Thinking about getting a GS3- Verizon Wireless (CDMA) - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I'm not 100 percent sure but just thinking for now. I love the Razr Maxx battery life and I love the stock ish feel of their ICS. I came from the GS2 before this RAZR Maxx. Loved the Camera on the GS2 and the fluidity of it too. I had the Sprint version so data speed was horrible.
My biggest beef with that phone was the wireless radio was really bad and I need to rely on phone calls and text since I got kids, what if get an emergency call? And I work in a basement ish area during the day time so I knew I had to go to Verizon and Motorola is known for good wireless radios.
What I hate about this phone is the lag time to time. It lagged on GB and on ICS. And I really dislike the camera, taking still pictures and recording video it both sucks to me compared to my previous GS2 camera. I'm cautious of rooting it since the boot loaders are locked. Assuming a custom rom can overcome the lag issue. I use to root and flash stuff alot on my GS2.
I guess my questions are....
How is the wireless radio on the GS3 Verizon's version? Is it reliable?
How's the battery life? I know it won't compare to my RAZR Maxx but any input will help.
Are the boot loaders locked up? Is rooting and development for this phone pretty awesome?

No offense but your questions are answered all over the place if you just read. Verizon version has a locked boot loader. Battery life sucks. Many people say wireless is pretty weak but many others seem happy with it. So far I'm finding it acceptable. The call quality on my end is great too.

Signal and call quality have been good for me.
Battery life really depends on your own use case. For me it's been good but not great. I can get through a day with normal use but I still feel a little anxiety whenever I need to use it heavily.
The bootloader issue also depends on what kind of user you are. If you just need root, it's already there. If you want to try a few major ROMs, they will be there in one form or another, if not already. But if you want to have tons of ROMs to flash everyday, the bootloader might be an issue. Devs are working on unlocking the bootloader and it looks promising, but there's possibility it'll never be unlocked and will affect ROM development.

My battery life is amazing. I leave WiFi on I'm on 4 g and I leave my gps on I get at least 24 hours of battery life on my phone is on stock. You can always buy a portable charger from verizon call quality is good never had any static coming from sumbody it is the heavy into development this phone is actually does not need it

My battery is amazing as well! Im able to get 4 hours of on screen time no problem and the radios are solid. I do have the locked bootloader though but then again im not a crack flasher or anything so ill be fine

Thanks for the replies!! Any input is great. I consider my self a light heavy user depending on the day. I use about 4 hours screen on time average. My RAZR Maxx can get 7 plus of screen on time depending on what I do.
My area Verizon's 3G is great. I get like 2.3 - 3 MB download speeds consistent so I only use 4G when data speeds are being slow on 3G.
Another question, is there an option on the Verizon GS3 to turn off data all together? And options to toggle back and forth from 4G to 3G?

There is an option to turn off mobile data either in Settings or just pulling down the notification bar. Toggling between 3g/4g is not included. You must download an app, something like "Phone Info," to toggle between 3g and 4g.

Your battery life will never be as good as the Razor Maxx. I had the Maxx and i loved almost everything about it. I switched the the galaxy s3 and do not have any regrets at all. I can easily get 4+ hours of screen time.
I am actually pretty happy with the galaxy s3. I have not had any desire to do anything but root the device. The only reason why I rooted the device was to keep the OTA update from killing my unified search.

Thanks for the heads up!! Yeah the RAZR Maxx battery life will be hard to even come close to. I'm just thinking though, nothing for sure yet.

I'm using GS3 from the gnex. I was not happy with gnex reception qualities. My GS3 reception experience appears to be about the same as my gnex. Which is to say unimpressive. Good enough in strong signal areas but venture off to the fringe and prepare to have no service while a razr next to you has decent service.
Battery life on GS3 is great compared to gnex, very happy with battery life. Other than Verizon's ham fisted sync services and the wifi popup even when wifi is *off* I love this phone. However, I wasn't impressed with gnex radio reception and GS3 seems about the same. Anybody at work have one you can look at to test?
All you can do is try it out.

I was mixed as well (coming from an iPhone) but I would definitely recommend it!

I'm running the vzw S3 and love it, on CM10 Jelly Bean rom.

If I do buy the GS3 off contract, to transfer my plan and number can I just use my current 4G LTE simcard that's in my RAZR Maxx? Or do I need to go through customer service/Verizon store for that? I might have to sell my current phone first, so that money will contribute to buying the GS3.

Only if your Maxx currently uses a microSim (which is what the GS3 uses). If your Maxx uses a regular sim card all you do is take a trip down to your local VZW store and have them give you a micro sim. Its free too!

Just switched last night and very happy with service so far. Anything interesting going on with this phone yet. or should I just hold off till jb releases? I am a serious flasher. probably flashed 20 different roms on the note before switching. Not to mention nightlies.... every night. Or so. Size is nice but a hard adjustment from 5.3. I'll get over it considering how fast this booger is.

Phone has only been out a couple weeks so...so far so good. For as early as it is I am impressed. Currently I am on cm10 and while it has a few bugs I am excited.
Welcome aboard.

Since we have a locked bootloader our version probably isn't getting an official CM release, so development on that front has been slower than on the other variants. The available pre-alphas work well (albeit with a substantially longer boot time) but have major issues with data and thinking your phone number is unknown upon reboot. This results in being unable to send MMS.
I'm personally waiting for things to become a little more stable before I dive in, but others already have. Since the dreaded IMEI issue has a fix I can recommend at least checking it out. Google Now is pretty nice.

What made you change to Verizon? Just curious lol. I think at&t has the best selection when it comes to smartphones.
I use to be on at&t also. Too many dropped calls and at that time I was there, no good smartphones besides the iPhone.
Service and customer service wise Verizon is the best out of at&t, Sprint, and T-Mobile in my experience. But I hate Verizon for locking down these boot loaders!! I currently have a RAZR Maxx with a locked boot loader too. It sucks for us folks that like to try different roms and kernals.

Well I barely was able to make a phone call at my house and when I was able to get thru it would drop 4-5 times. Data was a joke. Every where I go I really dont have good speeds. And the data speeds fluctuated too much. And considering Verizon got lte in my area it was a no-brainer for me to switch. Cost me over $500 in etf, but I could care less I'm so freaking happy with Verizon. Especially since lte is 30 mbps at my house. It's a downgrade to use my WiFi lol.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
I also get good Verizon service at my home and everywhere else haha. Fringe areas the data may slow down but I'm always able to make calls and text when other people can't. Verizon is a beast! at&t gave me slow data and too many dropped calls so I don't see why they're getting all the tight phones! Or maybe Verizon is just picky with what they want in their selection.

Thinking about coming to the dark side..

What's up One X peeps? I am currently with Sprint on a Galaxy S2 in the Bristol, Tn area. Not so great of service and it is only 3g coverage for Sprint here so far(no plans in the future to add LTE here as far as I know...which is stupid because the race track is sponsored by Sprint and yet they have the worst service in the area duhuh..)...aaanyway, I am considering AT&T because I can pay a little extra and have 4g almost anywhere I go in the Tri Cities. So I am torn between the S3 and the One X. I have had Sense phones and touchwiz phones so I am really asking if anyone would care to share what they love about their One X and why they chose it over the S3. They are both remarkable but I am honestly leaning toward the One X because it is different in an appealing kind of way. I am just an average user other than rooting every phone I get my hands on. Browsing, texting, listening to music with headphones, email, etc. I had a Nexus S 4G before the S2 and a Hero before that. I have loved all of my phones but I kind of want something different right now. It also helps that the One X is on sale for $99 until September.
Funny you mentioned the race track, I'm right by Pocono and there is no lte either lol, oh wait there's no service at all by the SPRINT sponsored race track! Lolol. So glad I'm on att now

DO IT. I was with Sprint for 5 years, and ever since they got the iPhone my 3G speeds were simply atrocious. How good is having unlimited data when you're pulling 0.5mbps down(on a good day)? And I'm in a network vision completed area! The difference really is night and day, and so damn worth it.
Also, battery life on the One X with LTE is better than my EVO 4G, EVO 3D and Galaxy Nexus ever had on 3G... TIMES TWO. I've left my phone unplugged for eight hours when going to bed, to wake up and find out it only used 2% battery. ON LTE.
There really is no contest here. It's even worth paying an ETF. I sold my (mint condition) Galaxy Nexus on ebay for $350 and paid my ETF with that.
Good luck!
I was a Sprint customer for a decade and finally got fed up with their data speeds. What's the point of unlimited data if you can't even use it? After a brief trial with Verizon, I made the move to AT&T in January and couldn't be happier. The HOX is an absolute beast of a phone and coupled with AT&T's blazing LTE speeds (and even their fast-enough HSPA+ when LTE isn't available) it's pretty much unstoppable. I had heard horror stories about AT&T's customer service before coming over here but my experience with them has been nothing but positive, and I have tested the patience of more than a handful of AT&T reps since making the move. They are friendly, somewhat knowledgeable, they do try to help as best they can, and best of all- they are incredibly easy to manipulate. Do it man, you'll be glad you did.
The main reason I left sprint was due to the horrible 3G speeds. You know how bad it feels to see buffering every 5 seconds on sprint watching youtube? The slowest speed I've got on ATT was 6mbps, thats more than enough for anything I need to do. Sprint, I was barely able to do 0.5mpbs with full bars, pathetic.
Good bye Sprint, You won't ever see me again. I'm paying $10 more a month, but its we'll worth it.
Yeah, I am thinking it is going to be worth the transfer. It doesnt seem too crazy to get root and unlock the bootloader from what I have read so I am sure I can manage. The only work arpund I will have to find is the storage but dropbox is offering the 25gb space still if I am not mistaken.

The latest firmware version (2.20) is not currently rootable, although its being worked on. No root also means no bootloader unlock. It seems that based on reports here, a lot of newly purchased One X's have 2.20 pre-installed. Maybe you can find a store with some older stock (1.73 and 1.85 are okay). But if you need root and unlocked BL right now, be aware when buying.
Also, I think AT&T stopped supporting the Dropbox promotion a while ago.
I'd recommend the secondary market vs buying a new one at this point.
Att gave me a $175 trade on my Epic 4G touch when I came from sprint a month ago...best decision I made in a long time.

come on over! I honestly don't know how people put up with Sprint's data speeds. Also, I don't have any complaints with AT&T except I'm patiently waiting for LTE in Denver (HSPA+ is good enough, but why put up with "good enough" ). I've been with the company since their Cingular days and won't be going anywhere for a while (unless I jump over to Straight Talk to save some $$)
The S3 has better hardware specs but the HOX is better looking.
Basically it comes down to sd card/more ram/removable battery vs better screen and build quality.
IMO the S3 is ugly as sin, with a dated, pedestrian design (seriously, a physical home button?). But some people like it.
If you're a power user you may be better off with the S3 because of the better multitasking (more ram) and storage space. If looks and design matter to you, go with the HOX.
I came from iOS, so the sd card slot and battery were not really a big deal, while the design was.
AT&T's coverage is not as big as Verizon's but the data speeds are nice. Their customer service has always been pretty good on most issues (exceptions being the various things they like to lock down--but Verizon has always been far worse about that anyway).

U know how ppl who have sprint deal with the horrid speeds? by never experiencing good speeds..lol..I've never saw over a mb/s unless on my airave or WiFi....I don't even attempt doing stuff when I'm out and about that requires more than minimal bandwidth..but I'm in the early 2nd round of network vision so hopefully that will change ..if 6mb/s is slow for you then I'm jealous..can't imagine u need much more than that for anything..YouTube app still buffers for me on WiFi when playing hd content..and its 20 down..anyone else have that issue ?

The LTE service that I get is so fast, there is ZERO difference from WiFi, and can even be faster in some cases. When I start watching a video on youtube and switch to HD, it starts playing immediately. I can't even begin to explain how much faster it is compared to even Sprint's solid WiMAX service here in Boston.
Speaking of WiMAX, LTE on AT&T runs at 700mhz, so LTE signals penetrate buildings even better than 3G and voice if you can believe it. I remember with WiMAX my signal would drop if I stepped over a shadow.
And while I've seen bursts of up to 60mbps(I kid you not), It's the insanely low ping times(about 30ms) that make you feel like you're using WiFi.
I think I will go for it. It will cost probably $10-20 mpre a month because pf the discpunt I get with Sprint through my bank...but again, I am tired of waiting for service and having to constantly roam with roamcontrol just to make a phone call in my apartment. I will try to get time to give more thanks later. I believe I talked myself into it earlier today. Design and feel mean a lot to me. And if those Apple fanbois are happy with no removable battery or sd card then I can manage too lol. Thank you all for your input!

Should I trade a Razr Maxx for an S3?

I have a chance to trade a razr maxx for an s3 straight up. Should I do it? I got the razr maxx for their awesome radios (gnex didn't work well at my house). The maxx's radio is great compared to gnex as I can actually talk on the phone from home which is in a low signal area. Since buying the maxx, verizon did expand their 4g coverage in my area and I actually get 4g in my house some now which was never possible with the gnex before the expanded coverage. I am wondering if the s3 has better radios than the gnex and would suit my needs. Thoughts?

I really don't mind about the signal that much, even it' show 2/3 bars all the time, but I have no issue making/receiving phone calls or text.
I have had the Nexus and Razr and hands down the S3 is just a better phone all around. Yes Motorola has the best radios but the S3 will be a better phone for longer.
Thanks guys. It seems like a deal that is too good to pass up. Think I am going to just go for it. Thanks for input.

[Q] Coming from Epic 4g touch worth it?

With Sprint, and I've had it with E4GT battery issues since ICS, but hooked on Jelly Bean from AOSP ROMs
3g is very spotty in Cincinnati, but 4G works pretty well. No LTE in my area for probably a year, so I need something with 4G to buy time, no sense in paying up for a GNEX that will only have 3G speeds. I don't do any gaming or streaming, just need JB smoothness with as little LOS as possible, and stable data connection. Are these issues with the Sprint Nexus S, and would the S be a big step backwards due to single core given my needs?
How is it in general with JB for those that have gotten the update?

Creepy, i was just reading your other thread and came back to this one to reply, and you are already here...
So did you get your NS4G from sprint through TEP? I stopped at a couple stores and called the SERO people this morning, everybody felt that ebay or craigslist would be the only way to track one down. Don't mind doing that, but would love to have an official channel for less BS.
I'm due for an upgrade, but anything new has LTE, which won't come to my area for at least a year, but 4g is pretty solid. No sense in paying top $$$ for a phone that is only 3g due to geogrpahy. NS4g looks ideal to buy me some time.

No they took my f**ked up ET4G. They include a pre paid shipping label to send the ET4g back. You keep the Nexus S 4G. All this was done over the phone. When you get customer support. Ask for Tier 2 tech support. Make sure you tell them you have done multiple factory resets and battery life is horrible compared to gingerbread. Also tell them you OTA'd to FF18 then a week ago you got another OTA update to FH13. If you don't tell them this they will make you go to a sprint store.

I had an Epic 4G (the original, single core keyboard) and switched to a Nexus S 4G because I didn't use the keyboard and didn't like the size. I am now dumping the Nexus S 4G for a Photon or E4GT or Evo 3D or ANYTHING with dual core 4"+ screen. I have a Tegra 2 based tablet and that thing flies, with way more installed on it, compared to my Nexus S 4G. I know you said you didn't do gaming, but if you do a lot of multitasking (for example, jumping between a reading app, to a web browser, to a text message, back to a reading app) - the speed difference between a Nexus S 4G and something with a dual core CPU is pretty substantial.
Pulled the trigger, will update later this week. At first glance, I'm pretty happy. I don't mind the smaller screen, actually kind of like it. Tiny stock keyboard stinks, but Swype works fine. Both 3g and 4g speeds are back where they belong, haven't seen that since June/July pre-ICS.
First thing it wanted to do was update to JB, even before I had confirmed it was activated (it was connected to wifi). This was my problem, having seen JB, I couldn't go back to GB on the ET4G, which is apparently necessary for mine to survive a day. Too soon to say anything about battery life, aside from when I went to bed around 11 it was at 60%, woke up it was at 25%. It had wifi connection, and it had just been hard reset (stock rom for now) and activated, so surely there was a lot of settling going on. That would have killed my e4gt in an hour or so.
I do notice a bit of lag jumping from one app to another, but not enough that it bothers me. Apps and homescreen themselves are very smooth. Chrome seems a bit slow to get up and running, but works fine. All google apps want to update themselves now, maybe that will help.
Need to figure out how to wifi tether, but haven't started that yet
So far so good, will report again

GSIII Poor Signal

I am a new verizon customer and have the GSIII. I get about 2 bars max in my house and can barely make a call in my basement. Most of the time it hangs around 1 bar though. So i've been reading through the threads and can't seem to find anyone that has posted a fix for this. Is there one? It seems like there have been quite a few people with this issue. I expected to have better service when I switched to Verizon, but am slightly dissappointed so far. Hopefully it is just the phone.
1) Is there a fix?
2) Can I exchange my phone (it has only been 2 days).?
3) What is the best phone with Verizon? (i'm not an iPhone fan)
Thanks for your input!
We can't fix poor radio and antenna design. You can flash different radios to find the best one for you that's about it for this phone. Your other options are to call verizon and tell them to send you that micro cell tower that plugs into your modem and acts as a personal tower. Other choice is to switch phones. From what I hear motorola is supposed to have the best signal

He can also flash the ROMs ported from other carriers as those seem to have improve signal strength. I have tried Wicked Sensations,Goodness and Darthstalkers ROMs all have had an increase in signal strength.

If you just got your phone, I'd trade mine for the newer DNA. Samsung phones are notorious for not working well on Verizon's network. If you don't need your phone as a phone they are great but if you need a PHONE to be a PHONE you should switch while you can. There is always going to be someone here saying they have great signal so you must have gotten a defective one or you aren't using it correctly (?) but the truth is if you don't get good signal now - you won't a week from now. Switch to a better PHONE for Verizon's network which is good.
While the DNA is not perfect it works as a phone well which the S3 does not. The Motorolas seem to have much better phone reliability than the S3 (I just don't like the Motorolas as smartphones for some reason).
If you look through this forum you'll find tons and tons of posts about bad signal, weak signal, dropped calls, choppy calls and you'll also find tons of posts by people saying they don't have that problem. I travel a lot and use my phone about 3000 minutes a month so I can pretty much tell when a phone is good or bad. The S3 isn't the worst I've ever had - the Nexus was the worst and the EVO3D ranks just a little better than the S3 but all were bad as phones for making phone calls. I'm probably posting on craigslist to try and trade my S3 for the DNA as I don't think I can tolerate the crappy call quality on the S3 any more. I know my phone is bad because I have traded my phones with a friend or colleague to complete a call and they are on Verizon and while the S3 sucks, their phone will work fine.
Thanks for the input all! I contacted Verizon today and they did a soft reset, seemed to help a little bit. Still not quite the service i was expecting after making the switch from Sprint. I think i'm going to look into the DNA phones or something else and see how that works out.
My signal is as strong as wife's iPhone 5, FWIW. Eons better than what I had with Sprint, although Verizon has its share of dead spots.
You have 14 days. Never switched s phone out but I would try as many as possible to get the best one for me. Good luck.
