Google Now....so let me get this straight, for this to work... - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8ePUYp6HPU&feature=youtube_gdata_player
So for my phone to work similar to the phone in the video, with it "popping up" first display result instead of the stupid browser.
I have to:
1) Freeze Browser
2) Change settings to "google.com"
3) Use US Voice
4) PROFIT???
Why can't we just have a simple google now that works without the freezing of the browsers? I'd like it to popup whenever I ask it something once, not direct me to the browser. Its just a pain, when your using Google Now and also want to browse something and you have to unfreeze the app....
Is their a work around yet?
ROM: Adam G JellyBelly 0.4.3, stock kernal

According to everyone here, for us to use Google Now like shown in the youtube video as per OP. We have to
freeze browser (using titanium backup), change setting of language to "US English" (to not get that robotic UK voice) and redirect the search queries in the settings to "google.com" instead of "google.ca". It's just alot of steps to take to get this to work properly.
Essentially, If i do not do the above steps and use Google Now,
if i ask for "tallest building in the world" It will show me a list of browser searches....which is why Browser.apk is freezed to disable that feature.
Hope this helps clarify things..

I don't have to freeze browser or anything? I get the cards for searches. Are you running a ICS or JB rom?

edit** ah, it seems like the "cards feature" only works for specific type of questions for me...more indepth questions sends me to a browser search...thats normal? and the voice doesnt speak back to me...how do i get that working?

OK, first things first. What ROM are you running?
Stock TNT--and therefore TNTLite--does not "allow" switching the keyboard. Of course, there are (easy) work arounds.

Stock with performance pack. I have done read the posts and tried to do it, but
I can't get it to work. Same with the frame rate hack. If someone could walk
me though it on a messenger or even make a video that would help.
OK, did you see this post?

The part about rooting is important. I didn't have to do that since I had already flashed TNTLite, so I can't give you any insight on z4root. Should be in the market though.

Already rooted.
You'll want to get Root Explorer from the market so you can move the API file from one directory to the other. Then, Jim, who wrote that post invited stock users to private message him about an app to help select the keyboard. I've read a lot of his posts and he really knows his stuff.

where did I call you a liar? I said that it wasnt working and that a lot of other people were having issues so to put pictures to back your instruction so we can see where some of us could be doing it wrong... sheesh talk about over reacting a tad.... for example maybe Im doing a step wrong so by adding pictures we get confirmation of what we are doing, so like this step "Open browser, change ua to linux desktop, mac desktop or IE6" could you expand on this a bit more?
okay the only ua string options I see is
Android - Doesnt work get message that I need to update Adobe Flash
Desktop - Doesnt work get the same message
iPhone - Does work but so far every tv show, movie, clip, or trailer I click say The video is not available on the iPhone
so ya if you can go over the string part and let us know which your using that would be appreciated.

Well, it does,
just takes the ability to know that you have to complete all the steps listed in any instructions for anything to work.
a correct way to say it, would have been something like:
"I tired your apk, and here is a pic of the error, ( insert pick here)
I see that your on such and such rom, does it only work for that style of rom, or did I do something wrong?"
Well something, somewhere around something like that.

That's my thread I linked you too.
Be humble, newcomer
Be more respectful, to all in this community.
Give facts about what rom you tried this exact one on.
The more info you give when asking for help, the more help you get.
"Open browser, change ua to linux desktop, mac desktop or IE6" could you expand on this a bit more?

Now,
open your stock browser
Press menu
Go to setings
(Some stock browsers make you got into Advanced settings to see next option, some don't)
Select user agent
If your browser doesn't offer this option, you fail a step and the logical next step is to get a browser/rom that has that option.
so then what browser are you using then and what string are you using, obviously it would make sense to post your exact settings if its working for you. if your running a custom string then alright Dolphin HD lets us use custom so again like you said providing more information helps and works both ways.

But this will require ROOT which he doesn't have...
Clear app defaults
Go to Settings>Applications, find the Internet application (or Chrome, whatever browser you're using) and Clear Defaults. That'll reset the file handlers and the next time you click a map link it should ask you if you want to open it in Google Maps (assuming you have it installed) or any other app that can handle the request.
I think he's stuck with the stock Apple suit enforced HTC Linkify crap. As far as I know, only way to make links clickable like this is to remove it via a Root file browser.
Ahhh....good ol root...
Well I would root my phone but due to all the buggieness how ever you spell that. I am waiting on my replacement One S to come in. I will try that with clearing defaults. thank everyone for the quick replies as well....thank button being hit now XD

Google Now - Working for me!

This maybe was discussed somewhere else, but I didn't see a thread on it so figured I'd start one.
I've installed Google Now on my rig running full stock (rooted) rom and it's running fine. I did get some network error messages at first, but I assumed it was a result of the permission requests it was tossing at me. Once I allowed the permissions, things seemed to work just fine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749045
FYI - Just read that to get the full benefit of google now you must have web history and location history enabled. It'll work without it, but won't provide its full benefit without it.
That said, I guess I won't really be using it much. A choice y'all will have to make. Here's the link:

Is voice working for you and did it break svoice when u double tap home? Thanks for the info
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
Voice did not work for me.
Double tap of home gave you the option to choose s voice or search. I defaulted to search and when I double clicked home nothing happened.
I kept getting network errors even though I have both location and search history enabled. I could get weather and Olympic results quickly but when I searched for say "galaxy S3 news" it would sit there loading. I reverted back to stock search.
How to revert: uninstall velvet. Rename the apk for Google quick search. No reboot required.
My phone is verizon stock rooted with noxious ninjas script.
Voice didn't work for me either. One note: don't "install" velvet.apk, push it to system/app instead.
Also, for some reason it kept telling me units in SI instead of US. I reverted because I like voice search. Didn't try disabling the S Voice stuff which I saw may help.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
There are several things that don't work for me.
As previously mentioned, voice searching is broken.
On my xoom the Google now app displays card such as weather, traffic, and sports scores when I open it without doing any searches. This function does not work.
Also, I get notifications from Google now on the xoom. The app is integrated in the os. None of this works on the s3.
Pretty much all you will get is a replacement of the current search app that will display cards for some results using text input only. It is not worth it to switch right now. If you are curious about how Google now works, just search for demo videos.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
it's now fully functional (including voice). there's another post floating around with instructions.
thanks for sharing this! everything works fine!
Can someone point me in the direction of the fully working version? I installed yesterday and there were a bunch of problems.
Here's the "fully" working version:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29756226&postcount=2856
I say "fully" because at least for me, nothing relating to the calendar works. Doesn't see my existing appointments, can't add new ones. Voice search works fine.
So I got it installed on my Verizon S3.
I don't see a Now app in my drawer but do get it when I press the home screen mic button and can voice search and all of that works well. Set an alarm etc.
I don't see any cards though and I don't have google now settings in the google search app to change from metric etc. I flashed M6 - Mikeyxda's version 6 online/offline. I didn't install anything else. Did I miss something?
Also double clicking the home button now brings up the voice dialer, how can that be changed?
Thanks in advance!

Cool, thanks. I am concerned that I don't get the settings to change from metric in the search app too.
I realize though I should be patient and wait for google to "award" me cards and then I might get the weather settings I am looking for.
Voice Dialer is messed up
I installed Google Now and the search works fine. However, when I initiate the voice dialer via my BT headset, I hear very fast, unintelligible gibberish. When I say "Call Bill Johnson" it returns totally inaccurate results and the voice is at 4X speed. S Voice, while somewhat inaccurate, worked 80-90% of the time via BT.
Does anyone else who has done this on their S3 have a working BT initiated voice dialer?
Where are my cards!

So I guess it's been 4 or 5 days since I flashed M6 - Mikeyxda's version 6 and I still don't have any cards. I have been using Now daily to search for weather updates and sports scores from my main teams and no cards every show up when I open the app from the blue google icon. I have never seen anything in the app actually say Google Now, I just get the red mic to ask the question.
Did I miss something or maybe have a bad install? Any suggestions to try?

Figured my problem out. It was because I have a google apps (for business) account. I had to enable at settled in my domain management to permit google now for my users (aka me).
I then cleared the Google Search Apps data and cashe and reopened it and got the welcome to Google Now setup screen.

It depends on which recovery your using if it acts right with it...if you flash it and it dont show up then you have to manually install it which the instructions on how to do so is in that OP
Might be a questioned already answered. I just got my s3 a few days ago, but does google navigation work with google now. I installed the m7 online/offline version but it just sits there. Voice search, cards, everything else works but turn by turn navigation.:cyclops:
