Help with Roms, Kernels, other issues Galaxy Nexus Verizon - General Questions and Answers

Ok...I am extremely new to rooting and I have been spending 30+ hours trying to get jelly bean working on my galaxy nexus from vzw. I've searched forums, google, etc for answers and simple instructions while very little help. Before doing anything, I spent hours researching how to do everything and for the best roms. This was much more complicated than I thought! I give you all so much credit!
Where I'm at: I've installed cm10 toro from euro stank but I get goomanager telling me updates are availble but they are for cm9?? This is also happens with gapps, it tells me to update with a ICS zip but I have the jb gapps zip installed from 7/18. I have the teamwin thing too to manage the recovery. I have clockworkmod, goomanager, busy box, superuser, and rom manager v5.0.0.8.
I tried to get a kernel but gave up after not understanding how to do that since cm10 comes with one. I wanted trinity and have the zip downloaded but no idea how to do it.
I'm not even sure I have this all running right or if I have a good rom. Can anyone help me? I'd really appreciate it!
Jill

New to rooting with this phone

I have rooted 3 phones prior to this one. I have it all set up and running Refuse 1.7. I have seen that there are a good load of roms available for the infuse 4g. Many of them say 2.3.5, etc. Is that the android version needed by the phone before installing the rom? I am on 2.2.1 and am worried about installing any other rom, than one which has froyo in the name leaving me with only 3 choices. Any help would be appreciated I want to try a miui rom or something else from here but am worried that since I have 2.2.1 when I install one that has 2.3 in its name I will brick.

No bro, the " 2.3.5" or "2.3.6" its that ROMs Android version, not the one needed to install it, still you do need a modified recovery to easily install a custom rom. I would personally recomend this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1220088
as a good guide for new guys trying to install custom roms since the instructions are very detailed and hardly would give you trouble. After installing that rom you would have gathered the necessary knowledge to choose your next rom like MIUI or CM7 or another samsung Infuse rom or Samsung port to Infuse.

[Q] Suggested must have tweaks/apps/mods/tutorials...

I am new to custom roms and find myself totally indulged in this science.
So currently im running the i535 vzn on clean rom 5.6, lk 3.0.57, and vrblk.
I am looking for suggestions on what others see as must have tweaks/mods/apps. The only things I have seen thus far are rom toolbox, goo manager, pimp my rom, titanium backup, twrp, super su, better battery stats...I have been dibble dabbling around forums the past couple months but am looking for some direction in this new interest.

You don't have to worry about the tweaks and mods as those are usually included in the ROM. Some Devs even give you links to mods that work on their ROMs but didn't include them in the build. As for apps my must have app is DS Battery Saver.
thanks for the reply, everything helps

[Q] ROMS with GApps?

Hello, I just rooted my Galaxy S3 for Verizon for the first time yesterday, therefore I am fairly new to this. After I flashed CM10 using TWRP, my Google apps are gone. I've tried flashing gapps on TWRP but it gives me a message saying "unfortunately, Google Play has stopped working." I know that this is due to the licensing issues and all, so my question is, what ROMS can I flash that has GApps available in it?
Thanks in advance!

To answer your question, any TW based roms will have Gapps with it. So practically any rom in the Verizon Galaxy S III Android Development forum would have it. To your issue, are you sure you flashed the right Gapps version? Just as reference you can get any version from here http://goo.im/gapps I assumed you flashed 10.1 version of CM since they are the latest which you should be using the 20130301 version of Gapps following the table that is on that website.
This might be a stupid question, but where can I find this forum? And yes, I did flash that version of Gapps... And correction; I have the 10.0.0-d2vzw version of CM. Am I supposed to get another version of Gapps? I really like this ROM and I want to try it out for a few weeks until I switch to a new one.

Forum section for us is http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1708 Go there and click on Verizon Galaxy S III Android Development forum. If you look at the website link I gave you, they have a table. On the left, it shows the CM versions and on the right shows the corresponding Gapps version you are suppose to use with that CM version. Since you are using 10.0.0, if you look on the left you will see 10.0.x and on the right, you will see the corresponding gapps version 20121011. You use that version for CM 10. Btw if you find CM 10 interesting go to the Verizon Galaxy S III Original Android Development forum. They have roms based on CM, AOSP, AOKP, etc. Be sure to read up more on flashing since you are pretty new to this. Bricking phones isn't fun lol
What ROMS do you personally recommend? And I know! I almost bricked it yesterday, and trust me, it was not fun at all.

Depends on your preference. If you are into the Stock TouchWiz look but without the bloat that verizon puts, I recommend CleanRom. I also recommend it to people who are new to flashing since it is a pretty simple rom. This rom is pretty much as close as you can get to getting stock reliability. If you want to go into a more customize it yourself TouchWiz roms, I would suggest SynergyROM, Jelly 'Beans' Rom, Hyperdrive, or Axis. Besides each having their own tweaks and sometimes themes, during install, you get to choose which apps/settings/kernel/theme, you want to have, so pretty much you get to customize almost all aspects of the rom to your liking. They all also get updated on a somewhat regular basis. You will have to flash all of them and play with them to see which one is to your liking.
For CM 10.1 based roms, CM 10.1 Nightlies, Slimbean, Carbon Rom. I would be careful with these roms, as they are a bit temperamental with some phones. Most of the time you are fine and you won't get into an issue but the times that you do, you will have to read through the threads to see if there is a solution to it.
There are also the PARANOIDANDROID and ParanoidKANGdroid roms, I haven't personally tried them but heard good things, they are also based on CM 10.1
I really appreciate your help, bro. For now, I'll stick to the CM 10.1 ROM that I just flashed. It's good so far, and I finally got t solve my issue of gapps thanks to you.
Great example of helping someone! Posts like this are the reason why I became a member of this site and fell in love with it (actually my wife calls it addiction)! I wish there were more people helping others like this, it would only make this forum better.

What are you trying to achieve? The stock based ROMs are much more stable than the CM ROMs. There's no need or use to delete things and if you delete too much you will start to cause problems.

I am not aware of any fully functional CM based or other custom ROMs for the P62xx series. The is a CM11 ROM that is a work in progress on the forum. I would install the latest stock 4.1.2 , root and then install a third party launcher , lock screen and other items to make it look the way I want. That will get you a stable, basically custom ROM. I think its unlikely that a stable CM11 will ever appear unless Samsung releases a stock 4.4 from which to build on and CM 10 is now outdated with no developers to support it.
Have you tried the development section.. There are alot of custom roms there.. PAC, Omni to name a few..
Try the Omni4.4.2 it is still in development but it works great and having KitKat on this Tablets is awesome
Guys pardon for my ignorance(im new to this upgrading/flashing thing) but how do you install custom roms?
I'm considering it an option because after i flashed my p6200 with the new jellybean rom via odin, my tablet works until it got battery drained and now stuck on "boot-loop", I've done the CWM wipe/reset data thing but still stuck in that loading screen, I also did try reflashing it with the same jelly bean firmware but still stuck.. I'm thinking installing a custom rom might make it work again..
or if you do have the old honeycomb stock rom for P6200 DXKL2 firmware that i could use via odin.
Try this
[GT-P6200] Official ICS 4.0.4 firmware (Nov 2012) [STOCK/UNROOTED]
or
[Official FIRMWARES] Galaxy Tab Plus P6200/P6210/SGH-T869]
or
[ROM][Stock] P6200XXLB1 [16.02.2012][Android 3.2]
or
Samsung Updates Latest Firmware - LIVE!
flash via Odin

does it work for you?
I've downloaded this man.. copied it to my sdcard and then installed it through CWM recovery, now I get to the part where I had to choose stuff, like pre-installment settings like whether to choose "wipe user data" and such, and then install "samsung exclusive?" or "default install" or "remove bloatware", so there after choosing my options it then goes to this page with texts and the android robot at the background, it was so fast that I didn't even get to read what is written, i remember only "wipe?" or sort of, it goes for like a second and then restart back to the
"samsung galaxy tab 7.0 plus" loading screen, it's already been a while and it's still stuck in there, I wonder if that is normal, or again like any other stock rom i've flashed with using (odin method) this is stuck and going nowhere?
help! i wanted to post this at the development thread of this certain rom, but Im not allowed due to having few posts i guess?
and by the way, could someone share a ".pit" file for the p6200, i think it might be helpful for making this tab work again, thanks!

Installing New Roms

I recently purchased a photon Q, unlocked the bootloader and rooted it. All went well until I tried installing a new ROM. I've tried installing both Carbon and CM11 but with no luck. Thankfully, I've been keeping backups of my stock ROM so I'm still able to restore the phone and use it.
I'm currently using cwm 6.0.1.3 , and I had been trying to install the new ROMs via rom manager. I'll try to get more error details up Friday as that's when I'll attempt to install the new roms.
I tried installing the latest nightlies for both CM11 and Carbon.
Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
CWM 6.0.1.3 doesn't support SELinux and so it doesn't support any KitKat ROMs (CM11 and newer).
Use TWRP or OR as a recovery.
I wondered if that was the problem. How would I go about putting twerp on my phone? Do any threads cover that? Would it cause an issue with CWM or would I have to get rid of that in order to install TWRP?
Thanks, by the way.

The TWRP page for the Photon Q goes over how to flash TWRP.
http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/137
Any recovery you flash will simply overwrite the previous one. Simply flashing TWRP as normal will just replace CWM.
Same with OpenRecovery, simply flashing OR over CWM will replace CWM with OR.
Let us know if you have questions. I like the fastboot method, but there was an app in the Play Store TWRP Manager - which I have never used, but should work fine.
Awesome! I replaced cwm with twrp last night. I'm going to try installing Carbon either tonight or tomorrow. Thanks a bunch for the help guys!
Well, it worked...sorta. i tried installing Carbon, but there seemed to be some kind of bug that didn't let the wifi turn on(along with some performance issues) and I have horrible reception at my place so that didn't get too far in setting up the phone.
So I installed the latest CM 11 snapshot and that's working great! Pretty awesome to be on the latest version of Android for a change!
Still want to try Carbon though, do they have more stable releases or do you just have to go out on faith with the nightlies?

I run Carbon as my daily driver, no problems.
Post in the thread if you have issues. As always, clean flash before reporting any.
I posted this in a couple other threads as well but since you guys are talking about it... do you think the Carbon is superior to the CM10/11/12 roms? I've found mine to be laggy lately. Maybe it always was I'm not sure.. lol but I was thinking of going to 10.2.1 .. someone on another thread said he did that and it was like having a different phone .. it was so fast.

Please quit cross-posting. You are severely diluting any community effort to respond to you by posting the same question in so many threads...
Truth be told, YOU need to make the decision for yourself. Take a backup of your current setup and try something new, you have nothing to lose but some time. If you don't like it, restore the backup you took (please please take a backup IN RECOVERY before making any changes).
LOL sorry lets not kid ourselves. There are 4 active threads since May 24 in this sub category of the Photon Q. My intention was not to spam-post, however given the slow movement of the forum I posted in a few relevant threads in the thinking that those who were active would have subscribed and were maybe notified Sorry if I did a few too many... for tonite I probably have had a few too many Coronas (Cervesa Mas Fina!).
This device is in a production environment. There is not much room for any downtime on the device so I do not have that luxury of playing with it. All these Photon Q's I would think have the same specs so there must be a general consensus or benchmark'ed result as to which ROM offers best performance with the usability balanced. I do need more of these devices moving forward.
Funny thing, I live within 50 miles of Blackberry's campus and they have failed us yet again. Their passport phone is a little more reliable and less buggy than last years Q or Z models, however I'm still lacking a row of numbers and a dang home and back key. When are they gonna figure it out! Just using the gesture/swipe to get to the homescreen doesn't appeal to me. You can't give me a home button? Anyway #offtopic a little.. but is there no general consensus or are they so close its difficult to pick a winner?

Have tried a number of ROM's carbon, PAC, Cmod, stock ICS, & JB.
Tried different flavours & unofficial versions.
I'm now happier than ever, running stripped JB - removed bloat ware & other obsolete APK's, plus added a few niceties using xposed framework.
Phone is fast - as in no slow downs & pauses, like I was getting with carbon & PAC, battery is unbelievably long life - using an xposed battery saver module, plus I added extended power menu options.
The main killer of all the other custom ROM's is the persistent Bluetooth error during calls. This is something that has been in the ROMs since Cmod wrote the first one, as all the other are built off of it.
If you don't require Bluetooth for calls, then go for it - personally I am finally happy with the JB stripped & tweaked stock.
