What Phone - £100-120, UK, second hand, no contract, good dev community? - General Questions and Answers

Hi,
I'm in the UK, I currently have a ZTE Blade (Orange San Francisco) and am looking for a new phone. i was hoping you guys might be able to let me know what is best for my budget. I'd also be grateful if you could tell me whether you think there will be any big drops in the price of phones, so it is worth waiting a few months before buying.
I am not on a monthly contract
I would like to buy the phone second hand from eBay
Budget is £100-120
I'll need it on o2 network, but would prefer if it could be unlocked.
The camera should be decent
The GPS should work well
The screen should be good (my ZTE Blade has an OLED screen)
It should be fast and stable
It must be well made and solid
It should hold Wifi well
It should be good at getting reception
It should have a scratch resistant screen
It must be well supported by Devs so new ROM's are made keeping it up to date with Android OS's
I'm not looking for the best and latest phone just a faster and more reliable phone.
Thanks all
Cheers
Ross

Older phones with keyboards

I recently won a T-Mobile Text2Win Promotion that is giving me a Samsung Behold and a year of unlimited service. I'm selling the Behold and buying a TP2.
Interestingly enough, my girlfriend won as well. She wants a phone with a keyboard but doesn't want to spend a lot. Does anyone have any suggestions for a (used is fine) phone I could buy her that meets the following requirements?:
Full keyboard
Works with T-Mobile USA
Runs WM6 or Android
3G and GPS would be awesome.
$150 or less, but open to higher priced suggestions.
A touch screen would be nice but it's definitely not a requirement.
I found a Wing on ebay and that might be exactly what she's looking for, but I thought some other options would be nice to find. Any ideas would be great!
Thanks
How about a Blue Angel? It is about $45 dollars on ebay with a dock, and has a full keyboard, touchscreen, SD card slot and runs WM6.5. The only problem is that it doesn't have 3G. I have a bluetooth GPS receiver, so you could always use that. Although you would have to unlock it first, that takes about 2 minutes.

I will keep an eye out there, but it seems most people are selling newer phones for 200+

A Kaiser\Tilt would fit the bill
Maybe the Kaiser, it was my first WM device and I love it. I hear they're pretty cheap these days, and they fufill all the requirements listed. It also has a very active community (especially ROM development).
The devs have even gotten almost full Android with the Hero's Sense UI and full GPU support (however, no Camera and the android Wi-Fi is still pretty experimental, and GPS doesn't work).
However, the device is incompatible with T-Mobile USA's 3G frequencies, so you'd be using EDGE only. But I'm sure you could get a good deal in the XDA Marketplace. Especially if you bought one with a broken screen and replaced it yourself (not for the faint of heart though). And even if you buy one locked to another carrier (e.g. AT&T Tilt), you could still unlock it yourself.

Well perhaps the most, but if you have a good constant look there are some -200 deals for sure.
Other day I saw a guy sell a device (not remember which HTC) in less than 100usd...

Budget Android handset suggestions UK

Hey guys, my N1 died today (Long and sad story) and I need a budget handset that does the job. I don't need anything too fancy apart from a decently active community for it. I don't have a price in mind but want to keep it relatively low i.e. persuade me to spend more lol
Cheers!
Hello There, Sub £100 pounds you have 2 choices, San Fransisco from Orange, A Extremely good android Phone only £99.99, or T Mobile Pulse, which i believe is only £50, now if you want to spend up to £150, you could get HTC Wildfire, Sony X10 mini and mini pro from Vodafone

Would you recommend any of those? I saw both the wildfire and x10 mini and both look pretty nice.
My alternative is to send my Nexus one off to HTC to get it repaired at my own cost. In short my power button is gone (Flex and button) and the digitizer is brand new (I.e. it won't need replaced) but doesn't register any touches, which I believe is due to my messing around in the internals. Does anyone know how much HTC would charge at the maximum? I don't want to pay to get it shipped off and returned if i'm going to be given a >£200 figure. Ugh! What to do!
A friend of mine has the San Francisco from Orange. You get all the features you would on a high-end phone, but don't expect to be able to play the latest 3D games or take awesome shots with the camera, the UI is a bit laggy as well. Overall definitely worth £99 though.

Definitely a possible choice for me now, thanks for the input bud.
SanFran is the way to go, I had a pulse which I sold when I got my Sanfran, wouldn't go back.
San Francisco is the way to go your phone shouldn't cost that much to mend though, any problems just pm me

[Q] Choosing a phone?

Hey guys, I'm jumping ship and moving from Virgin Mobile to T Mobile. I have the option to use any phone with a sim card slot on my plan, provided it's unlocked. I am looking for something that will last a long time, as far as build quality and software / specs goes, and a big screen is a must. I am looking at the HTC Inspire 4g because it is made of durable materials and has great processors. The motorola atrix looks tempting as well, especially since it can be used as a laptop which will be useful for college.
Can anyone offer their personal experiences with either of these phones, or suggest other phones? I am on a somewhat tight budget, after my bills, gas and insurance I only make about $50-70 extra per paycheck. On that note, does anyone have any coupons I might be able to use, or a place that has these on sale?
Also, these phones will need to be unlocked so I can use them on T-Mobile.

[Q] Looking for an unlocked Phone

Hi All,
I am planning to buy a smartphone in couple of weeks and requires your help in making the decision. Below are my requirements
1) Should be under 400$ (US dollars)
2) Screen size should be > 4 inches
3) Mobile OS should be Android or Mango (Windows phone). More inclined towards Android
4) Looking for dual core processor as Android runs best on Dual core in my opinion
5) Phone should be unlocked
I liked Galaxy nexus but do you guys think its really worth 440$ (including taxes and shipping)?

Ever considered unlocking a phone yourself? Not that hard to do. Guarantee may fly away though.

Thanks for your reply, I dont mind loosing warranty but i dont see much price difference between network unlocked phones and network locked phones. If you do , could you please post a link or guide me . Thanks
Please suggest
Unlocked Phone might seem expensive at the front but you are not tie to 2 yrs contract with network assuming that you are in USA. You can find alternative data and phone plan much cheaper. Good luck
BUMP ...Please help . I need to decide in couple of days.
HTC One S - should be able to get international version unlocked for around that price. 4'3 inch screen, good battery life, really thin phone and fast read a review on it. This phone is newer and built on better technology than nexus, it has sense UI if that's your style. I used it and it felt really nice to hold aluminum casing. built solid.
HTC one S is 100$ more than Nexus which is 500$ .I already stretched my budget from 250$ to 400$ .

Best Sim-Free phone for under £200

Hi guys,
Having a look through the likes of Tech Radar and Engadget, every so often you see good spec Android phones such as the Xiaomi Phone 2 or Pantech discover for around £200 (or $350).
Anyway EE have given me an amazing sim-only deal for £8.00 per month and for all my 2+ year old HTD Desire HD is still working, i imagine it won't be long before its needing replaced.
So, anyone recommend any good spec Android phones that will operate in the UK for around £200, similar specs to the new I've mentioned above..?
:good:
