In App Menu button - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Guides, News, & Discussion

Idk if you guys are coming from a note 4 or just a general non s6 or s6 edge... but I didn't know they got rid of the long press menu... i just found out that if you long press the back button, it sort of acts as an in App Menu button. Just sharing a tip for those who may not know.

I have an app (maybe multiple) that does not have an in app menu button built in and therefore requires a menu function from the OS. I used to long press the back key in my LG G4 to get into the menu, but can't figuring out how to do it in my video surveillance app on my S7 Edge. If I short press the bottom left (two squares button), the open apps come up. If I long press the bottom left, it tries to take me into split screen mode (which this app doesn't support). If I press the bottom right key, the phone goes back to the desktop. Same results yield in long pressing the bottom right button. Does anyone know how to get into in app menus that do not have a menu button? My Uniden Guardian app requires this menu to exit out of the application or it will show in the notification area in standby mode. The only other way I can exit the app is doing a force close.

NM, it must be specific to my Uniden Guardian app... The long press back key works in other apps.

Any answer yet?
If I long press the back button in any app, I am immediately taken back to the home screen and once in the home screen, the home screen drop down items pop up. Any solutions for this?

Maybe it's carrier specific? The long-press back button brings up the in-app menu in virtually all of my apps.

On my Sprint GS7E, longpressing the Back button brings up the in-app Menu function.

I have found a few apps that close when long pressing the back, and some that show the menu properly. I had to find another super simple (no permissions required) grocery list app since Simple Grocery List was one that would close.

Here is the fix I figured out that works in this situation and it would be good to pass this on or write up a document.
Go to phone settings => Accessibility => Dexterity and interaction => Assistant Menu.
Got this from galaxy s6 edge forum have an app with need of menu button and it now work with this work around hope this helps for now my phone is not rooted.

I'm seeing this too in some apps. Including XDA Premium (Tapatalk). Holding back for the menu seems to think I'm tapping the back button. The app goes back through the previous pages, then quits.

Assistant Menu gives you a few options like home button back button and also a menu button that you can use whilst in any app to open the menu as the long press back button doesn't work on some apps it's just a work around that does work

I don't get the menu button in the assistant menu?

The assist menu button is for apps that require a physical menu button to access the menu on any apps. It is used for apps that don't have the 3dot menu option it's just a work around for apps that don't have that option or that not have been updated for marshmallow

Unfortunately doesn't work on apps made with pre Android v4.0 SDK I use an SMS parsing app for bank notifications/login codes and it hasn't been updated since 2 years but works perfectly, just the settings are missing.

I found this discussion was very helpful, but it took me some time to work it out.
When the Assistant menu button is switched on (Settings - Accessibility - Dexterity and interaction), a blue symbol with four white squares appears. If this symbol is pressed, a menu pops up with a selection of available tasks. This includes (on page 2/4) a button called "More options". This is the extra Menu button that should be accessible from a long press of the Back button, but is not available in some apps.

Not happy with this at all. Whats wrong with the developers? Why take functionality away? Should be adding more! Why change things for the hell of it? Appart from just being plain annoying, buying the latest S7 edge phone out, and looking forward to trying ps1 emulation out, and cant use ePSXe save function now, or any app menu...

Hello All,
I found a fix. settings==>system==>Buttons==>Home Button. Change the action to open/close menu. or any of the buttons you see there. This works like a charm and if it's a button you dont normally use then even better cause you wont forget which one you chose.
Grilo.

Hello All,
I found a fix for this. settings==>system==>buttons==>Home button. I chose to change the double tap to open/close menu. You can choose any button on this page and then access the menu.
Hope this helps

This worked for me. It floats a circular object and you tap this and it gives you some quick one touch functions, one of those is the 3 dots in a vertical line, you tap that and your app will then behave as if you'd tapped a physical MENU button.
Thanks for the tip.

Hmmm..
Unfortunately for me my device does not have a home button..
only back button and menu button.
Thanks.
I believe every Android device has a home button, either through normal keys, softkeys, or UI keys.

Found [Button Savior (Root)] in the Market!
(works without root)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5zbWFydC5zd2tleSJd
Go to Homescreen from inside ANY App or Game even when calling someone
and open any other App or Game. Even view recently opened Apps!
After installing adjust settings as follows:
Go to Button Savior General Settings > Trigger Mode
and if you choose [Icon Click Trigger]
Then go to Button Savior General Settings > Look and Feel > Theme
and choose the [Contrast..] theme
Now an arrow (with adjustable transparency and size) will appear on the side of ANY screen that
when you tap it a bar with buttons together with the home button will appear.
Go to Button Savior General Settings > Trigger Mode
and if you choose [Swipe From Side Trigger] or [Half top swipe Trigger]
Now when you are at ANY screen a simple swipe of the screen
will bring a bar with buttons together with the home button.

Anyone Else not able to Simulate a "Menu Button" press?

I cannot simulate a menu button press on this phone. Blu's ESL customer support didn't help at all.
On the Note 4, you hold down the recent apps button and the phone treats it like a menu button press. I use a few somewhat legacy apps and not having menu press completely breaks those apps.

Current apps should not need a menu button. However, if you have old outdated apps you can simulate it with the (weirdly named) built in "suspend button." Settings > Advanced settings > Suspend option. Enable that and it will overlay a round button on the screen. When you need the menu button tap the on-screen button. It will expand and show more buttons. The button with three dots is the menu button. If you'd prefer to hide the "suspend button" so that it's not always visible you can do so by long pressing on it. You can unhide it in the notification panel.
Awesome, that works, but what a sad work around to an issue solved so much more efficiently on other devices.

Sad indeed. I will continue to poke around for another solution to this, with the ultimate goal of remapping that recent apps button to a menu. I am not sure this will be possible without root access though. Good news is there is another thread here on XDA with a bounty/reward of around $200 at the moment for anyone who can get a workable root and TWRP recovery goin for this phone. :fingers-crossed:

True, but as I said no current app should need a menu key. Most new Android phones have no menu key because it's not needed. I have about 200 apps installed and only one needs the menu key workaround because it hasn't been updated in years.

Is there a No-Root Solution to bringing the Menu Button Back?

I am migrating from a pre-"recent apps" button phone, and I absolutely hate the recent apps button.
I constantly press it by accident, and since my finger was trying to do something close to where that dumb button is I also constantly accidentally click "close all".
I put my most used apps on my home screen, I don't need to ever see my most recent apps.
What I do like, is being able to open the menu whenever I want to, with a simple button press. I use some old apps that aren't cluttered with "more" or "..." buttons, so getting the menu to come up is a huge pain (holding the back button for eternity).
I'd rather have a much less useful function mapped to long-press than the actually useful function I tend to use frequently (quickly accessing the menu for a save-state with emulators...)
None of the solutions I've seen allow you to do anything with the menu button without root.
There is a thread in the S6 forum talking about modifying your generic file, but that appears to require root and I'm not sure if the procedure is the same for the S7.
There are threads that suggest "Buttons Remapper (no root)" allows you to do this, but having installed this I can verify that anything involving the "Menu" function *does* require root for this app.
Are there any true no-root options to substituting the recent-apps button with the menu button?

I wish this was the case. You can not set "Menu" as the action for the keys unless your phone is rooted.

Softbuttons? Nougat? Huawei? Facebook?

I'm not really sure what my question is related to, but I'm sure it's a stupid one. This is my first phone with softbuttons. My previous phones were Samsungs, which had capacitive buttons. My last phone was a Note 3, which was still on Lollipop. I had always assumed that softbuttons were simply an on-screen version of what I was used to, but the behavior is different. Not sure if that's related to the newer OS, or what. The left capacitive button brought up the menu in the app, which was often redundant to an on-screen menu option within the app, but not always. For example, in Facebook, clicking the left button would bring up several options, logging out being one of them. On the Mate 9, there's a back button, which does the same thing as the back capacitive did, there's a home button, which does the same thing the main home button did, but the square button brings up the recent app list. On my Samsung, that was done by holding the home button. So there doesn't seem to be an equivalent to the menu button I had on the Samsung.
So the short question is: how do I bring up that short blue menu in Facebook with the option to log out?
There is no button menu, you have to logout from fb menu.
So, the little quick menu in Facebook that has Logout, Settings, About, and Report a Problem is only available on phones that have capacitive buttons? You have to wade through the much longer list of options within the Facebook app to find those things? It seems odd there isn't a softbutton equivalent. Or at least an option to add one.
For some reason Google thinks the menu buttom was useless and they got removed. Even Samsung phones now doesn't have it.
On the Mate 9 you have option for Back, Home, Recents, Notifications (optional).
Swiping left/right will turn on 'reachability' mode. Holding Home brings up Google Now/screen search. Holding Recents will activate split screen mode.

Ah, ok, so this is really an issue of me being used to Lollipop, and moving to Nougat. I wasn't sure what the cause was. Thanks!

Well Google never implemented the menu buttom in the software-ones, just home/back/multitasking.

Nova Launcher:Disable search apps pop up that comes up when long press in the dock

Hello. I just installed Nova Prime 5.4-beta 4 on my LG G6. I am trying to figure out how to turn off/ disable the feature where when you long press somewhere in the dock area a "search apps" screen pops up rather than the normal widget/ wallpaper/ settings menu. It only does it when I long press in or near the dock, but since this is where I am use to long pressing to change wallpaper, or add a widget I keep getting this pop up instead. I have looked all through the settings and cant find it. I read that somewhere in the gestures menu there is suppose to be a long press menu, but if thats true I dont have that on mine. Ive added a screenshot to show you the pop up I am referring to. Thanks

Thanks. Im actually not talking about the home button. Ive got the long press home button to open search. What I mean is when I long press in the area where I have highlighted the 2 pink lines on the attached screenshot it opens the search apps menu also in the screenshot. But if I am able to press somewhere in the blue area above the pink lines I get the widget/ wallpaper menu. Its a bit hard getting the right area. I contacted Nova about it and they said the only way to disable that is to turn off the swipe up to access the app drawer feature. So I just try to long press just slightly higher in the area I highlighted blue. Hope this makes sense.

Hi XDA Forum,
Here's a Nova alternative setup I like that will disable opening the the Search App form when you accidentally short tap the Home button . This setup also allows you to keep the Swipe Up for apps and the little " ^ " indicator above the Home button to open the App drawer when you actually want to get into the app drawer:
1. Nova Settings | App Drawer | Gestures | Swipe to open/close = On and
Swipe indicator = Enabled .
2. Nova Settings | Gestures | Home button | Nova | select None, and
"Only on main home page" = disabled .
This setup also seems to disable that "2 pink lines" area immediately above the home button, but below the " ^ " indicator, that Gam3r 4 Life showed in a pic above on 30th August 2017, 12:05 AM.
Regards . . .
