Text messaging problem - Samsung Infuse 4G

Well, yesterday I played around with the working touchscreen jellybean we have here on our lovely infuse forums... Of course, nothing with cell works so I can't really use that. I restored back to my ICS rom and all was well until I woke up the next morning. I can receive texts, receive/send calls but I cannot send texts. All of them failed. I tried flashing new, wiping and flashing new, reflashing modem, flashing to stock... The works. None of this fixed it. I have no idea what the problem is but I know it's not something I can live with.

New issue with my current CM9 that's probably unrelated but...
Installed JB yesterday to take a look-see, restored from recovery, now cannot send SMS/MMS messages.
Reset and checked apns, all good there...
Phone works, data works, just no messaging.
Even restored to an earlier date than yesterday, still no messaging.
Checked SMS/MMS/IMS settings under "testing" mode, nothing wrong there.
Wiped dalvik/fix permissions, didn't help.
Checked everything I know how, only thing I didn't do was swap SIM cards with someone to be sure it's the phone's fault, but I'm pretty sure it is.
It's like it's blocked from going out... I can receive messages but I can't reply.
Clues? Hints? Erroneous finger gestures? Anything will help at this point.

On a side note, I got a PM from someone who had me look at the SMSC, which should have a long string of digits. Mine only says 0180, go figure.
I'll do a search on that and see what I get out of it.
Got it! The SMSC got fuggered somehow and had to be reentered, which was quickly supplied by the person on the other end of the PM. Messaging works, I'm just on the EDGE network... something else to figure out.

Taken from the jelly bean thread...not sure what the smsc is...but if you want more info I on how to fix it I suggest giving poxfreak a pm.
Also I would suggest using a frresh install instead of a backup...something tells that jellybean is partially broking the restore...

Without doing any kind of flashing or updating my texts partially stopped working. I was on uniporn ICS. I could send but couldn't receive. One possible fix I found in the past was to stop using the stock message app...I swItched to go SMS and things started working again. Not that I really cared for go SMS but it worked.

Check your message center number. Open messages where you can see all the threads and then hit menu>settings>message center. If it is blank you will need to find the number for your area. If it is not blank then IDK.

Go SMS no go.

I had the same problem a couple of days back. Get SMSC no from your service provider
For Nexus S this SMSC no.does not work directly. You have to convert it in some other form.....
I did following.....
1. Take out your sim card and insert it in a Non Smart phone
2. Go to message settings
3. Type in the SMSC no you got from your service provider
4. Change Send as TEXT if it is anything else.
5. Save. Remove the sim ans try in your phone
It will work.

I was looking all over for this, i had the same problem when i switched carriers. my wife's phone let me send txts and her sim card worked on my phone but when i used my new sim card with my infuse it just wouldn't work! i stumbled upon a fix on some random android forum and that fixed it, i'm going to have to bookmark that wiki post lol. thanks!

Same thing happened to me. After being on the phone with AT&T for 45 minutes we could not figure it out. THEN, I looked in messaging, opened up settings, saw there was no number in "message center".. Put in my # which is "+13123149810". Wha la... worked. I kicked myself because I should have looked for the simplest solution first.
Hope I helped

Where do you check MMS settings?
This sucks; you'd never know you were not receiving MMS until someone asks if you received it. Also, you'd never know until you try and send an MMS.
I can send MMS just fine running Cog 2.2. Haven't received one lately so I can't comment on that end. I'm also using Handcent so it could be something with the stock MMS.
Just set message center to +13123149810 its blank for some reason fixed it for me.

Mine was already set to that.
If I go into APN settings, the username and password are blank and you can't edit them...so my guess is that its something related to that.
When i try to send a MMS, I get "error in server response".

very weird... but now, all is fine.
went to check the APN settings under settings, network
then wen to check the message center settings
then, asked a friend to send me an mms, replied with an mms...
all seems to work now. weird.
Try sending the word "Test" to 151 & see if att replies. Thats what att told me to do then that worked mut other messages failed then they asked for my IME # then they told me to set message center to +13123149810 & turn the phone off & remove the battery for at least 30 secs. (I think they might have done something too) Then it just started working when I turned it back on. (I never mentioned 2.2 or gave them any indication that the phone wasn't stock)

The Message Center address is for SMS only and has no impact on MMS. It is only needed for outgoing (mobile originated) text messages.
I was able to get MMS working by creating a new APN using the following settings. After I set it up, I selected the new APN and rebooted.

Unable to send SMS/MMS to AT&T Phone

My girlfriend has a Samsung Captivate and she can send me SMS/MMS but I cannot send her.
I have called AT&T Tech Support and also T-Mobile Tech Support, nobody can give me solid answers or resolutions.
Our workaround is to use that TiKL Touch2Talk Application for messaging, but this is simply annoying!
Anyone? Ideas? Also, anyone wish to PM me a phone number if they use AT&T so I can test with your line?
Thanks a lot guys,
Michael
What phone are you using and through what carrier and also what firmware?
I am using the Samsung Galaxy S 4G with T-Mobile.
Stock firmware, haven't flashed anything. Its out of box.
Try going into Settings/Wireless and Network/Mobile Network Settings and then Access Point Names.
See if there's an APN showing T-MOBILE US then underneath epc.tmobile.com
If there's nothing then click the menu key on the bottom left and select New APN.
Either way make sure it matches these settings.

I'm referring to sending MMS messages. MMS has always been an issue even on the Vibrant. Oh BTW! removing the dashes is one of the quick fix that you can do to fix the MMS sending issue! if you use the search bar you will see what i'm talking about... soo search around this forum instead of asking and laughing at the someone who is trying to help with your situation. I suggest go find help somewhere else!
Not laughing at you, just laughing at how there isn't really any information about this...I have never had a problem like this before with any phone....

[How to] Bypass At&t's Throttling in 3 easy steps.

i figure i would make a post since so many people are asking for me for instructions on this.
1. Set up a proper APN
go into settings > wireless & networks > mobile network settings > access point names, and delete everything there and set up 1 apn with these attributes:
Name: ATT
APN: Phone
Proxy: <Not set>
Port: <Not set>
Username: <Not set>
Password: <Not set>
Server: <Not set>
MMSC: mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: <Not set>
APN type: default,mms,supl
APN protocol: IPv4
hit menu > save
setting the apn this way doesnt do much. it just ensures that you are NOT using att's proxy which will slow you down anyways. also never tether using a proxy, as att is allowed to snoop through your data and use it as a claim against you!
2. Disable GPRS/EDGE
something on the towerside makes your phone prefer sending data over the 2g edge network, which is how att throttles you. even if your notification bar says 3g/hspa/4g/hspa+ is available, you will be using edge to send your data. its easy enough to fix this though.
go into settings > wireless & networks > mobile networks > network preferences
it should be "GSM/WCDMA (preferred)" but change this to "WCDMA only"
please note: if you go into an area with 2g only, you will need to change your mobile network back to accepting GSM networks! since most of att's network is 2g, this might become necessary.
3. Make it stick with airplane mode!
go into settings > wireless & networks
check "Airplane mode" and then after being in airplane mode for 10-20 seconds, uncheck it.
be sure to run a speedtest before and after to make sure you are no longer being throttled!
these are the wordings for settings on cm7 which my phone is running. your phone may be slightly different. for example it my say "HSPA" instead of "WCDMA" but it should still hold true.
this is the exact same way tmobile throttles too, but they only start throttling when you hit 5gb down. att claims you will be throttled when you hit the "top 5% of your area" which is not a good policy because for me, that was 1.7gb. att also throttles all lines on an account. they are even throttling my little sister's iphone which used less than 100mb. very uncool att! i have yet to figure out a way around this on the iphone...

If you were getting 5 down, you weren't being throttled. If and when it happens, you'll know. You can read up on network selection as to why your speeds increased.

I'm going to flash a new ROM I'm currently on MIUI and see if that helps any but I doubt it considering I believe it's going through AT&T's Profile for your phone # "Registration" that they limit you that way... Not 100% sure but pretty sure. it says I have a 1 bar connection but I wasn't receiving any calls (i was testing out google voice from my gmail). I went to the settings and saw that it was trying to connect to the network.
anybody else have this issue or have a solution?

Call AT&T and have them re-"provision" the phone (IMEI)

I'm having the same issue, and I know my phone is provisioned correctly (i worked for att until a couple weeks ago). I don't know of a fix yet, but I've noticed it only seems to happen when I'm coming out of an extremely poor service area.

I posted similar issues in the king cobra thread.
I have massive signal data drops. Ive even had to delete my apns, reboot and manually add them to restore.
Its becoming a real pita. Never had the problem on stock. 1.73. Might roll back to test.

I was having the same issue.. until I did a factory data reset and installed the latest CleanROM Standard. Everything works well now with no data drops
I have the same issue. I've had 2 phones swapped out because of it but it's done it on every single one. If I'm inside my work where I have issues with getting a signal and then go outside the phone will show I have full signal in the status bar but I wont be able to make/receive phone calls or send/receive text messages. The only way to fix it is toggle airplane mode or reboot the phone. Drives me CRAZY!!!!

Will try this today and post back. I'm just happy I'm not the only member of the club.
If the issue is software related Im sure a fix will be along. If its hardware there will be a recall I hope. Rogers is notorious for refurbished replacements.
1.88 radio and kernel fixes this. I also returned a phone because of it. New one still did it untill I ran the 1.88 ruu and changed APN. You probably don't need to run ruu but you should install the 1.88 radio and kernel. This will fix the mobile data issues, dropped calls and not being able to call out with full bars. The APN for AT&T is on page 4 or 5 of the 1.88 thread. Ill locate it and post back.
Ok this is for ATT. I'm Sure Rogers is easy enough to find.
name: AT&T PTA
APN: pta

MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net

works a ok with any Asian Rom
I'm confused, why do you need to manually create another APN setting? Those you listed are the default on mine.

Just add in the different things under "APN Type" they make a difference.

If it is correct then you do not need to change. I'm not sure but they could be updated by your rom developer. When installing the 1.88 ruu only, the apn had to always be updated. If anyone is still having connection issues verify you are on 1.88 kernel and radio. Just because a custom rom says 1.88 base that normally doesn't include kernel and radio. Both ate available for flashing in dev section.

There is nothing different. That is exactly the same as what is already listed on my AT&T phone.
Edit: didn't see your post above. Maybe cleanrom automatically fixes it. Who knows.

Having the same issue.
I have to reboot my phone for it to work. On the stick 1.73 I never had this problem.

Not sure if it's a problem with the radio, but after installing 1.88 kernel, it definitely fixed a similar issue that I had, which was that LTE was not restoring after losing signal.

[APN][AT&T][MMS][HSPA+] Single APN for HSPA+ Speeds AND MMS - (Updated 1/1)

Hey everyone,
As many of you know, APN switching can be a sporadic mess in AOSP roms. We've either had to deal with it or have a single APN at standard HSPA speeds. The following is a SINGLE APN solution that has been working after hours of trial and error and testing. I can't guarantee it will work for everyone, but please use this as a reference for future builds. So far so good.
APN: phone
mmsc: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
mms proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80
MCC:310
MNC:410
APN type: default,supl,mms,hipri
After hours of testing on many ROM's, I feel like these are appropriate APN settings that everyone can use. I've gotten my best data speeds ever AND MMS to work without having to worry about APN switching. Thanks to all the testers! This has been officially moved to the development thread as a reference to AOSP and AT&T phone developers.
Disclaimer: May not work for everyone

Instructions for editing APN:
1. Menu
2. Settings
3. Wireless and Networks
4. Mobile Networks
5. Access Point Names
6. BACK UP EVERYTHING. Write it down, Screen capture, Do something! I am not responsible for you losing your settings.
7. Individually delete ALL APN's
8. Menu
9. New APN
10. Enter the above settings and make sure you hit menu>save when you're done!
11. Select your newly created APN
12. Reboot and enjoy!
Update 7-24: It has also come to my attention that port 8080 works. I am under the impression that it is higher security for sending MMS messages. Thanks!
Update 2 7-24: User xxxSuperserieSxxx has reported the following working from an AT&T Infuse to and from another AT&T phone. I need testers for this fix as well for MMS messages to users on OTHER carriers (T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, etc). Thanks guys.

I found out this one also working
APN: phone
mmsc: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net

MMS port: 8080
MCC:310
MNC:410
APN type: default,supl,mms,hipri

Update 8-13: For One X users only! Try changing "APN" to pta and add "fota" to APN type. Then make a second APN with the above settings. pta is for LTE, but you need a fallback when you aren't in an LTE covered area I believe. If I had an LTE phone i could test this, but sadly I don't yet.
Update 8-17: I'm now supporting ANY AT&T device on this thread. If I don't already have it listed, I will find a setting that works for you and test it with anyone who needs me to do so and asks nicely.
Update 8-21: For Inspire 4G owners only! You may want to include "fota" and "admin" in APN Type, separated by commas. For example, yours would read something like: APN type: default, supl, mms, hipri, admin, fota.
Update 9-15: For AT&T Samsung Galaxy S3 owners only! Use the following to achieve LTE speeds and mms functionality:
APN: pta
mmsc: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
mms proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80
MCC:310
MNC:410
APN type: default,supl,mms,hipri
Update 1-1: It seems a though AT&T is switching to a unified APN for all phones. This is the "phone" APN in the OP. This should be the default for all newer AT&T phones, whether they are LTE or not. This includes the Nexus 4 as well. Try it! Bottom line: Use the APN in the pictures above.
Report feedback to this thread. I will try my best to answer when possible
This is the old single APN HSPA method if the above settings are giving you difficulty. Data speeds are slower, but it seems to be old reliable.
APN: wap.cingular
mmsc: http://mmsc.cingular.com
mms proxy: 66.209.11.32
mms port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
APN type: default,supl,mms,hipri
Ok just tried it again with the change you suggested in your second post, and I can confirm it works, I was able to send a picture
I googled for an answer but gave up. So, if someone could tell me what h+ speeds are as opposed to 3g I would be thankful to them. I have a single apn that works well on my s2 but not sure if the speeds are right. My infuse is on cm 10 or I would test with that .

Really, jmoss? And phone is your only APN? Did you include a port as well? If this works, we've saved a lot of people a headache!

Well to put it simply, HSPA+ is a lot faster than regular HSPA. HSPA is what most people know as 3G. HSPA+ is what AT&T called "4G" before LTE. HSPA+ is capable of WAY faster speeds. For example, both the S2 and the Infuse are capable of 21Mbps HSPA+ with the exception of t-mobile which is capable of 42. Now in real life on HSPA is get around 3-4Mbps DL's. On HSPA+ I've seen anywhere from 7-11 at max. I hope this helps. This is actually a good read if you want more specific information on HSPA+ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolved_HSPA

I only have the one APN and it's the one you have in your first post, the only thing I changed was the alternate mmsc setting you had listed. Other than that everything else is unchanged.

No problem, glad I could contribute. I wish I could have more input when it comes to the data speeds but my connection here at work sucks.
thanks will test
as soon as i can get out of work today i'll work on testing this some. my mms had just started working in CM9 and then i moved to CM10 last night and have not been getting MMS. i hope your consolidation works. thanks.

Thank you! Please let us know the results.
I am getting from 2.5 to 5.7 Mbps and able to send and receive mms on my s2. My son is using infuse with cm10 . ( Finally quit bugging me to use my upgrade so he could get the s2)
Here is the single apn that works on s2 if anyone wants to try it.
Name ATT
APN wap.cingular
Username [email protected]
MMSC http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Port 80
MCC 310
MNC 410
APN Type default, supl,mms
APN protocol IPv4
Edit.. For testing purposes I made a contact named Me and put my own number in. If I send a picture to myself and receive it my mms is working.
Everything else reads not set.
Thank you , Stratatalk

Thanks for testing this...I feel like we have to be close. And yes, those are the HSPA APN's. We were trying to figure out a single HSPA+ APN so we didn't have to use two. I thought we had it there for a second...maybe we do, too soon to tell.

Can anyone try 172.26.39.1 for the mms proxy instead of proxy.mobile.att.net?
works for me!
I've been having some attachment issues since flashing CM9 a couple of weeks ago... as you said, sporadic. I was lucky enough to stumble upon your new thread while heading over to find some APN settings to try. Plugged in the ones you suggested, rebooted, and voila! Works like a charm so far. :good: I'll report back if I have any problems. Thanks!

Right. The following params...
APN: phone
mmsc: *can't post links yet*//mmsc.mobile.att.net
mms proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80
MCC:310
MNC:410
APN type: default,supl,mms,hipri
Unfortunately, I'm a "new user" (I hope) as opposed to "a noob") and I am not sure how to find out specific data speeds for you, though... sorry.

No problem that's exactly what I needed to know. I talked to the mods and this thread is now worthy of the development section as a reference. Thanks again to everyone involved in testing! If you'd like a shoutout in the OP just send me a PM and I'll add you.

Testing now...go to settings>wireless and networks>mobile networks. Did you accidentally hit the data toggle while you were in the APN settings? My data is working just fine upon reboot and everything. I am running CM10 though, but that shouldn't make a difference.
