Hi
When I was running ICS, I used to use the search button to quickly search for things but in jellybean, it opens Google now instead. Is there anyway I can change the capacitive search back to just searching?

If rooting is not an option for you only thing that can be done is disabling search button. I have created application that prevents Google Now from opening when you hit search button. It will save you couple of seconds if you tired of closing Google Now on every accident search tap.
I am not allowed to post a link here so just search for Search Button Override on Google Play store.

Simple mod for those who don't use the search button all too often. You will need to have root permissions and ADB. This is not a rooting tutorial nor is it an ADB tutorial.
1. Download the two attached files.
2. Change the file extension to .kl
3. Push files to /system/usr/keylayout/
4. Reboot
When screen is on long press search and the camera app will launch.
Now, to figure out how to use the search button as a capture button once in the camera app

I didn't install the mod it didn't specifically state it did capture too, I thought it was just a remap from the search App to camera App... judging by your reply, I'm now assuming that it does both launch and capture pics....if so...sweeeeeet, ill login and click "thanks" on my puter

Not from the xda app...at least not yet, but I logged in and gave him thanks both on the op and the reply stating it does indeed include the capture option....
Thanks again for the great mod, I was looking forward to this mod and you popped one out pretty quickly, I'm starting to agree with everyone else that this phone is not only wicked fast, but the dev for it is too!! Soooooo glad I no longer gave my vibrant, I had that stuck on touchwiz for 2mo before any decent mods came out

Don't need ADB - Root Explorer handles it OK.
Had to download on computer, do 2. above, copy to device through USB connection, and move to 3. with Root Explorer. Then 4.

For those who don't know what you're replacing, if you long press the search button on an unmodified phone, it launches Voice Search. Just thought that should be mentioned here.
BTW, long pressing the menu key does nothing in stock. Is it possible to have that one launch camera instead of search? I use voice search in the car.

I didn't post detailed instructions for a reason. Someone who applies this mod clearly understands what he/she is doing. This replaces functionality of the search button to act as a camera button.
Long pressing menu has to be a feature in the rom, and not a simple remapping of buttons.
I tried it on the o2x and it launches the mirror app?
When i do the process through root explorer, i get a message that says the file system is read only. What am i doing wrong?
nvm, i figured it out
Hey guys this isn't my work at all, but I found this and it works! Only problem is Voice Search.

ok so I'm ready to take charge of this thread proper. Please be patient:
-So first and foremost, Not I, or anyone else is responsible to any damage you do to your device. You are renaming/modifying system files so if you screw it up you are RESPONSIBLE, NOT US.YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED . Follow the Instructions in this post and you should be fine.
-Second, thank you very much to all the kind people who are providing the modded .apks for us. I can't account for every single person but thank you all for helping with the effort.
-Third, I will try to update this post as frequently as possible, but its so difficult to keep up with all the development as it moves quickly and its hard to pick up important info in the midst of all the questions. Any 'info dumps' in PM's would be appreciated.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
UPDATE 7/4 @ 2:04 AM
These are the current instructions and download:
1.) Rename GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk in system/app to GoogleQuickSearchBox.bak
2.) Rename the "signed_velvet-voicereco.apk" that you downloaded (link below) to: "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk"
3.) Place the renamed .apk in the system/app folder and set the permissions to rw-r-r
4.) Reboot and enjoy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Download: http://cmerwin.com/P65qp6
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Current Status:
Working:
-It boots!
-searching through the text-box works
-location services work
-info cards work
Not working:
-Can't exit the app using the back button on the Google Now 'Cards' screen
-Sometimes cannot submit a typed search-query
-Voice search (Jelly Bean kernel-specific, we probably won't be able to fix :-\ )
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you can't enter your typed search:
-Try swiping away all of the current 'cards' that Google Now has given you
-Try pressing the home button, opening the multitasking menu and then swipe away the Google Search window, then re-open the app and try again.
-If none of that works, then get a logcat and post it in this thread for the devs
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Devices this will NOT work on:
-Devices that are running anything before Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
-Some devices with some ROMs (still trying to identifying a pattern here)
-iOS Devices (Suckas!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If this doesn't work on your device:
-Make sure you followed the instructions exactly
-Try wiping the data/cache of the "Google" app that is Google Now
-Try opening the Google Now app in app info and clearing data, then when the app starts up, opt OUT of Google Now.
-If it still won't work then report it in the thread, a logcat and a non-spammy post would be preferable.

It is the jelly bean search app. The developer is porting the app to ics ROMs. It is mostly better than apples Siri voice. All we need to do is wait for the dev to get voice working.

Voice works if you use swype or like me I use swiftkey 3. Hit the mic icon, ask or say what you want and it'll open the results in it's browser. Only thing that doesn't work is it does not talk back. The OP has also updated the apk a few days ago

Hey guys, I installed cyanogenmod 10 on my galaxy fit. But the default search bar is not visible on my home screens. Also I installed velvet.apk.
Still no use. Please guys help.
The same happened with me! I found no solution to this. I installed the ICS version of Google Now and GoogleVoiceSearch.apk in my GFit but as soon as I tap on it, the search crashes. Apparently there is nothing I am able to do for this. I am with the same problem....

Press the power button and the volume down button for a few seconds,,,,,,and it takes a screenshot.
The softkey was removed from the navigation bar in the builds , but still works if you do what i said ,
Hope that helps..
Try also pressing power key for 3 seconds or so and see the menu if it contains screenshot option or no
Also try setting in aokp if you can change one of softkeys to screenshot again

It wasn't removed from aokp because that button never existed in aosp. The screen shot button is part of touch wiz. As others have said just use the native android method of pressing and holding power and vol simultaneously for about one second.
good day.
Yay thanks

Yea I agree, on my epic you had 4 buttons, on the razr it had four, why are we stuck with the three and the three dot thing.

That's just the difference between the newer Android versions and Gingerbread. It just takes a little adjustment, I don't even think about it anymore.
