I'm wondering why sometimes instagram saves the photos I upload to my phone at 2048 x 2048, but most of the time it is 1024 x 1024? I'm using a galaxy s3, it shoots at 3264 x 2448 px. This happens even when both photos are cropped in only on the sides, so that both images will start out at 2448 x 2448, but then one will be output at 2048 x 2048, and the other only 1024 x 1024.
Why is this? Is there anything I can do to get photos to output at 2048? Anyone have any ideas?
No one else is having this problem with instagram?
Same with Galaxy Note
Hi,
Same thing for me, I have a galaxy Note and since the ICS update, all my photos with Instagram are on 1024*1024...
Before that, I was with a 2048*2048 resolution..
Don't know why..

I suppose it could happen after recent two updates. You better ask Instagram
I emailed instagram about this and got this response:
Thanks for your email. Unfortunately, due to technical limitations, there is no way to ensure that Android devices will always save photos at the same resolution. We're aware of the issue and hope to find a solution around it in the future. Thanks again.
The Instagram Team
Which sounds like a fat load of BS. The galaxy s3 is supposed to have the exact same camera module as the iphone 4s, same res and everything, so it not being able to output at 2048 like the iphone is wack. More GS3 owners should write in to them about this, the only way they will change it is if we let them know it's not acceptable.
The very first photo I processed with instagram was 2048 x 2048, every single one after that has been 1024 x 1024. That's a 4x difference in resolution, or the difference in being able to display the photos on computer monitors, new ipads, or in a medium sized print vs just on phone screens. The 1024 photos look way over sharpened when viewed at full res on a computer screen as well. Major bummer, I really like the instagram filters, and the app is great, but this feature gets a big thumbs down.
If anyone has a workaround let me know... next i'm going to try processing 23 megapixel res photos from my dslr and see if they still turn out at 1024.

So out of curiosity I took some pictures with my One S and an iPhone 4S to try and see if there is a significant difference in camera quality. Unfortunately I didnt quite manage to take identical pictures, but it gives you some idea at least.
Personally I think its a rather close call, so Im happy with my One S for sure.
I posted the results here.
What do you think?
Most of the pictures are not loading in full size.
Really? Thanks ill look into it!

The one S definatly beats the iPhone 4s. The 4s really desaturated a lot of colors. Their are comparisons on youtube.

I think I may have to agree with you. I find the colors more vivid on the photos taken by the iPhone 4S. It is indeed a close call though.
The iPhone 4S outdoor photo looks much sharper in the corners and upper edge (better lens?). Here is another comparison (One X / $s)
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/03/30/iphone-4s-vs-htc-one-x-cameras-compared/
Could you rename the files to clearly show which one is from which phone?
Could you re-check the focus - the HTC one looks front-focussed?
The 4S camera is better from those pictures - but others should note that the focal lengths are not the same - this makes comparisons very difficult.
FWIW I own 4 DSLRs and 10 lenses (mostly primes) - so Ive seen way too many camera test shots

You cant compare the camera quality from the iPhone 4s with the one s because of screen resolution and size. The iPhones has a small screen with high resolution and higher pixels per inch with a 3.5 inch screen. So taking a pic with the iPhone and looking at the pic from the iPhones screen, quality is going to look much better but doesn't mean it is.
Take a pic with the iphone, send it to your one s and look at the pic you took with the iPhone through the one s screen. The pic won't even load full size, they will load super tiny. And if you try to blow them up, they will get distorted. Even when my cousin and my friend that own an iPhone 4 send me pics, I always receive them really small, every single time.
There's no way the Iphones camera quality should be even close to the one s camera quality. One s should be 10x better.

I think you have a lot to learn about phones and their cameras. The resolution on the pictures taken by the iPhone 4S has nothing to do with the size or resolution of the screen. The 8 megapixles produce appropriate high resolution pictures regardless of the screen. Imagine my Canon 450d only taking pictures in 640x480 because that's the resolution of the display on it.
Sorry mate, but you have it all wrong. The One S and the iPhone 4S both take pictures at the same resolution so they are just as big. The only difference is the optics, and that is what we are discussing here.

Really? So you're telling me that a bunch of pixels packed into a small screen has nothing to do on how a picture looks on a screen?
A small screen with a lot of pixel is going to have a higher resolution resulting in finer cleaner pictures, but thats only from the 4s screen view. Like I said, take the same pic with the 4s and the one s, send the 4s pic to the one s and compare both pics viewing the from the one s gallery.
8 megapixels for both devices
iPhone 4S has HDR
One S has HDR, SmartFlash, VideoPicture , Slow Motion 60fps , Fast Burst Mode ,Backside illuminated sensor and much Sense interface complements the camera really well.
I don't want third party apps to interfere, One S hands down wins, no contest. And Android OS makes it much easier to transfer photos, iTunes is horrific for syncing. Anyone who thinks the iPhone wins is an apple fanboy.
I have HAD the iPhone4S previously, it took good photos but it crumbles when it comes to the One S.

The iPhone 4S has a backside illuminated sensor, relatively fast burst mode (as fast as you can push de shutter button) and a better lens than the One S (even if not as bright).
You also do not have to go near iTunes to pull pictures off of an iPhone. You can use dropbox, email them, have them automatically upload to iCloud and if you're on a PC, connecting the iPhone via usb will open up a folder where you can directly access all your photos, just like on android.
The amount of ignorance and misinformation when it comes to iPhones on XDA is sometimes quite amusing. I keep seeing people criticize without having gone near one and having no hands on experience with iOS.
So yes, the One S has a pretty good camera, but the iPhone's is slightly better on the hardware side. You could argue that the software on the HTC compensates with a multitude of options, so if anything it becomes a matter of wanting to play around with the camera interface or just wanting to point and shoot. I do like the HDR mode on the One better.
I don't think this is a definitive comparison.

You are still getting it all wrong. The camera and screen are two different components.
If your argument was valid, then it woulndt matter what kind of camera optics you put on the phone, as apparently you think its the screen that determines the quality of the pictures you take. So with your logic, if you put the iPhone 4S's camera on the One S, and the One S's camera on the iPhone 4S, the One S would still take better pictures. You sir, are totally getting it wrong.
I dont care how the pictures look when viewed on the phone, the quality of the pictures taken are determined by how they look either when printed out or on a computer. So the screen on the phone is irrelevant in this matter. When you buy a regular camera, do you determine the quality of the picture they take by the resolution of the screen? I am quite shocked by your flawed logic.. Though if you still dont get it, how about I take a picture with both phones and send it to you, then you can try and determine which picture came from which phone. Since you claim the One S takes 10 times better pictures, it should be an easy match, eh?
EDIT: Actually, Ill just upload them here.. Since its so obvious to you which phone takes the way better pictures, tell me if which phone took the picture named aaaa.jpg and which one took bbbb.jpg.

But this isnt about third party apps or how easy it is to transfer photos. Its simply about the quality of the image. No reason to put fanboyism into the equation.

Umm I have a problem with getting the picture clear in the contacts them self. My small thumbnail pictures are fine but when you go into a contact and you have that bigger picture at the top it looks like its a stretched out bad resolution picture and it don't seem to matter what resolution I use it still degrades the picture to a really bad level. Any body found how to get around this yet?

using the Default 6MP 16:9 Ratio you are right. I get the same size around 1.7-1.9MB. This depends on the shot I've taken.
You find also differences between the devices using the same MP because they are using different compressions. Some are stronger and others are not.
I am sure that Galaxy Note 2 shots are also not that much bigger. Using Custom Roms or AOSP/AOKP. The compression / quality level in many ROMs is changed to Maximum. If you use the Stock ROM differences are not that big.
If you want detailed Pictures u'd better go with a very good compact or dslr camera. Smartphone cams are good for snapshots. My Primary usage are snapshots and for me the most important Thing is, that i can take Pictures very fast (1-2 seconds in standby). I don't want to unlock my device first and start the camera app by searching and clicking it.

But, yesterday, for the new year, i've taken some photos with the 8X and when i view them on my computer i'm disapointed to see there are all unusable.
Does the 8X have a stabilizator for the APN inside ?
It appear that i've moved a lot while taking photos. It's not due to alcool ^^ XD

Since Google won't update the awful stock camera app and the quality of the pictures taken with the third party apps on the play store is garbage.
I will crop my pictures using a Photoshop Script until we get a new app or I get the HTC One+/ One 2014 , to which size should I crop my pictures to get the maximum resolution posible of photos taken with HDR+ on?
The Nexus 5 camera takes pictures with 3264x2448 and when you use HDR+ it takes slightly smaller pictures (3200x2368) native 8 MP cameras take pictures with 3008 x 2000 resolution, would it be ok if i just chop 368 pixels horizontally and 192 vertically?

Cropping CUTS the image. It doesn't SQUISH it so no distortion is possible. You just wont be able to see parts of the photo you crop off.
Anyway, to get a 16:9 aspect ratio from a width of 3264, You would need to crop to a height of 1836.
4:3 means for every 4 pixels across the screen, it goes 3 pixels up the side of the screen. So if 3264 is the 4 across (3264 / 4 = 816 for each 1) then 816 * 3 = 2448
16:9 for every 16 pixels across, it goes 9 pixels up. So if 3264 is the 9 across (3264 / 16 = 204 for each 1) then 204 * 9 = 1836
Or in otherwords
Resolution is always WidthxHeight
Aspect ratio is always Width:Height
Take Resolution Width and divide it by Aspect Ratio Width to get a multiplier. Multiply the multiplier by the Aspect Ratio Height to get the resolution height.

Why would you choose to crop to 3200 width? Are you using an app with presets?
3200 x 1800
16 : 9
3200 / 16 = 200
200 * 9 = 1800
So yes
OR
3200/16 = 200
1800/9=200
So yes

Ok well I can confirm, that preset is 16:9 but you're also losing some width of the photo there too. The number in my earlier response is based on the maximum width of image produced by the N5 sensor. The optimum 16:9 resolution for an image taken from the Nexus 5 is 3264x1836, however your preset isn't much smaller so its a non-issue I suppose.
Of course for anyone else reading ( @Chad_Petree knows this) it will still only display as 2mpx 1920x1080 on a HD display. A higher resolution can only be achieved on a higher than HD resolution screen or printing to poster size.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I believe the 3200 width comes from the HDR+ photos hes taking. The pictures are reduced in size presumably to better stitch the multiple images together.

Yes, by the way I'll reserve judgment until I see them, maybe they will blow me away, but all this talk about 2k screens on phones, I think it's innecesary, putting more strain on the battery, just give me a damn phone that last 24 hours with heavy use, a normal sized phone not a phablet

They won't. It is impossible for there to be any visual improvement between a 2mpx image and a 6mpx image on a 2mpx screen. In fact, since the 6mpx image has to be condensed into 2mpx, it is even possible that a 2mpx image will look better than a 6mpx image.
The only time you will get blown away with more than 2mpx is if:
1) You have a screen with more than 2mpx (4k for example)
2) You're printing the image in an enlarged format

I was talking about 2k screens, not 2k videos on our 1080p screens, don't forget that when 1080p screens were announced we were quick to say they were gimmicks, but look how much better they look, and yes I realise that it probably has to do more with the fact that they come with new technologies and the resolution is not the main reason why they look better

I'm not saying that they're a gimmick. 4k screens will become prevalent in the future. 2k seems like a pointless step to me though.
Watching a 1080 video on a 720 screen looks no better (in fact worse) than watching a 720 video on a 720 screen. The trick is, display whatever you are displaying at the native resolution for best results
...and yes, a 6mpx photo will look better than a 2mpx photo on a 2k screen. The 6mpx image will need to be condensed to fit but the 2mpx picture is a lower resolution so it will either need to be upscaled or simply not fill the screen.
However 1080 screens are 2mpx so a 2mpx photo will always look better than a 6mpx photo on the same screen because it is the native resolution of the image and screen.
So as long as you have nothing over and above 1080, a 6mpx image is pointless. That said, I prefer as full a resolution as I can get for future proofing.
Hi all!
I've had many android phones but this is my first tablet. I'm trying to find a good background using the standard wallpaper apps on play store but they all look like crap on this giant screen! Any advice? Do I need to use an app specifically for tablets or do I need to somehow modify the wallapaper?
Also just out of curiosity can someone please explain to me why this is? If my tablet as similar ppi why does a wallapaper made for a phone look so bad on a larger screen? I'm know there's an obvious answer but I'm not that savey with hardware and am trying to wrap my head around it
Thanks!

Main reason is resolution only thing close to this resolution wise is the LG g3 at 2560x1440.
Some nice wallpapers here. 2560 x 1600, 2880 X 1800 and UHD 4K at a crisp 3840 X 2160 resolution.

Here are some wallpapers at an amazing UHD 8K of 7680 X 4320. Hope you can find a suitable image.

ppi density (pixels per inch) is not the same as the actual image dimensions. You need at least 2560x1600. Higher is better.
As for good wallpapers, moving ones are much more fun. Personally I'm using this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dualboot.apps.forest
