Nexus s turn-off-screen animation gone after 4.1 Jelly Bean - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I had updated my Nexus S to android 4.1 jelly bean yesterday. I am satisfied with everything but the loss of my turn-off screen animation that previously we had for Nexus S (the oldschool TV turn-off animation).
I would like to know if this is a bug during my installation (the installation went smoothly) or android 4.1 purposely removed such animation? Such screen-off effect is one of the reasons that I bought my Nexus S and I am not willing to see it gone. I had searched the forum but so far did not see anyone facing such problem. Kindly advise me what to do.
Thanks everyone in advance!

Really? Good thing it wasn't deciding factor for me, because I don't seem to have it.

there is thread already on this issue.

Wow. Only a few topics down and you would have seen that massive thread in the previous post.

I just updated to jellybean myself and i did notice that that tv animation was gone too. So after some digging U have to go to settings scoll down to developer options and then down to window animation scale and change it to 1x to bring back that tv on/off screen animation back. Also I kept the Transition animation scale at 5x for apple iphone type of visuals.
The only thing that i do not know what is does is the option called Animator duration scale. I played with it from 5x up to 10x and i have not noticed any difference
If anyone knows a explanation would be nice.

I think it may be the "fade in" animations. I'm still trying to figure it out, but I'm pretty sure that's what those are.

That's seriously one of the reasons you bought the Nexus S??? It's a cool effect, but to be one of the deciding factors of your purchase.....??

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all replies!
For the tv animation it is just one of the many factors that help me in making my purchase, it is just like the choice between super-lcd and super-amoled can be a deciding factor for someone, but not for someone else who cannot see the difference or who does not care. During my comparison regardless of price my friends told me that galaxy s2 has better spec, better screen, better camera etc. but I chose nexus s over s2 for also reasons that the s2 model in my country could not be updated to latest android without rooting.
For the developer option method it works for me too, but I really dnt like all the extra efforts and time needed to solve these problems, it makes me feel like google doesn't take care of its old customers (my perception only).

If Google didn't take care of it's old customers you wouldn't have the JB update to complain about in the first place...

A TV animation just seems like a trivial thing to complain about in all honesty. Its a known bug on the SLCD model and no software is perfect. And is it really that hard to tap a few buttons to fix some settings? I mean, seriously.

Exactly. The OP put in more effort to make this thread than it took to re-enable the screen off animation.

is it really that hard to understand that tapping a few buttons won't fix anything? adjusting the animation scales and whatnot will fix bull****

Well... that 1x solution didn't work which was already by default on me but increasing 5x and 10x did work.

I just wish I knew why adjusting the rate at which those animations occur seems to somehow fix the issue for some. My complaint was more along the lines of people not wanting to take the effort to attempt to even get into the menu to find those settings. Of course hitting buttons ain't gonna solve anything . Well in most case it wouldn't work. Haha. Speaking of, when I originally disabled my animations, my app drawers animations stopped. Never did that in ICS.

My animation still works...

So to clear up the confusion: This bug only concerns the SLCD version. For those who don't know it, AirKernel seems to fix the problem, it did it for me and I'm running Euroskanks CM10.

the effect will only works on nexus s amoled screen, those models with SclearLCD like i9023...you can't see the effect because the timing of turn off the back light happen earlier than the effect. The TV off effect is actually there, but without backlight, we can't see it...you will see it sometimes, because of delay of the backlight due to hardware slow response... have a nice day, guys... pass this to google team and xda team, this will help them easily fix it ...!

[Q] Flash on screen when locking

I have Nexus S i9020 and I have this bad problem..
It's started when I flashed AOSP ICS Brainmaster's Mix.. When I locked the phone, I had a strange yellow-green flash on the screen.. I tried flashing different kernels - no effect.. When I tried playing with Voodoo colors - no effect.. The only "semi-cure" was: if you return to "Stock gingerbread colors" that damn screenflash was seen only on the contour of clock and "that slide thing to unlock the screen" (don't know how to name it in english=))..
I thought that it was just the bug of the ROM then.. But when I flashed CM9 latest alpha everything remained the same.. I also thought that it was just a bug of the ROM..
But now I flashed ICS OTA after the downgrade to stock 2.3.6.. And the result is the same to switching to gingerbread colors in Voodoo app on AOSP old ICS ROMs.. I still have the screenflash on the contour on the lock and that "slidething"..
It's really annoying now as I'm starting to think that it is a hardware issue.. But all other functions work just perfect, not any single issue with the screen.. I haven't dropped my phone, haven't kicked it or something (bought it in June)
Can anybody help with this please?
P.S.: there were some similar threads here, but I haven't found the cure..
I tried playing with "Transition animation scale" and "Window animation scale" in Developer Options.. Setting window animation scale to 0.5x solves the problem.. But it turns off CRTscreen fadeout.. So there is something wrong with it on my phone.. I don't want to loose it, it's beautiful..
Any advice please?
I understand that I can only annoy with this question.. But still I don't know what to do! Please suggest any possible ideas, every piece of wisdom could help!
Now I've rooted official ICS, installed Nexus Beam 4.1.0 and flashed Glados 2.1 kernel.. And the green & yellow screenflash once again all over the screen when I lock the phone..
In every other possible way the screen behaves itself perfectly.. But when it turns off I see that damn flash..
Mine does it too
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Mine does it only when i wake the phone and put it back to sleep without unlocking it
Mine has the exact same problem. It doesn't happen in gingerbread but on ics roms, even stock, it does a flash. On stock its lighter and harder to see, but if I change voodoo settings it turns green. I doubt its hardware considering it works fine on gingerbread.

So we have not only one complaint.. Something must be done to cure it.. It's really annoying as it is the only thing that works not fine on this phone!
Can somebody of the developers please comment on this problem?
Has someone found an answer to this?

I've seen this discussed somewhere already, but can't recall where!? But to my knowledge, if I can remember correctly it can be corrected by resetting voodoo control settings back to 2.3.3 defaults! Something to do with gamma settings I think! But obviously you have to be rooted to have & use voodoo control!!
I've tried a couple of those settings, but it never totaly get rid of the problem, it's just less visible. But since I know it's there, i'll always be seeing it XD

Apps flickering software or hardware issue?

You know when your in an app then go back home and the widgets need to reload them selves its like that but with all my icons they keep disappearing and reappearing until I open an app or lock my phone then unlock again. I noticed it twice so far and the last time I was downloading a bunch of music to my phone so might have something to do with lag even though there shouldn't be any problems with 2 gigs of ram.

Ive noticed this too but on mine they just flicker real quick. I'm sure it has something to do with TW. It is rather annoying, i'd like to know more about this.

I think it is a software issue. My screen flickers when I flashed CNA and BlackBean but does not flicker with AOKP. My guess is that AOKP is more stable and less buggy?
I would suggest going into your developer options and disable HW overlays. This works on AOSP ROMs and it should work on TW ROMs also.

Will do. But quick question, wouldn't the developers of CNA and Black Bean have figured this out prior to the release of their custom rom?

I would have thought so. But then again there roms are probably built from a modified source and compiled. Once compiled they probably flash it to make sure it boots. If confirmed to boot they probably upload the original. In that case it would not have the option enabled. That is my educated guess on the subject. lol
Screen flickering on AOSP based roms is nothing new, been a known issue for a long time. Some things get fixed then break cause of something else was changed.
Flickering
My phone is original. No Root. Screen just started flickering the other day. I have had it since August. I did nothing different to the phone. Verizon claims I damaged the phone in some way. I have not done anything to damage it. If I open the Gallery on the phone, it starts going crazy. Does not always do it. If I use something like Google Earth or Maps and then open the Gallery, I get horizontal lines across the screen flickering up and down randomly. Swiping gets sluggish when all this happens. Almost like the memory fills up. I look in the memory and it is not even using 1GB, but is close to it when all this happens. Not sure what the heck happened to cause this issue to all of sudden start occurring.

DPI change on Jellybean?

I sucessfully installed jellybean but I can't seem to change the lcd density..
I have in my build.prop ro.sf.lcd_density=160 and nothing happens.. I still have it set to the original, 240.
I noticed theres a new options in jellybean's build.prop ro.sf.override_null_lcd_density=1, I commented this out and also set it to 0, but still no go.
Any ideas? I've tried various apps and they all have no effect
uh, I may be wrong, but how is you changing a setting going to have a physical change on the hardware that's in your tablet?

It's NOT a physical change - Changing the LCD DPI Density has been a method used on most versions of Android for years. What rock have YOU been under?
Yep. Same here. Can't find a way to get 160 back to life.
This is pretty much a worst thing Asus could do to us. Or is it JB thing?
Don't know, but i'll try to find a solution to this as i just can't look at 240 density after using 160 for so long.
Oversized icons are really not nice :cyclops:
Hmm this might have something to do with my sensitivity issues too. Before in a certain game I could rapidly tap a button and it would go through. Now on JB it's not registering my rapid taps and I have to tap slower. Looking all over the place for a solution!

I'm on CM 10(JB 4.1.1.) and DPI change works through the build.prop without any problems. I wonder if Asus did something to block this in latest update..
Could it be related to the kernel not supporting it?
I mean, they probably changed kernel, so maybe they didn't include this in the final release.
Why is beyond me and my understanding of their logic.
I hope this is not the case.
hm.. this is hard to get used to 240 again. i hope theres a way around this

Could you please explain me-a-noob, what's so shocking about the different DPI? I thought the DPI by default remained "at its best setting". Apparently it is not...
Why would ASUS set the DPI in a way, which would not use the full potential of the screen?

It tricks Android into making each pixel smaller. Which means all your icons, text, etc shrink on the screen. This gives you more room on your screen and makes mostly everything look a hell of a lot better. If you do a search for DPI on the general forum, you will find a thread about DPI with screen shots that show you the difference.

Why not just try out a custom Rom? At the Moment Baked BlackBean 4 and unofficial CM10 10/1 versions work very well and give you all kinds of settings and tweaks to work with as well as theme chooser. The only thing that isn't working (well or at all) is GPS and I expect that will be fixed in short order, now that the official TF700 JB update is out.

Don't get me wrong, I used CM9 on my TF101 and use it on my phone, BUT I like a stable ROM with barely any noticable issues as I really do use just about everything on my devices, including the GPS. For now, until the custom roms make a bit more headway, I'm not going to switch.
Any luck?
Bump on this topic, no go on lcd mods in build.prop
REALLY would like to go back to 160...i may downgrade if there is no workaround...
I can also confirm lcd changer apps dont work either, got soft brick with one and the others didnt change anything
Agreed, any news?
Has anyone contacted Asus about it and asked?
Or, has anyone tested DPI changes on other Jelly Bean devices such as the Nexus 7 and seen if it works there (which would indicate Asus intentionally disabled it)?

Is everyone else having issues with lag?

I went from the HTC One to this, and I am a little disappointed here. The HTC One was beautiful, great, etc, but I went with this phone for a a more future proof reason. The thing I am confused about is how is this phone lagging? The One did not lag, and I am not by any means trying to start up a debate between the two, but why does this phone lag? Anybody experiencing odd lag? (opening closing apps have a hiccup, widgets, scrolling)
The screen seems to have a good amount of ghosting, but I assume that is because this is a PenTile super saturated screen, so it won't be as smooth movement as an LCD screen. (I freakin' love this screen, by the way)
Also, Samsung, I know if I raise the volume it could possible damage my ears, quit popping a message up every time I do this.
Also...
For the stock browser and Chrome, the screen slightly dims itself upon opening, doesn't do it with Firefox though.
Small things, small gripes. These small grips bothering anyone else?
It seems odd, this is my first Samsung device, but it seems like it's not a consistent experience. It just launched, I know, but I did not think one of the big brands would have these issues.

That did nothing, but I changed the animations to 0.5x and they go so quick, I don't notice it anymore. I sincerely hope that Samsung/AT&T push out something to fix this, I don't feel like a phone with an overclocked Snapdragon 600 should be going through this.
Set animations to zero and the phone will be even quicker. You won't miss a thing. Good luck.
The lag is very bad. It really makes me wanna throw this device against the wall. Coming from an S3 and Note 2 this feels like a huge downgrade, seriously.
I do know though that now that the boot loader has been unlocked, developers can start making custom roms. That and I know there will be many updates. The lag will not last forever.

That doesn't do anything. The browser, messaging app, and gallery all lag within. Samsung needs to properly optimize their software for the Snapdragon 600.
If your using Nova launcher, go to Nova Settings - Look and Feel - App Animations. Change it to ICS or slide. This has removed any stutter for me with the opening and closing app transitions.

You guys aren't addressing his main problem. He's upset about lag within the apps themselves.
To Op, just be patient and either Samsung or devs here will address it. It's clearly software related.
Also, the screen darkening happens if you have certain battery saving things turned on. Is your energy saver on?

I think he's concerned about a few things. Stuttering as I mentioned before. He mentions opening and closing apps have a hiccup. See below.

I've completely disabled any energy saving, even auto adjust screen tone. This happens only with Chrome and stock browsers. It's a light dimming from brightness being full, seemed odd.

Yes, you're right. They have an odd stutter. The sad thing is, we shouldn't have to do anything to stop this from happening. lol
Also, the stutters happen even when opening/closing/navigating the settings, and I saw it stutter a few times closing the app drawer, that one surprised me.
How do you guys feel about the ghosting/tracers on text or objects when moving quickly?
Oh wow, Force GPU actually did it for me. Thanks! Lol

A couple of quick suggestions:
-Hard Reset when you get the phone. A few people have commented that after a re-flash the phone runs smoother
-disable animations and the screen unlock ripples/light BS. The ripple caused issues with the GS3, so this is just an assumption on my part.
-Force GPU helps
-Freeze and apps especially bloat you don't use.
-Since this seems to be a common issue for everyone, I would hope that Samsung/Att will have a small update in the coming months. I will not hold my breathe though.

This actually does help a lot to reduce the lag.. Did this a few days ago and it has def helped!
I felt the same way about my S3 for a long time until I finally flashed tasks AOKP with ktoonz kernel.
For reference, I think the size of the stock rom on the s4 is somewhere around two gigs as opposed to tasks AOKP which was around 500 or 600 MB's.
I haven't even activated my S4 yet because of the frustration I know I would endure when switching between apps, or texting, or pretty much doing anything.
My S3 is RIDICULOUSLY fast now so I have the utmost confidence that once the Verizon phone is out and the ROMs start rolling in, all the lag will be gone once you get away from TouchWiz.
[edit] Task I see you lurking around the S4 boards. I don't know what it all means, but I LIKE it!!!

Maybe AT&T will push a similar update to help with performance issues.

Am i the only one with lag on jelly bean animations?

on any JB rom i have ever tried, i cant seem to get the 60fps animations working properly. For example, when opening the messaging app, sometimes the animation is extremely smooth, but most of the times it is definitely not 60fps. Any reason for this?am i the only one with this issue? If it works sometimes @60fps it means it is capable so why isnt it always smooth?if i change the animation on nova launcher to the ICS one, it works perfectly...
Maybe the problem is the kernel, change it...

lol done that like 100 times. Its the phone, its getting old...checked with my friends phone and his phone doesnt have 60fps animations either. I guess project butter is to much for our phone to handle. Whats strange its that sometimes the animation is perfectly fluid, but the next time its not...even if its right after.
Get a galaxy nexus. I also have this problem, but it's minimal when i don't install much apps.

I agree with this. If you have the money there are some available on Ebay for $120. But that is only if boot animation lag is that big of a problem for you
