In watching netflix and listening to sample mp3s, I'm only getting sound out of the right side speaker. Anyone else have this issue?

I think we all have that problem.
(there is only speakers on the the right to side.)
Don't worry, the hardware is like that! That being said, I was impressed by the sound quality of this small speaker, but the same on the left side would have be nice...

Yeah, I discovered later as I was looking for the speakers that there is only the one grill. I have to say that is probably the most disappointing feature of this tablet. However, It's not THAT big a deal that I'll return it, but I think it will be a must for the next one. I know I've seen a lot of people state that it's a ridiculous setup, and to some extent I agree. It really does make things difficult when watching something with Netflix when the volume level of the show is lower than most (such as Star Trek Voyager, which I'm currently watching)

This is my first tablet so I have no idea how the TF speakers compare but I would consider them as adequate no more. The sound is great using headphones etc but I was wondering if there might be an app to boost the sound quality in general use without using phones/buds? Thanks for any help
You can fiddle around with this app to change a few settings and maybe make it sound better suited for your ears: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.smartandroidapps.equalizer

I am in the same boat except I listen through a bluetooth speaker. I would love to just be able to take the tablet on the porch with me and not have to grab another speaker. Unfortunately I can't hear the built in speaker that well over my kids screaming outside.
To further the question is there anyone out there that maybe has really good and loud speakers. Just want to make sure we did not get faulty units. I have not experienced any of the other issues with "bleeding, creaking, etc.." but I guess I could have faulty speakers. Thanks for your help...

Excellent, many thanks! Using that app seems to have boosted things by a decent amount

This is what I use with my Nook Color (which also does not boast the best internal speaker): Altec Lansing iM-237 Orbit Ultraportable Speaker for MP3 Players. It is loud enough for large patio and pool area and lasts seemingly forever on 3 AA batteries.
I ordered mine from Best Buy and it arrived yesterday. What I seem to have is a speaker imbalance...my right speaker sounds louder than the left.
Also, I have a very minor light bleed at the bottom of the display and if I hold it too tight or press down on it I hear minor creaks as well. Should I return it??
My right speaker seems to be louder as well, its listed in the "things that need to be fixed" thread. I also had the full memory problem and had to reset it back to factory. Today when i woke it up to play music I had no sound whatsoever!!! I powered it down then back up and it seemed to fix it.
I was also wondering if I should just return it and wait a month for new stock or hold on to it and hope they fix it in firmware upgrades. I really like the tablet but now am having second thoughts. I have 7 more days to decide...
Question as above. I just got a Slider and really like it, however t was to replace my touchpad whose speakers are fantastic. The Slider has two speaker grilles but it sounds like only the right side is working. I thought the innards were the same as the Tranformer (2 speakers?) however the Asus website says "High Quality speaker". What is right and is there anyway to improve sound?
Any opinon on whether great functionality etc is worth keeping over good speaker sound is welcome.
Thanks very much
Can someone explain why was problem add stereo speakers.Sound quality of one speaker is good, but I find quite annoying have sound just from one side...

I suspect its because of the dock.
The two stereo speakers on the iconia a510 for example fire downward from the bottom edge of the tablet. If Asus put them there, they would be blocked when the tablet is in the dock.
Putting them on the front or sides would seem an option, but wasn't there some sort of patent infringement lawsuit against Samsung for stealing the iPads design, and wasn't speaker placement part of that. Asus may be afraid of using front or side positioning for fear of some sort of patent infringement.
So I guess the single speaker is a trade-off for the dock. Incidently, I have an iconia a510 as well and the speakers are very good. Loud enough to actually hear a movie, and there is some actual stereo separation to the sound.
Of course, I can't put my iconia into a keyboard dock, so you have to take the good with the bad i guess.
Here's a suggestion for Asus for the TF Infinity or its successor : Put a couple of good stereo speakers into dock itself ! At least then you would have the option of using them when watching a movie. Motorola actually offered a multimedia dock for the XOOM which had its own, powered built in speaker. A multimedia dock for the TF tablets would be great, not everyone wants a keyboard all the time.
The single speaker and placement is horrendous. Probably a cost saving measure. I like the placement they are using on the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1

The Transformer Pad 300 HAS stereo speakers, but they are beside each other! Just like in the prime.. Anyway, the speakers are GREAT! They are really loud, have really good bass (for a tab), and I think it's the 2nd best! Behind Iconia Tab A510.
I don't mind the speaker(-s) either.
I use a leather case that can let the pad stand up. The design is such that the sound is reflected by the back pane of the case. And quite frankly that "boosts" the speakersound.
When I want a big sound, I simply connect it to my 40inch Samsung TV that redirects the sound to my reciever. Not a bad way of watching a movie
Then again, expecting a tablet (or even a laptop) to have great audio, that's a bit silly isn't it?
And stereo sound? When speakers are placed that close together? Come on! Use a headphone instead.
If overall loudness is a problem, try using the Loudness boost option in Dice Player.
Helps a lot with the Asus speakers, can hear movie dialog a lot better with it on.
YES----TF300 and TF 201 have stereo speakers, but on the same spot... Sound is good anyway..
I looked into external speakers like the "Music Bullet" or a pair of "Volcano Mini Speakers", but they just seemed too unwieldy to lug around. The only plus was they run off USB/rechargeable Batteries. I just go with earbuds.
Sound is good enough for me for such mobile device but if want listening a music I use Bluetooth receiver connected to my AV receiver .not that bad and no cable

Yea. There are definitely two. Ive had previous TF300's apart.
I think that the sound is good,it is lound...but sometimes I just don't like when the sound is coming just from one side when I play games or watch some videos...

So I went to see The Offspring live tonight and attempted to record some of the parts of the show. The video is fine, no issues there, but the audio, holy crap does it suck. The bass overwhelms the mic and I cant hear anything but the pounding of the bass. Ill have a video up soon to show you guys what I mean.
In the meantime has someone experienced issues when recording a live show? And being pissed that the audio is so terrible? The iPhone 4S had no issues recording live shows. Everything was great. Maybe some tweaks or something I could install to fix the issue?
At the time of the show I was running Synergy Mod r72.
Edit: And here is the video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7jap9R4Tao
Also youtubes upload process reduced the video quality massive amounts. But the original file is still 1080p.
If you're okay with audio only, Tape Machine is the best app on the market. I have the paid version and use it frequently. Robust options and high quality audio. Recorded the Thrice farewell concert at Marquee Theater and it sounds great.

I would like to know the same as well. I went to the Uproar Festival on Saturday and the video recorded amazing but I too have the issue of all you can hear is the distored bass.

We also have two mics.. one at the top of the phone and one at the bottom.
Is there a way to edit the audio in a computer program to make it more tolerable?

That's not a bass issue, it's a volume issue, it is simply too loud for the microphone.
Try another app as the sensitivity settings can be changed by software.

The diaphragm of the mic can only handle so many dbspl before it produces maximum voltage and you clip. I would bet the mic is not made to handle the 120 dbspl or so the concert is at. Apple, in their infinite wisdom, probably made it to handle such a case... I think it's patent #80085

I too, as I'm sure a lot of people, have noticed audio recording quality issues at concerts. It could be one of the many things that everyone has said here, but whatever the issue is, I really want to try and find a solution or workaround or something.
I did some research and saw so many different reasons for why it could be happening, but I'm not sure anyone really knows. Is it just because the fact that I'm 5 inches away from the stage and my mic can't handle the volume? Is it ICS specific as I've heard some people say? (but I see OP is using CM10, so that's JB not ICS unless he switched to JB after recording the video.) I don't know, but I wish I did!
I was considering one of the external microphone rigs that i've seen people make for the Galaxy Nexus and other phones... or even just a separate audio recorder to use for sound while video taping, and then sync them together in post production.
I am going to link to a video I took from I show I went to over the weekend just to show you my similar clipping experience, mainly only from the bass. Once it's on YouTube I'll post it.

This is the issue, I feel.
At a loud concert, I can put my hand over the mic and the distortion goes down or away, but let the full loudness of that sound hit a small diaphragm and you'll lose resolution + it will be overwhelmed rather quickly, I feel.
Happens with all phones I've tried and even many video cams.

The solution for clipping audio is called Voodoo Sound by Supercurio in the kernel but unfortunately us version of S3 doesn't have Wolfson dac so I think we are screwed. I've loved this future on my Fascinate with custom kernels.

That is not what I wanted to hear... ugh. There has to be some sort of solution. Maybe I'll try putting my fingers over the microphones next time I'm at a concert, lol.
Doesn't the video recording usually use the second mic for noise cancelling, or is that only for calls? That can REALLY f*** up music.
Also, I just thought it would be really cool if a video app could use the second mic in addition to the first in order to record stereo audio.
I'm trying to find if there is a way to decrease the microphone sensitivity, since Voodoo Sound is not compatible with US variants of the S3 due to lack of Wolfson DAC. Some people suggested using the headphones that came with the phone to record sound during video since the microphone on the headphones may be better. I also heard that putting your fingers over the microphone helps, but I'd have to try and see.
Here is a video I took recently at a show I went to over the weekend. I was literally inches away so I know that doesn't help my case. Skip to 1:10 to get to the louder portion.
Covering the microphone
I can tell you that covering the bottom microphone isn't sufficient to record loud events (but it helps). I didn't know there was a top microphone at the time. I might have an opportunity to try that this weekend.
haha the Stone Pony. My ex always used to get me to go there, only to find it full of 40ish year old women trying desperately to pretend they're still in their 20s. I prefer Porta, much more attractive girls and they serve pizza!
Hi everyone,
I have the RT, absolutly love it. BUT, the speakes are too quiet. I travel for busines, so having seporate speakers don't work all the time. Headphones work great when I am on te train, but in hotel rooms watching a movie or listening to music when I am working just doesn't cut it. External speakers are too big to pack, (I am a one samll bag packer!) Plus, I just don't want to spend money on external speakers as I don't have much of that green stuff!
Besides the techincal route of making the voluming higher, what have you guys done to fix this issue? Is there something small and cheap that you can buy? I don't know.

Most hotel rooms are quiet enough that I've found the Surface was easily loud enough for me (and I travel a good bit for work). With that said, if I'm watching a movie on it, I'm sitting or lying close enough that earbuds (or headphones, but they're bigger to pack) are easily usable.
While I agree that the volume limit is low, the situations you describe are actually not at all where I have a problem with it. The biggest problem I have is trying to use it in a noisy environment where I need to be able to hear other people (so, no earbuds); the click feedback from the Touch Cover get lost in the noise.
Bluetooth headsets would work fine, I guess; Surface RT supports it.

You must stay at nice hotels then! I can't afford those. lol Heck, I can't hear the darn thing in my apartment! I can't hear it at all with the windows open, and I can just barely hear it when I am cooking and the thing is three feet away from my head. Even closing the windows its still heard to hear the thing.
Headphones when I am laying down in bed? No, ears hurt. How about when I am watching a movie with the girlfreind? Two sets of earphones? Maybe your enviroment is nicer than mine, China.
Maybe there is no options out there... Just looking to see what others have done...

You try step 14 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1970464 :
14. Boost Speaker Volume
Surface's volume is quite low. Go to Control Panel, then Sound, then click on Speakers, then Properties, then Enhancements and check Loudness Equalisation and Virtual Surround too if you wish. Apply changes.
These tips definitely help, but at the end of the day, speaker placement is probably the bigger issue. Thats why a Nexus 10, with the speakers facing you sounds so much better than my surface pro or my sisters ipad when watching movies.
Cupping my hands behind the speakers makes them a little louder in front (at the cost of some audio quality). I wonder if there's a market for a third-party "audio guide" that's just a piece of shaped plastic which directs the sound from the Surface speakers forward...

This is 1 of the main reasons I didn't get a surface. I played with 1 in the store & the sound fires away from you. I settled on a Samsung galaxy note 10.1. I can't believe how this is overlooked by tablet makers lol.

I have one of those rock-it "turn any surface into a speaker" things and it works surprisingly well, but you have to have the right kind of surface to mount it to. Applying it to the kickstand on the Surface while open produces nice loud sound, but it is a bit metallic. Putting it on a cardboard box works very well with a nice warm sound, if you happen to have one around when you want to watch a movie. I have stuck it to a hardback book cover and dvd case with pretty decent effect as well.
