I have recently started dabbling with rooting my phone and guess what- I LOVE IT!...I have been having so much fun getting the phone streamlined without the unnecessary apps and getting a faster response from the phone, that I want to do it for my wife's phone as well. She has the same HTC Hero and has been complaining of the poor response of her phone for a while. I want to clone my phone on her phone while I keep playing with the configurations and improvements on my phone. Is there a way to migrate all the changes I have done on mine into her phone seamlessly? I was thinking of some sort of nandroid backup made on mine, being used on hers- (I am a noob, so play nicely )
As far as I know, although I've never tested it...
If you root her phone and put the same recovery image on her phone (albeit Clockwork, Amon_Ra, or Darch) then it SHOULD successfully restore a nandroid image made on your phone. It might be easiest to just pop your sdcard into her phone when you restore your nandroid, that way you take no chances on the files being corrupted in the process.
The only problem I see with this is that if you restore a rom onto another phone, you'll in turn have to delete your sync data afterwards and then redo the setup with her gmail, etc etc.
Hope this helps and good luck! Glad you're enjoying your phone!
Doesnt work, I tried to use a nandroid of Fresh 2.4 from my wifes phone so I could update PRL and I kept getting errors
Both are HTC Hero's
It did boot up and all, but data and all that was messed up, maybe if he edited the build prop to match her phone?

Perhaps. But I wouldn't think so. If that was the case wouldn't you have to manually edit them everytime you flashed? I thought that data was kept on a separate partition... am I wrong?

No clue as to why it didnt work for me but it didnt...
When I had my phone replaced, I saved the nandroid from my original phone, used the same SD card, and had "my" phone back up and running in no time.
This shouldn't be an issue really.
My only question is, why not have the wife pick her ROM, theme, apps, customizations for herself?

I think the key word is "my" The nandroid I took from my wifes Hero worked for her phone. I had nandroided back and did a PRL update on her phone. I took that same file and placed it on my Hero and did the nandroid, it booted and everything Excited I went to update PRL and tried but kept getting a error. I tried to update profile and would get the same error.
Why?
Can it work if it got edited?
I dont know, I think it builds something on first boot that takes your info (cant remember what its called) and when trying to connect it needs that info. If it doesnt match what the ROM is telling the network thats where the errors come from, atleast I think, lol.
Try it, maybe it just didnt work for me.
I agree with riggsandroid though, flash her a clean install and let her pick and choose what she wants
Why not just use titanium backup on one, then restore it on the other? Unless I'm misunderstanding the problem.

I have a Koodo Nexus S on rogers currently running CM 7.0.3. I have had the urge to flash a few ROMS and i have done so unsuccessfully. Every time i flash a ROM i lose my data connection.
I flash back to stock, i lose my data connection. It shows that i have a UMTS (3G) connection but no data can be transfered.
I double check my APN's every time i flash but i always have to nandroid back to CM to get the phone to work properly.
I have also flashed and got the carrier to reprovision my data to no avail...can someone help me out? Perhaps the build.prop file?
have you tried manually re-creating the APN settings?
the ones from backup might be corrupted?

Yes sir. I delete the default ones that come with the ROM be it factory or custom ones and replace them with what works with my CM nandroid. My network state shows connected. In the 4636 dialer menu it also shows connected but the ping fails and i cannot browse or setup an account.
Anyone got any ideas?

I just got TWRP installed with the awesome help of gunnyman and now i'm on to my next step on my way to a custom rom. Which (correct me if i'm wrong) is making a backup.
TWRP is very user friendly..but not enough for me sadly. When I'm making a backup there are several check boxes of what to backup and I'm not sure which ones should be checked. Could anyone help me with that?
Also the backup will be stored on my sd card, which on the one x is internal..so its safe or what? Should I put on on dropbox just in case? Is there any reason after loading a custom rom that my backup would no longer be available or not work?
Are there any other steps between the backup and installing the custom rom.
annnddd one last question. This part of the cleanrom post scares me.. can someone explain what it means? Will this leave my phone unable to connect to 4g?
Special GSM Patch:
Removes the AT&T 4G Icon and reverts to standard GSM "H" Icon.
Unlocks the Hotspot in its entirety so ALLLLLLL people can use it regardless of carrier!
Wait for it... Unlocks the magical LTE Toggle capability. Does not work on AT&T but does work on all other carriers AFAIK.
This patch CAN be applied to ATT if you want. It wont hurt anything that I know of. I was also told that if you manually program APN's that you can toggle the LTE toggle on ATT. I gave up on testing this but it did work a couple times for me but I could not get it consistent. If you can help the community figure it out for ATT then lets do it!

Just use all the default options at first. Don't worry about what boxes are checked and all that. Go in and do a backup. Go back out and do a wipe I think on twrp its called factory reset, data and cache. Then wipe dalvik cache. Then rinse and repeat just for the heck of it. Then go and install the rom and reboot. Set things up and let things ssettle in. Then if you want go flash any mods such as battery percent and wifi tether. don't bother with the GSM patch just yet. You probably won't need or want it anyways.
Your backup should be fine on the phone but I always copy NY first to my PC. Dropbox would take too long for me. It's about a gig. I actually erase all my backups off the device once I realise I don't need it.

Also the Nandroid backups are too big to upload to Dropbox. I've tried.
The GSM patch just changes your icons for data (ie LTE, H+, 3G, etc).

This happens every time I flash a JB ROM.
Everything else seems to work fine.
But...
As soon as I disable wifi, my mobile data greys out and I have no internet connection. If I re-enable wifi, my mobile data comes back.
If I am out of wifi range, mobile data greys out and no internet connection.
When mobile data works....it works.
Looking at my APN settings shows no APN's at all. It will let me populate a new APN, but when I press "save" it just goes away and leaves nothing. I've tried rebooting after also.
My IMEI information shows up in the settings screen. Not jibberish.
Flashing back to stock restores my mobile data fine.
Mobile data works fine when I upgrade to ICS from GB before attempting JB.
The phone reacts to flashing exactly as the instructions indicate.
This has happened every time I try to go from ICS to JB.
I tried completely wiping (int sd and all)my phone before flashing (over and over again) and I'm following andros instructions fully.
While on JB, could using Odin to restore an efs backup I made while on GB help this? Is it possible to just upload the backup without returning to stock? I tried to restore the efs backup with Root Explorer but it didn't fix anything obviously. And I can't seem to even connect fully using EFS Pro (won't see com ports on the Qualcomm screen). Nitrality is an app that claims to backup/restore the efs folder but I haven't tried restoring one yet.
I'm not even sure the problem lies within the efs folder.
Ive gone through this a million times and it is the same no matter what I do or "try". It is the same for me with any JB ROM.
Searching the forum has gotten me this far, but now I'm stuck. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I refuse to accept failure.

Re: [Q] Loose mobile data and APN's after any/every JB flash.
Now I'm thinking an app like GetRil might solve this. But the Infuse is unsupported.
Does anyone know of a similar app that supports the Infuse?

idk..this may sound silly but if you want to try:
1. go back to stock gb
2. take out sd card
3. factory reset
4. cm9 flash twice..run it to see it imei and data is intact. then boot into cwm. factory reset
5. flash a 4.1.1 build..check imei and mobile data.
6. then flash 4.2.1 build
...disclosure: i'm guessing
Re: [Q] Loose mobile data and APN's after any/every JB flash.
Hmm. Interesting. I didn't think of trying to step up the JB versions. I'll try that and report back. Thx.

I first re-downloaded all my ROM's and GAPPs on the computer.
I've been able to keep mobile data all the way to 4.1.2.(Paranoid) But after that it's as I described:
IMEI shows up and is correct.
No APN's listed and can't save a new APN.
"Mobile Data Status" shows disconnected.
If wifi is on and connected, mobile data "works" fine, but still shows no APN's and disconnected in settings as above.
Resetting to default APN says it completed, but nothing's there. I tried rebooting after and checking.
Wanna hear something really strange...
Since I knew I was going to have to go back to stock once again, I decided to step back to 4.1.2 just to see what would happen.
4.1.2 installed fine and my mobile data was once again working correctly.
Still working on it.

very odd...I guess your phone doesn't like 4.2.1.
Good luck with it, though.
Sounded like you've pin-pointed the problem to a change from the 4.1.2 to 4.2.1.
Im losing it all after i went back to stock gb 2.3.6
I changed the APN settings on my device as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1791526 advised. I'm running 4.2.1 AoCp and my mobile data, MMS, etc. all works fine.

Are you themed? Believe it or not....a heavy theme could do crazy things.
From One Of My Many Collective Devices!
mine would loose its imie. i would have to flash back to stock gb and then cm9 let it boot up and then flash cm10 4.1.2 if i flashed another rom before cm10 4.1.2 my imie was gone.i could flash any4.1 or 4.2 rom after flashing cm10 and be fine.

Thanks but nope.
This happens every time even when starting fresh from stock.
I am not altering the ROM itself before flashing in any way.
Immediately after flashing a 4.2.+ from 4.1.2 the APN's are not appearing. But my IMEI info is.
But if I go back to 4.1, the APN's are there so I'm thinking the APN's aren't being deleted during the flash?
In the process of flashing, I've made sure all the ROM's "worked" and the APN's were there before stepping to the next one.
I feel like I'm insane.
Re: [Q] Loose mobile data and APN's after any/every JB flash.
Can anyone tell me what controls the migration of the APN info when flashing from 4.1 to 4.2?
Also, what controls the addition of new APN's and where are they saved?
Is there any place I can look within the ROM or kernel to help see if the APN info is really missing.
Personally, I think the APN info is there, but something is not installing completely when flashing.

This thread is exactly what I'm talking about. Unfortunately it's for the SII, but it's the same. The bummer is that we can't run GetRil on the infuse. I'm stuck again. At least it's nice to know I'm not the only one with this particular issue. Any help?

It's working!!! :good:
I grabbed the UVKJ6 modem, flashed it, and APNs are displayed and working.
I've tested with 4.2.2 versions of Beanstalk, Paranoid, SlimRom, PAC, and The Collective's (shout out to dman who spoiled me with Zeus).
Tried to re-download and install the JB version of my trusty UCLB3 modem, but it would not work (for me) with any of these ROMs.
I've never been so happy to have my notification bar freeze! Lol.
I'm assuming this all has something to do with the stage of development for JB? Idk.
I can't thank you enough. You really came through when I needed help. Thank you Sir.
Good to hear.
You Prolly just needed to re flash a modem.
Blscallions deserves the credit for putting those together.

I had to flash a different modem. Not sure why, but it fixed my problem. What I did was:
1. Downloaded a few different modems from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31097259
2. Reboot into recovery.
3. Select to Install zip from SD card.
4. Locate one of the modem. (In the folder).
5. Flash the modem.
6. Clear cache and dalvik cache.
7. I selected to fix permissions. Probably don't have to do this. But I did.
8. Reboot and test. If it doesn't work, flash another modem and try again.
If no modem works, then its probably not the modem. Hopefully you removed the SD card when flashing from ICS to JB. And hopefully your IMEI # is showing and correct.
It goes quick. I hope this works for you. If you need more detailed instructions, just let me know.

Well, after a lot of searching I finally found the fix. For anyone else that might have this happen heres a zip to flash.
