Hi,
I'm a newbie here... to both Android and the XDA Forums. I'm looking to purchase a tablet for no more than $400 USD.
I like the pros of the Nexus 7.... being that its quad core and its $200.
Still... the lack of expandable memory and DLNA is a sore point for me.
For a while I was settled on the GTab 2 7.0 (I have a GT-I9100 so Samsung Bias is expected). I didn't see the need spending an extra $100+ for an extra 3.1" on the screen size to get the 10.1 version.
This was my choice until some bastard (lol) mentioned the TF300T and now I'm back where I was before....
Now every review I've read... so far... owners mention having the dock. That's an extra $130 and pushes the cost up to $500. Now.... I may get the dock... if I WANT TO... if I indeed go with getting the TF300T but I want it to be a choice and not something I HAVE to get.
So my question is, sans the docking station, just HOW good is the TF300T compared to say... well... a GTab 2 10.1"? What are the caveats?
Appreciate any assistance forthcoming. Thank you for your time.
i don't use my dock at all. in my opinion the dock is only usefull if you plan on writing a novel or essays.

So it IS a functional tablet as far when compared to the GTab2 10.1? No drawbacks?
I don't have the dock, and I don't see myself buying it in the future. I wanted the TF300T for mobility, and it's pretty good .
If the need arises for a physical keyboard, I'll just take my laptop with me. The only thing I regret from the dock is the USB port - I can't buy the adapter in my country.

Yes....and is more powerful than the GTab 2 which is a dual-core machine (vs quad core in the Transformer).
On the flip side - the GTab has built-in 3G support. The TF300T is wi-fi only.
The TF300TG has wi-fi/3G...but it's not available in all territories.
The keyboard dock is obviously useful for productivity apps....but it's also handy for old DOS games, hacking etc.
It also has the SD card....and extends the battery life by 5 - 6 hours.
IMO, it's a more flexible device with the option of the keyboard. I use it as a tablet probably 70% of the time.

This tablet absolutely Trashes GTab2, better performance, better screen, the ability to get the dock if you want to. The one drawback I find is that there are more accessories for the GTab 2 (like the smartcover) but I think that gets fixed in time. Also Asus is famous for bringing fast updates and there is already CM10 (Android 4.1.1) rom out for the TF300. I would really get this tablet over the gtab2, don't really see any reason to get it, it's pretty crappy in the end, so laggy.
For me, the dock is just like an extra acessory to my tablet. I rarely use it. The tablet is perfect even without it. Of course, the USB thing is really useful
I agree. I don't have or need the dock. The TF300T is great and ASUS support is fantastic.

I would get the ASUS...even with its little quirks.
My ONLY complaint about this tablet is the lag in the browser...some experience it,some dont. it is annoying but not terrible.
and i have a feeling Jelly Bean will fix it.
the main advantages of the ASUS over the galaxy tab is the update time. ASUS has always been on of the first to deliver the latest version of android to thier devices.....Samsung on the other hand....not so much. i believe they JUST (as in the last month) updated to original tab 10.1 to ICS...asus updated their original tf101 like 4 months ago.
also the quad core is pretty nice for graphically intense games (dead trigger looks fantastic) in every day use though, you probably wont notice much of a difference.
not to mention the dock. i dont have one, and i dont think i really need one...however i would take one in a heart beat if i got a good deal on it. just adds so much functionality.
I hardly use the dock. Slightly annoying since it costs so much.

I dont have the dock , i dont see the need for it , has much of the use I do with the TF300 is gaming and to watch some anime. But is nice to know if ever want to do more then just gaming I can buy the dock and make it a netbook.
With the lack of a USB, How do you browse, add and remove media from the device using a PC? (When you don't have the dock).
Suppose, heaven forbid, I'm in a place where there is no Wifi, how would I transfer media?
If I can successfully navigate this with one caveat with ease, then we have a winner

You can still use the cable, or use a micro SD to transfer data to your tablet. Easy enough.
Only had mine for a week, but it works great with or without the dock.
Some things are easier with it, but still easily manageable without it really

I don't have the dock and I liked having that as an option if I decided to get it in the future. I love my tablet as is and I usually get SAMSUNG products. Asus is quick about upgrades unlike SAMSUNG. The dev support is picking up, and the device is at an excellent price point for the specs that it comes with.

It has the tegra 3 which is much faster than the omap 4430. It also doesn't have touchwiz and is pretty much aosp with a few minor mods. The tegra 3 also gives you access to much more of the system ram. Close to the full gig. I've noticed on my galaxy nexus that only about 700 is available so it must share it with the GPU. That extra 250 or so makes a difference during multitasking.

Dude I was in the exact situation as you. Also have the SGS2 and was considering tablets like you. The Stab 10.1 was my 1st choice ofc until I realized for way less I could get way more.
I got the TF300T without the 3G because I par it to my SGS2 without any problems and both of them have BT 3.0 so its practically as fast as your internet connection can go on 3G.
Other than that I dont have the dock as I wanted a Tablet not a Netbook and because its paired with my phone to share the internet connection I have absolutely no issues with any type of connectivity. Other than that Your SGS2 SD card firs in the tablet so you could just copy stuff on there and plug it into your tab and copy it off putting it back in your phone if you want OR you could just install Dropbox to transfer files with like I do
With the tablet you get 8 gig's of Asus web storage and there is a app for it you can install on your home PC and on your phone if you want to do it that way too.
There is literally multiple ways to get stuff shared in between them.

I'm looking to get an android tablet and I've narrowed it down to 3. Asus transformer, Acer iconia a500 or Motorola xoom I've chose these 3 as they are fairly cheap and look set to get much cheaper as new tablets come out. The only problem I have is all reviews I read are heavily biased towards an ipad2. I would like some honest opinions from people who have actually used the devices, rooted them installed custom roms and also what apps are like running as I've read apps don't all work at full screen on 10" screens.

The Asus Transformer Prime has the best stats, but I think you're referring to the eeePad Transformer in your list (which IMHO looks like crap from the reviews I've read).
From the 3 you listed, I'd go with the Xoom. But seriously, why not just save for a couple more months and get the Asus Transformer Prime. You'll thank yourself later!
Did look at them and they look nice but its not a matter of saving I just don't want to spend that much on what is really just a toy for me (can't see it replacing my PC). What I'm more concerned with is the report I read that a lot of apps don't scale up to the big screen. Is this true or was it just another apple fanboy slagging of anything non apple.

The whole belief that honeycomb is unfriendly to apps total BS. I have had a Transformer since April and have rooted it and am running Revolver rom and even before i rooted it it was extremely slick. The home screen isn't very good but install ADW EX and you get the best homescreen experience ever. I have over 100 apps on mine and they all work great and look beautiful. You will, of coarse, find some that aren't that great but that happens everywhere.
Now as a transformer owner i can honestly recommend any android tablet to someone ( Who actually knows abut android) and you will enjoy it. I would suggest you get the Prime though because it's much better and you get more for your money. Asus is really great with updates so you shouldn't have to root it for a while
Also also on it being a toy, it can totally replace you destop, you can get the keyboard dock when you want and make it a full on ultrabook
The transformer is my favourite so far in my opinion it looks nice. I love android so its nice to know it runs nice. Thanks for letting me know about the apps it was my main concern. Now which one to chose? Hmmm.....

If you are going for first generation tablets the transformer is the way to go but with CES this week you should wait to see what comes out of there
One thing I forgot to ask if I replace my PC can I still perform adb functions for my phone or do I still need windows.

I also have a OG Transformer, and I like it a lot. It's fast, good looking and the dock is very cool. If you can find it for 300 bucks just buy it.

I have a galaxy tab 10.1 and I really like it. My wife has an ipad2 and here is my take on these things. The galaxy tab is every bit as good as the ipad in many areas. internet browsing, email, etc. Where it falls behind the ipad is the apps.
My wife has Hbogo on her's, but I cant get it on mine. My wife has directv app which can watch some live tv, my same directv app doesn't have this feature. There are some great apps for the android tablets, but not nearly as many as the ipad2. The android apps don't seem to get all the attention as the ipad's.
I still like my tab a lot and I am hoping the apps will catch up.
I've owned a Xoom, Galaxy Tab 10.1, and the original Transformer.
If I had to choose between those three I think I would pick the original Transformer by Asus. Best experience I had out of the box.
Galaxy tab 10.1 was a very close second.
Now it is all about the Transformer Prime for me though. All I have to do is find one for sale.

kidding....but honestly if you can find one for ~$100 it can be quite possibly the best tablet available. Android is quite stable, even though currently its running gingerbread.
But I would wait, like someone said above CES is right around the corner, and who knows, ASUS could be like Sony and drop the price on the prime by $100. But if you are really set on a tablet now, do you really want something that is over a year old.
I would also consider that you take a look at the Tablet S with their recent price drop.

Seriously, take a look at the forum for them, CM7 is coming along, CM9/ICS is progressing, and webOS is solid. At least consider it. 1.2GHz dual core, 1GB RAM, 10" screen, wireless charging dock available. The TouchPad had sold more units than any android tablet. The iPad is the only tablet that sold more units period. The cheaper than dirt price helped, but all those units out there mean there is a large userbase, and plenty of support.

Hi all
Just after a few opinions on which tablet to buy.
I am looking at the TF300T, TF201 and the Acer A510. Anyone got any opinions on which one is best value for money?
I was drawn to the prime originally but the GPS and wifi issues put me off. I then got drawn to the cheaper transformer pad but have been reading that the Acer A510 is a better performer and has better battery life (for the tablet to tablet comparison anyway).
Can't make my mind up!
I am also wandering if its worth waiting a couple of weeks to see what is announced at Google I/O, nexus tablet maybe?
I would definitely wait and see what the Nexus Tab's specs and price are, but even if they are nice they won't compare to either of the tablets you're considering. Also IMO the TF300 is better in almost every way once you add the dock, most likely the battery comparisons you've heard have been just the TF300 v.s the Acer A510 but that doesn't factor in the TF300's keyboard dock battery. With the battery it slaughters the A510, and you wont find a productivity option this good anywhere else. Also having the dock add not only a battery and physical keyboard but it adds a full-size SD card slot and a full-size USB 2.0. I may be a bit biased but as long as you are planning on buying the keyboard dock with the TF300 its a no-brainer.
I would recommend the TF300 if you need a tablet soon. If not and you can afford it you might want to wait for the TF700. At one point I considered the Acer A510 also until I heard about the heat issues. I currently have 2 TF300's, one perfect 32gb, and a 16gb currently at Asus being repaired. And for my smaller tablet I have a Galaxy Tab 7.7. As far as 10" tablets currently available the TF300 is the way to go IMO.

In the UK you cant get the TF300 without the dock, at least not from a shop anyway!! You can import one or use a shady online e-tailer.
My problem is that I am getting fed-up of waiting. I have been lusting over an android tablet for months.
I think I may well have to wait and see what the nexus tablet is. i'm probably not interested if it is only a 7" version. Really want a 10" tablet myself.
I have a nexus S for my phone and definitely prefer the stock android experience and the very active development scene that goes with the Nexus line of devices.
May still end up giving in and buying a TF300 though!

believe me, the TF300's Stock OS is as close to stock android as I've seen on a tablet for awhile, and if you're worried about it becoming outdated, this thing has top of the line specs and will last you for a good long while.
problem for you and me is there is always a better tablet coming in six months.. I bought the TF300 and like it so far. I love having the dock because I use pocket cloud remote desktop alot.
Unfortunalty I know I want a windows tablet when they become available and will prolly buy one too.. If you can wait then prolly when the one comes out you want now there will be a release for a new one and you will tell yourself, should I wait for THAT one?
Get the TF300 its nice.. If i wasnt using a dock though i would do the ipad. I like the screen format better for tablet use..
Just got home from work to find a check from the tax man for £430 so guess I'm gonna spend it on the TF300T then! Thanks everyone for your opinions.

You can't go wrong with the tf300, I just got mine last week and I love it. My brother has the tf101 and the 300 blows it out of the water. My wife has the 7in galaxy tab 2 and it is a great tablet,some of the best speakers of any tablet I've seen, but I like the larger screen. Before I made the plunge to a larger tablet, I had a nook tablet that I heavily modified and put ics on it, a great affordable beginners device.
The 300 is such an awesome device, my only complaint is that I didn't get one sooner.

Okay guys, I need some advice here. I am going to be forced to buy a tablet for work. I am the salesman of the month and what they do is give $500 or an IPad if you don't have a tablet. This will be used primarily for work with office software, emails, remote desktop, etc.
I am not sure that I want the IPad. I am thinking Android but not very familiar with the tablets. My brother had a Xoom and I am not crazy about it. I was wanting to decide on something so I might be able to get it in the Market Place here on XDA. I also think I want to be able to buy accessories like a dock,etc.to use with it.
Let me know what you guys think.....

Just FYI, the $500 limit is probably unrealistic. Especially with a dock, etc..
I do love my Samsung Galaxy 10.1" 32GB, but they can't sell them now or something because of a law suit with Apple'
I also have an ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity TF700T Tablet 64GB and it is quick! But a TF300T would probably serve you real well!
Just make sure not to go below 32GB. You won't be happy if you do!
The ASUS has a really nice dock, if you're going to do a lot of typing. As for remote, TeamViewer puts the PC's desktop on your tablet.

I'd second a recommendation for the Asus TF300 or TF700 series. If you opt for a $700, you can buy a TF201 Prime dock that will work with the new Infinity tablet. I mention this as it will be cheaper than the official TF700 keyboard dock ($30 - 40).
My brother has the original galaxy tab that I could probably pick if for $100 but it has a very small screen and not much storage. It does have an SD card slot though.
Do any of you think the IPad is better than an Android tablet for office stuff? I will not be gaming on it, never really liked it or don't have the time.

I can't really give a non-biased answer on that. I know people that have iPads and have integrated them with their day-to-day work, but more often than not I see them playing games or checking email and not really do anything that's specific to the platform.
I know I personally would opt for the Android tablet route, but for e-mail, remote desktop, etc I think the apps are good on both sides of the fence and you'll be happy either way you go

What would be a good price on the original 7" tablet that he has? It is Verizon 3g leather case and dock. He has it on a data plan now but I think I will use WiFi only. Oh it also has the SD card slot and is 8/10.

I have a tf300 with a dock and love it. I got mine for 530 with dock i know you can get it cheaper online as i got mine from best buy.

You guys are slacking. Nexus 7 16GB and pocket $250 for accessories...beer money...hookers and blow.
7"-8" is where it's at for portability. Who wants to lug around a freaking iPad all day.
If you absolutely need storage then OTG cable or wi-drive such as AirStash or Kingston Wi-Drive...
I don't know how anyone can be on XDA and still stomach it to wake up in the morning owning an Apple product. Wasn't so bad previously, but this latest round of lawsuits has gotten out of hand and I choose to practice what I preach.
Google nexus 7 if you are covered by wifi , if not go for the new Sammy 10.1 note that's going to sell in 2 weeks.

Well, I'd say Xoom 2. It's beautiful and has a great built quality (and it's also water resistant).
I'd go for the ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity TF700T.
The display and processor are simply hard to beat!
Asus Transformer is hands down the best.
Usability, the Samsung is the clear winner. The ASUS has no Task Manager (likke in Win). It has no screen captue icon in the Task/Status Bar. The ASUS powers up just from plugging it in to charge and there's no way to see how much charge it has, without starting it up.
These things do make a big difference and they are annoying weaknesses of the ASUS TF700T! In fact, I'm debating returning the ASUS and keeping my slower Samsung because of these things only. But I do like how fast and smooth the ASUS is and how good its screen looks.
However, without ebing able to root this ASUS, I can't do a lot of what I need to do and the DebugFS rooting method acts like it worked, but it doesn't and I can't post to that thread yet, because you have to jump thru hoops here first. So far its been a few days and I'll have a few more to go before I can post there, if I still even can. No offense to the admins, but it really pisses me off! I came here for one reason and one reason only and that was to address the developer about why it's not working for me and that will take a week! I will probably have returned the ASUS by then and say screw it. I wouldn't care if I could find another way to root it, but Google gives me no love there.
I know that last part seems off-topic, but it's not, considering how many people will need to be able to root and that being part of a recommendation and fols having problems with what seems to be the only rooting method available and no way to ask for help here, if they just got the device, find out the developer posts here and have to wait days just to ask a lousy question.
So as weird as it sounds, the ASUS has a mark against it due to XDA-Forums. If the util doesn't work, that is. Again, no offense. That's just the way it is.
Moral of the story? If you need to root, you can try the ASUS if you want. But if the util doesn't work right away and you don't have the privileges here, then just return it and get the Samsung, if you can't wait. Otherwise, just get the Samsung. It will root easy enough. If the situation weren't what it is with access to the developer, then no big deal.

Nexus 7 by a country mile. I own both, the TF101 is horrendously laggy and is probably not receiving Jelly Bean. You can still connect a bluetooth/usb keyboard to the Nexus if you need to, along with any other accessories. The main plus side of the TF101 is the extended battery life, but it wasn't that much of a big deal for me.
Have the TF101 and played with the Nexus , Nexus 7 is smooth and fast but that 7inch screen is just to small for a tablet.
i'm trying to get rid of my TF101 for the Nexus 7.
like others are saying, it's laggy (on stock). although i rooted the TF101 to put JellyBean on it, and it's pretty good so far.
don't forget you get micro sd expansion on top of the 16gb/32gb on the tf101 + additional sd card slot, 2 usb port and battery on the dock. i guess it on depends what you need, the nexus will give you continuous OS updates before other tablets and it is more portable and newer.

You can still connect a bluetooth/usb keyboard to the Nexus if you need to, along with any other accessories. The main plus side of the TF101 is the extended battery life, but it wasn't that much of a big deal for me.

I'm pretty sure JB is being officially ported to the TF101.
Personally I say go with the TF101 just because it comes with a keyboard and some sort of pouch or case. The Nexus 7 is small for a tablet, but is faster. You can root the TF101 and install a JB ROM like CM10 or RaymanFX's AOSP or TeamEOS (correct me if I'm wrong).

i am running RaymanFX's AOSP JellyBean on my TF101 and yes, it runs much better than stock. carrying around the TF101+dock is like carrying around a netbook. as soon as i find a buyer, i'm' getting myself the N7.

Yeah you're right it is like a Netbook but you are sacrificing screen size for performance. In my opinion, screen will always take precedence, but to each their own. I am also debating a N7 so if you get one could you tell me how it is? It might be one of those devices which I can make an exception to my opinion.
I just went through this exact same debate. I wanted something to take on the road with me when I travel. I wanted access to word, excel, and powerpoint too. I debated and debated. The Nexus 7 kept tugging, but a few factors sold me on the TF101.
Pro-Transformer:
Expandable memory - I dropped a 32gb card in right away. I also have the card reader on the dock for emergencies.
Keyboard - bluetooth keyboards are all well and good, but they don't come with several extra hours of battery life.
HDMI out - I can run this into a monitor/HDTV and make presentations with it. Very convenient.
Pro-Nexus:
Processor - Tegra3 vs Tegra2. That's all I'll say.
Portability - 7" is very convenient for traveling.
Software - you know the updates are coming.
Overall, the Nexus pro's couldn't sway me. It all comes down to what your personal needs are. Get your legal pad, make your list, and be happy with your decision.

Go for the TF101. It is older, but better. I might say N7 if it had an external MicroSD slot.

First if all thank you all for your replies.
I have dicided to go for the tf. Just played with the 7 inch tablet from samsung and I got to say..... It's small. I have htc one x so if I buy the nexus ill add only 2 inch to my display if u know what I mean. On the other hand tf have some great thinks that comes in the package. I get the keyboard the sdcards and the extra inch comparing with my phone. And since everybody is saying that jb on tf is very fast I solve the speed difference. The only thing left is the 1080 movies that the tf is not able to.play from my understanding. Is this true?

I can't try any tablets out, cause they din't release in India still now,nexus 7 might come out next month,,,but might be overpriced here :/
Actually i'm asking my uncle whose in USA to get this for me, and only Asus tablets have international warranty
If nexus 7 comes out with 32 gigs ill get that then.
The newest tablets I can compare for you is this and the GNote 10.1
GNote 10.1 runs faster and the s-pen is great
TF700 is a bit laggier but amazing res and yes, a lot of apps aren't that great for 1080p

Lets ignore the higher than average build quality issues, since you can just pick a place that will let you return many times until you get one without visual hardware flaws. (make sure you do that.. pick a place with a good return policy)
I am seriously disappointed in this tablet. (it's my second one) It's really slow and really choppy. I would NOT spend my own money on this device. But that's your decision to make. I shouldn't have to unlock and void my warranty to make my tablet work at an "almost" acceptable level. Running Cleanrom 1.0 makes the tablet way better, but still nowhere near the level an expensive device should be at. I'll try Cleanrom 2.1 tonight.
When I say really slow and choppy, this isn't even with games or items that really tax the resources. This is while using things like Pulse reader.. or pretty much anything that has to scroll or requires multiple touch actions in a row. like open email, scroll to bottom to check something, and press delete all in pretty quick succession. You have to pretty much pause between each screen touch so the tablet can keep up or you get "Application Not Responding". This is likely related to the poor I/O. (my 2 year old phone, and 2 year old ACER dont have this issue)
I helped out a previous employer and was given this tablet as a gift.. I keep it because depending on how you look at it, it wasn't really my hard earned cash that paid for it. I'm sure there are many people out there who love their tablet... But compared to my much older and much lower spec Acer A500 this thing sucks. If you dont NEED the keyboard.. try the Acer A700 instead.
The screen on the TF700 is very nice (the serious light bleed is only really noticeable at start-up). I have had no issues with blurriness or general ugliness. Obviously with the high resolution things must scale and any applications built with low quality graphics will be fuzzy when scaled. This is not an issue with the tablet, but rather with the App developer. Any high res screen will have the same issues until all app devs convert to higher quality graphics.
After dealing with my friends terrible TF201 (prime) and now this TF700 (2 of them).. Which proves ASUS is either not capable of fixing the performance issues, or simply doesn't care. Either way it will take a lot for me to throw any cash toward ASUS in the future.

Honestly, i don't know why so many people say bad things about this tablet. No device is perfect, they all have their flaws... you just have to choose which ones are most important to you. Since I've gotten this tablet I've experienced nothing but good things... apps and games are fine and will only get better. Speed is fine with the browser2ram apk installed... and the look and feel of this thing is just amazing. Don't let all the negative comments here mislead you. I was worried when I bought this tablet then came here to read only negative things, but after taking the leap of faith I have no regrets.

Acer and 2-3 more compaines are coming out with 1080p tabs + htc butterfly which is a 1080p phablet.
So, i assume all these "might" lead to a quality full HD app's?
And does the nexus 7 support OTG

I think it's a good investment. I love the **** out of my Inifnity. Yes, there are some QC issues like light bleed (very little in my case) and screen adhesive issues (again, very little for me) but I still think the price is justified. This is why stores have return policies.The best thing a consumer can do in this case, is to give the company as much feedback as possible. The majority of consumers don't realize how much influence they really have. Even the iPad has issues like these. Granted, Apple customer support is probably a lot more responsive. I still think people should not go into the tablet market, being so young as it is, and expect perfection.

I wouldn't recommend this tablet. I have had it since it launched and I waited too long to return it.I waited for JB to be released on it. It ran ok with ICS but now that it has JB its pretty sluggish and choppy compared to other tablets in the Transformer line that run JB(which was a huge letdown considering the hardware in this thing). And as of now, there nothing optimized for its 1080p screen. This tablet is just a little too far ahead of its time. If i could make any recommendation, I would say wait until the Nexus 10 is released.
Yea nexus 10 will be too late(and probably when it comes out i wont be able to get it, cause next year my uncle might not come down to india).. now i'm looking into nexus 7,ipad mini and ipad 3 :/

That would be the A700...take it from me a former owner.

From what I read OTG may not be fully supported (read only)
