Firefox mobile OS - Open source like Android - Android General

Kind of old news, but I didn't know about it:
http://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2012/07/02/firefox-mobile-os/
Looks like it will look and function similar to Android:
http://www.techweekeurope.co.uk/news/firefox-os-mozilla-pictures-86274?pid=216
What do you guys think? Now we'll have 2 open source and 2 close sourced mobile OS in the market.

I doubt it'll succeed. It'll be more like Bada os, I mean not popular and not many phones running it.
But having competition is always good for the users. Who knows, I hope it will bring unseen until now features and core changes to mobile OSes. Because Android makes anything better!

Also maybe Nokia would be interested, seems like his only way out of Symbian was Windows Phone OS, also as far as i know they didn't have android phones =P

They had some sort of a flame war with google so they dont wanna use android... if they did then they could regain the leadership in the mobile market.. whatever, i dont think it will succeed too. Boot to gecko again by mozilla was launched long ago, it was even built for the sgs2 i think... but didnt pull much attention...

This is the new name of Boot 2 Gecko, It is also a more refined version, Mozilla is still trying to attract OEM's as Google once did. Yes I am not going to hold my breath however I thought the few glimmers of hope (along with former Nokia employees pursuing Meego) would have been met with more optimism.
But if they get successful, you just know Apple will try to sue them.

FireFox's mobile Os looks much 'inspired' off iOS and Android...

1. Android is an OS, not a device.
2. No it hasn't. Not possible.
1. I know it is an OS and not a device but it has been ported to run on Android devices in this case HTC Magic (Or atleast recreated)
2.Nothing is impossible, Yes they have a locked source but people created it people can recreate it

Then you probably should have said ported to the HTC Magic. Otherwise it just sounded silly. Just saying.
I personally do not think that is iOS, but a knock-off of the GUI running on top of probably some Linux variant or Android. I have personally seen some in China, and the GUI seems like a pretty good reproduction of the original. But is was nothing more than a reproduction of what iOS looks like.

That's great
- The background in the task pane doesn't seem quite right.
- That's running awfully snappy for a HTC Magic, especially since iOS doesn't have Qualcomm drivers (and closed-source, etc.)
- iOS won't let you delete the Phone app.

Don't people rather have fully functional android on the iphone?

When I looked at the news I laughed, because thousands of Shanzhai (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanzhai )phones are out there with pseudo-iOS UI.
Erm...

If Android on iPhone can be done on sure the reverse can be too.
Not sure why you'd want to though cause a new development idea (called monodroid) is being worked on by Novell so apps can run on all smartphones. Or at least be MUCH easier to cross platform. I think they have already made this for the iPhone.

No, Android is open source, iOS obviously is not. Which means that, to port iOS to, let's say the HTC Magic, someone would have to rewrite it all from scratch.

This is NOT iOS.
This is just a skinned Android to look alike iOS.
Read the news completely:
The operating system is perfectly identical to that of Apple, in every detail. The language set should be Chinese and is so well played that seems to be a sort of port. And it’s called Android Frøya iPhone

not really, creating an emulation of an iphone to run iOS is totally possible and more likely to be done then recoding iOS, however, this looks fake, so i do agree that it hasn't been done.
But never underestimate determined developers, if they have been able to run windows 95, and/or ubuntu on android devices, or running Mac OS X on PCs running AMD, emulators to run older Mac OS on pc, emulators to run older games, emulators for private servers for games, I'm completely sure they can figure out how to get iOS running on an android devices without the source code of iOS itself, just give it time.
Ok...........
First of all, MUIU DOES NOT, I repeat DOES NOT work like this. Nobody in their right mind would write all these functions from scratch just so they could pretend its iOS. Why on god's earth would you write a weather app that functions, and looks exactly like Apples? Same goes for calculator and finance.
I honestly have no idea what to think. This has the exact same applications, functions as iOS. But the weird thing is that the wallpaper scrolls with each slide... This definatley is not MUIU, though.
This is way more than just a skinned launcher with a set of apps, but I'm not convinced it's an ACTUAL port of iOS (because that seems insane?).
It seems more fesable to me that this is a port of one of the Chinese clone iOS offerings. There have been a lot of iPhone clone phones on the market for a while, and some of the software has become quite sophisticated, it's more than possible that one of these UI's has been ported to the Magic (as it's a good bet that more than a few of these clone devices run on Android/Linux anyway).
Notice that he doesn't open the App store, or Safari, or the music player. Definitely NOT actually iOS, but certainly something I would be interested in seeing ported to other devices!

[Q] Install iPhone OS on an Android Phone?

I was wondering if you can install the iPhone OS on an Android phone? I was looking around and saw that you can install Android on an iPhone, but I wasn't sure if you could do it the other way around.
I have a Sony Xperia X10 if that makes any difference.
Thanks
iPhone is Mac, it is proprietary .. It would be illegal even if you could ..
it should be illegal

iOS is crap, no developer will consider doing that.
no, this will never happen. it would be a large amount of anyones time to get it working, if it ever could with the amount of things youd have to patch.
why?
not to be pessimistic about mac, but why would you install it?
If you have hav an android phone, why would you make its characteristics similar to an iphone? I personally would not do it because Iphone is not java based and Android is which makes it more fun.
iphone is iphone , android is android , it is impossible you can have an android phone with iphone os or an iphone with android platform . If you want an iphone os , why don't you just buy an iphone instead of android phone , i wonder ?

Not entirely true. You can put android on the iPhone, look up idroid. Although, it's horribly programmed and barely functional. Regardless, it's possible with the right dev.

Impossible-no
Many people that have an iPhone do not like the iOS, so a dev went and made an android based app. Those that have an Android realize that Android>iOS and do not want to make an app to emulate the iPhone. As an earlier post said, if you want iOS, get an iDevice.

Not everybody realizes that Android>iOS and will stick with iOS. Another reason is that jailbreaking allows piracy off nearly every app/game on the App Store, yet rooting a Android based phone does not allow this.
if u want an iphone buy an iphone and let android be android ¬¬
Android+IOS=Phone Jesus
I kind of disagree. I like both IOS and Android, of course with preference to Android's development oppertunities. I would love to have my Android partitioned (or something of the sort) to run both IOS and Android. Similar to how I have Ubuntu and Win 7 on my laptop, with shared file systems.
There's a big difference between iOS and Android.Proprietary on one hand and an Open Source OS on the other hand!Trying to port Android in iPhone or the other way around with iOS would be too much time consuming and useless. Why would someone prefer to have iOS running on his phone (if the phone can support it), while he can very smoothly run Android and have exactly the same appibilities with an iPhone, or even more??
iOS on Android phone is impossible right now. You can get a lot of similary to iOS themes but noyhing else. And why people choose iOS ? 1.more apps 2.They dont need to root phone or install some custom rom's to run better, Iphone is a good, fast device from first unboxing (Android phones in prices like Iphone 4,4S are too very smooth without mods ;D ).

[Q] [2 ALL DEVS] Any chance to see WebOS/iOS/WP7 on NS/NS4G?

Far from it. The reason we'll probably never see webos or wp7 on the nexus s is that neither of those os's are fully open source like android, in fact wp7 is completely closed source.
webOS was ported to the Evo 3D but virtually nothing worked from what I remember, making it far from useful, useable, or anything past booting really.
Ios - Never been ported to anything non-apple (as far as I know).
Meego - Possible I guess, but I dont know why anyone would bother putting that amount of time into it.
WebOS - Looking possible, its going open source i hear, but the nexus S community is only going to decrease due to the release of the Galaxy Nexus
Windows Mobile - Dead
Windows Phone 7 - This was ported to the HD2 as the HD2 was used as a test phone for the OS and the drivers got leaked! Microsoft used it as it was a high spec Windows Mobile phone. (It got android as it was very similar to other HTC phones that ran Android, such as the N1 and Desire)
Ubuntu - I guess, probably wouldn't be too hard to get going, why anyone would want to I have no idea.
BB OS - hahaha...
so.... no interest.

I realize this isn't what you're looking for, but if you're just interested in emulating the WP7 look, give Launcher7 from the market a try. I'd also recommend using the Ubermusic music player with the optional metro theme.

Alternate world without Android

Say that android was never released (or discontinued after initial release as a failure)
What do you think would be
(*) Outcome of the mobile world?
(*) what phone you'd be using?
I think, if Android ceased to exist, ill still be on old Windows Mobile.
Microsoft wouldnt have felt to need to update to WP7 as they had no need to compete with anyone apart from apple.
So as a result WP7 ceases to exist
I think apple would not have introduced multitasking or the fancy new features in their iPhones. They have no one to compete with
I don't think dual core would be high end (1ghz would be high end even in 2012, and would be ground breaking news)
I don't think apple will have released an ipad. They wouldnt need to compete.
I think I would still be using a WM phone if android didn't exist, and have no tablet...
HTC would still be a unknown company that no one has heard of, and they produce phones for carriers
XDA site wont be as popular or well known as now.
The mobile world would still be a few steps behind
More to come ..
List what you think!

PalmOS will still be dominating the market strong
Apple will have gone bankrupt, as Microsoft couldn't afford to buy out Apple's doomed stock, due Microsoft own low sales of Windows CE v10.1
PalmOS would have been v15.6 by now with new improved GUI and Eye pupil control to select & run Apps from the phone, with voice dictation a voice command perfected even for people with heavy accent
while still keeping the good old fashioned pen, for those that likes to hand write on the screen as before
PalmOS has become open source, and old Apps are still backward compatible with the latest PalmOS
making the life of Doctors and tons of other professional easier without having to wait for new Apps releases to work on the new OS
Without Android I think Apple would be very dominant in the cell phone market.
I don't think there would be many (or nearly as many) lawsuits being thrown around b/c Apple wouldn't feel threatened.
I don't think the iPhone would really be changed as much though. Apple has a very strong almost cult following that will shell out the money every year for a new device so I don't think they really need to succumb to the trends of the market. If anything I agree they wouldn't have multitasking and probably no dual core processor.
Sadly I'd probably own an iPhone

Plenty of cultures don't have power, I think we'd be OK, and people would have innovated another type of smart phone OS. I think a better question is "What has Android done to change the market, and maybe the world?"
Windows Phone would be around but be different in Name/Look... iOS wouldn't be as rushed to add MMS and so on.. SO it would look the same (surprise surprise) but with some missing features. Windows Mobile OS would probably continue the look of 6.5 with overall changes to compete with iOS...
Overall Android caused a lot of thinking for both Apple and Microsoft ... If only we can see into a world like that... Now im curious

[DISCUSSION] next OEM OS?

Sorry i got if i got the Title wrong but pretty much what im trying to get at is what is everyone's opinion on what the next OS from a Phone OEM? (HTC LG Samsung) it could have been that Samsung was jealous of Motorola's spotlight when google bought Moto back in (2012 was it? seems like a long time ago) and Samsung decided to make android less "Android" with the Galaxy notePRO 12.1 Launcher. Samsung also made the the new Samsung Gear 2 / neo (note that they dropped the galaxy name) With their own Ti zen OS instead of android like the previous model (there are reports of that new Tizen phone coming out aswell, it could be that they are just trying to try something new). what i'm trying to get at is does anyone else think HTC or LG or Motorola or Lenovo or whoever produces android phones/tablets make Slap android in the face with their own OS? i think this "Could" be the beginning of androids downfall
please Bark at me i want to see everyone's opinion!
To me it looks like Android is the first mobile OS to be so widely used by so many different manufacturers. And the OEM operating systems are the ones that usually fade. So to me, anything is possible. Nokia had Symbian, only one or two phones for other brands were ever made. Each had their own locked in operating system.. Windows mobile was always around but never got anywhere without Nokia and that is probably where it will stay..
Basically, things are different now. I have a feeling this new Samsung OS will be lower end? The only way Android would lose its place I think, is if another OEM independent OS came to challenge it.

interesting thought, its obvious that it will take lots of effort to make android lose its place but i was only wanting to see other peoples thought on it, i agree with Tizen OS being low end, its supposed to be able to run android apps like Jolla and the newest blackberry tablet, for now all tizen looks like is a run down version of Touchwiz UX. hopefully nothing special, if its open source? hell yeah im going to get one. i am really interested how XDA is going to take on it.
I highly doubt it would be open source! To most of these companies that are truly focussed on money making that sort of thing is an abomination. Nokia planned to make Symbian open source, unfortunately there werea couple of other companies who had been involved in it's creation who blocked this at the last minute. I have a feeling Samsung might have been one of those companies but I might be wrong.. (I really miss Symbian by the way, nothing could multitask and do hard work like it, not even my S4 mini. And it ran on such low end specs! If it could have been used with today's hardware they would have had dynamite. I believe Nokia were trying to give a gift to their community before their demise and they were halted by greed, now Symbian is gone anyway)
All that said, I really don't think it will be open source, I believe it's true purpose is the opposite of that. Phone manufacturers don't seem to like their buyers actually truly owning their devices for some reason. I would love to try all these things out but Nokia was all I could ever afford, my S4 mini was a gift.

did a little research https://www.tizen.org/ your saying at last moment tizen will also become closed?
You are right, I was actually talking without really knowing. I had the impression it was a Samsung made OS but I see on the website it is by the 'Linux Foundation', interesting.
My cynical nature thinks they will go closed source upon release, once they have had all the help in the world from the community. But I do not know. If it comes to more devices then just Samsung, maybe there is hope.
Maybe it depends on who ends up with licensing.

i doubt it would come upon other OEM devices, but so far since its open source and based on Linux, does that mean they are going to try to copy android (samsung can never think up of their own things huh? lots of apple lawsuits.)? if it will stay open source, does that mean we get some kind of control with flashing New OS's? (custom roms) i cant wait for it xD, samsungs old Bada OS was a great start.
It would be a pity if it was a knock off of Android or even resembled the Touchwiz UI. Those law suits were stupid because this is how phones have looked and behaved for years and years.
I would like to see a more pure Linux for mobile phones. There are so many Linux desktop environments that would be great on a phone. Enlightenment, Gnome 3 and of course Ubuntu's own Unity (at least they have the right idea). And there is no reason it shouldn't be able to run the same programs as on desktop Linux, many phones out power older Linux compatible PCs these days.
If Tizen was pure Linux with a completely fresh UI for a phone that has not been done before and completely open to the user, I would make every plan possible to get hold of one. It sounds so much like a dream that I think we will just be disappointed.
We need more open devices around first before we can have more open OSs and choices, as far as I see it.

Right? im surprised a developer has not started a kick-starter to help with making a Open source Phone with most likely pure linux running atop. Bada OS (samsungs old OS, pretty much what tizen is now) has lots of common areas with touchwiz UI http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bada probably around the Galaxy s2 look though. and they changed from touchwiz on tizen because intel is working with them. cant wait to see how Jolla sailfish and nemo mobile will do.
