Returning? :/

Maybe thinking of returning my infinity. So far I see no difference between this and my android phone. I only bought it a week ago. Would best buy return in even if its unlocked and rooted?

I'd say its pretty unethical to return an unlocked device unless its defective, as they'd just put it back on the shelf and whoever buys it next would be conned out of their warranty. Its why many of us wait for our return period to expire before doing such things.
For that reason, the unlock might give you trouble if the staff there goes out of their way to look for it. In this case, your success would be completely dependent on luck.
Root itself shouldnt pose an issue as it can easily be undone.

I used to work there, best buy wouldn't even know that it is rooted/unlocked. They will most likely send it back to the manufacturer anyways. Very rarely is it open boxed

They would know if its unlocked since it will indicate it on initial boot on the top right or left from what I've read here.

Yep, it says something like"This device is unlocked" in the upper lefthand corner.

I think the indication was that they literally don't even turn it on. They take what you give them and mail it back to Asus without looking at it.

From my experience returning tablets/electronics from BB, they check to make sure it works. With tablets they almost always attempt to turn the device on to see if it works regardless the reason for the return. Its pretty much the first thing they do after taking it out of its box. When I swapped out my Infinity, they turned mine on to check. They were going to do a factory reset but I had already done it prior. So in the end they will more then likely notice that it is unlocked. I hope they don't resell your unlocked tablet. I wouldn't want to get one already without warranty.

yes, will turn it on. but just don't turn it off and they won't see the unlocked message. put to sleep instead.

Bestbuy won't know what the unlocked message means anyway and also wouldn't know it's not there on a retail TF.
FWIW, I returned a TF300 and TF700 to Bestbuy and both were unlocked. No issues with the return at all. They didn't even ask if anything was wrong with them.

Best buy will let you return it, but like others said unless it's defective they may well resell. However if it's defective i would have no qualms returning it.

Asus has improved the quality of TF700?

I know that many people are happy with the TF700 tablet. But I can not ignore that there is a certain percentage of people who received defective tablets.
I want to know if Asus, with the number of returns that will surely have received, taking a responsible attitude, reacted quickly and made changes to the tablet. My question specifically is:
Can anyone confirm if the most recently produced TF700 Asus come with fewer problems than the initials?

Personally, I don't think that enough time has passed for Asus to make any sort of manufacturing changes in order to fix any of the physical defects that some are seeing... I'm sure it takes time to change the manufacturing process and go through existing stock, etc - the device has only been out for what 75 days or so? I highly doubt that the physical design has changed at all yet (if they ever change it at all)...

I was unaware that the Prime's problems were addressed. I went through several of them through the RMA process and even have seen purchases much later on and the same problems were still present. If you got lucky and happen to get a "good" one then you were very lucky. People still with Prime's, is Asus physically making changes to the tablet?

I really feel bad for ppl who got stuck with prime. Asus promised us the world with that piece of sh*t, and gave us a turd.

I can confirm that. It would be anecdotal nonsense but if it helps ya sleep at night...

Only good part about the prime was exchanging it for my infinity. Honestly if it was manufactured correctly and the bt/wifi issue didn't exist it would have been a terrific tab. Asus is quick w updates, generally uses good hardware, and the Tegra3 is fast and really good on power IMHO. My infinity is as good on power on "balanced", (performance drains quick), as my Prime was.

I just returned a TF Infinity earlier this week that I bought last month. The tablet had horrible screen lift everywhere except for the corners. Even with the world focusing their sights on Asus and the Nexus 7 Asus still hasn't been able to fix the screen lift issues so I can't imagine the Infinity having it's issues fixed first.

Yeah Asus addressed the Primes issues.....by releasing the Infinity and discontinuing the Prime. Prime owners still had the last laugh though by being able to return for a full refund.

To unlock or not to...!

Hi, I'm on the verge of unlocking, but I don't know what benefits would I get. I'm rooted already and I was thinking of just waiting for jb. So what should I do fellas?

I'm waiting for JB. I typically do the custom ROM thing with my Android devices but on the TF, I don't like the fact that unlocking voids the warranty. Given ASUS recent history with Android tablets and the weak development scene, it strikes me as not worth the risk at this time. Root is sufficient for me right now.
I will probably unlock it next year after the warranty is up.

unlock when you have a need or desire, ie reason, to. Basically, have a reason to flash to something. Otherwise, root will be sufficient.
That's basically me right now.

The couple things I have done in the past with root.
1. Browser2Ram
Improves browser performance. This is as simple as installing the browser2ram.apk and reboot, then simply give superuser access. I use boat browser and to be honest, not sure if I gain much performance on it, but feels a bit faster.

2. Build.prop editing
I have done this in the past with my old two units. I felt things got a bit faster. Though uncertain if related, but after the build.prop editing I had couple episodes of random reboot, which I had never experienced. So my current unit, I have not changed build.prop and have not had any random reboot.

3. Volume

Further, using Titanium backup you can create and restore backups of all your apps and system data. Moving apps to be system apps so they work better. Ie maybe it was a bug but if you use the beautiful widgets weather (asus weather is waayy to big) and click one click clean it wont open on next click. pushing to system fixed it.
If you like gaming check out gameCIH the app. (Look for it in the browser, I don't wanna link and get in some sorta trouble) This app once you know how to use it allows you to cheat on games lol. Some games when they update are designed to trick the app so if you backup with Titanium use cheats then back up again go into the market and select update it usually pulls over. ie Heroes Call money for example

thanks guys for all the info. i did do the browser to ram but i didnt really notice a difference on boat, but my chrome started to fc on me. The build prop its hard to do at the moment since i dont have much time on my hands, ill be glad if someone can post a tweak build prop that i can just download.

Why root? First Titanium Backup. Two, BusyBox.
These things or using ADB or Android's SKU, you can remove bloatware or other ware you don't want. Currently, i would suggest just freezing them unless you know how to pull or add with ADB incase you need to factor reset because it may case problem if you do a factory reset.
After that, it's more what you're into. I like Sixaxis Controller. It's a really good app to let you use a PS3 controller with some games. Great with emulators. It also lets you map out touch controls. On a side note, Wiimote works well too, but it's uses a Wiimote and doesn't requite root, but not touch control mapping for games not programmed for a controller.
If you like to get apps not available in the US such as BBC iPlayer or NFL Game Pass, MarketEnabler. You can also use to this to get apps that are specific to carriers
RootKeeper is another good one. This will let you play Google Play movies since they don't, usually, play on rooted devices.
Screencast is an excellent screen capture and screen recorder.
Rooting itself unlocks a lot. Just depends on how you like play. Unlocking, that's for the bootloader and recovery, which would be specific for nandroid backups and flashing. Thus, were talking custom firmware, kernals and some custom scripts (these is usually where unlocking features that are build in, but not turned on for some reason). As of yet, the TF700T is very limited in these things.

Unlock... THEN ask what it's good for... THAT's the noob way!
Dude, you are doing it bass akwards. You rooted, and now are looking to see what you can do, then you want to unlock, "just because" I had the Prime for 7 months before I unlocked it and only did it then because I was backed into a corner, with Asus refusing to provide fixes anyone (we went 3 months with no updates, and then they pushed out the worst update of any they had ever provided.) THAT was when I unlocked, and 3 weeks later I regretted it. there was only a couple of ROMS (the ONLY reason to unlock if for a custom rom install) and they were all, just okay, nothing spectacular. Biggest mistake I made on the Prime. Granted there are ALREADY more roms out for Infinity, but the grass AIN'T always greener. I suggest you read THE ENTIRE THREAD for EVERY custom ROM for this device (or at least the ones you think sound worthwhile) THEN, after seeing all the BS those folks are going through (or all the joy they are having... there are ALWAYS pluses and minuses) you can decide to unlock or not. remember YOU CAN unroot. Unlocking is a one way street, and if you go into a bad neighborhood, here is no return trip.
Why people are always in a rush to root and unlock, without even knowing why they are doing these things is always a mystery to me. You are exactly the type of user that ends up crying in these forums how you briked your device. SLOW THE HELL DOWN. There is no magic bullet to make your tablet perfect. Time, and reason and logic and LEARNING are what will make you tablet perfect.
EDIT... Oh yeah, do you realize that if you unlock you won't BE GETTING JELLY BEAN? No from Asus, and not OTA. You will have to wait for a developer to pull it and make it flash-able for your unlocked tablet. Unlocked means no OTA updates again. EVER. Not that the developers aren't awesome, they are, but you will have burned your Asus bridge once and for all. Still "on the verge" of unlocking? Listen, I am sorry to be harsh, but the way you want to unlock is just wrong on so manly levels, if I saved you from yourself, you may be glad later. Don't forget, sine you are rooted, if you want to KEEP root, get Voodoo OTA Root Keeper (on Play Store) - and you have to run it BEFORE applying an OTA - not after if you want to keep root through an OTA update.

I'm sorry, but I tend to disagree with the above poster in most respects. The difference between stock ICS on the TF700 and Zeus 4.0 ROM on the TF700 is reason enough to unlock your device. Regarding voiding the Asus warranty - so what - from what I've read about their warranty service, it's almost useless anyway! My recommendation to anyone who unlocks their device is to get a SqureTrade warranty instead of dealing with Asus' piss-poor warranty service. This way you are covered with warranty and get the advantages of being unlocked. For the $80 (with coupon) for a 2 year standard + accidental damage warranty, you simply can't go wrong - it gives you complete peace of mind.
That being said, I do agree that you need to be careful and make sure you understand what you are doing before you unlock. But, it's not hard or complicated to unlock or flash custom ROMs - just read up and ask questions first if you are not sure of something and you'll be fine.
Regarding not getting Jelly Bean via OTA - it's not a big deal at all - there will be flashable JB-based ROMs within a day or two of JB being released (if not sooner).

Just keep in mind that you can only get the SquareTrade warranty for up to 90 days after purchasing the tablet (30 days if purchased on Ebay).

With Best Buy (or any retail store) you have 90 days from the date of purchase - so you have *approximately* until October 21st....

I prefer to only root usually if I.can but Zeus is exponentially better than even a system-tuner-tweaked stock. I got constant crashes on stock and I/o problems were rampant. Voided my warranty but I can just flip it on eBay or send it in anyways if push comes to shove.

Keyboard issues

Hello,
I've had my tf700 for a couple of weeks now. Things started off pretty well with it, but now it's starting to give lots of keyboard problems.
Sometimes it goes nuts typing a string of letters like a key is held down, sometimes the last key i pressed, sometimes random.
Sometimes on wakeup, the keyboard won't work, but the trackpad does.
Sometimes nothing works, but the notification area shows docked.
Sometimes when these issues are happening, i can't open the notification menu. Touching it does nothing.
Sometimes a cold boot fixes the problem, not always.
Any ideas? Is it commonly this flakey? One of these issues has been happening at least daily for about a week. It's stock, no root, all updates. It came from Best Buy, so I can return within 30 days. Should I return it for a replacement? Different model?

Did you do the cold boot with the dock attached?
If that does not sort if out, I would return it. Maybe you have better luck with the next one...

I have done cold boot with and without the dock attached, doesn't seem to make a difference. I discovered tonight that when the notification thing is not working, it will start working when the tab recieves a msg or something. This also started the keyboard working tonight after multiple cold boots did nothing.

That's an issue that came with Jelly Bean. There's a lot of threads on it.
The other issues I haven't heard of yet. The Best Buy part isn't a shock, 90% of the faulty TF700's mentioned on this board came from Best Buy.....

No that I care about BestBuy one way or the other, but don't you think the reason may be that a lot of tablets were bought at Best Buy period? Faulty or not? They are one of the few brick and mortar places left if you don't want to buy online.
I have a hard time imagining that Asus produces sub-standard tablets especially for Best Buy. And I think BB would scream bloody murder if their return rates were considerably higher than "normal" for any particular product.

Fact remains that not a single EU user has complained about the issues BB buyers do. Assume from that what you will, but in Europe they do sell them in stores, and in some countries well before the US sell date. So no, it's not the tablet itself.
I suspect BB got a lousy batch, and BB just assumes it's the product's default state. People keep getting they product swapped for another from the same batch which is not going to do any good.

[Q] [Solved] SquareTrade 2-Year Tablet Accident Protection Plan

Is the SquareTrade plan void if I unlock the tablet, I am wanting to unlock and install a rom but at the same time don't want to be without a warranty.

As nobody with such plan responded...
Your best move would be to look for terms of your plan and search for something like user interfering/changing softwere, or more specificaly, unlocking bootloader/device.
I had two warranty plans, one from asus, the other one was a bonus from the shop I bought my tf700. Both are void due to unlocking... Check your plan terms and make your decision

I have a similar protection plan that I bought with the tablet from Best Buy and I know that I am covered. This is the only reason I decided to go forward with unlocking bootloader, rooting, and flashing a new ROM. I am glad I did and often question how I tolerated this thing before, but if did not have that coverage then I would not have made the switch. Like the previous response said, it would prob be best to search through the terms of your contract to see exactly what you are covered for.

As long as you get the accidental coverage, you're all set.

Thanks for all your replys. I got mad enough at the stock os that i unlocked and flashed a new rom anyway. I am glad i did now running clean rom and more then hppy with it i plan on buy the new warranty as it looks like it will still cover me.

The only way that asus knows the dev is unlocked is the fact that the tablet says "this device is unlocked" in the top left corner when you first boot it up. They could dig a little deeper and of course find out if that was not there but this makes it simple for them. Best buy however, does not care about that crap. I have already taken mine in and got a brand new replacement and they did not bother to worry about the dev being unlocked for a split second. The guy even told me when I bought it, I was covered for any reason and I was sitting there talking to him about rooting and what not. Best buy prob has a deal with asus for being a dealer/distributer of their product that says asus cant bother to "honor" warranties or whatever, or best buy will turn around and sell it as a refurb. Either way, your covered and this is the only reason I feel so comfortable with having my dev unlocked, rooted, and booted with some CROMi because it is a completely diff device with it.

This is completely false - Asus knows if you are unlocked without even touching your device. In order to unlock, you device MUST contact Asus and they record your serial number.
For what its worth, SquareTrade is MUCH less expensive as well (although you do have to mail it to them unlike Best Buy)...

well thank you very much i was debating on unlocking mine because i bought the warranty, but now that i know best buy doesnt care, im gonna unlock it, thank you

One thing to check for is if they cover damage. My SIII has full damage protection, and I had rooted it, but since it got totally hosed, they couldn't turn it on to check if it had been rooted or not. If your tablet's plan has the same thing, and it stops working, just drop it from the second story before you send it in.

Exactly - that's why the "accidental coverage" is so important - it literally covers ANY problem. Think about it - if you brick a device while flashing firmware, that damage was accidental, right (surely, you didn't MEAN to brick your device!)?
