[Q] How to use Titanium Backup before flashing to a new rom?

Hi.
I want to flash anew.
I want to backup my apps.
I do not have an external SD card (i mean - i do, i just don't use it, it's in my drawer collecting dust).
I see that I can backup apps with Titanium.
But - once I will flash, these backups will all be wiped, will they not?

Why not just copy the titanium backup folder to your computer first? Flash your rom then once you get your phone running copy the folder back to your phone. Reinstall titanium backup and restore as needed. Titanium also comes with dropbox built in which can be pretty useful.

Yea I guess you are right....
Just didn't think of it since I thought I am suppose to format the SD card every time I flash. I also didn't know that TB saves its files to the SD card.

Dude what is your problem. Sometimes people don't know as much as you. This is why they come here and ask questions. They don't need to be ridiculed for not knowing how to do something. I wouldn't ridicule you for losing for instance some chess games against me. I would instead assume you haven't spent thousands of hours studying it and be fine with that instead of throwing it in your face. You have a problem. I've been coming to these forums for maybe 2 weeks and I've seen some negative or condescending thing from you over and over. Read the rules and adhere to them or kindly leave. That is all.

Firstly, Your Rude, Secondly you don't have a clue because you are completely wrong and clearly cannot read.
The OP had clearly stated he did not have an SD Card (but COULD), so if you did a full backup to internal memory (because of no SD Card).
Then yes, if you flash (as most require format/wipe, cache, and dalvik) you would also wipe your backup. Those with devices with no SD Card support should take care to copy the backup files manually to another device for later use.
I was searching for the question of "How to use Titanium Backup before flashing to a new ROM?"
However my question remains unanswered...
I have a custom ROM already installed, with all my apps and configuration etc, I want to try a new ROM to test something, then revert back to the ROM I am using now,
Does Titanium Backup create a restore point image, that I can restore later, and as such carry on using my device where I had it at the point of backup?
If not an image, then is the functionality I am looking for available?

I don't believe titanium offers the feature you are looking for. It does have a feature that creates a flashable zip to to flash all your apps backcto the phone...however this feature has never worked for me lol. I always have to restore my apps the old fashioned way with the batch options restore. Like you,I did not have a SD card when I first flashed my phone. To get around this issue I created a backup with cwm and moved it to my PC for safe keeping. DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID and transfer the backup to PC via USB cable....if you do this the md5 sum will become corrupt. I don't know why but nandroids are sensitive in the way they handled/moved across platforms. Download the free app from the market called Airdroid. It connects your phone to your PC through a wireless LAN connection. It takes a little longer to transfer the boot image since its a large file but its MUCH safer. When you do transfer the nandroid to your PC its very important to not change ANYTHING in the file, especially the name. Change nothing! Otherwise you will mess up the md5. If you do get aa corrupt md5 like I did there is a tutorial on this site somewhere that walks you through the process of fixing it but it was a pain in the a** so use airdroid lol. Hope this helped.
Ps- having a SD card makes like much easier in the world of flashing/android Modding. Even a small one is worth it. Best of luck

Thanks for this Pain-N-Panic, I am not sure, but it maybe something to do with transferring in binary / ASCII modes, similar to an issue you come across with FTP, so it is very plausible as an issue but someone with more knowledge of this would need to comment.
My solution which should help, is to go into Terminal Emulator, and use tar to create an archive.
Example...
type 'pwd' (for present working directory), it should be root by default '/'
in my case, i have /sdcard/ as a symlink to /storage/primary/legacy/
so then type 'cd' (for change directory) to the location of your sd card storage.
then typing 'tar -cvf file.tar ./folder/' c for create, v for verbose, f for file, then the file to create, and the folder.
Search for use of tar online, if you require more information.
Code:
cd /sdcard/
tar -cvf TitaniumBackup.tar /sdcard/TitaniumBackup/
You can then transfer your TitaniumBackup.tar with all file ownership, permissions and even file / folder timestamps are stored, for restoring the folder later.

[Q] What would happen if i deleted all the folders on my sd card

then factory reset my phone? i think i have alot of unnecessary folders on my sd card and i dont know which ones are important and which arent so i just want to delete everything and start over can i do that? I ow all my info will be gone. Can i do that? onces i factory reset my phone will it automatically recreate the important folders?

Hi,
You can surely copy everything to your PC.
Then you can format the card, and Android will put back the folders and files it needs.
At least then, you can save some of the stuff you want.

Hi,
Formatting will also fix any errors you might have on your card.

I just got hit with the TWRP can wipe your SD card bug

I decided to install Clean Rom 4.0 Dev edition so I did a quick tibu, then booted into twrp and made a nandroid of my current setup
I then went to install DE clearing caches and /data
I went to install the rom and it wasn't there
the only thing on my SD card was my backup and it was corrupted.
I plugged my phone in and mounted the sd card and my computer said it was unreadable so I had to format it
I love starting over

I had cwm originally and randomly lost files off my sd card or were corrupted after mounting as usb so switched to twrp and have had the same problems with losing random files and corruption of files. So I don't think it's specific to the recovery its something else that's causing it. Wish I new what it was because it's quite annoying. I've resorted to only transfering files via dropbox or lan with es file explorer but it's definitely a pain when transferring a Rom.

QFT. while I've never had to pull a backup from the cloud I'm glad to have it as an option more than ever seeing as I no longer have an ext SD.
I also started syncing my photos to dropbox every day or so i can't lose those either.

I have it set up as well luckily that's one set files that I have never lost. It's weird there's no rhyme or reason to what gets wiped I've lost pictures data apps that I had saved copies of on my card data from apps. I just don't get it. I wonder if it's actually the internal sd card that's wonky or some way the usb is being handled when mounting.

Well I don't have to pull it from the cloud since it syncs to my desktop automatically but man it saves you from having to remember to do it.

I've wondered the same thing... It might not be recovery related since it happens with both.

That's odd, because I just flashed TWRP 2.1.7 yesterday and I was unable to wipe my SD card. I had to boot into the system and 'Delete Phone Storage' through the settings menu. Nothing would happen when I would try to wipe through TWRP.

Go to cnet.com and download Recuva. Then do a deep scan and it will recover the stuff you lost... worked for me

I had the same problems with my internal storage on HTC Touch Diamond. I lost a lot of files with that phone. With the HTC One X I have only lost a few Pictures that got corrupted, I think it all has to do with continuous flashing ROMs

Ahh, I hate this bug!! I've lost several things and have had tons of pics become corrupted.

I just lost a few photo's today. First time I've encountered this bug. Guess its time to get dropbox and have it sync my photo's and tibu stuff.

I'm pretty damn paranoid, so I've started doing an SD Card dump right before flashing a ROM using ADB.
$ adb pull /sdcard/
Probably overkill, since I have almost everything important backed up somewhere, but I'd rather take the extra thirty minutes and make sure I don't lose anything permanently.

Only thing I was out was time. I back up my photos to drop box and Google plus.

Is there a way to backup a whole folder with the dropbox phone app? Like... For instance I'd like to upload the entire TWRP folder. I couldn't find a way easily.

I just drag them from my phone to my dropbox folder on the computer and it syncs
the downer is there's no way to move a whole folder from dropbox to the phone, from the phone

Recover files from a brick

I did proper backups, but they were saved to the internal storage. Not a good idea. I'm exchanging my TF700 this weekend and would like to simply run the recovery and restore one of those backups. Possible?
Also lost a sensitive document in that brick...any chance of getting it out or deleting it before Asus gets to it?

From your other thread I gathered you cannot access either the recovery or fastboot -- you couldn't even boot at all. In that case you will not be able to save your files or stop them from getting at them. My guess'd be that they reflash or replace parts anyway and not see any files at all... but you won't either, then, and that's a shame.

Lesson learned is keep backups and sensitive documents in the removable storage.

Internal memory full on S3

Hello, I know this question has been asked before but it has been for other phone models and some years ago so the advice given may no longer be the best. Pretty much I have flashed many roms in the past, but I always erase the downloads when I am going to no longer use it. My vzw s3 has 12.05GB of total space available. I have only 1.3GB left to use. I don't know what is causing the space to be used up because my apps only take up 1.2gb, pics 1.2gb, downloads only 1gm and the rest only takes up about another 2 gigs. I only have one backup as well. So I should have atleast 4-5 GB of space free. Is there anyway I can just wipe all the files that are taking up space? Or any suggestions? I don't mind wiping everything off my phone as long as it doesn't ruin my root and brick my phone. Thanks in advanced

Since you don't mind wiping everything format /sdcard in recovery. Just make sure to have a rom on the external sdcard if you plan on just starting everything over.

It deletes everything from /sdcard which is your internal storage. I'm unsure if it wipes the rom as I never use it so I suggest you put one on the external sdcard just in case. You could even pull your external sdcard format sdcard and boot up. If it removes the rom, pop the external sdcard back on and flash that.

Hey so it worked just great. The ROM is untouched although I did an external backup. I got all my 11gb back. The only thing I wasn't expecting was my pictures being deleted. I thought those would be saved

Glad you got the storage space back. Not fun hearing about the photos being gone but formatting /sdcard wipes everything on internal (without discrimination) like I posted.

Pictures won't be in that backup. But you should be using Google's backup options to prevent this sort of thing. Google will backup ask your photos, videos, contacts, apps, etc if you let it. Also set your camera app to save to external sd.
I have the same issue as you with regards to space, I wonder if there's a space sniffer type app for phones that will show you where all your space is being eaten up.

If you've switched between 4.1.2 and 4.2+ ROMs you may have caused some accidental shuffling in how /sdcard is organized.
In Android 4.2 they changed the internal structure to where /sdcard data is actually located. If you use a file browser you may have noticed a mysterious folder at /sdcard/0 which is where 4.2+ stores everything.
It's important to know this so that /sdcard data can be moved back and forth depending on the Android version of the ROM you're using.

I would use es file explorer. It is awesome for browsing the folders on your phone as well as moving files to and from your internal storage. I also always use my external SD for pictures, music and videos I always go into es file explorer before I wipe internal storage to make sure I won't lose something important. Or you can use Google to back up. Google plus will backup photos as well as Drive. Although I've found the auto backup on Google plus to be easier and more convenient.
