[Q] AT&T Inspire 4G on Straight Talk Wifi Tether issue. - HTC Inspire 4G

Ok. So i have been searching around a bit and can not find another person (or thread at least) about this issue. I have a Inspire 4G from AT&T on straight talk's network. I am attempting to Wi-Fi tether after rooting (AAHK), however i always get the message from the phone stating that i need to dial *611 and talk to AT&T. Tried talking to them, but didn't get anywhere fast seeing as i have no account, nor account history with them. I have also attempted to use "Wi-Fi tether for root users" from the Play store, but it does not assign IP addresses to any device i connect to the network. The icon for that particular app stays yellow, but on the other phones that i have tested it on the icon turns green and everything works fine. But to be honest i would rather use the option in the settings menu if possible. Any thoughts anyone? Please dont hold the fact that im a noob against me, i got my training wheels in dev on PSP's and DS's, just starting to delve into the Android Dev world.

Never had a problem with it after I flashed to a sense free from like asopx works great actually and for Facebook and general surfing its surprisingly fast

Ok considering your situation you should root it. The process is very simple. It's a one click root.

Here's a video to help: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...m6DWCA&usg=AFQjCNEDETg2nq8rDBQWfKvlh9APF40fiw
It will root, unlock, install clockwork mod recovery, and superuser.
After that flash a rom. I will say I use the Rom called "Android Revolution HD 6.3.1" and can hotspot when ever I want, even without the AT&T account.
Video for that is here: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...4dTCCA&usg=AFQjCNE6rGAT6Z8pN9omO8UshYbzAup5cQ
As always I take no responsibility if you brick your device, or if you damage your device in anyway. Hope I helped.

I am on st talk, and i have used wifi tether without any issues on ICS ROMs. Check your APN settings to make sure they are still valid. If not, try factory reset, and start over.

http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
Try that link. You can try the beta or experimental ones if you like, but I had problems getting them to work. The version 2_0_7 works fine for me. If you aren't running a different rom and are just running the rooted version of the stock phone, the app that is already on the phone doesn't allow you to tether. It still forces you to go through AT&T. If you get away from the stock rooted rom, most of them have the ability to wifi tether built in. Or, you can download that program from the link above. It worked for me
Edit: Someone had a problem getting that link to work. Go to Google and search for android-wifi-tether, it should be the first like that comes up.
Go to the downloads tab at top of the page.

Go Custom
Tethering and hotspotting have not worked for me on ST without flashing a custom rom. All of the stock roms have blocked it as you have described. Don't have to be sense free though, just custom.

market place app not working

I just recently rooted my phone today and i havent put any mods on my phone yet. I have the EVO by the way, but now when i tried to install some apps to my phone its almost like the download never starts. Just see the wiggly lines can apps only be downloaded to an unrooted phone?
You can definitely download apps on a stock rooted phone, I did & I'm sure everyone else has too. Apparently there are issues with the market on the Evo sometimes not working after rooting, but I don't know why. I've seen multiple posts over in the Evo q&a forums. Go check them out or do a search, I'm sure this issue has been fixed here on XDA.
You could try flashing a custom Rom. After I first rooted my phone I was afraid to, but now I don't think I'll ever go back to stock. My phone runs so much better now.
If you have any questions or are wondering what to do now that you've rooted, feel free to send me a pm & I'll help you out

My 3G randomly dies and I can only use 1x. I know the fix, but what ROM supports it?

Had my TB for about a month now, everything was great till my 3G decided it didn't want to work. It just died completely out of nowhere. So after googling,I found if I dial ##778#, I can reset my modem and my 3G will come back.
The first time it died I was on Das BAMF 3.0 RC. Dialing ##778# did not work. I just got a FC. So I said screw it and unrooted my phone and flashed the stock froyo ROM back. Used that for a few days and my 3G died again, so I tried ##778# and it worked, I got my 3G back. I figured it was a random bug, so I put a different ROM on - samething happened: no 3G, ##778# doesn't work. Since it died again, and I didn't have access to the menu to reset it, I had to unroot my phone again. So then I rerooted but kept the stock froyo rom on just in case (since I knew I could reset the 3G here). Everything is good so far...
Only problem is, I don't really wanna use the stock rom. Every rom I've tried doesn't seem to have ##778# working... do you all know anyway to access that menu other than dialing? Or a different way to access it on other ROMs? Thanks!
tldr: What ROMs allow me to dial ##778# to fix my phone loosing 3G randomly? Everyone I've tried I get FCs

The fact that you saw that is great, so that's one ROM I can try now woohoo! Thanks!

no free wifi tether on gingerbread :(

so i did the ota update to gingerbread and now my barnacle wifi tether doesnt work. when i try to run the app it shows an error saying the DCHP port is already in use and in the notification tray the little white tethering icon pops up. so it seems to me that the phone tries to launch the built-in tethering app that you have to pay verizon for. i tried using app quarantine but that doesnt even recognize the app/setting so idk how to turn it off.
if i switch to a custom rom would that eliminate that stock app and the issue?
So - you had Barnacle working on your D2G?? My computer would connect, but would not 'see' any internet connection. Also barnacle would not list any clients when my computer was connected. When I went to uninstall, I noticed that the app was for EVO... I never tried/knew the app existed before the OTA update to GB. I have also noticed that half the reviews say 'does not work on D2G' so I'm wondering what the difference is between this phone and every other Android phone on earth and if anyone is working on a fix??
yea i had used it for quite some time, with ipods and computers. it was a life saver on road trips. i dont remember when i downloaded it but i never noticed anyone saying it didnt work or that it was just for the evo. and i got mine straight from the market too.
but yea this ota update screwed it up with the built-in app/settings. i dont know any way to fix it so i posted this in hopes that someone can program a workaround or something. im also gonna check out other roms. the pros of gb outweigh this problem so i dont wanna switch back to froyo
ok so i tried the Venus rom and that didnt work either. it has the same stupid vzw tether app that gets in the way. to me it looks like any GB based rom is outta the question, unless they found a way to remove that app. im back on the stock froyo (had some stupid issues with SBF that wasted a lot of time) i guess ill live with bad battery life and wait to update to GB when this gets fixed
There is no “stupid Verizon app” anywhere. There's the baseband (radio firmware) which does that.
i just call it that cuz its frustrating. and are you saying there is no way to get rid of this or work around it??
There were threads on how to alter baseband settings to make tethering work; I can't really find one right now, but I'm sure I saw them either in this forum section, or in droidforums' D2G section.
So it's a radio firmware that tells the app to take control? hmm. I'll look around for something as well for the D2G. I'll post any results. But yes as for now i downgraded to 2.2 again. need my tethering. #against the system.

I sure hope you don't decide to root. My wife was dead set against me rooting her phone, but she ran into a problem that was best fixed with root privileges, so she gave in. She is glad she did. Downgrading and rooting that phone is a beast for someone new to it.

The gingerbread update is what made me fall in love with my phone all over again. That being said...my one and only gripe....and the reason I rooted:
I couldn't send mms without having a data connection enabled. Couldn't receive either. Before the update, I could see there would be a momentary connection to data but only for the quick downloading of the image in the text message, even though my mobile network was off. After the update, it didn't function this way, forcing me to have to hawk my data connection/syncing when not on wi-fi...which was a hassle.
That and the whole CIQ business. Made my stomach hurt.
Sparky....are you saying that you can do mms now without data enabled?
If so, tell me more!

On my stock mt4g (froyo), the Mrs. and I could send mms/sms without having to enable data. At first I thought the sms was going over wifi, after disabling WiFi and trying several different combinations, I noticed that my little H icon pops up only when I send or receive multimedia messages. No H icon for plain text.
Fast forward to the gb update. After updating, the only way I could send mms is while data is enabled. I tried editing the carrier network settings to match my wife's but to no avail. It's clear that the update did something to remove this temporary data connection for mms.
Fast forward to last week when I rooted and switched to cm 7.1. I still couldn't send mms without data enabled. Made me think I would have to make accommodations and live with it.
Then I flashed the virtuousAffinity Rom and Hello!!! Mms with data and WiFi disabled. Again, I'm certain its using data connection for mms, tmo doesn't count it towards usage so its fine. My only sadness now is that affinity is on hold while the team reorganized, but the Rom is gorgeous.
I just started flashing so I'm hoping if affinity falls through, I can find another Rom that let's me do the same.

Mobile Data “Disconnected"

I recently flashed a ROM I wasn't a huge fan of, and therefore restored back to stock Sense 6 using a Nandroid Backup I created shortly before. The problem is that now my data is excruciatingly slow (in places where before I had great 4G service), and occasionally I get no data at all (even though my status bar lists me as on 4G). When I go into my device's data settings, it lists that data is on, but disconnected (something I have not seen before). At first I thought perhaps it might have to do with my WiFi being on on, but I can reciprocate the above issues with it off, so I am a bit perplexed. Could this have something to do with my kernel, or is it something else entirely? Has anyone had this issue before/found a fix for it?
EDIT: I would have posted this in the original ROM's thread, but since I am not entirely sure what is to blame for all of this, I thought it best to ask in the Q&A's forum.

As I understand, you have the Google edition. I had the same problem. It is an easy fix:
1 go to phone app and dial *#*#4636#*#*
2 click on phone information
3 under preferred network type select LTE/GSM/CDMA auto
4 wait for signal bars to show up and you're done.
Hope it helped.

Lol that was quick. Data problems are back... It seems that after extended periods of time, my mobile data status will switch to “Disconnected" and it takes either a reset of my APN's or toggling the network mode (Global to LTE, and vice versa) for it to reconnect.
I am thinking it might have something to do with the “Sleep Mode" option in Power settings, I will report back after some testing.

Actually I did, and nothing changed (around 10 minutes after I activated it, the same thing happened). Anyyyyyyyyyways I had a nice little chat with a HTC Support Representative, and she actually brought up a good point: my data issues were most likely stemming from an installed app. To verify, I ended up running my phone in Safeboot mode (it disables all 3rd party apps) all day and sure enough, I had no issues with my WiFi to Mobile Data hand off. I began brainstorming which apps could possibly affect something such as my data connection, and really only one came to mind... GravityBox. At about 6 PM today I disabled it, and so far have not had any issues. I plan on keeping it disabled for another full day just to verify, but if all runs smoothly, I will permanently delete it (I was really only using it for volume button media control anyways).

Hey Sevenix! I actually posted this in another forum but it seems things have slowed there over the past few days. I just wanted to put it here because my problem sounds somewhat similar to yours (though I'm not getting ANY data), and I just wanted to know if you had figured it out. I would have no idea what app it would be on my phone, being even more of a beginner than you said you were.

Hi all,
Incredibly new to this, but I've followed many a video/guide all day to convert my m8 from verizon to t-mobile. Despite the fact that most stuff is working, here's the mystery. I have no data (H+, LTE, anything), despite "mobile data" being on. Quick summary of what I did:
T-mobile sim card in-->downloaded weaksauce and SuperSu, confirmed rooting with root checker and boot menu---->Got s-off using adb bundle and firewater (mac)------>changed super cid to "11111111" via tutorial----->Unlocked, S-off, and Cid to all 1's confirmed via bootloader---------->downloaded flashify and booted TWRP via recovery image------>installed android revolution HD 5.0 and followed it up with the extra kernel you guys posted (wifi did not work before that kernel added, as expected).
Details now:
--wifi works
--Only seeing bars on top menu for call/text reception, no indication of internet/data connectivity.
--Phone seems to think that "mobile data" is turned off, despite it being clicked on (i.e. Chrome says "Offline--turn on data or wifi", Green news scroll HTC sense thing (drawing a blank here, sorry) seems to think it's off, too)
--Receiving calls and texts ok, despite being close to fringe of network (In Erie, PA), but I drove to the center of downtown too just to make sure it wasn't that. Calls clear, messages go through quick when in good area.
--Under settings, Mobile data clicked "on" but underneath Mobile data it just says "disconnected". Tried on/off, reboots, airplane mode on/off.
--Reinstalled the kernel a few times using a few different frequencies, no difference.
---Under Settings---->About-->Network---->Mobile Network type switches appropriately between Edge and LTE despite where I am in town, but still no actual data being....transmitted?.....to phone (i.e. can't work internet, check email, etc). "Service state" is "in service". "Operator--T-mobile"
EDIT:-----When I try to open SuperSu now, it tells me "There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem! If you just upgrade to android 4.3 you need to manually re-root, consult the relevant forums for your device!" I figure this is probably a key details, but being such a beginner I'm having trouble translating this. Does it just want me to delete weaksauce and SuperSu and reinstall them again?
I'm new to this, so I'm probably just missing something here, but it seems a bit strange considering how to the T I followed most of the tutorials out there. Anyone have any idea/suggestions?
Thanks!

I don't know if I will be of much help, as I have never flashed my phone to another network provider.
Anywaaaays, I assume that the Verizon M8 supports all T-Mobile frequencies? Was your phone able to connect to and transmit data prior to all your flashing? Have you tried flashing any other ROMs besides Android Revolution HD 5.0 on T-Mobile's network? From your provided information, this might just be issues with that particular ROM; I would suggest you try ViperOne, perhaps ACR, or any other compatible close-to-stock ROM. I cannot recommend anything more then this, as what you are trying to do is beyond my knowledge of this phone.
My data issues were likely related to a combination of an Xposed module not meshing well with my Sense ROM, and a faulty SIM card; your's seem to be much deeper. I suggest you get in contact with whatever member was responsible for discovering how to make your Verizon M8 compatible with T-Mobile, and continue troubleshooting with them.

Ahhhh, good thought. I'll try out a different ROM later today. I already posted that summary on the thread of the OP of the tutorial, so hopefully he'll get back to me.
Thanks for the help!
