What more does one have to do to fix wifi? - HTC Sensation

Here's my "little" story on how I ended up on xda forums asking for help on wifi. TL;DR is at the bottom.
I've owned the sensation for about a year now, or so it seems. Always remained stock everything. Loved it because it felt so smooth, faster than any other phone i have owned previously with Tmo. Updated every OTA update they threw at me, had no plans to root, flash roms of the sort.
UNTIL the latest ICS update, i was a little late on receiving it. I'd say its been about a few weeks since i got ICS OTA on my STOCK sensation. Downloaded it and thought WOW awesome, didn't even expect this. Everything was good until i noticed my wifi wasn't working. This really dampened my spirits as i am a HEAVY user of wifi, weather i'm at work or at home.
I then did my research and found out i wasn't the only one with this wifi problem. Of course Tmo forums had troubleshooting tips for the blind, deaf ,and armless.
"have you tried turning it off?"
"resetting it?"
Tips that you know aren't going to help. Anyways i resorted to checking out this flashing, rom, rooting, s-offing business. Got to say i spent a whole day just going from thread to thread just to be able to grasp the idea of what i was getting myself into. After countless boxes of cheez-its and hours spent on reading up on this, i conjured up enough courage to believe i was ready.
From what i read since i had updated to ics i was not able to "s-off" using the revolutionary website because i was hboot 1.27.... yada yada
so i used i believe it was called "asskickers guide for flashing roms with s-on, 1.27 hboot.
To make this long story shorter, i followed his guide to the T.
And that abled me to have root, and flashed my first rom while S-on using smartflash with 4EXT.
I even used the rom he suggested in the guide, revolutionary HD 6.7.0 4G-XE
Everything went smooth, and the rom booted up and everything.
To my discovery my wifi still wasn't working. This really had me bouncing off the wall.
Luckily in the guide it explained that wifi would be an issue, and had a small guide on how to fix it. Flashing boot.img with the matching kernal you selected in the rom. GREAT i thought. but still, that didn't work.
I don't know if i did it wrong, i really don't think i did because i follow instuctions to the T. Or so i think.
Anyways.
Did more research and found out that most S-On users had the wifi problem beacuse of the Dev unlock only unlocking certain. Sorry for my bad wording, lets not forget I'm a first timer.
Anyways after reading about that i assumed i had to go S-off now. SO i used Juopunutbear S-OFF (HBOOT 1.27.0000 with 3.32 ICS Firmware) method.
I used this method and how challenging it was with that paper clip wire trick it was to get it. I swear it took me at least 20 tries, but finally got it and succesfully got S-off to show on the white screen, bootloader i believe its called.
So after i got s-off i reinstalled the rom, whiped everything and re-flashed it.
Still no luck on wifi. So now this has me crawling at my knees begging what more could i do to fix this wifi nightmare of mine. PLEASE if anyone could help, i'd be forever thankful.
AS of right now i am...
Unlocked Dev
S-off
Hboot - 1.27.0000
Android version - 4.0.3
Htc sense - 3.6
ROM - Android Revolution HD 6.7.0 4G-XE
Kernel - 3.0.16-v1.30.2 Sebastion FM#1
Baseband version - 11.69A.3504.00P_11.23.3504.07_M2
Build number - 3.32.531.14 CL356011
TL;DR My wifi is still not working after I feel that i've done all that i can. ANY suggestions would help. Please and thanks you.
Thanks to anyone that actually reads all of this sort of rant of mine.

Question: what do you mean wifi is broken? Do you mean it doesn't turn on or it doesn't find any networks or what?

Hmm simple.. Solution is there.. Let's see
You have unlocked the bootloader after soff.. You should not do that.. After soff you can flash engineering hboot.. Which comes with soff method.. (juopunutbear/revolutionary) which are much much better than the unlocked hboot
Ok
Now to the point
Try the tmous ruu..
Ruu = rom update utility.. The official one of HTC
Search for pyramid shipped rom collections.. Thread in sensation development section.. And get the pyramid ics.. Ruu of tmobile
And run it...
It's an exe file so.. Just double click on it
But remember.. As you have done unlock of bootloader.. You need to re lock it first (fastboot oem lock)
Also you need to connect the phone to pc... From bootloader/fastboot ( phone reads fastboot usb after this)
Then run the ruu.. It should solve your wifi issue

@sy22
it does that whole "turning on wifi..." then it goes to error after a while.
@ganeshp
Thanks thanks thanks a bunch, i'll be doing this today and see if it solves my long and twisted journey. :fingers-crossed:

If that doesnt work then it could be a hardware fault. I used to have wifi issues and after flashing a whole bunch of roms and seeing it still failing to turn on, I gave up and S-ON'd my sensation and sent in to repairs and have had no problems since

IT could be hardware problems but the thing that gets me is that my wifi has always worked.
Like i said i've owned it for about a year now or so it feels, and i've never had problems with it until that OTA update to ICS.
but if all fails then i'll throw in the towel and undo all this mess and send it in i suppose.

[Q] eng s-off problem.

Hello to every one here in this forum.
I am posting here a topic about a problem I have with my new htc inspire 4G.
I had rooted my phone with success with the ace hack kit and loaded the revolution
HD rom .after one o 2 days II thought I load the radio that was given with this rom
So I went to make the phone eng s-off and I forgot to check the I have s-off.
Now the problem is I cannot get to the boot screen and when I turn on the phone it takes about half an hour to start. After that every thing is ok.trying every thing to get the stock rom back but no success. All the methods I found at this forum will fail. The phone just freezes and I have to take the battery to start it again and wait for half an hour to start.
Any help would be grateful.
Thanks.
Look for Gene Poole's s-on tool. Follow his instructions and return to stock. Then try the hack kit from attn1. You should be set then.

You need to get a proper hboot installed. The newer Inspires have some hardware just enough different that the ENG hboot and/or the older Froyo hboot images will cause just this problem. Since you were able to install this, then you are obviously S-OFF. As such, you can install a new hboot from the booted phone (once it is finally booted) but it is tricky and involves operations that could really screw things up. Your best bet is to jump into the IRC channel and get some real-time help with this:

Hello and thanks for your replys.
I am new to these things and i did manager to root my phone with sucsess and load a new rom. The only problem is with the hboot now. How can i fix it to be ok. If i have fast boot enable the phone starts up in 5 sec. if i do not i have to wait about half an hour to start after that every thin is working ok.
What do i have to do?
Any more help would be gratfull.
And sorry for my bad english.

Have you tried hittng the irc link above that gene poole posted for you??????
I got your 10 char right here
You should read up on this phone in the threads. Its been stated many places that eng s-off messes with the new hboot and you dont even need it to flash a radio. Hboot does this with a pd98img without needing eng s-off. But I hope you go to the link suggested and get it fixed. Stay away from eng s-off.

any ideas about not wanting to load the PD98IMG.ZIP?
eng s-off problem
i finally did manage to to load Gene Poole's s-on tool but still the problem is there and phone is still eng s-off.
Problem fixed
I want to thank you all for all the good things and help you have here.
phone is fixed i took the battery out and after that the phone starts and boots
like new.
thanks again

engineering hboot

ive seen references to an eng hboot for the inspire 4g. im still a lil fuzzy on what DHD stuff can be flashed on the inpire so bear with me
im am radio s-offed and wondering if there is a download for an eng hboot somewhere thats not hidden inside a root tool.
i miss some of my fastboot commands and would like to run an engineering bootloader if one is available that works with all firmwares.
im not normally one to ask for info, but searching the entire inspire section for eng hboot, engnineering hboot, eng bootloader, engineering bootloader and even just plain eng and engineering didnt turn one up.
thanx for any info

It's out there - but jams up booting on Inspire devices shipped with Gingerbread. If that's you - don't even think about it. If your phone was shipped with Froyo, applied and used correctly, it's fine, however unnecessary.
On my Inspire ENG S-OFF has been made correctly with DHD One click ENG S-OFF tool, but I do not remember with what firmware it was on sale.
thanks for the replys. i was able to find hboot-eng.nb0 inside the s-off tool mentioned above.
just curious... whats the difference in shipped with GB vs froyo? i picked this phone up used,so no idea what it shipped with
by jams up,i assume you mean it hangs at the htc screen and wont boot?
I bought my Inspire at the beginning of December, and tried that same tool. Everything worked fine, them I rebooted. It died.I yanked the battery, and no response. 10 minutes later, then phone came on by itself and vibrated for about two minutes while stuck on the boot screen. Then it loaded just fine.
But, it would do the same thing if I ever rebooted.
Thinking I would be slick, I flashed the original stock rom from htc so it would install the original bootloader. Bricked immediately! It would never leave the bootscreen.
So, I returned it to Walmart, and got a new one. So, if you aren't sure about when your phone was shipped out, don't do it. Bad juju.
too late! i was running the 3.12.405.1 wwe rom and flashed the eng hboot. rebooted bootloader, and it was a .85 hboot,so i thot it would be ok,but stuck at htc screen on reboot.
unlike your experience,i flashed the stock att ruu and it was fine. currently reflashing and resetting up 3.12.405.1 rom.
did the tool turn your radio secure flag off and super CID you? maybe its got somethin to do with that? or something with the tool? i had installed it via a PD98IMG file in fastboot
thanks for the warning,if id seen it sooner,i prolly wouldnt have bothered. one thing i did notice was that with the eng hboot i was unable to fastboot oem rebootRUU resulted in a "FAILED!" error

Sooo jealous. I don't really know if the tool ever truly worked because I could never get back into bootloader to check any of it. Now, it isn't so much that I need eng s-off, but that it has issued a challenge by bricking my phone. It's personal.

It's highly doubtful you actually bricked it. I can fix these. But since you no longer have it, we'll never know.

Unable to use firmware 3.24,3.30, 3.32

Hello. I'm trying to run various ICS roms that require firmware 3.24 or more(Android Revolution HD for example and numerous others). For a while I was running Virtuous Inquisition on 3.12 firmware but wanted to try some others out so I downloaded the 3.30 firmware found on the firmware for beginners topic page.
I am using the correct firmware because I know what my CID/MID are:
cid:T-MOB010
mid: PG5810000
However, no matter what ROM i use, I tried VI, Revolution HD, Blitz, on either 3.24 or 3.30 or 3.32, I always get stuck in a bootloop. VI gets stuck on a bootloop on any firmware besides 3.12. What do I need to do to get the higher firmwares to work?
This is what my bootloader screen shows on the top when on firmware 3.12. If you guys need more information just ask and I'll post it when I can.

Hi,
Have you had a look at THIS THREAD ?
Yes I have. Using this thread I found the firmware that is supposed to work with my phone using the CID I found using the information in that thread. However, the firmwares listed for my thread that are 3.24 onward do not work for any of the ROMs I have tried. Only 3.12 and 1.17 work for me. I'm not sure why this is.
I'm quite noob but probably you need to be supercid to flash some roms. You can follow the guide (in development forum 2nd sticky thread). Good luck
Strange you have locked bootloader btw.
Follow guide for superCID to see if that helps?

Well, looks like I have a similar problem...
I'm SuperCID, and till this morning, I was running VI 3.5.1b.
Seeing on the VI thread that the latest firmware could be run with it, I upgraded to 3.32... and since then, I'm stuck in an bootloop.
I tried everything : rolling back to 3.24 and to 3.12 ; changing roms ; wiping everything I could ; but i won't help.
Most of the times, I'm stuck at the HTC Splashscreen ; VI and Tripnice (yeah, even tried that one) go to the boot animation, then reboot. So I'm at a loss here as to what to do to fix it. Any help would be very welcome and appreciated !

Well in such case I would extract the rom.zip from the official RUU (I hope you know how to do) and flash it as PG58IMG. Then start again the whole procedure.
Go to [ROM]Shipped Pyramid ROM Collection thread and dowload the RUU_PYRAMID_ICS_HTC_Europe_3.30.401.1_Radio_11.69.3504.00U_

Yup, still got access to both of them. I resolved my problem by flashing both the firmware and the latest rom from He Who Must No Be Named... For a reason I still don't grasp, it seems that the firmwares I flashed previously didn't downgrade the bootloader, or something like that. Trip's one, however, is a waaaay bigger file and seems to rewrite a huge amount of things.
Don't know yet if I could switch back to VI harmlessly, though...
Sorry- of course you can reach bootloader, you listed it in your OP! Tired...
Something strikes me, you have hboot 1.23, I know this version causes issues with s-on users that have accepted OTA updates.
Have you run s-off via revolutionary in the past? Unlocked via htc.dev (which I think gives hboot 1.23)?
Does recovery work?

After reading more around the forums I'm pretty sure I need a custom firmware. One with the HBOOT of 3.12 but the rest of the files of a 3.32 firmware. How would I go about doing this?
I wouldn't mess things more than this.
I would go back to GB first.
Download the appropriate official RUU for your device and run it on the pc until appears the picture of a phone and "show readme file). Leave this window open.
then go to "My computer"-disk C (or wathever)- Documents and settings-name of computer (or your name)- local settings - Temp.
There you will find a folder or more folders with a weird name ie: {040EEDE2-371A-4BF6-8D25-1B12121F8D9E}.
Inside one of this folder you will find a file "rom.zip". do not extract, just drag and drop somehere in your pc.
Now close the RUU windows by clicking cancel.
Now rename "rom.zip" in PG58IMG and put in the root of your SD card.
Reboot your phone by pressing vol down+power.
At this point the file PG58IMG will be detected you will be asked to update. Say yes by pressing volume up.
Be patient as it will take a lot of time, don't touch or do anything until it has finished. a lot of files will be flashed and screen may goes black a couple times.
Dont worry and wait until it will say "press power to reboot".
Now you should be back to stock GB and start all procedures to upgrade once more if you like.
Remember then to delete the PG58IMG on the SD card.
When you will set your phone again, remember to untick fastboot for future use.
Hope it helps
PS: Forgot to say that by doing this you will lose root (not S-OFF and superCID) but you can easly re-root your device by following the guides in the forum.
So I managed to flash back to 3.32 and VI 4.0 after 2 days of mercyless bootlopping.
What I did was :
1- superwipe everything, flash latest TripOS rom
2 - reboot to bootloader and flash Trip's latest firmware (this way, I knew I woul have both a matching rom and matching firmware, avoiding incompatibility issue). Trip's firmware rewrites a huge amount of things, and that seems to put an end to what was causing my bootloops.
3 - reboot and let the phone alone for 10 minutes, just to let everything settle right.
4 - reboot to recovery
5 - Superwipe again
6 - flash my rom (in my case, VI 4.0)
7 - power off, and boot to bootloader
8 - flash 3.32 firmware
9 - reboot and let the phone still for 10 minutes
So far everything runs perfectly (I just have a splash screen saying "Trip'n Nice" on it) and it saved me from going into the process of flashing a RUU, rooting the RUU, installing recovery and so on. Give it a try, it might work for you to.
Looks like He has HBOOT 1.23, so I suspect He's using HTC-Dev method to unlock the boot loader or running FOTA that maybe gives him HBOOT 1.23.
Since Revolutionary could only S-OFF up to HBOOT 1.18, so maybe He just need to wait till Revolutionary support HBOOT 1.23 (the only options, maybe next year )
BTW, what are You doing that causing You to have HBOOT 1.23?
problem is that his bootloader shows ***Locked***.
If you go through htc-dev it would have shown ***Unlocked***.
This is why I would start from the beginning flashing a GB RUU and then start again the upgrade process.
My humble opinion, of course

[Q] How can I S-OFF after using HTCdev unlock because I have HBOOT 1.27.0000

How can I S-OFF after using HTCdev unlock because I have HBOOT 1.27.0000. The reason I want a full s-off is because I'm getting errors with WiFi on most roms and I read that this is caused by HTCdev method keeps kernel and radio blocked.

Thanks for the link
I did hours of searching, but didn't come across that. Must be pretty well hidden for such a useful tutorial.
EDIT: GOT EVERYTHING WORKING, no need to read the rest!
Well the good news is, IT WORKS my phone is now S-OFF.
The BAD NEWS is, my WiFi doesn't work on the stock ROM I have on my phone any more. It did work before I did the S-OFF procedure.
"WiFi-Hotspot" says "Error", and "WiFi" is stuck on "Turning Wi-Fi on...".
I suspect this is because the S-OFF might have changed something that will make the stock rom incompatible (just like LeeDroid Wi-Fi was incompatible with HTCdev S-ON)
So now I'm going to install LeeDroid and hope that my Wi-Fi works.
If it doesn't I hope I didn't short out the WiFi chip somehow with the JUOPUNUTBEAR wire technique (yes I know highly unlikely because the chip isn't anywhere near the points of interest).
EDIT: I've tested it with LEEDROID and WiFi is working
Thanks for all your help guys and girls

[Q] Ask a Stupid (Firmware) Question

Okay....so I need to twiddle around with my trusty old HOX in order to solve the constant rebooting issues. (I also want to jump ship off of the memory-heavy Viper Venom that's on it to just straight CM or something similarly light weight)
To do that I've got to update the firmware.
And to do that... first I have to identify what bloody firmware I have so that I use the correct updating method and don't brick my one and only device.
I'm not a total noob... I've been working on a beginner/moderate level with Android for 3 years now... I can get around ADB (typos not withstanding) reasonably well, push commands, get to hboot, know fastboot and such... but I am just not finding the specific answers I need right this moment to get this work done. So if Someone can point me in the proper direction, I would be muchly appreciative.
Right Now my bootloader screen says the following
Tampered
Unlocked
Evita PVT Ship S-ON RLHboot 1.09.0000
Radio 0.20os.32.09.10_2
OpenDSP-v31.1.0.45.0815
eMMC-boot

So, who can tell me which firmware version contains Hboot1.09? Once I know that, I can start the process of SuperCID and S-OFF to make these updates. Barring that, anyone who can point me to a one-click unlock tool would be great too... the ones I find on the first few pages of the forum all recommend firmware newer than what I know is installed on here according to the above into, and I am leery to use them for risk of bricking my one and only phone.
Your current firmware is actually irrelevant, you need not worry about that at all. All you need to do is get s-off, which should be a sinch. Because you don't have SuperCID (I'm assuming from your last paragraph) you really only have one option, which is the Rumrunner method. It should work with Viper installed, if not it has a good success rate with the Kickdroid ROM.

So I did have SuperCID... a readCID command demonstrated that.
and thanks to your assuaging my fears, timmaaaa, I was able to flash to 2.15 without a problem.
the problem now... is even after pushing TWRP every way I know how, I can't get into recovery, even with fastboot erase cache. ugh I feel like yanking my hair out.
but at least the phone hasn't randomly slowed down or rebooted since flashing the new firmware. (and the pesky double-reboot that made flashing it such a core in the first place is fixed too)
::edit:: gonna spend the next hour redownloading the venom ro so I can push the boot.img file, maybe that will fix things.
Did you check the md5 of the recovery download?

Yes I did. I also tried to install it via a few onboard solutions like goo.im. no go. it says it's been installed, fastboot insists the phone is unlocked and s-off; but it boots to the flash screen, tries to load recovery, fails, and reboots to the rom.
I am going to assume that the unlock is fubar somehow and start from scratch by installing 2.20 and using the HTC unlock, and go from there.
now if only damned downloads didn't take 5 hours on my slow rural connections... thank you isp conglomeracy.
