[Q] Why can't i get data connection after flashing a new ROM? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Koodo Nexus S on rogers currently running CM 7.0.3. I have had the urge to flash a few ROMS and i have done so unsuccessfully. Every time i flash a ROM i lose my data connection.
I flash back to stock, i lose my data connection. It shows that i have a UMTS (3G) connection but no data can be transfered.
I double check my APN's every time i flash but i always have to nandroid back to CM to get the phone to work properly.
I have also flashed and got the carrier to reprovision my data to no avail...can someone help me out? Perhaps the build.prop file?

have you tried manually re-creating the APN settings?
the ones from backup might be corrupted?

Yes sir. I delete the default ones that come with the ROM be it factory or custom ones and replace them with what works with my CM nandroid. My network state shows connected. In the 4636 dialer menu it also shows connected but the ping fails and i cannot browse or setup an account.

Anyone got any ideas?

[Q] Sprint settings for Nexus S

Hi,
I have a Google Nexus S phone with Sprint. I was playing with QPST and CDMA workshop and for some reason the SMS messaging and data aren't working anymore. Phone calling does work well though.
Unfortunately, I didn't save the settings for my phone before using CDMA workshop. I called sprint but they were not able to help.
Please help! :\
I'd try full factory wipe, wipe cache, wipe dalvik. Then I'd flash whatever rom I was using before and keep my fingers crossed when I reboot that everything is fixed. Then I'd keep my fingers out of the software you were futzing around with so it doesn't happen again. I'm not trying to be a smartass, I'm saying what I'd try.

None of the things you've suggested affect the Radio (qpst/epst) settings.
Get a flashable zip of the latest OTA update, unzip it, and fastboot flash the radio.img. Either that or, if you're on the stock rom, dial *#*#72786#*#*, enter your MSL, and clear the settings (it factory resets/re-activates your phone's radio without wiping any data.)
You probably messed with the NV settings..
Flash back to stock
Go into setting and do a system update so sprint can reconfigure your setting ota

Bradart, I had the stock ROM, I dialed that number and now I can't even make/receive phone calls.
lilgrass71, yes I was testing something with NV items. I had a friend telling me his settings (but unfortunately he's on Verizon). I tried them on my phone and now I can't even connect to sprint network! it keeps searching for network and never finds anything. With this I can't even connect to sprint and update my profile or do anything! :\
Is there anything I can do to restore EVERYTHING (NV items, etc) to factory setting? the power-volume thing and privacy->restore-to-factory settings aren't working...
I'd greatly appreciate your help!
You have to go back to stock.... I mean stock stock by running the exe from Samsung
forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13663567&postcount=13
Then you can update profile one the phone is set up... But that's only of you didn't mess with any meid or pesn settings in qpst and qxdm.... That'll be illegal Tsk tsk....haha

APN won't stick

I have a Nexus S I9020a and I'm running brainmaster's jelly bean ROM with the air kernel. My APN settings will not save. Right now I can not get data or make phone calls. Sometimes if I toggle airplane mode I will get data but its not permanent, if the phone reboots then the APN settings are gone.
I know its not the Sim card because it works in my old iPhone.
Any help is much appreciated. THANKS.

[Q] [SOLVED] Loose mobile data and APN's after any/every JB flash.

This happens every time I flash a JB ROM.
Everything else seems to work fine.
But...
As soon as I disable wifi, my mobile data greys out and I have no internet connection. If I re-enable wifi, my mobile data comes back.
If I am out of wifi range, mobile data greys out and no internet connection.
When mobile data works....it works.
Looking at my APN settings shows no APN's at all. It will let me populate a new APN, but when I press "save" it just goes away and leaves nothing. I've tried rebooting after also.
My IMEI information shows up in the settings screen. Not jibberish.
Flashing back to stock restores my mobile data fine.
Mobile data works fine when I upgrade to ICS from GB before attempting JB.
The phone reacts to flashing exactly as the instructions indicate.
This has happened every time I try to go from ICS to JB.
I tried completely wiping (int sd and all)my phone before flashing (over and over again) and I'm following andros instructions fully.
While on JB, could using Odin to restore an efs backup I made while on GB help this? Is it possible to just upload the backup without returning to stock? I tried to restore the efs backup with Root Explorer but it didn't fix anything obviously. And I can't seem to even connect fully using EFS Pro (won't see com ports on the Qualcomm screen). Nitrality is an app that claims to backup/restore the efs folder but I haven't tried restoring one yet.
I'm not even sure the problem lies within the efs folder.
Ive gone through this a million times and it is the same no matter what I do or "try". It is the same for me with any JB ROM.
Searching the forum has gotten me this far, but now I'm stuck. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I refuse to accept failure.

Re: [Q] Loose mobile data and APN's after any/every JB flash.
Now I'm thinking an app like GetRil might solve this. But the Infuse is unsupported.
Does anyone know of a similar app that supports the Infuse?

idk..this may sound silly but if you want to try:
1. go back to stock gb
2. take out sd card
3. factory reset
4. cm9 flash twice..run it to see it imei and data is intact. then boot into cwm. factory reset
5. flash a 4.1.1 build..check imei and mobile data.
6. then flash 4.2.1 build
...disclosure: i'm guessing
Re: [Q] Loose mobile data and APN's after any/every JB flash.
Hmm. Interesting. I didn't think of trying to step up the JB versions. I'll try that and report back. Thx.

I first re-downloaded all my ROM's and GAPPs on the computer.
I've been able to keep mobile data all the way to 4.1.2.(Paranoid) But after that it's as I described:
IMEI shows up and is correct.
No APN's listed and can't save a new APN.
"Mobile Data Status" shows disconnected.
If wifi is on and connected, mobile data "works" fine, but still shows no APN's and disconnected in settings as above.
Resetting to default APN says it completed, but nothing's there. I tried rebooting after and checking.
Wanna hear something really strange...
Since I knew I was going to have to go back to stock once again, I decided to step back to 4.1.2 just to see what would happen.
4.1.2 installed fine and my mobile data was once again working correctly.
Still working on it.

very odd...I guess your phone doesn't like 4.2.1.
Good luck with it, though.
Sounded like you've pin-pointed the problem to a change from the 4.1.2 to 4.2.1.
Im losing it all after i went back to stock gb 2.3.6
I changed the APN settings on my device as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1791526 advised. I'm running 4.2.1 AoCp and my mobile data, MMS, etc. all works fine.

Yup. Those are the settings I try to input, and the thread I try to use to do it. But it won't save.

Are you themed? Believe it or not....a heavy theme could do crazy things.
From One Of My Many Collective Devices!
mine would loose its imie. i would have to flash back to stock gb and then cm9 let it boot up and then flash cm10 4.1.2 if i flashed another rom before cm10 4.1.2 my imie was gone.i could flash any4.1 or 4.2 rom after flashing cm10 and be fine.

Thanks but nope.
This happens every time even when starting fresh from stock.
I am not altering the ROM itself before flashing in any way.
Immediately after flashing a 4.2.+ from 4.1.2 the APN's are not appearing. But my IMEI info is.
But if I go back to 4.1, the APN's are there so I'm thinking the APN's aren't being deleted during the flash?
In the process of flashing, I've made sure all the ROM's "worked" and the APN's were there before stepping to the next one.
I feel like I'm insane.
Re: [Q] Loose mobile data and APN's after any/every JB flash.
Can anyone tell me what controls the migration of the APN info when flashing from 4.1 to 4.2?
Also, what controls the addition of new APN's and where are they saved?
Is there any place I can look within the ROM or kernel to help see if the APN info is really missing.
Personally, I think the APN info is there, but something is not installing completely when flashing.

This thread is exactly what I'm talking about. Unfortunately it's for the SII, but it's the same. The bummer is that we can't run GetRil on the infuse. I'm stuck again. At least it's nice to know I'm not the only one with this particular issue. Any help?

It's working!!! :good:
I grabbed the UVKJ6 modem, flashed it, and APNs are displayed and working.
I've tested with 4.2.2 versions of Beanstalk, Paranoid, SlimRom, PAC, and The Collective's (shout out to dman who spoiled me with Zeus).
Tried to re-download and install the JB version of my trusty UCLB3 modem, but it would not work (for me) with any of these ROMs.
I've never been so happy to have my notification bar freeze! Lol.
I'm assuming this all has something to do with the stage of development for JB? Idk.
I can't thank you enough. You really came through when I needed help. Thank you Sir.
Good to hear.
You Prolly just needed to re flash a modem.
Blscallions deserves the credit for putting those together.
You can add a [SOLVED] to your thread title
I'm having the same problem as you, but my data won't work at all even after turning wifi on/off. On the pull-down menu it says that I have no service. I would love to try the modem fix, but this is all brand new to me and I have no idea how to do it. Can someone help me out here?

I had to flash a different modem. Not sure why, but it fixed my problem. What I did was:
1. Downloaded a few different modems from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31097259
2. Reboot into recovery.
3. Select to Install zip from SD card.
4. Locate one of the modem. (In the folder).
5. Flash the modem.
6. Clear cache and dalvik cache.
7. I selected to fix permissions. Probably don't have to do this. But I did.
8. Reboot and test. If it doesn't work, flash another modem and try again.
If no modem works, then its probably not the modem. Hopefully you removed the SD card when flashing from ICS to JB. And hopefully your IMEI # is showing and correct.
It goes quick. I hope this works for you. If you need more detailed instructions, just let me know.

Sim Unlock No Service

I performed method 1 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1232107&nocache=1 to sim unlock my phone so I can use my optus sim (it was originally vodafone). The problem is I've tried many different roms and every time I boot I have to manually select the network while my APN settings won't save so I can't access mobile data at all. It's actually the same problem MrSoulSOng posted in a thread:
"Does anyone have an idea why after flashing this rom, it won't detect my sim card? Also because there is no sim, the is no option for mobile networks in the settings.
I came from Bruce's old rom, with a full wipe prior to flashing. I've had to revert to the nandroid backup of my previous rom in the meantime.
Oh and I've searched heaps and just can't find anything regarding the issue.
Sorry to quote myself, but I've managed to get the Rom to find my sim by searching for networks. But it never 'sticks' after boot?
So my problem is now the APN saving issue. I've tried so much. I've tried editing it, but it doesn't save. Next I tried editing the 'apns-config.xml' file yet it did nothing either. Lastly I tried the 'APN Backup and Restore' method.. Converting it to a system app etc.. But no joy!
Could it be to do with the radio I'm using? I'm using the 11.76A.3504.00P_11.24A.3504.31_M... With the RIL 4.0.0037HMQ [2]
Any help would be greatly appreciated!"
I tried to unlock it again using method 2 but I'm getting the same issue. The latest rom I flashed (unofficial cm12) in fact won't even make outgoing calls but incoming works.

[Q] How badly did I mess up??

I got the nexus 5 from freedompop for $140 a little bit ago. I had it sitting around for a while to gift to my sister, because I already have a nexus 5 that I've rooted (stock rom). But I got the idea that since my old nexus 5's battery isnt so great anymore, that I could transfer all my files from it to the new one by nandroid and make use of the better battery! Great idea except I didn't do any nandroid backup of the original freedompop rom or partitions in twrp for some stupid reason. I just restored all partitions (system data cache boot efs) in twrp from my old nexus 5 to the new nexus 5 without thinking.
It booted up fine but when I inserted my sim in the new n5, it said no service. I thought ok, maybe I just need to add APNs. I added the T-Mobile APN listed on their support pages, and I got a signal but it was only EDGE (at full strength). I'm getting emails and text messages so I thought it just needs further tweaking to get to LTE. Now I tried adding APNs again, resetting them, switching airplane mode on/off, switching 4g/3g/2g, turning data roaming on/off. I even tried flashing a factory 4.4.4, a factory 5.1.1 image, even M preview, and did all those steps with the APN again but I still can't get LTE signal.
After mucking about with it for a few days, I realized my mistake: I overwrote the EFS partition of the new phone with the old EFS and I have no backup of the new EFS.... Is this the reason I can't get LTE signal? Is there any way to rebuild the EFS data? Am I screwed forever without LTE?
Cant you just use Googles flash all bat file to wipe the phone over and start it from scratch? Or does that not help with efs?

Unfortunately it doesn't look that easy. I used the flash-all.sh scripts from nexus factory images for 4.4.4, 5.1.1, and even M preview, and they dont seem to do anything to the efs partition. I checked it by booting and then dialing *#06#, and all of them show IMEI as 0. I'm not 100% sure why it doesn't show my old phone's IMEI. Either way, I'm guessing T-Mobile won't allow LTE to a phone with a 0 IMEI. I dunno what to do and how to fix it
