Unable to send SMS/MMS to AT&T Phone - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

My girlfriend has a Samsung Captivate and she can send me SMS/MMS but I cannot send her.
I have called AT&T Tech Support and also T-Mobile Tech Support, nobody can give me solid answers or resolutions.
Our workaround is to use that TiKL Touch2Talk Application for messaging, but this is simply annoying!
Anyone? Ideas? Also, anyone wish to PM me a phone number if they use AT&T so I can test with your line?
Thanks a lot guys,
Michael

What phone are you using and through what carrier and also what firmware?

I am using the Samsung Galaxy S 4G with T-Mobile.
Stock firmware, haven't flashed anything. Its out of box.

Try going into Settings/Wireless and Network/Mobile Network Settings and then Access Point Names.
See if there's an APN showing T-MOBILE US then underneath epc.tmobile.com
If there's nothing then click the menu key on the bottom left and select New APN.
Either way make sure it matches these settings.
Name: T-Mobile US
APN: epc.tmobile.com
Proxy: Not set
Port: Not set
User name: Not set
Password: Not Set
Server: Not set
MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.tobile.com/mms/wapenc
MMS proxy: Not Set
MMS: port: Not Set
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
Authentication type: None
APN type: Internet + MMS
Hope this helps.

Yep, everything matches. =(

* UPDATE *
I sent an MMS just fine, but SMS is still not working!

here's a work around. remove the dashes from the contacts phone number when sending MMS.

I've had the same issue when my friend (on the iphone) and I try to send mms to each other.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA Premium App

First, removing the dashes definitely does not work, lol.
IPhone also, that sucks, Mann I don't know where to turn for this one...

I'm referring to sending MMS messages. MMS has always been an issue even on the Vibrant. Oh BTW! removing the dashes is one of the quick fix that you can do to fix the MMS sending issue! if you use the search bar you will see what i'm talking about... soo search around this forum instead of asking and laughing at the someone who is trying to help with your situation. I suggest go find help somewhere else!

Not laughing at you, just laughing at how there isn't really any information about this...I have never had a problem like this before with any phone....

Where do you check MMS settings?
This sucks; you'd never know you were not receiving MMS until someone asks if you received it. Also, you'd never know until you try and send an MMS.
I can send MMS just fine running Cog 2.2. Haven't received one lately so I can't comment on that end. I'm also using Handcent so it could be something with the stock MMS.
Just set message center to +13123149810 its blank for some reason fixed it for me.

Mine was already set to that.
If I go into APN settings, the username and password are blank and you can't edit them...so my guess is that its something related to that.
When i try to send a MMS, I get "error in server response".

very weird... but now, all is fine.
went to check the APN settings under settings, network
then wen to check the message center settings
then, asked a friend to send me an mms, replied with an mms...
all seems to work now. weird.
Try sending the word "Test" to 151 & see if att replies. Thats what att told me to do then that worked mut other messages failed then they asked for my IME # then they told me to set message center to +13123149810 & turn the phone off & remove the battery for at least 30 secs. (I think they might have done something too) Then it just started working when I turned it back on. (I never mentioned 2.2 or gave them any indication that the phone wasn't stock)
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
The Message Center address is for SMS only and has no impact on MMS. It is only needed for outgoing (mobile originated) text messages.
I was able to get MMS working by creating a new APN using the following settings. After I set it up, I selected the new APN and rebooted.

[Q] Nexus S MMS problem! Blurry MMS in UK

Hello!
I have seen the threads on blurry MMS messages in the US.....which has been more or less fixed.....anyone in the UK have any idea how we get this fixed over here?!
I have contacted O2 and they have said the phone is not officially supported by them and therefore they cannot assist (although I bought the phone on a 2 year contract with them!!!). They have advised I take the phone back to Carphone warehouse and get another model as they cannot give me a date when the Nexus S will be supported.
Anyone have a work around for this in the UK? Surely I'm not the only one in the UK with this issue?
Regards
G
UPDATE
~~~~~
Have just spoken with O2 technical data services and they have confirmed there is nothing at all they can do and the phone apparently should be used on the network and they have no plans in the near future to support the phone and they advised I get a refund.
If anyone in the UK has found a work around for this on one of the other networks please let me know as I love the phone agh!! Its available on all the UK networks from Carphone Warehouse/Bestbuy....need to know if they have a fix!
Just tried sending an MMS to myself (may not be a valid test ) and pic looks fine.
On O2 UK (Simplicity package) using Handcent SMS. Rooted running 2.3.1 at the moment.
I've played around with the "stock" APN's which may or may not be relevant - happy to post settings if needed.
Yeah if you could post setting so I can compare that would be great!
I have tried sending a pic from the camera to myself and thats blurry also! As well as ones other people have sent me.
Dont know if its the phone settings then or something in your rooted ROM may have rectified it? Hmm...
I'm not in the UK, but 2.3.1 corrected the blurry mms for me.
which network are you on?
i believe there is some switch that can be turn on/off on the network.
when i first switch from iphone to N1, i have similar problem.
sending a MMS to iphone is not a issue (other than needing to manually resize the picture), but upon receiving MMS, it comes in a very small picture.
at that time, i heard other users on other network does not have this issue.
if you have friends on other network, maybe you will want to borrow their sim to give it a try.
When you took these APN details and put them in...did you get a green circle by them? When I entered all the details in manually.....I havent got a green circle and after reboot the net/mms wouldnt work at all! Had to "restore default" to get them back (still blurry!! haha)
You get the green circle for the default APN (afaik this should be set to the 3G/Data APN you have setup)
I don't have a green circle (MMS APN set as default) next to the MMS APN either.
You should also ensure you have your 3G/data APN set as default (use the settings on that post if needed) and just delete the other APN's from the list.
Outgoing MMS is fine, resizes ok....and an be viewed on the other handsets with no issues.....its only incoming MMS that goes blurry beyond recognition
Firstly thanks to Highland3r this post with the MMS APN settings got sending and receiving working on my Nexus S! Secondly also being on O2 UK I concur the MMS messages all come through with low res small scaled pictures. I had the same issue on my previous HTC hero too.
Its definitely down to O2 not recognising the capabilities/supporting the phone type so it defults to the lowest res/size their MMS server supports.
OP you got a complete BS answer off O2 - They should simply add the nexus S into their list of supported phones and ensure their MMS server knows about them!
Sorry to bring up such an old thread but did anyone manage to solve the problem of the blurry mms's? I'm on giffgaff which uses the o2 network and have the same problem. Funnily enough it seemed fine when I first used it and friends pictures that they sent me were coming through at about 200k. I recently had to do a reinstall of the firmware and im having troubles now. I can send myself a picture via the stock app or gosms and can see it has resized it to 150k+ for outgoing but when I receive it back it has resized to anything below 20k making it un viewable.
I started using the Handcent SMS app, instead of the stock one, and it seemed to fix the problem for me
Any advise on this woould be thankful, texting issue?
Just switched over from the iPhone 3GS. I am not receiving all my text messages.
I am getting 90% of them but my wife and friends sent me several that I never received. Also I am unable to send pics through MMS. I can receive them put can not send them. I bought chompSMS (because I was so use to Bite on the iphone) and was wondering if this has been any problem with some you all. I tried the native message app and same thing. Also I did not change my plan, it was a upgrade. Unlimited data, text and phone services.
Also, I was familiar with changing the ROMS on blackberry's and I jailbreak several iphones but MANNN the language used for rooting droid phones have me clueless. Is there any step by step site that speaks in layman terms for a complete newbie to the droid OS. No clue to what some of these terms mean. As a beginner to the droid OS it is a little over whelming IMO.
task like Flashing, creating a goldcard, custom recovery etc... Every root step process I was able to find assumed you new what a lot of this stuff is. Is there such instructions out there.
Ok flame away, we all have our strong areas, and Droid is not one of mine just yet...
Well the tech had me re-set my phone and that didnt help. I removed chompSMS and then I was able to send MMS pictures. I loaded up handset and was also able to send MMS pics. So it looks like chomps was the issue. I just email their support for some advise. I bought a copy and I do prefer it over handse sms.
PS
I do have MMS under the ALN name, its just doesn't have the green circle check next to it like the media net does.
I want to thank you for your responses!
Unlimited APN
I hope this help throttled users. Since the wap.cingular APN bypass doesn't work anymore I use the visual voicemail APN to avoid being throttled. Create a new access point network and use acds.voicemail for APN, select internet+mms for APN type, and save. This gives me 2-3Mbps speed, good enough to stream radio and it doesn't trigger data counter.
Not sure why it's not working on others but it's working for me. You need to have visual voicemail activated with your LTE data plan. This apn is unlimited, meaning your data usage will always stay at 0. Data speed is between 2-3 Mbps. Btw if you're in an LTE area sometimes this apn won't work. Everytime I go to NYC or sometimes at Queens, my data is on/off with this apn, no big deal coz I just use the 'pta' APN.
I don't use visual voice mail, is it necessary that I do to make this work? If so, how does one "activate" it? Do I have to make a phone call to ATT or is it something I can do on my phone? Also, do you disable packet data before you switch the APN to the voicemail one and then reenable it? Of course all of this might not matter, I do live in San Francisco/LTE area...still willing to give it a shot though
Man they are gonna notice this thread and by tomorrow the apn will not work. Please remove this thread to avoid the few of us who have found that this works from getting disconnected just like the rest of the apn fixes.
Open AT&T visual voicemail app and let it setup your vvm. Once everything is done, create this apn and save. This apn only works if you're using the AT&T visual voicemail app. Like what other have said, this apn sometimes don't work if you're in an LTE area. My friend just bought a Galaxy Note and he's using this apn with no problem.
Is visual voicemail a feature that I need to add to my monthly plan? Free or $$$? I opened up the app and it says I need to dial voice mail to set it up, all I get when I go to voicemail is it prompts me for my password and then goes to the normal mailbox options
No, visual voicemail is free. It is included with your LTE data plan. When you open the app it will dial your voicemail and ask you for your password. Once you enter your password, either end call or press *. After that it will go back to the visual voicemail app again.
Yup it does say new message, I just never noticed it...
I am also having this issue. What's strange is that it cropped up after using MMS over Straight Talk in Hangouts for a few days without issue. I've tried deleting threads, deleting app data cache, etc. No matter what I've tried, keeps happening. I've also tried using different APN settings to see if that would fix the issue. I'm convinced that this is an issue on the Straight Talk side and not the Android/Hangouts side. I saw that someone spoke with tech support at ST about this a few days ago and a ticket was filed to look into this further. Hopefully the issue is discovered on their side and it resolves the issue for all of us.
I do know that Textra seems to block the subject line, so there's that if it helps, but for me personally, I'd like to continue to use Hangouts, but without, <Subject: New Message> showing up for all received messages. Too bad there isn't an option in Hangouts settings to ignore subject lines for SMS...
I also cannot get MMS to work with Straight Talk on my Nexus 5.
I've tried all the APN settings I could find. I also bought a new SIM card from the start, so that's not it.
Need help!
Nevermind, I got it working now.
Turns out it was just the app I was using. In Hangouts I can send/receive MMS just fine with Straight Talk's recommended APN settings.
Hi,
What did you do to fix it? I'm having similar problems.
Are you able to receive text attachments? Like pictures?
I used the below APN setting for my nexus 5 and can make calls, get LTE, send text and text attachments and even recieve texts. BUT I can't receive any pics thru text. I'm using Textra as my SMS app if that matters.
Can anyone please help me out?
Thanks!
I'm having similar problems as you. My APN settings are a bit different, but like you I can send/receive text messages, make/receive calls, connect to the LTE network, send MMS messages (successfully), I just cannot receive MMS messages. Every time I get a MMS message (in Hangouts BTW) I get a text saying "Touch to download MMS message. Size: xxKB. Expires: dd/mm, hh:mm pm". When I touch it it just "spins its wheels" and eventually says retrying below the message.
My APN Settings
Name: Straight Talk (can be whatever you want)
APN: tfdata
Port: 80
MMSC: http: //mms-tf.net (no space after http:, had to add one because I can't post links)
MMS Proxy: mms3.tracfone.com
MMS Port: 80
Hey guys, I've been having considerable trouble getting mms to work but got some APN settings from Straight Talk tech support that seem to be working. They are identical to the ones brooks posted, except that there was no value for the "port" field. Hangouts would still not receive MMS but I could send them. After installing textra and setting it as the default for sms, everything now seems to be working fine.
This fixed it for me
