boots, it will respond to the boot time commands."
If you can do this and get into recovery you'd be closer, what recovery do you have installed? I have twrp and it supports external sd which saved me when i did this. ..
Thanks guys.
I have already tried the universal naked drivers, without luck.
I was using an old Roach recovery.
Will try the other methods. Otherwise I'm going to take it down to one of the computer centres in HK to see if these guys can do anything (and hopefully cheaper than what Asus are asking for).

S/W Upgrade mode problem :(

Hey everyone. I have a LG P999 and I want to flash the baseband however when I go into S/W upgrade mode my PC does not recognize the phone . When its connected and on fully the computer sees it, but not when I hold the volume down button and plug it in. Is there any solution to this?

S3 wont budge after root

I am not the owner of this phone.
I have a Verizon Galaxy S3 that was rooted using a "teamviewer" like program by a customer and an outside source. After root was "successful" the rom was flashed and the phone rebooted and shut down (as customer recalls it). This phone is running 4.08 on a wall charger through a volt meter and the battery is reading the same if not a bit less. The vibrate during start up does not occur and the lights for charging are not lit up. Any help towards getting this figured out please let me know. Appreciate the help in advance
Well when you pull the battery and put it back and then try to hold volume up, home and power dies it do anything?
Also, when plugged into pc does it ask for any drivers? I'm betting your customer installed an international version ROM and it's hard bricked.

Just to be clear, you are trying to get it to download/recovery mode from the phone being powered off right? It won't get there when its powered on and stuck at "Galaxy S III" screen. Pull the battery and hold down the button combinations until you see "Samsung" with small blue text in the upper left hand corner and as soon as the screen goes black, release the buttons.
It almost sounds like they installed a rom that needed the bootloader workaround.. in which case I'd be stumped at what's needed then, jtag...?

[Q] Bricked : Flashing sbl1

I was trying to flash BlissPop. It didn't flash. So, I decided to flash fastboot image of CM11s 44.
I issued this command :
Code:
fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash sbl1 sbl1.mbn
fastboot reboot-bootloader
The flash sbl1 command gave an error.
I rebooted bootloader. The phone turned off, but it never turned on.
I don't know how could it brick my phone, because I've done it a few times without any error.
My battery was on 65% when I was doing all this. So, I don't suspect battery has died.
But, I'm charging the phone anyway. There is no lead, but the power bank shows that battery is taking charge.
When I connect the phone to PC, it shows no signs of any device connected. Device manager doesn't show any thing/any refresh.
I've tried to push the power button for about a minute for 5 times, as 1+1 site says.
I've tried vol up + power and vol down + power buttons. It doesn't boot it.
I've no access to fastboot, recovery, OS, anything.
Please, suggest me solutions.
Did you flash the firmware updates before you flashed bliss? There is a toolkit out there, linked in bliss thread, on how to unbrick. I'll see if I can't find it.

Thanks. I looked at it.
But, as you said I can't do anything till the phone turns on even once.
BTW, I highly suspect battery drain, because I was in TWRP for long to take backup, flashing MultiROM, etc. TWRP is known to not allow charging, as reported by some people.
Can you tell me whether flashing sbl1 could have bricked it or not? It didn't fail to flash in past and it never caused problem.
I had flashed CM12 firmware update before flashing BlissPop. Could reflashing CM11s fastboot image over it cause problem. I think it should not, because fastboot image replace all things. What's your opinion?
Had the same problem. Try first leave it charging for 12 hours after that plug it in. Then get into fastboot this is not easy. Just hold vol up and power together for atv least 5 Sec.

I guess its possible. But I would do what falastine said. Charge it for some time. With a soft brick it may not show anything on the screen but could actually be on. So be patient trying to get the toolkit to find the phone. I've heard in another thread someone's phone did in fact connect but nothing was on the screen

I'm following the thread mentioned by you.
But, the problem is that I don't know how to get the phone in Qualacom mode.
I don't whether my phone is on or off. So, I've tried to connect it with PC and pressing key mentioned in the thread. It didn't work.
If you could share your experience with me, it will be kind of you.
I've windows 8.1 64 bit.
I'm at work now but in a couple of hours i can give you more info how i did it

open your device manager in your pc and use volume up and power button while connected to pc to get into qualcom mode.most probably it would be detected as android fastboot interface just click on it and update the driver to qualcom usb serial interface then use http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/general/tool-oneplusrecovery-tool-v1-0-restore-t2991851 this tool to recover

I could understand that once my phone is detected as even unknown device, I can install drivers and try to recover through the tool you mentioned.
But, the problem is that my phone is not recognized as anything. The Device Manager shows no reaction when I connect the phone to computer.
I have disabled driver signature on my Windows 8.1 64 bit. I've Qualacom drivers installed. Rebooted computer in disabled signature mode.
I've connected my device through official cable and I've tried the key combination mentioned.
My other devices show up when connected to PC, but 1+1 doesn't.
Any other thing which I could try.
I had left my phone in charging for 24 hours, but it doesn't wake it up.
Any suggestion is appreciated.

So this is how i did it.
1. install the drivers from OPO (located in the .zip file from this tool https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/t...ks-etc.237827/ )
2. Open your device manager (Start - right click on computer - properties - devices manager)
3. Press on power + vol up for like 10 sec until you see a device showing up (called QHSUSB_BULK)
4. Download the qualcomdriver ( https://www.dropbox.com/s/vgujdut93m341qm/Qualcomm 2012.rar?dl=0 ). Right click on this devices and click on "Update Driver Software" -> "Browse my computer for driver software" -> locate the Qualcomm 2012\fre\Windows7 8 or vista folder depending on your setup. Update the driver.
5. Now the OPO tool should recognize your device. I turn off all my network connections so the usb device can't find other drivers. (in case windows overwrite the driver).

Have you tried another PC?

The hard part is that I could not get the phone detected by PC as anything.
I followed the same key combination which you mentioned. It doesn't help.
Can you tell me if battery is totally depleted, will it be possible for phone to be detected?
I've tried to charge my phone with various chargers and power banks. The battery stays cold, the charger stays cold, power bank blinks and get depleted, but phone is not vibrating even on long press.
I've tried on virtual PC, a XP machine. And on other real XP PC.
Thanks for your help.
If you have some more suggestions based on information given by me, kindly post it again.

Even if your battery is depleted it should get detected in your machine when u press volume up and power while its connected to your pc.hold it for a minute this combination should show something also keep your pc volume up to hear any port connect discconect sounds. If this doesnt happen then your hardware is dead no other option but try to give it to opo for service.
So, nothing ever comes on the screen? Does the phone vibrate if you hold the power button for 20 seconds? If so, this might be of help, if it sounds like it's bricked: http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/help/guide-unbrick-oneplus-one-t3013732

I've PC volume UP, device manager in front and phone connect. Key combination brings nothing.
So, I think I'll take it to OPO Service Center now.
Thanks for helping me.
