Got notified of update 7.10.8112.7; Safe to update? - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Last night both Zune and my phone notified me that there was an update to 7.10.8112.7 .
I've tried searching around, but I can't find much. Is it safe to update? (ie Will I lose my unlock?)
I have a Samsung Focus S currently on 7.10.8107.79.

Bump?

I posted same thing stay away from Samsung update

Thanks for testing it out for everyone! Sorry that your phone got relocked lol.

the ability to deply XML files through the exploit is only stopped with the samsung firmware update, not the initial OS update, so yes you can do it
what tango does do is phone home to turn off your dev lock, you will need to have that disabled before you connect it up to the net

No biggie I backed up from every stage so I got it unlocked running Tango but everytime I connect to Zune it lets me know that an update is available that I don't want.

the update is actually very useful and is worth getting, all you need to do is firstly make sure you have a backup of your OS, then ensure that dev/interop unlock works, debranding, dev relock fix etc, all those wee xml updates are applied, then you can apply the update, that will give you the benefits of the newer firmware and keep the device unlocked
you can then revert to you old backup when you need to next apply an OS update, reapply the xml unlocks, make a new backup in its updated UNLOCKED state, the apply the firmware update again.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm fairly new to WP7, so I have no idea how to back anything up. I probably won't try updating unless someone has a step by step guide up. I'd rather not accidentally get stuck locked.

If you update through Zune, a backup is automatically created. You don't have to do anything at all, except install the update using the "primary" computer that the phone is synced with. You may want to save your old backup first, though, if you've updated your phone previously; got to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft in Windows Explorer and rename the "Windows Phone Update" folder so it doesn't get overwritten.

[Q] I cant update my HTC TITAN to 8773.

Hello.
I cant update my HTC TITAN to 8773.
I have tried the disconnect trick and successfully update to 8112.
But when i to the trick again and get the update 8773 the update fails when Zune at step 7 fails to backup the phone. Nothing happans and finally the phone reboots and says that the update fails.
I have tried on 3 differint computors but no luck.
When i try the cab method (if I understoud it correctly) I also get failed.
Se print for error code. It says that I dont got any space on the phone but I have plenty 8gb free. I have also tried to reset ´phone to factory defaults but the same error. What to do?
Error:800705B4
And now when I open som installed appz on the phone nothing happens, only get a black screen and I have to press the "back" buttom in order to get the the program to start correctly.
Try installing this update: http://www.htc.com/www/help/htc-titan/#download

Thx for the tip, I have tried it but there is still no change when i Try to install update after that I have installed this fix.
Still the phone dosent backup the phone in step 7 and then restarts and says update fail. Any other tip?
The only thing I can think of doing is to try and roll back to the previous version via Zune, No guarantees though, Sorry I cannot help other than that :-(
Is your phone a Branded Carrier handset? ie: at&t ? I would imagine if it is then at&t will have their own version of the update which of course you will have to wait for them to push it to your phone.

I see that other members have succeeded with htc titan, what makes my phone so different
Can I get some kind of standard bakup from somwere?
Now that's a bummer, Strange there is no option to revert back to 8112 or even 8107, Did you hard reset after 8112? maybe worth a try.
Check the Titan (2011) forums and use search if you cannot find anything relevant.

Ohh whant to have the old mango again
I have tried serching and found some problem look alike but no sollutions.
Edit: I have now installed "Dynamics7 v1.21 - Tango 8779, Full unlock" instead and the phone works nicely and is very fast

Somewhat worried...

Hi people. Just this morning, I finally got the nerve to unlock. I had to downgrade doing it. Now, I heard after unlocking, an ota will brick tablet. For some reason, the new firmware downloaded. It's trying to update, and I don't know how to stop it. Also, stock browser disappeared too. What can I do before tablet bricks?

go to the root of your external sd card and delete all the zip file(s), you probably left it there when you downgrade. Also delete file from internal sdcard in /cache/recover if any. Once you unlocked you shouldn't receive anymore OTA.

Where?
I don't say it cannot brick your tablet, but I am not aware of any reports that it does.

As said by the first responder, you can delete the cached firmware file. I do not expect the OTA to brick your tablet, but you could interrupt the process if you really wanted to.
Even with a brick, there are loads of possibilities of flashing a firmware file from ASUS' repository. Then you'd have a fresh tablet OS to your convenience. The situation you describe above does not exactly ruffle any my feathers.
EDIT: just in case you are not yet on .30 or higher... get Nvflash on there!

If you unlocked your device, there will be NO OTA update, unless the download happened before you unlocked or you may have the update software sitting in your external SDcard or in internal SDcard /cache/recovery.

It downloaded, showing a progress bar. Later I reset, and this morning, it downloaded again. It showed it actually downloading.

You must be "the chosen one", first I heard of OTA stills working after you unlocked. Just verify that you actually "unlocked", by reboot your device and it should shows "your device is unlock" during booting up. If it does, then you are the chosen one. You can update as long as you are pure stock rom, and if you have root, just use OTA root keeper to keep root then you can update your pure stock rom to the new version. If you mod/freeze system apps then the update will fail. I never heard of updating of a stock rom with unlocked bootloader will brick your device. It will brick your device if you modded or using custom rom.
EDIT: If you don't want to do through OTA, you could download full package rom from Aus site, unzip then copy the new zip file to the root of your external SDcand. Disabled wifi (no more download) then delete the update file located in your internal memory /cache/recovery. Turn off your device, go into recovery mode by hold down volume down+power button, then install from there.

Thanks. Yeah, says "the device is unlocked." In tiny white letters very top left. I hope my glitch doesn't interfere in me flashing new ROM's
Odd, did factory reset, and lost root AND twrp. Had to reflash it.

That does sound like it actually flashed something (at least partly). I would run that unlock tool another time just to be sure I wouldn't get into trouble down the road (Having an ASUS OTA flash right on top of your CleanROM/CM10/AOKP could be a minor disaster, or a pretty disastrous disaster, depending on what ROM of these you were on. Flashing over stock, well... minor nuisance, but it would be majorly inconvenient to have to flash root and stuff all the time.)

No, it just doesn't work. The updater-script inside the OTA package compares the checksums of the system apps to be patched, and aborts as soon as one doesn't match the previous stock ROM.
The only potential danger I see is the communication with the bootloader which kernel to boot - the OTA downloader (DMClient) somehow has to instruct the bootloader to load the recovery kernel to install the dlpkgfile from /cache, and if that process is still not understood by custom recovery creators (there were some problems apparently, I don't know if they are solved), you might end up with a device that only boots into the recovery and not into Android.
Thanks. I will.

[Q] how to "forget" an update?

After 4.1 ive had lines flickering across the screen. I religously checked for updates each day until it found one, but before applying it i checked online for patchnotes, where i discovered it wouldnt address any issues i was having. Ive had this update in my notification area since then but now there is an even newer update that i do want, but would like to skip the one thats already downloaded from before, because most of these updates break my device until i wipe/reset my device. id like to minimize the risks involved in the patch.
Tl;dr: how do i delete/forget a pending ota update that has already been downloaded and ready for install?

Tibu won't necessarily help you as you need to be rooted.
Either try a cold boot by holding down vol down and power until options pop up or factory reset. I would also take the latest Asus update. It fixes some issues.

[Q] Help updating LG G3 (At&T) ?

Hey all,
A while back I rooted my LG G3 (great phone btw) and and I have, what I thought I have anyways, unrooted it through SuperSU due to my phone not being able to OTA update with an accompanying error message of not being able be updated while rooted.
I have just read about Lollipop finally being rolled out to U.S Android phones (finally)
Can anybody tell me how to update that doesn't require losing all of the stuff on my phone, or if I can make changes to the system files to make it recognizable that it isnt rooted, I read threads that this is a cause.
---I have tried using Lg Update Mobile tool or whatever its called, and tried LG PC Suite to look for an update, but it says its already up to date)
Please help?

The only safe way to unroot and update is the following. You might have to do factory reset in order to get the update.

Back up your data to your computer or ext sd card. The apps you can reinstall later. I know there was an app but I can't remember now. Titanium back up it's only good with root and lollipop does not have root yet.

I use MyBackup Pro.
There's a free version also on the Play Store and it doesn't require root. It won't work as good as it could if the phone was rooted but it's a win in this situation. I sometimes even use it instead of Titanium on my KitKat roms.

7.1.1 Update Downloaded but not yet installed. Can it be prevented?

Hey all, I downloaded the 7.1.1 update on my VZW Google Pixel by accident (as I intend to root my phone later today). Thankfully there wasn't enough battery left to install the update, so I'm still on 7.1. Since I cant run root software on my work computer, is there a way to prevent this update without root? Thanks!

I believe it's already installing in the background. Isn't that the whole point of the seamless updates?
To be honest if it were me I would not risk it. I would power off my phone asap and only boot into bootloader mode once I got home to unlock right away. There's no going back if it updates and you will never be able to unlock.
I did the same thing.. had the "reboot to install update" message in my notification panel.. I just left it there with the phone on until I got to a computer to unlock the boot loader.. did the unlock via ADB and when the device restarted, it installed the newest update and boot loader was still unlocked
I unlocked it when I got home. Just never gave it enough charge to update. I also realize this is in the wrong section. My apologies to the mods, I was freaking out.

Just report your own OP using the exclamation point in the triangle in the lower left corner of your first post /!\ and ask for the thread to be moved to Q&A.
You can disable automatic updates in the Dev menu. I would recommend that you do this until you can unlock the bootloader.
