Google maps using ~33% battery all the time - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hey guys,
I've been using my AT&T One X for about 3 weeks now, and the battery life is pretty bad, I'd say around 12 hours tops, not what I would expect from a phone that topped battery life charts in the reviews. I have noticed that Google Maps takes up 33% of my battery life when I don't use it, and even more when I do. Has anyone else noticed this? Shouldn't it be close to 0 when I don't use it? Its as if it stays fully opened constantly in the background.

Do you use the location services? That may be what is eating your battery if you do. You could try to uninstall it, reboot, then reinstall from the market and see if that helps any.

12 hours is pretty standard for a good smartphone
But yes turn off location services or force close Google maps, it should help

6.7.0 version of maps does not have the battery drain issue. The latest version of maps on the market has serious battery usage issues!
Sent from my htc_evita using xda premium

I have to force close maps often. Something turns it on randomly and I can't figure out what it is. It's not the gps because I've tested it after force closing it and it didn't turn maps back on. If I don't force close it after a reboot it will use up a lot of battery.

in Location > Location & Google search - Turn this off or don't select this, hope this will help. (apps will ask for permission if gps is needed)
this helped a bit for me.,

Make sure Google Latitude isn't running. That can be a big battery killer.

Ya, I noticed Google Maps keeps opening up in the background ALL THE TIME. I will force kill it, refresh running tasks, and it's there again. Chews up about 24MB. Thanks for the tip about location services, I'll try turning that off and see what happens.

It seems to be primarly when it has updates. If you install the updates the battery drain will go away.

Pretty sure this isn't true. I had good problem without any pending updates.
I installed the autostarts app ($1.50) and disabled Google Maps from auto starting, that seemed to help a lot.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app

I get quite mixed performance - sometimes I get the maps app taking a lot of battery, sometimes not. See battery life images from my One X below, taken 10 days apart. On one I got 2 1/3 days life without maps running; on the other I got 12 hours with maps taking 38%. I haven't installed any new apps in that time, although I have applied market updates.
I've been trying to track this down using Carat and BetterBatteryStats, but no luck yet. @benraf, if you figure this out, please let us know.
Cheers.

Use rom toolbox to freeze it till you can figure it out.

Google maps is like a virus! That's why I always use mapquest.
On a more serious note, I wouldnt mind figuring this out.

Do you have GPS turned on? When I went to Orlando, I had GPS on and Maps navigating for about 4-5 hours, and the most it used was 8% of my total battery. The screen should always be the biggest consumer of battery.

How long of a life do you get?

Thanks for all the feedback sarcasim and all. I've never had a battery issue before I installed the recent apk of the new android market. That is my only guess.
Is there a way to revert back and wait for the official update from the market? (I'm still new to android so I'm feeling my way around)

I pulled the SIM outta my G2x last week after my N1 came back from the dead.
With the G2x just sitting there without a SIM, being used occasionally for Riptide or Pinball HD and some web browsing/email while watching the tube I get a solid 3 days of battery life. I forget the stupid thing is even on until the alarm goes off every morning at 6:45.
Just don't use the phone part of your $500 phone and it will work great!
solution
it was the downloaded apk for the market. i did a complete reset so this should fix my issue.

I use it regularly since the start, I have no noticeable battery drain.
I use it and don't mind it, I get around 2 days of battery with moderate use and some calls. Wi-fi is always on, localization services are always on, mobile data (3G) is always off. It lasts me more than one day even if I keep using the phone so I'm fine with it.
I would say it 'eats' 10 to 50% more battery per charge depending on usage. If you have it mostly in standby you are more likely to notice the battery hit. If you keep using the phone for one thing or another, it won't make much difference.
With 4.2.1 it seems to hold pretty well while being very snappy. The official 4.1.2 follows the same trend (lasting around 2 days with the same use), but I really liked how fast it got with Air Kernel. I usually have around 200 MB free.
I'm currently using Rasbeanjelly (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2028718) with Air Kernel #270 (CM,Voodoo Colors http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1469842) and noop+SmartAssV2 setup. So far battery seems to hold up fine through the day. The only real downside I got from this was the occasional sleep of death (while using the phone, very weird, I would report it to the maintainer but I can't as I'm new around here), a FC when accessing Chrome settings (seems to be related with google sync feature) and the less stellar performance when changing orientation (same kernel and official 4.1.2 ROM doesn't have the issue).
Although it is handy sometimes, I think the worst aspect is the 'nagging' that Google Now has. Last time I got a "WTF" expression was with it saying that I walked 40Km that month more 20 than the last month, a nice feature, but completely unexpected, I would like to have a proper access to that kind of cards and the information that they provide... If you search weather it won't give you the same weather card shown automatically by it (at least for me).... one of these says it will be ready to take over the world...
G next should do you pretty well

I find it useless. I have my weather app, and I have my lottery app. Hockey has been cancelled, so I have no scores to keep checking. What would I use it for? Random google search? Meh.

I use Google Now because I'm fascinated by the creepiness of it. I like that when I'm at work, it tells me how long it will take me to get home if I leave now. I was confused when one Saturday at 11:45 am it was giving me the locations of nearby restaurants, then my wife said it's probably because it's almost lunch time. Google Now knows what I want before I do!
I haven't tried turning it off to save battery life yet, but I unplug from the charger at 6:30 am and plug in at midnight no problem.

Ok. So I had previously disabled Google Now because it drained so much battery. But I was wanting to use it since the updates keep getting better so here's what I did to where it isn't destroying battery anymore.
I have Latitude and location updating turned off in Maps, but found out enabling Google Now turned location updating back on. So once you have Now enabled, go into Maps and uncheck where it says "Update my location from this device". It still works fine because I have location reporting (or something like that) turned on in Google sync in Settings. It still uses wifi and/or the towers to update your cards, but Maps isn't taking chunks out of the battery anymore.

Google services uses a lot of battery

Hello
I've been having thoughts about my battery stats on my i9505. I can pretty much go through the day but sometimes a full charge is just not enough. I usually get 1:30 to 2 hours of screen time, and have about 20-30% battery left.
Here's what I'm wondering: why does google services use this much battery?
I'm running stock rom with Chainfire's cf auto root.
Here's some statistics.

I had the same problem with GE ROM, and after I put Location Services Off and then On again, the problem went away. I have Google now active.
Location service is the culprit. I had same issue on my S4. But I turned it off permanently and now I have nice battery life.
You can keep GPS on but turn off "Use wireless networks" option. Also make sure you have latest Play Store and Google Play Services installed on your phone.
try disabling the samsung push notification thingy... i suddenly started getting horrible battery life, and disabled this little guy yesterday... After 10 hrs of normal usage so far today, i still have 75% juice left

You have google now on and google services doesn't drain most of your battery? That's odd because i disabled and re enabled google now(and location services with it) some times and same battery drain every time ... did you have data and sync constantly on?

So you either using the phone extensively through the day which results to other things using up more battery ... or am i having a problematic phone? Or there is a magic setting that has to be made?
My average screen time is about 2-2,5 hours and that gets me easily 2-2 and half days of battery ... with same usage and google now on that's halved ... i m getting literally half the battery life with google now doing its thing ... without altering anything else on the phone ... just on and off google now ... which i ve been testing for a couple days ...
Yeah I don't see a daily benefit in phone knowing network location until I want a certain app to access my location. Try greenifying Network Location and any other wake lock apps that are NOT widgets or apps that u require notifications from (I greenified Google maps, play store and Google services). You will need greenify donate though (well worth it).
I got my standby battery almost flat instead of steady decline and can get an extra 10-20 hours of standby time.

Sorta, in a nutshell. I do believe it's a bad installation of the ROM that's causing the issue. If you're on a custom ROM that requires a gapps package the I would think reflashing the gapps package would do the trick to fix it but I can't promise that.
Don't have 10 posts, but I uploaded a screenshot to imgur, just add /GW1UrDo.
Obviously the issue is google services. What's strange is that it doesn't do this all the time, just once every few weeks...

it's been reported in the google product forums. Some are reporting battery drain, some having problems connecting to their exchange servers( authentication fails). Other (me included on this) Exchange connects, but push mail is erratic. Also, items read on the phone do not get marked read on the server.
In the mean time, I am using touchdown from the play store (30 day trial) hoping that google will get it sorted. Using touchdown, the battery drain is gone, and push mail works flawlessly...

Actually, I switched to Touchdown on my Nexus 4 running Jelly Bean 4.3 because Exchange Services absolutely killed my battery. Tried everything I could find to fix it, and never could. And from the searches I did at the time I wasn't alone.
So far, Exchange Services is behaving on my Nexus 5, but I'm concerned to see that the problem could come back.
Funny i disabled the contacts portion of the exchange sync on 3 of my 4 exchange accounts and i DO NOT see this big battery hit anymore. must have been a glitch, i will be watching it closely now..

Your exchange account is set to push, right?
Go to settings > corporate
Its flicking between syncing and last updated, right? I think its syncing every other second, which is whats draining the battery. I just turned off the sync for that until they release a fix
Ditto for battery drain issues. I hadn't noticed it as much until today where after 3 hours my battery had dropped 40% and I wasn't even using it. Checked and it was due to exchange services.
I wont go with a third party solution so hopefully this gets fixed soon.
I haven't had any issues with enhanced email either

Everytime your phone gets hot ( and it's the same for all brands) you should turn off your phone and then back on. An app is keeping your processor at 100%. Two days ago I had the same problem with facebook and messenger.
The camera it's on top of all available phones. I have the latest firmware available and it's capable of very very good results, even better then S7/edge.
All the android phones, at first use are scanning all the files. It's ususal that first charge or two to last less.
Huawei has this prompt for apps runnng in backgroud. It's annoying but at least we know witch apps are more power hungry.
