It's my understanding that the drivers for the NS4G are proprietary to Sprint and not open source. Therefore Google cannot completely compile the build on their own - they must pass the source on to Sprint and it is in Sprint's hands to finish it and release it. And Sprint has its hands full trying to climb back up from the bottom of the big four U.S. providers to stay caught up with ATT and T-mobile. So their main focus will be in pushing forward with new devices and new networks, not compiling and releasing builds for 2 year old phones.
I too have a NS4G and I feel your pain. As soon as my contract is up with Sprint, I'm getting the newest Nexus device on another carrier.
That being said, the following post is the Cyanogen Mod 10 version of Jelly Bean. I installed it today with no problems and it is working great. You just need the .zip for the ROM as well as the .zip for the Google apps. The OP has a link to both. You'll also probably want to hit the link in the OP for the CM10 boot screen (for some reason the ROM has the CM9 boot screen). The boot screen can be flashed after everything is installed and running, though.

No problem. Did you end up trying the CM10 JB ROM? Or are you going to wait for a different ROM or an OTA (if it ever arrives).

It will most likely unroot you, but not remove the ability to regain root. The Nexus does not rely on a security hole to gain root. If they were to lock the bootloader on a Nexus, I'm pretty sure they'd have a riot on their hands.

This is my first time doing an update, so this would be new to me. Forgive me for such a dumb question, but I know root can be regain. What about bootloader, can it still be unlocked? And how about flashing roms, kernels and what not?
That's what I'm worried about. I wanna update but I also wanna know 100% if I can easily root after
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
Well Mikey said rooting will be the same, but I'm just worried about flashing roms and kernels. Would that be any difference? Iduno....
Guys... the Evo can't be rooted because it has a SIGNED boot loader... not only because it is locked. The Nexus comes shipped with a locked boot loader, but you can unlock it easily. This update will be the same. Devs should be able to rip apart the update and make a flashable zip for the radio, which will be the biggest change.
^and i CANNOT wait for that! hopefully, and im sure i wont have to hope too hard, that we can get the other goodies that come with the OTA.
Someone already got the new GRJ90
If I want to get the update, should I wait until a custom ROM based on GRJ90 comes out or unroot my phone and install GRJ22 from Sprint back on my phone?

I usually just wait for the developers to make a flash zip or incorporate into their rom. It usually doesn't take them very long after the update comes out. They do a pretty amazing job of getting it out to everyone.

I'm pretty sure that you made a mistake unrooting. The chances of you being in the 1st day release batch is very slim. The updated rom will probably be on xda before you actually get it pushed to your phone

Hey Nexus S forum,
I've got this nexus S from my friend. I've been a hero user, but I ended up buying it for like 50 bucks (steal right?). He decided he wanted a different phone, anyways nor the time or place.
With my HTC Hero (Sprint) I know if I want to wipe my phone of music/video/pictures I can just format my SD Card.
My question for you guys/gals is how would I go about doing that with the Nexus S. I know since it has built in Storage there really isn't a way i could "format" if I am correct. Will i have to essentially just select and delete all the folders?
If there is an easier way, like maybe should i go factory reset, or maybe some other route that'd be great.
Anyways just thought I'd come here before messing with it.
p.s.
Is flashing and everything going to be similar to how i would with the Hero, or is there anything maybe slightly different that I need to do?
Alright Thanks everyone for your input.
Delete the whole sdcard by either going to storage tab in settings menu or format sdcard via cwm recovery.
Thank You
Thank you much for the info. I'll try that tonight and install a ROM i've been wanting to try for awhile [MIUI]
Thanks again for the heads up!

Flashing roms and kernels are just like any other android phone with an unlocked bootloader. Enjoy! Just make sure the rom you download is compatible with your model. There are three major versions of the nexus s. The GT-i9020, GT-i9023, and SPH-D720. When flashing a stock rom it is important to get the rom for your exact model. Example GT-i9020a for AT&T's model, or GT-i9020t for T-Mobile etc.

Hold on
Because of minor difference between two models, i9020a will need to go through some changes for it to function properly. I heard that if you manually update i9020a with i9020t ROM, you will either get an error or it will kill your reception

Settle down. It's been one day since Google announced that ICS is rolling out. They said it will be happening over the next month.
Patience.
Just flash the Neapolitan rom and be happy besides with that rom you don't loose cwm and still have root.

Why the i9020a is the last one.(except ns4g)
Maybe because it was the last one to come out...or maybe it is a way to keep from overloading the server. Only other thing I can think is that maybe they are working on a new radio for the att version

Probably a mixture of all these. I have an i9020a and I'm running the neopolitan ROM for now. It's great. I was on stock 2.3.6 with cwm recovery. Just wiped all and flashed it. It kept the bootloader and the radio.

who needs the ota now when there is so many good roms out there? I think the only advantage to the ota coming out is possibly a new radio that might be better.

It may be this month but Google never said it would be this month. They have never stated when/if the i9020a version is getting ICS. There's a difference between a French website posting false information and Google actually making an announcement. JBQ (from Google) has recently said 4.0.4 is not even finished yet. So I highly doubt 4.0.5 will be released this month before 4.0.4 is finished.
I read a few article stating the LG g3 will be releasing lollipop before the year is over... It also stated that it would be the LG version of lollipop and then att will have to test and change it to their version and that can take a few months... So my question is if we will be able to flash the universal version before att get their hands on it or will we have to wait till att modifies it for the D850

Will rooting with stump make it impossible to accept an ota upgrade when lollipop is released? I remember with my galaxy nexus, it was changing the bootloader that did that.

Rumor has it that it will be harder to get around the bootloader situation with L. My suggestion is to NOT take the ota and just flash what ever L Rom is ported if you want to keep root. At least until the devs figure out the new features on android L.
Plus, being on AT&T, we wouldn't see an ota until well after everyone else Lmao.

Cm12!!!
I have loaded CM12 on my "burner" G3 a few times (updating every night.) It is quite flaky, but it is good to see progress being made. RIght now the issue with CM12 is that one of the cores gets stuck at 100% (some say due to an NFC issue) and sucks your battery dry.
Hey community! I am currently and sadly a GS4 user with AT&T. Have had to deal with safestrap which im thankful for, never a full unlock. Just purchased a G3 off swappa. Definitely looking forward to having full control over my device without restrictions.
Read around and rooting is obviously easy. Custom recovery is what im going to be looking into next. Whats your current rom if running custom? If your still on stock, why?
Cheers

I just got an LG G3 a couple of days ago and still using my first Note (i717) as a tablet. I cannot believe how smooth and fast this thing is, originally I was going to get the Note 4 but I'd rather spend $1.09 than $249.99+tax. So here I am an LG G3 member and it's good to be back on the forums with a fresh device.
Until At&T stop acting like a little-baby-b***h and locking their devices, you can try the available tools and tricks to get by.
