[Q] button remap? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Is it possible to remap the menu button on the verizon s 3 to multitasking?

I'm going to think your going to have to be rooted, and maybe change something in the build prop.
Apex launcher let's customize buttons in the settings.. Just download it from the play store!

Check out this thread. This app remaps home button but on the app Page in play store the same dev also has an app that remaps other buttons if I'm not mistaken.
Hope this helps.

Yes, its possible, I have my buttons totally remapped with:
Menu button - Home/Multitasking
Home button - Menu/whatever holding it down does
Back - Back
I also made it so that the home button doesn't wake the phone as well.
In a couple days (or whenever i have time really) im gonna put a guide together how to do this in detail (i havent seen an extensive one yet).
BEFORE DOING THIS, BACK UP EVERYTHING!!! I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY PROBLEMS OR MISHAPS.
Also, you need root for your phone to mount the system as writable.
NOTE when i first did this, i only changed one at a time, and made the mistake as not having a Menu button (i had two home buttons and a back button) which proved tricky to find a way around. Just be very careful!
In short, modify the files sec_touchkey.kl and sec_keys.kl within ES File Explorer or Root Explorer under ~/system/usr/keylayout/ . As soon as you edit these and save them, the App will automatically create a sec_touchkey.kl.bak or sec_keys.kl.bak file next to your modified file. After an edit, you'll need to reboot your phone for the changes to be in effect.
I would advise to look at these files in detail before mounting the system as writable, to avoid mistakes.
Good luck!!

Nice! So it's possible to map the menu key to "open apps" after all? I tried messing with those files awhile ago but couldn't get the menu remapped to recent apps and hold home for menu.

I've looked all over, and tried a lot of things, and its proving more difficult than i had thought to simply remap menu longpress to recent apps, and home longpress to menu.
I tried lots of things such as switching around the order, adding "APP_SWITCH" After HOME, and "RECENT" after HOME.
It seems to me there is no command that would readily do this.
In order to do this, I'll have to dig and find where the command "HOME" actually is, take out the recent apps section from that, and add it to the location of the "MENU" command.
However, if you don't mind using the Menu button as a home button (for now), and the home button as a menu button, its as simple as switching HOME and MENU within the sec_touchkey.kl file (then rebooting).

Try downloading nova launcher. You can remap the keys inside its settings. I used it to set the home key to google voice search.

Good find! thanks for that. This seems to be a good app, however it is not working the way i want it to. I have Nova launcher pro installed, and the ported version of Google Now. I wanted to map the double press to launch Google now, but could not make it work. I could remap anything else though, so this is a good app to have.

I as well have Nova Prime. I could remap the home button, but not the double tap on home button. (maybe this will help someone else out as well)

make the home key wake the device?

anyone have a mod that does this?
sorry if this is in the wrong place. i'm new here.
I don't know of a patch for that yet, but I'm sure it's possible.
If we had CyanogenMod for the Charge, it would be baked into the ROM.
Someday ...
I would like to see this. possibly even disable the quick press options of the power button and reassign them to another combination. I hit the button all the time trying to do other things on the phone and then I get locked out and have to redo my pattern etc.
Widgetlocker app can do this for you.
Using Root Explorer or possibly Estrongs file explorer:
>Go to system>usr>keylayout>s3c-keypad.kl
>modify key 50 to look like this: HOME WAKE_DROPPED
>Then reoboot
Now home key wakes device!
UPDATE: Seems after it is asleep for a period of time it won't wake it anymore, have to work this out.
What application do we use to edit the value? A text editor? What do you suggest?
I use Root Explorer Long press open in text editor,
I think you can do the same with estrongs file explorer.

Sorry for the unnecessary request. I see it is in the other post.
It seems as though the front keypad module is not active once it goes completely to sleep, there for won't wake it.
If someone can figure this out, it will work just fine.

Definite thanks for looking into it. I'll try the app that bill mentioned and see if it makes a difference. I haven't yet rooted so I don't think I can do your version yet even if it works.

Are suggesting this because you have this on your Droid Charge and it is currently working correctly?
The reason I ask, is I tried a couple weeks back and could not get it working correctly.
I have it on my Charge. It works intermittently. I found that if the phone is asleep for a little while it usually does not work... occasionally it does work but no consistent pattern.
I'm also looking for a better fix than the app.
Suggestions are greatly appreciated!
The same thing happens when you just modify the key mapping, it's because the front keypad module is off when the phone sleeps.
So if it could be activated at all times that would fix it, but I imagine it may have some side effects to battery life.
This will disable the lock screen for good. After you do this fix you can wake up the Droid by briefly pressing the power button and it will go immediately to the home screen without any lock screen madness.
Go to Dialer and enter *#83786633, then press the home key
Go back into the Dialer, clear those numbers, then *#22745927
Now a screen will appear asking for the SPC Code, enter 000000
Press the Hiddenmenu Enable radio button, then press home button
To disable the lock screen (and power down pop up), go back into the Dialer and use the code *#7594#, select Shutdown and press the Home button. This, I have confirmed, does work on the Charge.

[Q] How can I change the bottom button's actions?

Hello community,
Let me start off by saying that I didn't have any luck in finding my answers in the similar posts found.
I will be more explicit about my question.
I just rooted my HTC Sensation and installed the Custom ROM Coredroid v2.4, everything works perfect but I noticed the bottom right button (next to Phone) is now a direct on key press shortcut to the Internet Browser.
I prefer my old button "action" which was the one enabling me to add widgets personalize themes etc.. (now doable by pressing and holding down anywhere on the desktop)
So I was wondering if I could change that button back to what I was used to be/do, and if not, at least make it open Dolphin mini or Opera mini, instead of default browser.
Hope I was clear enough, and that I didn't double post because I missed a similar one to me.
Thanks in advance for your answers.
I'm not yet on a Sensation, but this is how to remap buttons (physical buttons) on the htc mytouch 4g.
In app Root Explorer:
System>usr>keylayout >glacier-keypad.kl
Select "Mount R/W" button on top right then open the file in text editor.
I did the following to remap the "SMART" button to become a power off/reboot button because the actual power button on my previous mt4g stopped working...didn't want that same problem again (was overused from flashing, reboots and shutting the screen off compulsively).
Changed key 183 from SEARCH to POWER, then saved file. It doesn't work to turn the phone on and I lose these remap settings when I flash a new ROM, but I hope/suspect it may be just as easy to remap the capacitative buttons on the Sensation.

If I read correctly, i don't think he wants to remap that stuff at all. He just wants to change something in sense UI. You could TRY (I'm assuming it's the rosie.apk doing this) getting a rosie.apk from another rom such as ARHD 4.1.x and replace the rosie.apk on your phone. Try that, if worse comes to worst, you can
a) backup the rosie.apk that you currently have and just push it back into your phone if the above fails
b) restore a nandroid!
Just experiment and find out

Actually I decided to be nice. Took a look at that rom and it apepars there is a "tweaks"
Go to settings>tweaks> and fix it up

Home offscreen button during typing

Is anybody else having this issue? I am coming from Galaxy S4, where the home button is actual physical button, so there I didn't have any issues, but with OPO, when typing, many times when I try to hit spacebar, it hits the top of the Home button. Before it comes up, I do not want to use on screen buttons, I like the size of the screen and don't want it up with software buttons.
I was wondering if anyone has/could write a script to set the buttons to
(Menu)
Short press - Menu
Long Press - Recent Aps
(Home)
Short press - Nothing
Long Press - Home
(Back)
Short Press - back
Long Press - nothing
Or of there is an app that would give me a bit more control over the buttons... or something that can help with this. This is absolutely the only issue I have with the OPO otherwise I love the phone.

Because i currently am running CM12 i can't give exact insturctions but it should be somewhere in settings -> buttons -> ? over there you should be able to give the buttons other values. It is something like menu button: recent apps switcher and if you press that you can change it to a few other things. If this doesn't fill your needs, ask a bit more around I know it is there, because i saw it once.

Yes it is there, but the option for "Home Short Press" is not there, that is hard coded. At least on the ROM I run (LiquidSmooth)
What I need to know is this:
Which key mapping is for Short Press Home, Long Press Home and Long Press Menu. I am within /system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl to adjust the mapping manually, but can't seem to find the correct mapping for those 3.
*EDIT*
Ok, so found the key for Home and that is 172, but that disables both the short and long press...

Thank you for the link, unfortunately still doesn't work. Same error. I think it is because the ROM I am using is LP and LP uses ART instead of Dalvik and XPosed doesn't work with that. Thank you though for the effort

Yes, ART is the problem.
So I came up with a solution for this issue.
The file in question to be working with is /system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl
Navigate to this file using a File Browser (Root Explorer is the one I use) that has access to Root and make sure you have R/W rights.
Edit the file above in a text editor > find line : "key 139 MENU" and change it to "key 139 HOME" > and then find line : "key 172 HOME" and change it to "key 172 MENU" > Reboot device for it to take effect after you save
Then, within Settings > Buttons, you can adjust (at least on the ROM I am on), the long and short press of the Menu button.
What comes out is: left button is HOME button, with short/long press actions, middle button is MENU with just long action (set short action to NONE), and right button is BACK button untouched.
This way if I am typing, and want to hit space bar, accidentally hitting the middle button will not bring me to the main screen. It will take a while to get used to it, but it does resolve my issue.

In App Menu button

Idk if you guys are coming from a note 4 or just a general non s6 or s6 edge... but I didn't know they got rid of the long press menu... i just found out that if you long press the back button, it sort of acts as an in App Menu button. Just sharing a tip for those who may not know.

I have an app (maybe multiple) that does not have an in app menu button built in and therefore requires a menu function from the OS. I used to long press the back key in my LG G4 to get into the menu, but can't figuring out how to do it in my video surveillance app on my S7 Edge. If I short press the bottom left (two squares button), the open apps come up. If I long press the bottom left, it tries to take me into split screen mode (which this app doesn't support). If I press the bottom right key, the phone goes back to the desktop. Same results yield in long pressing the bottom right button. Does anyone know how to get into in app menus that do not have a menu button? My Uniden Guardian app requires this menu to exit out of the application or it will show in the notification area in standby mode. The only other way I can exit the app is doing a force close.

NM, it must be specific to my Uniden Guardian app... The long press back key works in other apps.
Any answer yet?
If I long press the back button in any app, I am immediately taken back to the home screen and once in the home screen, the home screen drop down items pop up. Any solutions for this?
Maybe it's carrier specific? The long-press back button brings up the in-app menu in virtually all of my apps.
On my Sprint GS7E, longpressing the Back button brings up the in-app Menu function.

I have found a few apps that close when long pressing the back, and some that show the menu properly. I had to find another super simple (no permissions required) grocery list app since Simple Grocery List was one that would close.
Here is the fix I figured out that works in this situation and it would be good to pass this on or write up a document.
Go to phone settings => Accessibility => Dexterity and interaction => Assistant Menu.
Got this from galaxy s6 edge forum have an app with need of menu button and it now work with this work around hope this helps for now my phone is not rooted.

The assist menu button is for apps that require a physical menu button to access the menu on any apps. It is used for apps that don't have the 3dot menu option it's just a work around for apps that don't have that option or that not have been updated for marshmallow
Unfortunately doesn't work on apps made with pre Android v4.0 SDK I use an SMS parsing app for bank notifications/login codes and it hasn't been updated since 2 years but works perfectly, just the settings are missing.

I found this discussion was very helpful, but it took me some time to work it out.
When the Assistant menu button is switched on (Settings - Accessibility - Dexterity and interaction), a blue symbol with four white squares appears. If this symbol is pressed, a menu pops up with a selection of available tasks. This includes (on page 2/4) a button called "More options". This is the extra Menu button that should be accessible from a long press of the Back button, but is not available in some apps.

This worked for me. It floats a circular object and you tap this and it gives you some quick one touch functions, one of those is the 3 dots in a vertical line, you tap that and your app will then behave as if you'd tapped a physical MENU button.
Thanks for the tip.

[HOW-TO] Remap capacitive (if you have(or any other)) buttons on any Android device

My original article on this was made for a Galaxy S3/S4/S5/S6/S7 devices because I didn't know that root directory organisation is almost the same.
This tutorial/how-to will guide you trough the process of remapping you capacitive buttons (or any other, I assure you'll figure it out!).
This however does not work on some chinese phones as I was told. Be careful when doing this, you can cause critical or even permanent damage to your device even if you do a smidge wrong.
HOW TO REMAP CAPACITIVE BUTTONS ON ANY ANDROID PHONE
If you're left handed like me, then you might wanna remap your capacitive buttons if you use the back key more often than the multitask button.
You can remap many other buttons such as volume keys and the power button, just use some logic and you'll figure it out.
As we progress on, you'll realize that there are many more things you can remap other than the physical buttons.
!!!DISCLAIMER!!!
I'm not responsible if this doesn't work for you!
I'm not responsible if your capacitive buttons don't work!
!!!DISCLAIMER!!!
1. You'll need root access for this, otherwise it won't let you edit the file
2. Go to Play Store and download any file manager app that supports root access (Best: ES File Explorer, Total Commander, Root Browser)
3. Open the file manager, and go to the root directory
4. Grant it root permissions if it doesn't ask in the begining
5. Go to the system folder, then to the usr folder and then to the keylayout folder
6. Long press on the Generic.kl file and click on Open as, then on Text and then select your prefered text editor
7. Now click on the search option if you have (otherwise you're gonna have a bad time searching)
8. Search for the word BACK, but search for the whole words
9. Change it to APP_SWITCH (make sure it's capitalized!)
10. Search again for the word MENU and change it to BACK (there may be two MENU words in the file so search twice)
11. Search for the word APP_SWITCH and change it to BACK
12. Save the fie
13. Exit and close the file manager
14. Reboot your device and enjoy!
Nifty little guide! I'd been itching to figure out how to change the hard-mapped ExpressKeys on my Wacom Cintiq Companion Hybrid for a while now!
The only catch is that with this thing, you have to change those mappings in a file called "gpio-keys.kl" instead of "Generic.kl", which only seems to cover USB/Bluetooth keyboard and game controller mappings. At least it's a neat reference for potential key bindings, though by no means a full list.
In other words, if you can't find what you're looking for in Generic.kl, check gpio-keys.kl or even the other .kl files in that directory. You might just find your physical button mappings there.
